I love how into the world building the cast gets. I laughed when someone said “it’s just a one-shot” cause the cast was building and adding enough things for a small campaign and I love that.
Beauty of collaboration, someone says something and other person gets the idea that will build up on the original, especially if the group has great imagination
They were also tapping into their own teen years too. Like, Springvale Springs HAS to have a mall, the water tower make out point, the sketchy skatepark, two arcades, the late night diner, and “the good comic book shop, not the other one”.
@@waltercosta2067 it’s also possible that they could do daggerheart stuff with guests and bring back these one shot character that just happen to be older now too
At our school, the Gym teacher was also tapped to teach Drivers Ed. It was kinda hilarious: not only did he have to dress like a teacher, he had obviously never spent a single day in a regular classroom.
My school has one woman teach orchestra, band, and choir. Another woman teaches P.E., Sex Ed, and Driver's Ed. Rather than build an actual gym for the high school, the high school students just walk down to the middle school and use their gym.
Laura has played a melee character before, in Titansgrave, and it was tons of fun. (And Titansgrave is overall excellent, GMed by Wil Wheaton, and the players were all great.)
I love that Taliesin, at least, understands the importance of Denny's to teenage troublemakers of the late 80's/early 90's. Most towns/suburbs had them, they were the only places that were open all night, and the staff there did not look twice at a group of 15-year-olds sitting around smoking and drinking coffee. If you wanted to sneak out of the house in the middle of the night to hang out with your friends, your only choices were Denny's or the secret tree house in the woods, which he also wisely identified as an important landmark.
I love that marisha's playing a skater and that she's playing wayfinder cause skaters spend so much time looking for skate spots a that just makes sense
A really fun character connection in this kinda setting of teens is being the boyfriend/girlfriend that goes to a different school and no one else in the group thought you were real lmao

Stoner Druid is literally one of my PCs (which I never get to play because I'm the Forever DM). To be precise, an aged stoner surfer druid (Circle of the Sea).

Guys, if it's the 80s, then you need a drive-in movie theatre somewhere. There also needs to be a record store that's both in the mall and stand alone.
The stand alone is where you can get obscure vinyls and bootleg tapes. And they sell pipes and bongs behind a curtain in the back. The other store is just a boring Sam Goody.
Heck there could be stores owned by people for just about everything you could buy including decent food... and one person could work one full-time job to provide enough to easily support a family of six people...

