Todays weather will be clear with a 1 in 8 chance of a white dragon encounter
Today’s weather is a red dragon wait cin’shy a dragon? AAAA MY SKIN IT BURN TELL MY MOM I LOVE HER
One in 8... I wonder they were all chromatic dragons or if a few were metallic dragons.
I forget... What did they cast or do to cause this roll?
@@BenMan8881 Nothing, just Mercer's encounter/travel hazards generator for the journey they had.
Way more than 1 in 8 lol, she rolled a d20 first, got and 11 which led to a place where she had to roll AGAIN and roll a d8 and THEN rolled an 8 lol. That Dragon REALLY wanted to kill them and Ashley's dice are accomplices. Look at Matt's face, he's like Hmm, interesting, you managed to find the one nuclear weapon made of past mistakes laying out in this open field. That's talent. SPOILERS FOR C2 about the dragon Her name is Gelidon, The Nightmare in Ivory and this is not the first time that they've met, so no, it's not a random dragon generator.
Matt’s body language when he said “you rolled an eight!” told me everything I needed to know.
As a DM some of my favorite moments are when I get to have that happen. You look at your notes and it's like ok he rolled.. oh... oh yeah
he had JUST mentioned on Talks that there was one he really wanted them to roll and they fuckin got it
I literally sent 'OH GOD WHY DID HE SMILE LIKE THAT?' in the group chat when that happened
To be fair to Ashley, if they _had_ to roll an encounter with Gelidon, this was the time; when they had five other potential targets with them.
But the events that happen after the fight is the real consequence
I see Ash-o-Lee has picked up Marisha’s book-as-hat panicked action.
I think that's actually a feat.
Adds +1 to AC but takes both your hands, so no making an attack with it up.
@@OverkillDM Bookish Defense 😁
New its just a free action
Bookish Defense.
Spending much time with scribes, notetakers, and other pensman, you have learned how to defend yourself with a book.
-You gain a +1 bonus to Intelligence
-On your turn (no action required) you can use a book that is being held by two hands to assume a defensive state. While in this state, you gain a +1 to A.C. and protection against yelling from your party members.
Matt: "The day is clear. The weather is fine"
Tal: *press X to doubt*
"I ROLLED A DRAGON!"
"we've had eights that are bad" seconds before a dragon is summoned by another 8.
He said to roll and then do a second roll with a D8, so i'm guessing the ELEVEN was dragon, and the D8 determined how powerful the dragon was. So when he said "You got an 8?" it's because now he gets to throw the uber dragon at them.
@@haku8135 More like 11 is "combat encounter, high-end" and 8 out of 8 is simply labeled "Consequences." Or "Gelidon," which is easier to fit into a table.
@@haku8135 SPOILERS
nah, they've met this dragon before, and they were in her territory, so that wouldn't make any sense. They're pretty territorial I think. Like the other person said 1-7 was probably like Pack of wolves, ice worm, etc.
"I rolled a dragon! I'm sorry!"
Best thing I've heard all day.
Personally I preferred her statement from later in the episode regarding Gelidon;
"I summoned this b*tch, I'm gonna END HER!!"
@@Strong5Bad A fair point. I took points off for swearing.
When you roll for weather and the weather is dragons.
M9 reaction to Matt's "of a massive white dragon"
Travis: Disbelief
Laura: Excitement
Liam: Excitement
Sam: Shock
Ashley: Mortification
Talison: Calculation
Marisha: All of the above
*Taliesin
@@Julia.Taunton-Clark99 my apologies
Ashley: "I rolled a dragon!?"
Me: "No, Ashley. You rolled THE dragon!"
That moment when an ANCIEN WHITE DRAGON ends up being a ressource bait before a big fight... That was crazy
My favorite parts of this fight were: 1) Everyone (but Travis mostly) kept calling Gelidon a "he" , and Sam asking "C'mon Matt, can't we just change it?" And Matt's reply: "NO! She is the Nightmare in Ivory, and you will respect her!" 2) When Gelidon started to escape, and they started to realize it, Ashley going, "NO! I summoned this bitch, and we are going to end her!"
