  • I’d venture to say this is the most in depth review of the 1977-1979 Lincoln mark v on the tube. Just wait until you see the interior of this one... super nice clean example of the mark v... lots of colorful period correct advertising in this one... tell me what you think in the comment section =)

Younger people might not realize the power antenna was a necessary item because vandals would break off the antennas as well as ripping off hood ornaments. Great video!

@@What.its.like. Yeah, this was way before antennas were molded into windshields. Hood ornaments became spring loaded to prevent vandalism during that time. Also, somebody probably already said this - you said there were two switches on the drivers door that raises or lowers the seats. Those were for the windows.

@@austinevplab7167 The springy hood ornaments were more of a safety feature, so if a person hit it, it would just bend over rather than impaling them. Anyone wanting to steal it could just pull it up and cut the cable, or if you pull hard enough it can just pop off. I know because it happened on my Cadillac.

I used to own a 1976 Thunderbird that was almost EXACTLY like this one. The only differences were, rectangular opera windows instead of oval, no spare tire hump in the rear, no hideaway lights (which you did not mention) and round gauges instead of square. I had the 460 motor. Yes the steering was floatie but when you realized in this era there was a direct correlation between the smoothness of the ride and the lack of feel from the road, you quickly come to your senses and learn to LOVE the steering. I lived and drove in NYC. Many people thought I was crazy for driving such a large vehicle in such a crowded city. Because of this car I became a pro at squeezing through tight spaces and parallel parking. Late 70s (and some early 80s) rear wheel drive American V8s were the nicest cars to drive.

All original car still in new condition even plug wires still have 1978 date on it. Mine is white with burgundy plush interior with burgundy half vinyl roof, wire wheel caps.

I had the ‘78 also. Mine was triple Burgundy with the plush velour interior. I bought it when it was only about 8 months old with about 7000 miles on it. New it was $17,800. I purchased it for $8000 from a laid off Ford Factory worker, who was unable to make payments. It was the most beautiful car, especially for a 21 year old.

I drive and sold these new in HS. I’ve owned over 10 1980-83 Mark VI’s all with less than 15k miles but most in the 2-6k mile range. I had 43 years of true love with these and just sold my 83 Pucci, with the original tires and window sticker to a true collector for over 35k. My cars were without flaw and I never had a moments trouble. I know these cars like the back of my hand and I know all the part numbers by heart, plus I can diagnose issues for people by them telling me the symptoms. All of my cars were original owner cars, so they had been taken care of. I’ve owned both the two and four door SS, just like the one you showed in the video, except all of mine had leather interiors. I love the 351 and I love the 302, either engine makes me happy. The car you showed was a car that I actually had a chance to buy from the estate of the original owner, back in 2003. I had so many at the time that I passed on the car and had an elderly friend in Detroit buy it, it had like 2k miles at the time. He passed away and it was sold two more times until it landed with its current owner. Anyway, these cars are not junk, unless neglected and unless it has passed through a bunch moronic hands. To me the Mark VI was the culmination of perfection of all the formal Marks. When I had them, no one paid much attention, now everyone that knows about them wants one. My 4 dr 80 SS in maroon, was my favorite of all. It is now with a good friend and when he passes away, it comes back to me. They are probably one of the most reliable cars I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned over 50 in my lifetime. They weren’t ever junk, ( except for the base (base) models). If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

My town car I raced a Camaro it wasn’t anything special it either had a 305 I think at 305 in it Mid 80s I blew his doors off it was so funny because he was just like. HOW? The trick to the AOD cars or the automatic overdrive transmission cars if you put put it up to about 20 and you slam on the gas it takes off like a rocket 04 products now with the automatic transmission they all do the same thing my brother had a 2013 mustang
And he tried it in that and it was absolutely incredible you should’ve saw the smile on his face he was smiling ear to ear fastest I’ve ever gone in the car was in his Mustang.

Great vid!! I recently inherited a '79 Thunderbird Town Landau convertible (yes, that right: a convertible) from my dad who bought it from the original owner in '83. The 'Bird was manufactured at Ford's Los Angeles plant and approx. 250 of them were then trucked down the road to American Custom Coachworks that Ford had do the conversion. Has 28,200 miles on it. Black with red/maroon interior. All original except for wire wheel covers, tires and a replacement rag top. It has many of the same/similar design elements from the windshield forward as the '77-'79 Mark V. One of the first comments made by almost everyone who sees the car is, "that's the longest hood I've ever seen!" To which I reply, "there's a king size bed under there." The '77-'79 generation of T-Birds - with close 1 million produced - was by far the most successful generation of the 'Bird. I believe one of the main reasons - if not THE reason - is because it's design similarity with the Mark V.

