This fantastic comparison of features and components is just what I needed to find a replacement for my rusty ol' banger. Long story short: Hello Marlin 6, time to come home.
This will be my first hybrid/mountain bike. I haven't ridden in years and coming off a road bike this will be a huge change for me. I want to stay off the streets and stick to trails, some paved, some gravel, some dirt to ride with friends. I looked at the Dual Sport and the Marlin. I have test ridden both (only very limited) and have decided to go with the Marlin 7. I liked the Marlin 5 but was intrigued with the crank on the 7. (I really like simple). My only reservation are the tires on the Marlin. That's a lot of tire for me and I asked about switching out to a less aggressive tire like on the Duel Sport. What would you suggest? Or, should I just suck it up and chalk it up to getting a better workout? btw - I'm a 77, 5'1" female. If I kill myself, the bike will be a nice item in my will. :-) Thanks in advance for your advice. PS. Love your analysis of the Marlin line.

I have the marlin 6 2020 miami green xs, and I’ve had it for a long time and I love it. Bought some upgrades today for it. I actually got it for a deal, only £300!
Well framed videos. Good explanations. I pre-ordered the Marlin 6 2022 due to availability before this video came out and nice seeing a breakdown between this one and the rest of the lineup. Shame about the fork not being the XCM, but still good to see it has some great components there. Can't wait to get it in October
Just picked up a marlin 8 today. Absolutely love it. I think I rode 12 miles today mostly on pavement. most fun I've had in a long time. cant wait to ride again this weekend.
@@Bigtime1998 Yes. I am absolutely in love with mine. I too mainly ride on pavement. Spending over 1k on a bike is not a decision I normally make. But its darn worth it!
@@bombswabs3041 Big thanks. My only worry is the low number of gears vs a bike like the Marlin 5 which has 18 gears. Any issue with the single front sprocket and only 12 gears?
@@Bigtime1998 cant really say that I do. My last bike was a hybrid 21 speed. That said when trying to get going very fast especially down hill I maxed out the gears feeling that a few more would be great for going even faster. But its not at all a deal breaker as when I reach this point , Im already going damn fast pushing my legs to the limit. I wonder if it can be upgraded to cassettes to allow for even more gears?
Thank you for a great comparison! I have Marlin 7. It is not a bad bike, but I think that bike at this price point should have better frame. The frame should be with axles and a conical steering cup. And the welds must be processed. For the Marlin 4-5, this is excusable, but 6-8 must be devoid of these shortcomings in order to be competitive in 2023.
Hi Talalipop, Happy and Healthy New Year to you and your family! Thanks a lot for the comparison which was very helpful for me to decide which Marlin to buy! WELL DONE!!
My 2022 Marlin 5 came with the brand "Radius" for the brakes instead of Trekfro. It definitely feels a lot more flimsy and I have to pull on it more to get the bike to stop. We called Trek support and they said they have changed it temporarily because of the supply chain issues but it is really infuriating that they substituted the brakes for an inferior product that doesn't even have a website online. Do you have experience with Trek substituting components? And is there any way to get them to exchange the brakes for the original? I'm contemplating if I should return the bike and wait for one to appear in a few months with the correct components as they are currently sold out in my area.
for everyone’s information… I managed to pick up a 2022 Trek Marlin 7 here in Ontario (Canada) and it came with MAXXIS IKON tires on KOVEE TLR rims :D. I’m somewhat surprised that they went with the Alpha Silver Frame … my old 2013 Trek Wahoo has the Alpha Gold. Not a big deal but interesting …
Awesome video and you're an awesome youtuber. Forgive me if you mentioned this and I missed it, but the Marlin 8 only comes in XL, not XXL, for us tall guys!!
GREAT video.. Please do a review on the 2022 Roscoe Lineup, especially since they now have a Roscoe 9 and it appears the frames are different. THANKS! 🇺🇸
Best summary/comparison anyone could ask for, well done! I picked up an M8 a few weeks ago and am still trying to get used to the SRAM shifter, but I love the bike. Do you think the derailleur is the weakest link?