Yeah, misgendering is sooo fun! I just love reliving discrimination
@@benja1378 ohhh my god.... you're fun.... can we be friends please please?
@@benja1378 Yes, cause your name is Gelidon, and you are a White Dragon.
Tbf, Matt's voice for her was extremely deep and gravelly. And also, male or female they still understood one thing
They were fukt
Fun fact about Gellidon.
According to Matt, She was Vorugals Mate.
I love the urgency and tone in Matt’s “What are you doing?” Heck, it was making me nervous and I wasn’t even the one having to fight this thing.
That moment taught me something about DMing. It doesn't matter how detailed your description is. All that matters is making your players feel like their characters would.
It only took 4 words and he made everyone panic with tone and context alone. Dat boi gud.
@@BeinIan It seems to be good to squeeze your players a bit. Make them feel like there is a time limit to light a fire under their asses.
Matt's grin as he realises just what ashley rolled is great
and Travis laughing KNOWING that something baad just happened.
Taliesin absolutely saw into the future. He hid his face in a "oh he is d e f i n i t l y trolling us by pretending all is fine" way XD
yeah they've been friends a long time, taliesin knows the "this'll be fun.... for me" look by now xD
@@OriginalCreatorSama Hey :3
matt: ....and you can see the blue sky
Tal: ohgawd
To be fair, when you're storytelling, you don't say "everything was perfectly normal" unless you're about to pull the rug out.
The fight with Gelidon isn't as stressful as the one in the latter half of this episode... My god...
They were 12 powerfull person in this fight but the other fight was very different
The triple counter spell had me sweating
Gelidon they went at guns blazing and drove an Ancient White Dragon off.
Tomb Takers they went at piecemeal, and nearly lost people over and over.
The M9 are too clever for their own good and way stronger than they believe themselves to be.
@@Noon3rs i think they got traumatized by lorenzo. So now they’re being couscous.
@@_____2219 wait they're being what? Honestly had me dying laughing.
I have found gifs of Ashley saying
" I rolled a dragon".."I'm sorry " 🤣🤣🤣🤣
One of the many glorious memes of Critical Role
hello gelidon my old friend, we've come to fight with you again. because of visions softy peeping, planted seeds while they were sleeping, and the vision that was planted in their brain, still remains, it's just the sound of violence
I loved this encounter, I can't wait for round 3!
"And so ends the story of the M9"
Well, considering everything that happened due to this roll.. almost Sam, almost
The girlish scream Travis makes when he realizes which dragon it is is the best part
to think this isn't even the worst thing to happen this episode
0:26 I love how you can see Matt’s eyebrows raise as he looks down and confirms what the 11 means
Like he’s already realized what could potentially happen
Like getting the first three lottery numbers. "C'mon, gimme an 8... YES!"
And the dragon was the EASIER encounter that episode too.
That says a lot…
*SPOILERS*
By the way, I wish caleb went through with his plan, but supportive of his decision not to.
Im new to this, when are they gonna roll the dungeon?
Goddamit this joke is gold
Take my ‘like’ and get out of my sight!
Rime of the Frostmaiden has a random encounter like this is in the book. You can randomly step on an ancient white dragon while trekking through the tundra. Whoops!
When I ran it the party encountered her at the Dark Duchess while they were still only 5th or 6th level. Super stressful but through clever usage of illusions and being stealthy they were able to escape and hide in the snow for a few hours before the dragon got bored and flew away
Tbh this might have been a modified chart that was originally taken from Rime of the Frostmaiden. Roll for random event, the 11 is a random fight. Roll for an enemy, the 8 is an ancient white dragon. Then in true improve fashion Matt decided the ancient white dragon would be the one they already met in the past.
Clear blue skies, the storm is passing, 4-5 hours into your peaceful travels.... *A FUCKING DRAGON*
to be honest, she could have rolled a nice weather and Matt just added a dragon because he is a sadist.
no that's what the 8 was
The sadist part was Otis stealing Fjords bag of holding mid fight.
