The fact you're doing all this without any engineering background really makes it that much more impressive! It always amazes me not only how well they work, but how efficiently all the triggers and levers and everything fit together in a tight space without interfering, especially with things like this that move around so much
You don't need to get deep into engineering when building a homemade crossbow/ slingshot. All you need is highschool physics in order to do a few energy calculations so you don't end up with a weak weapon or one that requires too much strength to draw. Joerg can build a bridge. An engineer can build a bridge that barely works, as the saying goes.
The first engineers didn't need a degree they just needed logic. Hell, the historic monument's that still stands today after millenia weren't made by people who got a piece of paper after 4 years.

Thats cool y'all, i used to make slingshots when i was real young. My moms a nurse so she had tons of turbiquettes all over. Just take a Y shaped stick and tie on the ruber band and get a piece of leather from your pants, n boom. It would shoot rocks soo far. You can even swing your arm with it and it'll fling your projectile even further.. I used to just fire it in the neighborhood, still dont know where those rocks went! Be caredul yall i couldve killed someone or did damage to property.

Most of the crossbows and the longbows are made of fibreglass resin heated in a Mold at a right temperature, some where made out of metal aluminium but most were made from fibreglass resin, the stock was wood and aluminium...

The de-cocking feature alone outclasses a lot of modern crossbows. For those you’d either have to shoot a bolt or use the cocking device to ease it out from the firing position. I’d like to see a full sized version.

Joerg, I would recommend getting yourself a 3d printer, even if you don't know how to build 3d models for it yourself. For one, they are TONS of fun! But more seriously, even if you can't make your own models, there are tons of freely available models for printing out there, some of which you might find useful for your builds. And modern commercially available printers are not only a lot cheaper than before, but also a lot more precise. You can get a very good 3d printer for under $300 US, and spools of filament or bottles of resin generally run you around $45 US, and one spool or bottle will last you quite a while. A bit of advice from someone who's used both type of printers, you'll probably find more use out of a FMD type printer (the kind that take the spools of filament) considering what you're likely to use them for. The PLA or ABS plastic they use has more strength than most resins, and they tend to have a larger build plate, meaning you'd be able to print out larger parts. PLA and ABS also takes to sanding pretty wall, and ABS can be smoothed and polished using acetone quite easily. A SLA (resin) printer though is much better at getting very fine details, and the prints they produce are usually much more exact than those produced by FMD printers, however the cured resin can be quite a bit more brittle than PLA or ABS, though it's possible to get some types of flexible resin to produce things like washers or gaskets. As for the software they need, if you're getting your files online to print out, you really only need to worry about the slicing program. This is the software that takes the model and converts it to code the printer can read to know how to go about printing the model. It also places supports in areas where the model will need to be held up during printing. With FMD printers in particular, all you really have to do is position your model in the build area displayed in your slicer program, and maybe adjust a few settings for layer height, infill, or support generation. The biggest concern is orientating the model for the best print, and making sure it's well supported so you don't have any unsupported areas (else you end up with what I like to call a 'spaghetti failure'). It's honestly well worth getting into, especially in your line of work. Infact, I've already seen a few people who have been making printable versions of your designs.
The part that has me most intrigued is how the trigger release allows the return of the bolt assembly, very unique way of removing a persons motion from the equation.

Joerg, have you thought about making these with reverse draw limbs? I imagine you could make it almost as compact as this one with actual limbs, and as the heaviest, sturdiest part is attached to the handle, you might even be able to make the lever and magazine assembly lighter. With the double-string assembly, you might even be able to make some kind of a reload assist using the same limbs.
Tod of Tod's workshop also shows that steel bows have a speed limit. Even a 1000lb+ bow doesn't move a projectile faster than an 800lb bow, it is just able to move a heavier projectile. Steel isn't an ideal bow material.
I think with the correct steel like tempered spring steel, you can get good performance. Sacrificing a little speed for power can be worth it, and you can definitely make something formidable without needing such large draw weights. You want to use steel that wouldn’t have been available during medieval times, then again nobody had fiberglass back then either.
I honestly don't even care about crossbows. I just feel happy watching his terrifying/heart warming laugh and seeing him being enthusiastic about his newest toy/creation.

Instead of blueprints for builds like this, maybe close-up shots of the disassembled parts, laid out on a grid mat? That would make it easier for people to reproduce designs, or translate them into stl.

I used to be a helicopter engineer in the Army. U got talent and i always love ur contraptions. I built a crossbow but broke leaf trying to string it. hadn't estimated the draw with the leaf bow i had and the purchased draw string. Ur contraption looks funner, but mine had a kewl aluminum trigger assembly with springs and a safety (when the bow was just rubber bands)
Would love it if you sold plans. Either way been following you for years love the content. I know you don't make blue prints but you could film the building process. Wood workers love to watch builds. That note use patrion to have followers watch or do live streams.
I feel like one advantage of using rubber instead of a metal cross piece is that the weapon ends up being a lot less wide. This would make it easier to store or use in tight spaces

Every video, I half expect Joerge to show me a slingshot that hurls angry Doberman Pincers at the target. I haven't seen that yet, but I haven't been disappointed either.

Whenever I see a pistol crossbow with a cocking arm that runs from the "muzzle" all the way to the bottom of the handle, it reminds me of a Bajoran phaser. I love it!
My issue with 3D printing this is that plastic won't be as strong as wood and will seriously limit the power you can have before it blows up in your hands.
Great build Joerg, I am happy you are building projects again. I have a simple solution for those who want plans. Perhaps you could take pictures of each part sitting on a grid such as a cutting mat or graph paper as you craft them. The pictures would give designers a place to start, and require little effort on your part.

that's why you use compound cams. steel, rubber, pneumatic piston- anything goes. same concept as a light gas gun really, just mechanically.

Instead of blueprints for builds like this, maybe close-up shots of the disassembled parts, laid out on a grid mat? That would make it easier for people to reproduce designs, or translate them into stl.

Without power tools (which wouldn't be available in an apocalypse situation), he wouldn't be able to build any of the stuff he makes.

I used to be a helicopter engineer in the Army. U got talent and i always love ur contraptions. I built a crossbow but broke leaf trying to string it. hadn't estimated the draw with the leaf bow i had and the purchased draw string.
Ur contraption looks funner, but mine had a kewl aluminum trigger assembly with springs and a safety (when the bow was just rubber bands)
Would love it if you sold plans. Either way been following you for years love the content. I know you don't make blue prints but you could film the building process. Wood workers love to watch builds. That note use patrion to have followers watch or do live streams.

I feel like one advantage of using rubber instead of a metal cross piece is that the weapon ends up being a lot less wide. This would make it easier to store or use in tight spaces

I dont see why not. It’d be a heavy kind of magazine but maybe.

40 lb draw is convenient, gray exercise tubing is 20 lb.

My issue with 3D printing this is that plastic won't be as strong as wood and will seriously limit the power you can have before it blows up in your hands.

Great build Joerg, I am happy you are building projects again. I have a simple solution for those who want plans. Perhaps you could take pictures of each part sitting on a grid such as a cutting mat or graph paper as you craft them. The pictures would give designers a place to start, and require little effort on your part.
Most of the weapon is glued and can’t be disassembled.
@@Slingshotchannel I understand. The photos would have to be taken while you were creating it, before the final assembly and glue up. Just something to consider. It is clear you are asked often for plans. Thanks again for making videos!