Was waiting on the 8 but a Specialized Rockhopper Elite popped up and I jumped on it. Other than the top tube being more rounded, a 1x10 vs 1x11, a wider rear tire on the RH, and the color, I don’t see much difference. My 2 older sons have 2021 Marlin 6s and I’m getting a 2022 5 for my youngest soon.
Hey I go to that trek store all the time in downtown Sac, autograph my bike bro? lol, your videos got me into mountain biking and helped me choose what bike I wanted, appreciate all your videos bro
I got my trek 5 in grey half a year ago. It is really nice but shifting in the rear can sometimes be slow from gear 3-4 and 5 the front makes a lot of noise and is a bit quicker but i rareley use the 1st front gear

You continue to amaze me. After your trek ds 2022 video, I started looking at the marlin bikes. seems much better value bikes which can do commute and trail easily. The 5 seems best value especially if more polyvalent use than the 6 trail orientated. Pls correct me if wrong. Thank you again for the amazing job you doing. You literally made Trek my only option simply because I know what I am getting EXACTLY. Priceless 👍👍🙏🏻🙏🏻
Hi great video I’ve just subscribed. Is there any chance you could do a video on the procaliber range or even a review? There’s not much out there on this model so any info would be appreciated.
Love your videos! New subscriber. This video helped me decide on a marlin 5, thank you! But LBS all out of stock, and they had some insane requirements on non refundable deposit I couldn't accept. I ordered a Polygon MTB instead. I'd love to see you do a video like this, comparing the polygon models, even though I've already ordered. They appear to be the most readily available bikes right now, and I read that they are the behind the scenes developer for other brands people love and trust already
I'm really confused in buying in between 4 & 5. my ride style would be mostly on road and less on casual trails/ beaches. im considering 2022 marlin 4 because it has 3 gears in the front which may prove for better speeds on roads but marlin 5 is offering lock suspension and hydraulic brakes and as you said better all rounder. the region which im in right now experiences alot of rain and snow too which one you think would be good
I’ve been looking at getting one of the Marlins for my commute to work, but my commute will have a mixture of terrain to deal with from gravel with serious downhill gradients, country meadows, some urban roads and then following a canal dirt path. Then on my days off work, potentially start going mountain biking on the nearby trails. The website I’m looking at has the Marlin 7 for £659 vs £650 for the Marlin 6, would you consider the Marlin 7 to be a no brainier or would that be more mountain bike than an ideal daily commuting bike? Thanks in advance.
Thank you! And it’s likely because that SRAM drivetrain is less expensive than the shimano counterpart, since the shimano drivetrain is the Deore 1x12 which is closer in price and spec level to the SRAM NX eagle drivetrain.
@@jbloggs751 if you can live with the 10 speed Shimano drivetrain go for the Marlin 7 and save $300. Trek does have a two year warranty so you can always upgrade to the SRAM NX if there is a problem with the SX.
@@gilbertferguson1685 yeah I'm in the UK so it's £100 difference here, I'll be getting it with a tax discount so the money isn't an issue really I think the 7 comes shimano deore and the 8 sram sx
@@jbloggs751 I have a Marlin 8 and am happy with it. The tires on the 8 are a little better and the front shocks are air. Yes the 8 has a 12 speed SRAM and the 7 a ten speed Shimano. You can’t go wrong with either bike. Good luck.
The Trek Marlin 6 is also known for being a good bike for doing wheelies, and i want a bike thats good for wheelies. But is it worth it to upgrade to the Marlin 7? Because of the better suspension, better brakes and the better drivetrain.
Very nice video ! I love your way to present and compare bikes 😄 I would like to know if the marlin 6 wheels are tubeless ready compatible ? Thanks in advance for the answer 🙏
Thank you!! And those rims and tires are not tubeless ready / compatible. There are ways to make rims and tires tubeless ready but these do not come ready
I am looking into Marlins and am curious about which one is best for me. I look to ride mostly on trails and gravel roads. What are the main benefits of spending the extra money on a Marlin 7 or 8? Would those be for more serious mountain bikers and do you think I'd get the same experience on trails with a Marlin 6 as I would a Marlin 7 or 8? Would Marlin 5 or 6 be more trail specific and Marlin 7 or 8 be more mountain specific? Which Marlin would I get the most value/highest quality for riding on mostly trails and gravel roads? Thanks! You're videos are very insightful and enjoyable to watch!