@@jasonreed7522 that had... nothing to do with either of the two comments before yours?...
Like.. that was _just_ a spoiler of a different moment and subplot of events to come, and nothing else lol
Pausing at 2:56 gives the absolute best reactions from the group, sam and travis with a big smile, ashley hiding behind the book, taliesin with the closed fist to his mouth, laure and marisha just in shock and liam in disbelief
amazing that the one who hadn't meet her called her forth
Ugh I relate to this so hard. My party and I were playing around with this switchboard in a hall that was keeping a menagerie of high CR monsters in cells. My dumb ass rolled the magic number that released a fucking SIBRIEX and NIGHTWALKER. We barely made it out alive.
You survived a nightwalker? Nice!
@@playtoyx Our DM was definitely generous with our interpretation of some high level spells :P
I threw a phane at my party. They handled it rather well, all things considered!
Laura, trolling: Is it a dragon turtle?
Gelidon: YOU WISH! It was the Dragon Turtle!
I'm so glad that this has happened to someone else as I am the bane of everyone's existence in my group for random encounter rolls.
My luck includes.
An ogre for a level one party of 3 people.
More trolls than I care to count at levels 2 and 3
A young green and black dragon at level 4
A kraken at one point, I forget what level.
Fog that melts people
A storm of literal blocks of cheese.
Sudden bouts of narcolepsy. Sorry rogue.
An earthquake.
Fucking mammoth mating season.
And a portal to the shadow fell.
I lost it when I read mammoth mating season
Honestly, if you're gonna go out, a Kraken isn't a bad way to do it.
I'm still amazed at just /how/ important this roll was.
Like, yeah, they fight a dragon.
But consider the other possibilities: A good roll would have let them get to their destination with no issues to the point where there would be no need for a rest, meaning the Tomb Takers wouldn't have tried to steal their Bag of Holding.
A slightly worse roll would have made the trip go longer, but the Nein would probably have been more well equipped to fight the Tomb Takers.
Heck, since Otis stole the Bag during the fight, there's a good chance that even with some of the other possibilities, there wouldn't have been a chance to take it.
And then you get to everything that's happened since the Bag was stolen and just, man. Butterfly Effect.
"I rolled a Dragon!.... IM SORRY!!!"
Famous last words
“What are you doing? What are you doing?!”
PANICKING MOSTLY??
Ashley’s little “what I do?” is so fantastic
Man, this is another showcase of why Matt is such a great DM.
It's pretty obvious now that Ashley rolled for the dragon on a random encounter table. But instead of going "As you travel, a dragon swoops down and attacks you!", Matt instead lulls the party into a false sense of security, foreshadows that something scary is coming with the wolves (Which, if the party was jumpy enough, could have given them the chance to prepare or even avoid the encounter) before then dropping the bomb that is a massive dragon bearing down on them.
I was thinking the same thing. It would have been so easy to immediately go "You hear this whooshing sound, like the flapping of a pair of large wings, getting closer to your position", and many DM:s probably would, hoping for a reaction from their players (not throwing any shade, I know perfectly well that I am guilty of it; it's just so easy to get anxious and eager about the cool thing that you have planned, that you forget to take the time to properly build up to it). But that doesn't build tension or trepidation anywhere near as well as drawing it out in this manner does.
After all, there's a reason why something as simple as the vibrating water cup from Jurassic Park went on to become such an iconic visual.
But they wouldn't be able to escape at all because the dragon had there scent,so the dragon knew they were around in that location where it landed, unless the M9 had a way to teleport or go to another realm they weren't escaping it
I loved it.
The battle was awesome.
If there was a time to do it, right then was the perfect time.
I wonder what this implies for gelidon's future plans.
Hard to say what a white dragon usually plans. Typically, they hunt out of instinct, but Giledon has shown she's far more intelligent than any other white dragon I've heard of
@@shoylerk9973 I think she may be a recurring theme, like if they forget about her and go to the north again, she'll probably be more prepared than this encounter (like fjord forgetting ukotoa when he goes to the sea and having to deal with an unexpected encounter).