Marisha wanting a skateboard as a shield reminded me of the first time I played d&d with the boy from next door. He was 10 and I was babysitting him. He wanted the exact same thing, a skateboard as a shield!🤣
We have a Dragonborn Monk in our D&D game, who began using an Ironwood shield as an acrobatics/parkour/combat prop for more theatrical manoeuvres. My Witchlight Carnival-raised Harengon Druid crafted some wheels onto it so he could use it like a skateboard. This certainly enhanced the theatrics. It looks like this is not a unique concept after all!
One of the intersections of animal and instrument is Bagpipes and I believe it would be hysterical to see someone druid shift into bagpipes, idk how it'd work but I wanna see it.
Plus 'Stand By Me' and 'Goonies'. Also, when Taliesin said "there's always gotta be a place with abandoned cars" - this SO reminded me of Joe Hill's "Horns", which is very alike to Matt's alluded-to PC transformations. I also was waiting for someone to suggest the town be called "CastleRock" or "Derry"
Yeah, this may be my favorite video from Critical Role. There's just such a good vibe around the table, and everyone seems to have a lot of fun making up their teenage characters and the town they'll live in. And then there's Omar the Mascot chilling on the table, of course 🙂
I love the idea of Daggerheart being able to be used in various time periods! DND and pathfinder can be very awkward when it comes to setting adjustment
@martinjrgensen8234 every single good ttrpg game has mechanics that can adapt to the players imagination, it's just some are built to work better than others
In theory, any system can be almost any genre. Some require more work. 5e so long as its high fantasy adventure can be modern. Horror I feel you want a d100 system where you are particularly squishy.
I'm just happy that someone's finally playing a ranger that isn't a beastmaster as a CR PC. Nothing wrong with beastmaster (except in D&D 5e-2014), but other archetypes exist that don't get considered. The default assumption at the table seems to be that the reason to pick ranger is to have an animal companion. Previous CR ranger PCs were Vex, and Tony Hale's Sarge, both beastmaster. According to the wiki, NPC rangers have mostly been non-beastmaster: * Seeker Assum (C1) pure ranger, unknown subclass, but with the skirmisher's stealth feature from UA * Purvan Suul (C1): beastmaster ranger * Dagen (C2) multiclass fighter/ranger * Artana Voe (C3) hunter subclass * Olly (of the Greenseekers) (C3) So I'm excited to see Marisha play a Wayfinder ranger, which has some similarities to 5e's Hunter subclass. ("Play the Wayfinder if you want to hunt your prey using deadly force.") Plus, loner skateboarder is an archetype that looks like it should fit an urban ranger very well.
Yes, but then they seemed to stray away from those C2-opening stereotypes as the character gen progressed. They became more inspired by their new creations
When Taliesin said "there's always a place with abandoned cars" - this SO reminded me of Joe Hill's "Horns", which then made me realise that this sounds very alike to Matt's alluded-to PC transformations. I also was waiting for someone to suggest the town be called "CastleRock" or "Derry"
YES this was my thought braces nerdy science kid but with an artists heart so like if Gretchen and Mikey fused into one. And it’s really appropriate cause Ashley voiced Gretchen! So cute
as someone with an embarrassing amount of time in cities: skylines, i adore the communal map building! such a fun way to inject personality into a locale
Marisha's is great because that kid has probably had to learn to find her way through new places very quickly so would probably just instinctually memorize street layouts in towns.
When is this one-shot being set? 80s? When was McGyver on TV? If you are indeed accurate, then it's an awesome suggestion for Tal's character. If not - then he should keep 'backyard chemist', but have his dad be the local FireChief, rather than a cop/Sherriff
Loner new kid skater knows the town from skating around looking for good skating courses, and being friends with exploration and niche urban knowledge more than other kids.
Ashley asking to beast shape into musical instruments made me think of Peter & the Wolf, wherein all the animals are portrayed by different instruments.
I love love love the idea of them being the characters they played in the Campaign 2 original opening. I always wondered what the design process of that theme was and I love this so much.
Marisha's character is the kind of kid with a Swiss Army Knife always in the pocket, and wanted to be in the boy scouts, but couldn't because all the moving from place to place.
Okay, but that instrument/druid idea is actually really fun! It's got me thinking of Peter and the Wolf vibes - in that work by Sergei Prokofiev, each of the characters/animals are represented by specific instruments: Peter - Strings Bird - Flute Duck - Oboe Cat - Clarinet Grandfather - Bassoon Wolf - French Horns Hunters - Timpani
Oh my god, Taliesin's character is shaping up to be exactly one of my best pals as a teenager. He had the shittiest car in the land! It was some sort of sports car from the 70s except it was so, so rusty that he had to use cardboard, duct tape, and a school lunch tray to patch the holes in the floorboard! And he was a nerd who, uh, had a little "side business," wink wink nudge nudge.
Idea: The original name of town was Grundlebrush, named after the original prospector who surveyed these lands in days of yore (the river being the Springvale). The 'Atomic Corporation' arrived in the late 50s to build *something* , and pumped $$ & resources into growing the town & population. Prominent landowners at the time were the influential Spring family (owners of, among other things, the local Slinky factory). The 'Corporation' pushed through re-zoning & renaming the town in order to make it seem more appealing, middle-America sounding (to obfuscate their activities perhaps?). To honour the Spring family who donated land for legacy infrastructure (new school? Mall? Both?) - the town was renamed after them. Hence the map now reads "Springvale Springs", named after a family NOT the source of the Springvale River. (Strange serendipity: the actual source of the river is a distant waterhole called "Grundlebrush Spring". How weird!)
They know their audience. Came for the character creation, stayed for the Omar cam.

