It looks like the kind of car you could imagine John Travolta driving in Saturday Night Fever, with gold chains on, a pinky finger ring, and a red silk shirt open halfway down his chest and an Italian Stallion gold necklace 😮😮😮

It was my 3rd Lincoln. I bought 1978 DJE Blue in 1995. It was my daily driving car. I sold to collector in Poland in 2005.

In 1979 my dad sold Ford cars , I was allowed to go with him to deliver a brand new Mark 5 to a buyer who lived on Vancouver island it was a beautiful green with plush seats and the 460 engine package , I never forgot the ride and how quite and smooth riding it was .They really built amazing cars back then.

An Artistic MasterPiece! I have one just like it. At around 70 years of age I still marvel at the beautiful design. I drove my first new Mark V in 1977 at the age of 22. Have owned many Continentals over the years. This Diamond Jubilee is truly the pinnacle of the Mark series.

I graduated from High school in 78 ..but lucky enough for a salesman to give us graduates 4 a test drive In a mark 5 ..this automobile was the the cream of the cream..nothing like it ..El Dorado was beautiful..but that front wheel drive made it very sluggish..car was simply a masterpiece..later in life I bought a 91 and 96 Lincoln Towncar. Ride and style was unmatched..caddilac didn't have a clue or could stand up to its dependability..LINCOLN CONTINENTAL was and still is my # 1 choice

    • @TerryComo2010

IMO front wheel drive Cadillacs were superior. My 86 Lincoln Mark VII had a terrible tendency to fishtail when turning right and any bit of water was on the street. Did it at least twice and was lucky I never hit anyone or damaged the car. Got rid of in 89 for a Cadillac Sedan De Ville off showroom floor and it went over 300,000 miles!

Worked at Lincoln Mercury back in the day collision repair and paint on these cars a really enjoyed working on these cars Ford did a great job on simplified engineering of the body. We had to replace the roof panels along with the gold colored glass mirrored moon roof. At that time in Los Angeles area people were actually taking a saw and cutting the roof off the car and stealing and doing some kind of a custom body work somewhere else on the planet. We would call up the auto wrecking yard and get a roof with the full sunroof mechanism in it and transplant it onto the mk4 because their original roof had been stolen. Dreaded when a Cadillac would come into the shop because it was so damn difficult to do body work on hidden bolts and screws emblems that were bolted on and places where you couldn't get to them to remove them extremely sharp edges with cut our arms. Definitely a Lincoln fan of this model. And those Ford factory 4-channel stereo 8-track tapes were awesome.

Beautiful & AWESOME MASTERPIECE!! Mine wasn't a designer series, but, with the moonroof, 460 4v engine, traction lok rear, & a so called QuadraSonic 8track, I ♥️ driving it. I had traded a gorgeous 76 Buick Electra Landau coupe fully equipped, & a whole lot of $$$$ to buy my new Mark V. Gr8 memories driving up/down the east coast, NYC to Coral Gables. Plenty highway passing power, but, a bit thirsty. But, all well worth it. I still imagine it with today's technology.

Beautiful! The dash in the Diamond Jubilee Editions was "leather wrapped" and the door panels featured the unique design with wood grain on top and the seat backs had inlaid "tapestry" design material that was quite elegant, too. Also unique to the Lincolns of this era was the "power mini-vent window" portion of the windows that retracted first and separate from the entire larger portion of the window. Only the Diamond Jubilee Edition Mark V's had the illuminating Opera Lamps. Lincoln should definitely re-visit this model from its legacy for sophisticated inspirations for their new products!

1:22 I love how he didn't say how much HP made, because it was only 180. Who in their right mind will say: "Hey, we are in a fuel crisis. The most logical thing is to make cars bigger and heavier, while at the same time lower the compression of the engine to make less HP and less torque". And it take pure talent to make a 20 feet long car and there is still not enough space in the back seat. Not to mention how claustrophobic it is with that C pillar, which also had the "feature" of robbing you from rear visability. The 60's were truly the golden age of the american cars.

    • @Mikesclassicautoworld
      @Mikesclassicautoworld  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes sir. By 78 all manufactures had long dropped compression and HP to meet regulations as you know. Chrysler and GM as well. This was the era of all out style and sophistication above all else. Your right it cant compare to some cars HP from the sixties but it would be difficult to find another from that era that rode better or smoother. It was a different approach to luxury then and 180 hp, although much less than earlier years, was enough for normal everyday driving. Torque was a respectable 319 lb-ft, and that's what really matters with a car this size. To understand cars like this you have to see past just HP ratings. I've been lucky enough to drive some and its hard to describe the level of comfort unless you had some time behind the wheel yourself. You're right rear seat leg room is pretty small for a car this size but I don't recall vision problems even with the padded top. Style and comport was above all else and this one has gobs of both. Thanks for watching. 👍

Absolutely beautiful car! I love a Lincoln; I've had many, many luxury cars over the years, but I always go back to a Lincoln. One thing here; you mention the ashtrays and how everyone smoked back then....what a crying shame to expose such a beautiful luxury car to something as filthy and nasty and as putrid smelling as cigarette smoke! My parents DESTROYED each and every new car they ever had within 6 mos. of ownership with their filthy Goddamned smoking habit which, by the way, would go on to kill them both. I am the only one out of a family of 7 who has never smoked and never will. I happen to love that new car smell, and I actually work hard to keep that scent alive in all the new cars I buy. My 2020 Lincoln Continental still smells brand new inside. Anyway, I would love to have a car like this one, but I just never had any luck with those old carbureted fuel systems, so I was SO glad to see fuel injection become a standard thing on American luxury cars.

@@Mikesclassicautoworld I just wish I had the money to keep a stable of select, classic old luxury cars like this one! Young people today only THINK they know what a true, high quality luxury sedan is and what it should sound and feel like. Even with my 2020 Conti, there's just no comparison to this one, actually all of the true luxury cars of that time; they just floated seamlessly and quietly down the highway, totally isolating the occupants from the harsh realities of the road, and I REALLY miss that! Dealers tell me all the time, "Oh, no....you don't want THAT, you want to be able to FEEL the road!" Umm, NO...I DON'T, nor do I want to HEAR it, either! The old Buick Electras were also quite nice and soft riding and quiet as well. I LOVE THAT COLOR, TOO!

M 400, it is actually faster than the 460, but shifts more and gets less gas mileage.

Beautiful car but the 400 was too small an engine for such a heavy car better off with 460 v8

I will never understand why they put a standard Ford LTD steering wheel in their top luxury model😮

You're right. The later Mark VI had more usable interior room but was smaller overall. Love them both but the Mark V is special. Size does matter. Thanks for watching.

All 2 door luxury cars in 1978 had an automatic seat back release. So it is either malfunctioning or the battery is dead.

Why would you buy a monster sized car like this, and the exclusive diamond jubilee version of it...and then cheap out and get the small motor 😮😮

I guess because both motors have their advantages. Thanks for watching.