Gelidon runs into pumat sol and gets bitch slapped into oblivion.
@@shoylerk9973 I think that intelligence is why she lived so long, given white dragons are considered one of the weaker dragons. It’s probably also what got the attention of the Chroma Conclave
1:21, I have no context but this dude just wiped out a comedically large hip flask and I'm dying.
Lol, Sam is playing an alcoholic goblin. The flask is a gag with throwbacks to his old character who was a gnome, and he had a comically large beer mug.
Sam plays small characters, so it’s a visual gag based on the perspective of his characters.
The rendition of it in campaign three was hilarious as well.
In contrast, for a brief period in their first campaign, he did play a normal sized character with a normal sized mug. But the character was rich and the mug was gold
@@philipcorley5713 Good ol Tarry, Vex and Percy’s first son 😜
Oh wait, second. I forgot about Trinket 🐻
Matt gives me so much joy I love him.
Ashely hiding from the dragon by putting her book on her head is the best thing
Best part is this was the campaign her character hooked up with Marisha's, with Marisha known for wearing her books as hats whenever in a tense and stressful situation. She's picking up her in-game girlfriend's habits
I need a t-shirt with Ashley image at the moment she said: "I roll a Dragon, im sorry"
I love how the music picks up and slows down at the perfect times
That was great to watch lol.
"I rolled a dragon!"
"Is it a dragon?" nervous giggles.
she wasn't rolling for weather, she was rolling on an encounter table and rolled a world boss.
which had almost entirely been different weather effects up until this point
You’re fun.
2:56 here we discover how Ashley captures the essence of Ellie in TLOU: She rolls a dragon for the weather.
I love everyone just waiting for the inevitable disaster that’s about to happen after seeing Matt light up like that 😂
It would have been so ironic if Fjord used his sword to cut Gelidon
(Unless Gelidon had something to do with it having broken, the only thing I can think of that would make this ironic is the iceflex needed to reforge it having come from her lair, right?)
@@alecLogan they angered her when they did the iceflex stunt for Fjords sword. So definitely not ironic, just a cruelt twist of fate for Gelidon.
From her perspective.
1. These petty humans come mess up her lair and make a fool of her
2. She hunts them for revenge and finds them
3. They have more friends than she planned on
4. One of them attacks her with a sword she is responsible for having magic again
5. She is forced to retreat and is humilated a second time
Why is it just yesterday that I realized Ashley was Chrissy Seaver in Growing Pains, also the waitress in Avengers?
The funny thing about panic is... They don't realize they literally left a dotted line to their precise location in the snow.
At some point in the first campaign the cast convenced themselves that dragons have Truesight And Matt just calmly watches each time they back away from doing things to better hide themselves. think he corrected them once with a roll from Vex.
This whole thing was a stressful and terrifying episode. I still can’t get over it.
I yearn for the one-shot when Isharnai, Gelidon, followers of Uk'otoa, and basically anybody with any sort of vendetta against the Mighty Nein form into a Legion of Doom to get revenge... and Lord Sharpe is there too.
I loved that bit. I laughed so hard. I rewatched it like 3 or 4 times. “I rolled a dragon! “. Lol
You know he had to bring the dragon in from the card reading
I have the memory of a fruit fly, could you explain what card reading?
@@imkabochan jesters tarot card reading from previous episode I think
A pack of wolves. They aren't running at us even though they have us out numbered. We are fiiiiiiine..... Right?............ Guys?
Partly cloudy with a chance of Dragons in the morning.
"You jerk! You said it was gonna be partly cloudy!"
"It is partly cloudy! The other part is a dragon."
To put this into perspective, there was-assuming no duplicates, which wouldn't really make sense, but who knows-a 1 in 160 chance of this happening when it did. It would be interesting to see the total number of daily encounter rolls that were made so that the overall chance could be determined.
I bet it's because of the card reading
Couldn't say without Matt's notes unfortunately, because he's been sliding in new encounters when old ones are used up. For now we don't know if ole' Frosty's been in there from the start.