This video brings back great memories. I have never driven a Lincoln or owned one, but I have always loved these cars. However, when these cars were new in the late 70s, one of my neighbors owned one. I once was a passenger in my neighbor's Mark V. It was very luxurious and comfortable, and it was very stylish inside and out. In regards to the Mark VI, I lived in a different neighborhood when these came out in the early 80s. My neighbor then borrowed his boss's new Mark VI. It was a beautiful, maroon 4-door Signature Series that was fully equipped. But it was a lemon according to my neighbor even though he was just borrowing it from his boss. The owner of this new Mark VI agreed it was a piece of junk, so he got rid of it. Guess what he bought as a replacement? A late 70s Mark V.

@@What.its.like. Nothing I would say is a killer story. The car has original medium blue paint and white vynal top with white leather interior and black carpet & dash. I had all fluids flushed, rear-end rebuilt, new brake packages on all 4 corners, tune-up on the engine with HEI upgrade, and electric motors now control the headlight doors as the Vaccume canister is no good and no rebuild kit available, and has stock style single exhaust. There are 2 dents on the right door with surface rust on the hood most likely from sitting under a tree. She will go into the body shop next month with plans to strip the top and fix the 2 rust bubbles under the vynal and fix the door dents. Paint the original medium blue over the body of the car and paint the top white. Pearl Magenta will be added to the clear coats plus a little cobalt blue pearl just for the white top. The seat covers have yellowed plus a few tears so all new white seat covers will be installed. She rolls on thin whitewalls and original hubcaps. I plan to put her in a few shows before selling and getting into my next project, a 1967 El Camino, with a 1940 Cadillac on the back burner. BTW - my daily driver is a 2007 Lincoln Town Car. As a big guy in my 60s I need the bigger cars and like the luxury ride over the sport suspensions of today's cars.

Love this car, the correct name for the tire hump in the truck is "The Continental kit". Correction, the 1974-75 Chrysler Imperial was the first US non Sports car to get 4 wheel disc brakes as standard equipment, 1965 Vette was the first US car to get 4 wheel disc brakes as standard equipment. Tom Selleck makes a before Magnum PI appearance in the 1979 Mark V brochure, see the "Collectors Series" section. @@What.its.like. Nah, he's wrong... "Continental kit" is the aftermarket add-on consisting of the necessary extended bumper and adding an actual encased rear spare. My Mark IV had 4 disc brakes standard, difficult to say when they came in. Ford brought innovations in on Torino, T-Bird and different Mark editions, usually before the Mustang.
As for yhr huge difference in weight, Ford did use heavier laminated steel on Continentals. You can tell by rust patterns around welds or attachments where humidity would enter.
Ford is very coy about this, they don't want to acknowledge huge changes, effectively downgrades to single layer steel... Noisier and less strong.

The last one that I went and looked at it was the nicest of all of them it was white it had maroon interior I had just about every option that you could get 351 engine digital dash the whole 9 yards leather seats the nice leather seats sunroof we ran out of gas on the test drive and had to push it. That’s a car maybe one day I would love to own but there’s so many other cars that kind of eclipse it now. I had an 88 Lincoln town car signature series that was one of my favorite cars of all time and I always wanted a two-door version of that car and that’s kind of what the Mark six is. They made a town coupe version but those are super rare they only made them like one year one and a half years or something like that before discontinuing it

Gr8 informative video, thanks. In 1978, I bought a brand new Mark V . Fully equipped, moonroof, etc.. but, I couldn't justify the price of the designer series. Almost double the price. But, I enjoyed mine with the "460-4v" traction lok axle. I was single, so, it was more than enough for me. I drove my "V" up/down the east coast. I installed VOGUE tyres, improving an already gr8 ride. I loved the car. I piled up a bit of miles on it by 1980. My mechanic warned me (75k miles) that expensive repairs were coming up. It sure hurt selling it. I imagine this AWESOME MASTERPIECE w/today's tech. I'd buy it instead of my big suv. In 1980 I got the Mark "VI", which I found quite sporty. But, I got scared many times blowing the horn to warn others. I kept forgetting the horn was activated by the turn signal Stalk. I got the 351 2v with 4spd Overdrive. Just missed the big imposing size of it's predecessor. Handled better, but, not the ride as smooooooooooth. But, I still enjoyed it.🇺🇸