Thank you for your in depth review and personal review as well. I chose the Marlin 5 for my 14 year old son's birthday and it was perfect for an all round commuter/trail bike as we live in Vancouver, BC so he has lots of places to enjoy. Now I am looking for myself and based upon your input I believe the Marlin 6 would justify although I like Marlin 7 colours. Question: Would you consider upgrading the Marlin 6 components for quality, durability, and ease of peddling? cheers
You’re welcome! The Marlin 5 is a good choice for sure. And yes I would consider upgrading the Marlin 6 components if possible. It’s a good bike but can definitely be better and you can see what parts you would want to change out as you ride it more and get a feel for the bike

Brilliant video, I’ve just ordered the marlin 6
Thanks!!
Excellent. I’ve just got back into MTB. And this is extremely helpful.
Glad it helped!
WOW----- is one of the best comparison videos in the cycling world. Thanks a lot
I got the Kovee rims on the Marlin 7 when I bought it. Thank you parts shortages...
Won another subscriber, keep up the good work!
Thank you! Much appreciated :)
Another useful video from the king!
Good job 👍
I've been missing out as this video is a year old
Thank you!!! :D
Yessssssss been waiting for this.
Love the vids!
:DDD Thank you!!
for everyone’s information… I managed to pick up a 2022 Trek Marlin 7 here in Ontario (Canada) and it came with MAXXIS IKON tires on KOVEE TLR rims :D. I’m somewhat surprised that they went with the Alpha Silver Frame … my old 2013 Trek Wahoo has the Alpha Gold. Not a big deal but interesting …
I hope mine comes with upgraded parts like yours did too. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻
What a great video, dude!! Great job. Thanks so much.
Thank you too!
Thanks so much. Big help. I was really into marlin 6. Now im convinced
You're welcome! Glad it helped :)
Awesome video and you're an awesome youtuber.
Forgive me if you mentioned this and I missed it, but the Marlin 8 only comes in XL, not XXL, for us tall guys!!
Thank you!! Appreciate your comment :)
In regards to the derailer, would I be better off getting the 7 and upgrading the tires if I don’t really need the air forks?
GREAT video.. Please do a review on the 2022 Roscoe Lineup, especially since they now have a Roscoe 9 and it appears the frames are different. THANKS! 🇺🇸
That'll be my next vid!
Very nice video ! Thank you very much for all these informations. 😊
Thank you too!
Best summary/comparison anyone could ask for, well done! I picked up an M8 a few weeks ago and am still trying to get used to the SRAM shifter, but I love the bike. Do you think the derailleur is the weakest link?
Thank you!!! And yeah the derailleur in my opinion is the weakest link for sure
Im a beginner so got me the 22 Marlin 5…. Im loving it!
Nice!
I just poached your the marlin 8 on Saturday. Man such an amazing bike.
Wow, this was excellent. Thank you!
You’re welcome!!
Best comparison video ever. Trek needs to make you a corporate trainer. I will be buying a marlin 6 in rage red fade. Thank you.
Thank you!! Definitely appreciate that a lot :)
Amazing video, thank you 🙌
Welcome!
Thanks you so much this video have help me to not take like 2 hours in search
Thank you for your hard work
You’re welcome :) thank you for watching!
Such a great video, thanks a lot!
Thank you too!
Awesome!! That’s definitely still a great bike so it’s good you jumped on it :)
Thanks. I agree with you. That’s why I bought the 6.
Nice!
Thanks for your work! As always great!
Hey I go to that trek store all the time in downtown Sac, autograph my bike bro? lol, your videos got me into mountain biking and helped me choose what bike I wanted, appreciate all your videos bro
HAHA YES! I haven’t been working as much lately since I’ve been busy but if I do work it would be on Friday or Saturday. So glad I could help out!!