@@guybuckridge7326 Yeah I mean, what if it had been the M9's favourite bandits again instead. I kinda hope they are still on the roll table.
Encounter tables usually have ranges. This was probably a "big monster" range, with 8 choices of monster.
Today’s weather forecast: strong winds with a risk of dragon
Just for the record
the weather today is slightly sarcastic with a good chance of:
A. Dragon
B. You're screwed anyway
Player: "I rolled an eight." DM: "You rolled an eight!" Heh, more ominous words have never been said.
3:01 Tell me Taliesin doesn't look like some kind of alien/fantasy creature.
He is...😂
ah yes, let us cover ourselves in snow and hide there from the Apex Predator of the Tundra, who, among other things has blindsight, a very good nose and seems to fly in our direction = has probably seen us already
I loved that moment so much, especially with Lucien going: "ah shit it's a motherfucking dragon.."
This was the first episode I watched live. It was amazing.
I'm just thinking of Ashley as Peter from the jumanji cartoon(because she is) and rolling the dice doing this exact thing lol
2:55 the Alethiometric depths of one four-word phrase!
Matt happy
happy not good
KEKW
Matt: *grinch smiles*
It was at this moment when Ashley knew…she fucked up.
i had been predicting this since this was well within Gelidon's territory and she had made the statement about having their scent. That feeling of vindication when Matt started describing the encounter. ^_^
Every Weatherman's nightmare "id rather have forecasted a tropical storm with heavy rainfall instead"
Poor Ashley - I rolled a dragon!?!? hahaha
The dragon was the easy part of this day
sometimes i look at sam and he is doing like 5 bits at once
Damn you, Ashley Johnson--you've doomed us all! :D
Taliesin's eldritch powers told him the truth
What's funny, when I was watching the previous episode, I was thinking "Hey, it's been a while since they encountered that dragon. I wondering it'll show up now that they're in a snowy area."
Roll to see if you can identify an octahedron.
See this is why you don't piss off ancient white dragons and if you just so happen to do so avoid said dragon's territory and about 150 miles beyond for the rest of your life because they *will* find you...
0:46 that face, that tone of voice says it all..XD
we had this happen to us in a campaign im playing in. We ended up encountering a dragon and sacrificed an npc so we could get a head start and ran as fast as we could. We were level 3
wait I recognize her.. she was on the tv dollhouse for like an episode. she was the body ALPHA stuck ECHO's original personality in.
0:55 "And so ends the story of [The Mighty Nein]..."
Spoilers
But this could be true though! The dragon fight gave Otis the chance to steal Fjord's bag, which caused M9 and TT to fight at an already weakened state, which caused them to retreat back to Rexxentrum for a bit, which caused them to speak with Astrid, which caused them to steal the anti-divination necklaces, which is causing Trent to hunt them down, which caused them to go to Hell..... They are at a new low they may have never descended to if Gelidon never came back.
I've rolled 2 Kraken so far in games I've been in so I understand this chaos well.
what exactly was it that caused this roll?
rolling eight was a BAAAAAAAAAAAD idea
the 11 rolled a dragon, the d8 rolled its age-category I guess, 8 being ancient.
let's be honest... fjord's the one who got them into that fight. travis just wanted to fight. he was bored and wanted a battle.
Shimmy shimmy ya, shimmy yam, shimmy yay
Sunny With a Chance of Gelidon
Watching Talisin, I really have to wonder if he knew what that roll meant.
Silly DM, that's not weather.
I rolled a dragon! ... these nutts ...
Sunny with a chance of Gelidon
1:22 he’s drinking out of a box wtf
This was so epic live lmao
Dragons don't have truesight actually, so marine layer might have avoided this whole fight.
They don't have truesight, but they do have very good sight. They also have very good smell and this particular dragon already knew their scent. It was probably already to late to avoid being detected.
little tip for any new players to DnD. If you DM gets excited after having you do a double check roll... strap the fuck in.
Wait, dragons its a clime??? 😱😂😂
What?
High chance of being frozen solid and eaten like an popsicle
Well, they do change weather around them and their lairs.