"This will be edited..." followed by immediate hard cut. 😂
I have never so badly needed to see a one-shot. This whole thing is mind-blowing brilliance, I need this.
I love the idea of Daggerheart being able to be used in various time periods! DND and pathfinder can be very awkward when it comes to setting adjustment
Trying to mash a single rules set onto every type of game is also folly.
I'd also be happy to see a product for conversion between Candela & DH
@@martinjrgensen8234you made GURPS crying 😜
If Marisha plays the loner kid and also a Ranger, does that make her the Lone Ranger? 😊
And her skateboard is painted silver, but she calls it 'Sliver'. "Hiho Sliver. Away!"
According to the wiki, NPC rangers have mostly been non-beastmaster:
* Seeker Assum (C1) pure ranger, unknown subclass, but with the skirmisher's stealth feature from UA
* Purvan Suul (C1): beastmaster ranger
* Dagen (C2) multiclass fighter/ranger
* Artana Voe (C3) hunter subclass
* Olly (of the Greenseekers) (C3)
So I'm excited to see Marisha play a Wayfinder ranger, which has some similarities to 5e's Hunter subclass. ("Play the Wayfinder if you want to hunt your prey using deadly force.")
Plus, loner skateboarder is an archetype that looks like it should fit an urban ranger very well.
What a treat on a Friday afternoon and drawing from the Campaign 2 openings is genius and as a kid/teen of the '90s, I love this idea.
Yes, but then they seemed to stray away from those C2-opening stereotypes as the character gen progressed. They became more inspired by their new creations
this crazy 80's show needs to be more than just a one-shot.
ashley "can my beast forms change into intrsuments" johnson! LET HER COOK!!!!!
I love how the cameras focus more on omar than on the one whos talking. As it should be.
I'm really looking forward to the daggerheart story. I'll probably never see a live show but I will really enjoy the video!
So basically Ashley’s character is if Gretchen Grundler had powers
YES this was my thought braces nerdy science kid but with an artists heart so like if Gretchen and Mikey fused into one. And it’s really appropriate cause Ashley voiced Gretchen! So cute
[52:43] The cuteness!!! That is a balm for my soul 😊
yes! that was so cute!
as someone with an embarrassing amount of time in cities: skylines, i adore the communal map building! such a fun way to inject personality into a locale
Can’t believe Omar stretched and no one said “Big Stretch.”
Marisha's is great because that kid has probably had to learn to find her way through new places very quickly so would probably just instinctually memorize street layouts in towns.
52:43 this little moment between them is the most precious thing imaginable
Ashley’s beast shape is just a Princess Diaries transformation version of herself
"backyard chemist" could just be "watched too much mcgyver"
I was about to say that!!!
That’s a meth chef
🤷🏼♀️ Could also just be a bored farm kid
When is this one-shot being set? 80s? When was McGyver on TV? If you are indeed accurate, then it's an awesome suggestion for Tal's character. If not - then he should keep 'backyard chemist', but have his dad be the local FireChief, rather than a cop/Sherriff
@@CheeseWyrmMatt said at the beginning, vague late 80s early 90s. Show started in 85. Timeline fits perfectly
What a nice surprise for the end of the week. And Omar on the table!
I think this is the earliest I've seen one of these go up.
Liam "I will never play a bard" O'Brien
That Reverse-Legolas joke was really underrated😂😂 Really looking forward to the oneshot! I come back to Night before Critmas every holiday season❤
I'm listening to Sam and Laura build their sibling relationship and going "please don't do Cruel Intentions, please..." 😂
I'll be terribly surprised if there isn't some one-upmanship, but I don't think there'll be any debauched sibling ribaldry
Loner new kid skater knows the town from skating around looking for good skating courses, and being friends with exploration and niche urban knowledge more than other kids.
Ashley asking to beast shape into musical instruments made me think of Peter & the Wolf, wherein all the animals are portrayed by different instruments.
And the oboe has a solo😊
@@kohakuaiko better yet - oboe is a duck. The thought of Ashley's character waddling around and quacking makes me very happy
1:13. I had a friend whose dad was military. If she missed a cultural reference, she’d say “ I was out of the country at the time.”
The way that Marisha and Matt looks at Omar melts my heart! They absolutely love that dog so much! And he is such a chill boy.
Little Omar, he's just so chill and like "Mommy and daddy do this all the time and im just gonna sit here like a good potato"
no clue how matt would make it work but transforming into instruments is HILARIOUS
"Imagine being a teenager and then becoming something you never wanted to be", Matt says as I sit here in my accounting job.
I love love love the idea of them being the characters they played in the Campaign 2 original opening. I always wondered what the design process of that theme was and I love this so much.
How does Tal roll my favorite character **every** **time** lol
“I’m Cory Feldman from the Lost Boys”
Boom. I’m in.
Then it got *better* 🤣
I needed this. Looking forward to the fun, wholesome holiday shenanigans.
Marisha's character is the kind of kid with a Swiss Army Knife always in the pocket, and wanted to be in the boy scouts, but couldn't because all the moving from place to place.
Okay, but that instrument/druid idea is actually really fun! It's got me thinking of Peter and the Wolf vibes - in that work by Sergei Prokofiev, each of the characters/animals are represented by specific instruments:
Peter - Strings
Bird - Flute
Duck - Oboe
Cat - Clarinet
Grandfather - Bassoon
Wolf - French Horns
Hunters - Timpani

Oh my god, Taliesin's character is shaping up to be exactly one of my best pals as a teenager. He had the shittiest car in the land! It was some sort of sports car from the 70s except it was so, so rusty that he had to use cardboard, duct tape, and a school lunch tray to patch the holes in the floorboard! And he was a nerd who, uh, had a little "side business," wink wink nudge nudge.
Taliesen: "Probably will be selling drugs in about four years."
Rewatching campaign 2 opening: *is wearing a DARE shirt* 🤣
I absolutely loved the Omar moments and the step-sibling history. Definitely a fun session zero!
Sorry, hearing Liam and Ashley talking about their characters mom being the Sex Ed. teacher, has me hearing Stacy's Mom!😂😂😂😂
How weird!)