@@TalalipopMTB if I ever see you at work I would appreciate an autograph from you lol, big thank you bro
@@aquilararmando Of course!! That's awesome :)
Everything I needed, thank you sir!
You’re welcome!!
I got my trek 5 in grey half a year ago. It is really nice but shifting in the rear can sometimes be slow from gear 3-4 and 5 the front makes a lot of noise and is a bit quicker but i rareley use the 1st front gear
Broooooo What a review super always u making super super cool I really love it bro. Beautiful explain nice editing, very simple understand. Thankyou so much 🙏🏻❤️🔥😊
Thanks!!!! :D
Thank you VERY MUCH for this video. It is just great, especially for guys (like me) entering to the MTB world. 👍🏻
No problem! Thank you for watching :)
Thank you!! I'm flattered and so glad I was able to help out :D and yes the Marlin 5 for 2022 is a great all around option in my opinion.
Hi great video I’ve just subscribed. Is there any chance you could do a video on the procaliber range or even a review? There’s not much out there on this model so any info would be appreciated.
Thank you! And yes I’ll try to make a video on those; I wanted to wait a bit to see if they’ll be updated for 2022
Excellent comparison. The only respectable fork is on the Marlin 8.
Thank you!
thanks for the comparison! so much easier than relying on the salesman. I appreciate the video!
No problem! Glad you liked it :)
Fantastic review
Thank you!!
This video was really helpful👍
Thanks!!
Wow. Perfect video. Thank you very much and keep it up.
Thank you too!! And I will :)
Great video - thanks - I am going Marlin 6 2022
Thank you too!
Thanks!! And hopefully I can get to Polygon soon; those bikes are pretty cool!
I'm really confused in buying in between 4 & 5. my ride style would be mostly on road and less on casual trails/ beaches.
im considering 2022 marlin 4 because it has 3 gears in the front which may prove for better speeds on roads but marlin 5 is offering lock suspension and
hydraulic brakes and as you said better all rounder.
the region which im in right now experiences alot of rain and snow too
which one you think would be good
I’d say the 5 is better because of the conditions where you live. I think the drivetrain on that bike is still very good for your riding style
Thank you for this amazing comparison video! I'm about to pull the plug on a Marlin 5 Gen 2 for $449 😱 brand new!
You’re welcome :) and nice! That’s a good deal for a new marlin 5
Very informative video, thanks. Was wondering why they put the sram drivetrain on the 8 model but shimono on the others?
Thank you! And it’s likely because that SRAM drivetrain is less expensive than the shimano counterpart, since the shimano drivetrain is the Deore 1x12 which is closer in price and spec level to the SRAM NX eagle drivetrain.
Rather annoying isn't it, I can't decide between the 7 & 8 because of this
@@jbloggs751 if you can live with the 10 speed Shimano drivetrain go for the Marlin 7 and save $300. Trek does have a two year warranty so you can always upgrade to the SRAM NX if there is a problem with the SX.
@@gilbertferguson1685 yeah I'm in the UK so it's £100 difference here, I'll be getting it with a tax discount so the money isn't an issue really
I think the 7 comes shimano deore and the 8 sram sx
@@jbloggs751 I have a Marlin 8 and am happy with it. The tires on the 8 are a little better and the front shocks are air. Yes the 8 has a 12 speed SRAM and the 7 a ten speed Shimano. You can’t go wrong with either bike. Good luck.
M8 I didn’t know which marlin to get before watching this video. I’ve watched the video now, I know what marlin to get. Thank u :)
You’re welcome!
Should have watched it before buying the Marlin 4, but I'm still happy with mine
Marlin 7 and 8 are great trail bikes compared to the more commuter Marlins
Very nice breakdown of the 2022 Marlins! Thank you!
You’re welcome!
Best explanation ever🙏🏻🤘
Thank you!
Should I wait for the 2023 models, or do I just get the 2022 model instead? Planning on getting one this coming May.
I have the same question. I just bought a Marlin 6 Gen 2 Factory orange
