- In this video I compare and contrast the 2021 Trek Marlin 7 with the 2021 Specialized Rockhopper Comp and the 2021 Giant Talon 1. These are all entry level mountain bikes from 3 large bicycle brands, so I go over what makes them similar and different from one another, to hopefully help you figure out which bike or brand is the best for you!

Update to video:
1) The prices of all Specialized Rockhopper models have increased by $50 USD, so the Rockhopper Comp is now the same price as the Marlin 7, at $850.
2) The prices of all Trek Marlin bikes have increased to $530 (Marlin 4), $600 (Marlin 5), $700 (Marlin 6), and $900 (Marlin 7).
3) At 4:55 I accidentally typed “Marlin 6” instead of “Marlin 7”
Giant Talon is the one that is available here in the Philippines. I'm contemplating on acquiring one. If bought, I intend to replace fork with a Manitou Machete (100 mm travel), and an oval chain ring.
I WANT ROCKHOPER ELITE COMPARISON
I got a Marlin 7 in June of 2020 to supplement my enduro bike. I have put about 600 trail miles on it and I must say I absolutely love it. It is well built and genuinely an all around great bike. It pedals easy and can really take a beating.

Love the videos you make I really enjoy them. I own a Marlin 7 in my opinion it's the best bike for the out the 3 but that's my opinion. Keep making the videos.

having owned both Talon 2 and Marlin 6, tires do make a huge differences on how it's used. Marlin is more hard surface friendly with thinner and mild thread tires. it's noticeably faster but I found Talon to be more dirt/muddy friendly. I now own Talon and I do prefer the Talon setup for what I use the MTB for which is more loose ground/path with various obstacles.
The Trek Marlin 7's paint job is so clean too

I got the Kona Mahuna 2021. Same price as Marlin 7. The Mahuna got 1x11s, rims and tires tubeless compatible. And also rockshox judy airfork

I believe currently the biggest reason to make a decision is the availability for now. Looks Talon 1 is a great choice, but the nearest dealer carrying it is over 500 miles away (I'm in NY). Have a Trek store very close to me. Maybe will pick a Marlin 7. Ps: 2022 Marlin 7 is $950.

Does the talon 1 have tubeless ready wheels? I know he mentioned they arent tubeless ready tires, but if the talon 2 had a tubeless ready wheel I am curious if the talon 1 does.

Talon 1, at least in Germany, also uses the SXC air fork and comes as 2x11 (Deore front and back).
Edit. At least it's branded Deore. It's slightly different than Deore on my Nukeproof Scout. Looks the same but there are slight differences, eg some thread sizes - Shimano brake bleed kit cup doesn't thread in properly. It's loose. Shimano has different types of Deore? Anyway, brakes seem to work ok.
2×11? We get the 1×10 Deore.

@Talalipop, may I know the maximum tire width I can use for Marlin 7. You are right, 2.2 is kinda skinny. Is 2.35 enough? thanks for the compparison.
I am not 100% sure as I have not tried fitting a much larger tire, but I know for certain that you can fit 2.3 inch wide tires in the front and rear with plenty of space. I'd say 2.4 inches front and rear would work fine too, but anything more may start to make the gap between the tire and the frame smaller and could prevent proper mud clearance and things like that.

I'm leaning towards the 2021 Giant talon 1. I think the components are a bit better. Plus I think you can swap the tires out for a 2.50 size.
Did you swap out the original tires for 2.50 width tires?
Well, my Rockhopper haves a NX sram transmission 10 speed and Sram SX conecting rods...and goes amazing

If I am on a entry level hard tail and am looking at upgrading to a trek full suspension. What do you recommend is best for the price. Can you compare the top fuel 7 SX and Trek Fuel EX 5 Deore. I don’t see why they are 600$ difference. If I see it right, The Ex 5 has lots more travel and better tires yet is less. Could you help me out

Just ordered marlin 7 in uk 2022 model apparently for £700 funny it's the same colour as the rock hopper, miami green.... I actually bought it for delveroo round town, I had a boardman mx comp it broke, I borrowed my friends marlin 5 noticed very little difference, plus I've a sore back with potholes and speed bumps thought 29er would be easier on my back.
P.s On Giant's website as of 3-9-21 it lists the rockshox only in the xs mode..

Giant have just put their prices up. Giant Talon 1 is now £729 in the uk. I bought one two weeks ago for £650.
I just paid $1000 for mine here in Florida.

I've been to 3 bike shops here in my city! Windsor Canada! I'm looking to buy an Extra large because I am 6 ft 3 " tall! They all tell me that an XL is hard to come by because they are not as popular as SM, MEd or LRG bikes! Frustrated! I go Mountain biking every day! I am riding now a 19" framed Specialized Rockhopper 2001 with 26" wheels! Until I find an XL!
Trek marlin 7 is the best of them and the best value for money from marlin series by far

The Marlin 7 is now $50 more than the Talon 1 in the US and the Talon still has the air fork advantage IMO. Tires look like they have changed to Kenda Booster on the Talon.... Upgrade or downgrade?
Looking at the rock hopper elite, would be nice if you could do a video on it.

The Talon 1 has an SXC 32 suspension fork!
It can have multiple forks depending on retail store, up to 3 here in mexico, 2 different(100mm/80mm) SXC or the rock shox

they all come with QR, check canyon stoic 2 almost same price its comes with thru axle but m not sure about their shipping and taxes

It went together easily in less than an hour. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.
Yes all of these brands sell at local bike shops and are not direct to consumer, meaning you will not be allowed to assemble it yourself. If you check out online usually you would have to select a bike shop to pick it up at, and that bike shop would have it assembled and ready to go for you