What a great story thank you so much for sharing that awesome memory =) . I wanted a mark VI for the longest time but everyone I ever tired to buy was a lemon. The last one I went to look at was the nicest. White. With red interior digital dash leather has the heater mirror and outside temperature gauge mounted on driver side mirror. It drove and the ride was smooth, and it would giddy up. During the test day I swear I could hear angles sing for a split second the sky went from gray overcast to clear blue sky. Until we ran out of gas. I kid you not, the moment we ran out of gas it started to rain (weather changes that quick here, in you live here you’ll know what I mean). So yeah that was the best one I ever saw but I thought about it and the price was good $3,500 is what they wanted 125,000 miles. After thinking about it decided not to get it because I didn’t have a garage big enough to put it in

Every time I would accelerate from a dead stop it would lean towards empty. During warranty work, a tech told me to NEVER TRUST IT. So, I didn't. But, running out of gas during a test drive , big guy Welcome to the club!! These cars are so isolated, & comfy, & fun, I would forget to look @ the gauges. The first Lincoln Continental already had the making of a European styled, understated and elegant prestige vehicle, and paint and hand pin stripping aside, would possibly compare favourably? However, the 56 is my favourite, and shall for ever remain so, Jay. The body height VS width proportions are striking immediately, and no over complications in the grill or other detailing, leaves it the perfect and elegant limousine. The RR used the GM Hydramatic, as it was the only unit available with the smoothness for a heavy limousine that could also cope with the power of the 5.7 litre Rolls-Royce engine. The British had developed many exceedingly heavy-duty gearboxes for their WWII tanks of course, but, well, they were tank gearboxes, not smooth limo boxes.

Worked at Lincoln Mercury dealer back in the day when these were popular did collision repair and paint. They were remarkably engineered easy to work on. If a Cadillac came into our shop for repairs we would scream and say boss no please they're too complicated. These Lincoln's drove really well the little 302 was perfect for it no they weren't powerful. The electronic interior was incredible, they drove nice they ran good. However we had to replace a lot of the gold colored glass moon roofs, somebody was cutting the entire roof off the car and stealing the sunroof assemblies for car show cars or who knows what. But again the auto wrecking yard had replacements and it was quite easy and profitable to install and weld back in and paint. And we also sold the Pantera.

@@What.its.like. The Mark VI I owned was a reliable car overall. Had the brakes redone due to age and changed out the fuel pump also due to age and old gas, etc.
Lots of people consider them to be an ugly car. But considering that Ford required the designers and engineers to build a 3/5 size Mark V in a short period of time, I think they did an amazing job. Looked like a Lincoln, drove and rode like a Lincoln and had above the Cafe standards for gas mileage. The only things I didn't like about it was some of the ergonomics for seat controls, window controls were quite a bit off center requiring the driver to almost reach back behind himself to push the buttons. Basically, anyone interested in buying a Mark VI knows what they are getting: a luxury car with just adequate power and a bucket full of American style!

HI Jay, the power aerials were a wonderful thing in their day. The modern units being auto-activated by turning on the radio, and the aerials height extension being set by band selection, i.e., short for FM & longer for AM band new vehicles have the aerial most frequently incorporated in the windscreen or rear glass, or the phone pod antenna. Glass embedded antennas are terrible by comparison in terms of signal strength and signal-to-noise ratio, so the radios are more expensive than they were, as are the glass with aerials. So a double expense for a net loss, really. Hey, progress man.

    A few points ...
    1. The 460 was not available at all in 1979. CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards made this impossible.
    2. Unlike the Mark III, the IV and V were body-on-frame construction.
    3. A weak point for these cars was around the trunk latch. Because of attempts to shave weight the steel used on the trunk lid was thinner. As a result, the little strip of metal to which the trunk latch was attached would tear, and closing the trunk lid would be a challenge.
    4. Another weak point: the vent windows. The window regulator assembly for this entire rig was insanely complicated, and as a result the vent window would come off the track. This would make it impossible to close the window without disassembling the entire door (ask me how I know this).
    5. Surprisingly, this car had a full-tank traveling range of about 200 miles, roughly half of what every other car on the market at the time had.
    6. The fake convertible top on the '79 Bill Blass was poorly designed, in that it would hold water on the roof but under the fiberglass fake top. This would cause the roof to rust out, and subsequently every time it rained water would pour in over the windshield.
True store: I had a 1979 Bill Blass Mark V with the fake convertible top. I was driving to work one day, and one of the rivets gave way and the entire top blew off the car and crashed into the passing lane of I-95. Because there was a trade ware going on when the car was built and imported Japanese steel was, at the time, much less expensive than domestic steel, American carmakers were actually importing steel from Japan. As a result, I found -- on the metal panel that had been screwed over the opening for the opera windows -- that one of the workers on the assembly painted "Made in Japan" using the sealant used for the windshield.

