      The new designs are amazing, and Joerg is without doubt a genius, but I'm thinking that we can actually hear how powerful the devices are by the time between firing and hitting the target. We obviously can't do that with any accuracy just from the sound, but I am sure we can get a pretty good idea. So getting to the point, it seemed to me that the first arrow firing catapult Joerg showed us was the most powerful. There is barely any time between release and impacting the target.

      That 3 foot rubber band stretched out to his eye worries me! If you break the top rubber band, it could prove painful when it slaps you in the face! Maybe a small shield to keep that from happening would make me feel better?

    "I ran into a mechanical disadvantage."
    - joerg.
    Epic!

  • @johnbarron4265
    @johnbarron4265 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The part at 14:27 deserves some more discussion. Without using pulleys or leverage of some kind, any slingshot's mechanical efficiency is limited by the ratio of the projectile mass to the sum of the projectile mass and one-third the mass of the rubber. One-third the mass of the cord used here is probably a decent amount of mass compared to an arrow, which gives you a hint as to how inefficient a slingbow becomes when shooting projectiles that are light for the draw weight. I think a relatively easy way to overcome this obstacle is to use a fast flight bowstring in place of the rubber cord. Then run each side of the bowstring through its own three fold purchase block and tackle with small-diameter, grooved nylon rollers to minimize rotational inertia, where each forward roller is fixed to the very front of the weapon, and each rear roller is attached to some short thick rubber bands with the other ends of the bands fixed to the weapon. This setup provides a 6:1 mechanical advantage, so while your power stroke might be 80-90 cm, the bands only have to stretch by 13-15 cm. The effective mass of the bands is then reduced, not by a factor of three, but by a factor of 108! And the fast flight string would be much lighter than the rubber cord. I could see a slingbow design like this launching arrows at well over 200 m/s. Imagine that level of power with rapid fire capability!

    This is a great development in terms of moving the sling anchors away from the body to build more tension , and thus more power; and there is still the potential to move the anchors further ahead, by using a sliding system to that triangular base to extend it a couple feet further away to shoot, but contract it again to pack it after use. Nice going, keep up the good work Joerg.

    I think you could reduce the length of the slingbow by adding a gear and rack system with two sliders (one for the arrow and one for the fork, so that as you draw the arrow back, the mounting point of the rubber is pushed forward by the same amount. This would let you keep the same draw length, but effectively halve the total uncocked length at the expense of some height. Always nice to see your videos! Keep it up!

    Trouble is, I am a little 150 pound retired mathematician and 62 pounds is far more than I can draw with a release. I had to drop it to 20 pounds and make my own very long thin arrows to get it to fit this old man.

    Maybe make the rubber coaxial w the arrow? Make the "carrier" a "T" w the tail toward the muzzle. The "T" slides in a longitudinal channel. The upper "T" arm carries the projectile, and the lower is attached to the rubber (or spring, or whatever power source). Use as many rubber bands as can fit. They can even be stacked - say, two payers of four bands each. More bands, more power.
    Maybe make it a lever action bullpup. The stock sits on your shoulder, with the magazine *behind* your head. Add a pistol grip far forward, and position the ~18" lever between the pistol grip and the stock. OK, your draw length w a simple lever is less than in the hand-drawn layout, but w/ coaxial power, adding more bands can achieve the same force in a more compact form factor.

    • @nostooge
      @nostooge 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      layers, not "payers"

    • @nostooge
      @nostooge 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, combine the lever action idea with the power-in-series idea, and it's pretty easy to imagine using the forward stroke for the lever cocking the first few bands, leaving the more powerful rearward stroke to pick up most of them. This could increase draw length for even more bands in series, and even more power.

    Add a downward grip post (as you've done in the past) to the end of the far end of the slide / receiver to allow your awesome one handed draw power retention. This would require a long slot (length of draw) in the new fork feature to accommodate the new grip post, and the fork would need to be extended maybe 5 - 6 cm past the far end of the slide when relaxed. The fork slot would be closed / bridged at the far end for strength & stability.