There never was a Mark 1. The first car that actually had the name "Mark" on it was the 56 Continental Mark II.
It wasn't until years later until people started referring to the first generation as the Mark I. Nowhere on the car or in any literature of that period is it referred to as a "Mark."
Also the only reason there was no 1943-1945 Continental is the same reason there are no 1943-1945 Amercan cars period.
Because of a little incident called WWII.

Great episode, all bullshit aside. I even got my son to check the 56, and he took his time too, he loved it, and when I noted the perfect proportion between car height to width ratio, he suddenly saw that too. Not all people see it leaping at them initially, but once it is seen it can't be unseen. Maybe I came to it later on, but can't recall now. And I can't unremember it, either?

11:05 Cornering lights have actually made a comeback in recent years, after many carmakers had dropped them after the allowable headlight beam was widened by the NHTSA in the 1990s. You see them on most Chrysler, VW and BMW vehicles and on many upscale Nissan cars and SUVs. I don't know if Cadillacs and Lincolns have them at this point, but many of their models feature headlights that pivot around corners and these are sometimes supplemented with fixed cornering lights and other times considered a substitute for them.

I liked the mark 3, 4 and 5, the 72/73 Mark 3 black on black with the wire wheels was the best.
After the Mark 5 it was a joke.
    The hood was 6' long!
(Not counting the iconic grill and head light section!) The 460 engine was gigantic.
After it was " tuned up" it was a monster!
And sat 5 or 6 people in comfort.
It was a different time. You can build 3 modern cars after it was melted down.
I actually had one (72) black on black, It guzzled gas (8 to 10 miles per gallon) and it was way too soft suspension made it seem like it would "float" down the highway.
BUT tweak it with new gas charged shocks and actually tune the engine, dump the cast iron exhaust manifold ( together they weigh over 90 lbs.!) And replace them with 429 headers it was a different animal.

Years ago I came across a used 1979 "Continental Mark V", in very nice shape, at a decent price. Best of all was the color scheme: the paint was a pale lavender metallic (that "Ford" had the audacity to call "Light RED Metallic"!!!!! 😡), the black vinyl top over the opera window, and a cranberry red velour interior. It ran and rode beautifully, so I bought it as a surprise birthday gift for my semi-elderly Dad. My parents enjoyed and kept the car 2 or 3 years, until the gasoline and maintenance bills became prohibitive. Then they downsized to a 6 cylinder "Mercury Marquis" (aka the "Ford Fairmont"-sized sedan...). My buddy wanted to buy my Dad's "Mark V", but was trying to get it at a ridiculously low price, so he lost out on the deal. However, he did subsequently find another gorgeous black and pale gray model with slightly less mileage, so he was happy. Thanks for your wonderful video! Brought back a lot of great memories!!! 👍 😀😍🤩☺😃

First of all, I hope this place is not a ripoff like Maple Motors, selling patched up rusted out cars for ridiculous prices. I bought a white on white (the back half of the roof was white vinyl, no sunroof) with a maroon interior 1978 Mark V back in 2006. Beautiful car. It had the 460 engine and got 8 mpg. It was HUGE on the outside, but very small on the inside. It was basically a 4 passenger car. It didn't fit in my garage, it didn't even fit in my driveway without sticking a foot out over the sidewalk. Not being able to put gas in it, and having no place to park it, I sadly sold it.
The only 2 door Lincoln Mark series cars I'm familiar with are the 1969-1971 Mark III, the 1972-1976 Mark IV, and the 1977-1979 Mark V. All beautiful cars. The Mark VI was, to me anyway, a silly looking, out of proportion, tiny little Mickey Mouse car. Like what they did to the Thunderbird in 1980. Just plain ugly.
The first car sold in America with 4 wheel disc brakes was the 1965 Corvette Sting Ray. My Mark V had the 15" turbine wheels. 15" wheels. With 15" whitewall tires. They looked great, unlike the 30" ghetto wheels with no tires on new cars.
My 2006 Lincoln Town Car has pretty much all the features on the Mark V, including the cornering lights. It is much smaller outside, and has more room inside. Unfortunately it looks like a huge egg. It doesn't have the beautiful styling of the Mark V or the late '70s Lincoln Town car.
