    Man, if I knew 1/16th of what you do I’d feel like a friggin’ genius. I’d like a sailboat but I can only afford an old one that would need a bunch of these same repairs. By the time I learned how to do it all and actually completed it I’d be too old to sail. Lol. Really excellent work, I enjoyed seeing the progress.

    ive got a 1979 C27 tall rig, did the same thing, every nut bolt screw wire and hose was scrapped. do yourself a favor and ditch the binnacle, go to a tiller, gains about 30% of your cockpit. no reason why a boat that size needs a wheel. a 100w solar panel fits nicely on the sliding hatch too. i actually spoke with Patrick Childress before he passed away regarding his modifications to his C27 he circumnavigated with and i got ahold of his lists of modifications and did all but 3 or 4 of them to mine, and then some including a 3 burner cook range and propane fireplace, radar, AIS, autopilot, LEDs throughout.... my boat was totally rotted out, the decks are rock solid but all in all i replaced 5 bulkheads on top of some serious reinforcements to the standing rigging, there isnt a single piece of deck hardware that doesnt have an oversized stainless steel backing plate, the list of stuff ive done to my boat is so extensive its not even funny, but thats what you can get away with when you work at a boatyard.... bought my boat for 1000$, and i specifically rebuilt it for the trip to Alaska from WA
    biggest favor you can do for yourself is make sure the fasteners youre using are 316 grade stainless steel, anything else is garbage

    Finally I found someone who’s like me who knows stuff. I like how you explain how you do the job. I hate watching morons using tools wrong and having to watch 10 minutes of the guys face before I see something good. I’m a new subscriber since I’m restoring a ‘70s Macgregor.

    Wow - I am looking to buy my first sailboat. Kids and husband gone, mortgage paid. Thought the Catalina 27 would be a good starting point. I'm not sure now watching this if I'm scared away or determined. Your knowledge and skill is awesome, impressive. You should run a consulting service! Thanks so much for sharing - will keep watching.

    • @Catalina27

      Yeah, they are all pretty old and need a lot of work, better off renting and than if you are into in a big way, buy a new boat, or one that is literally only 5 years old. It really depends on what kind of sailing you want to do. At the very least, the standing rigging, motor and electrics all need to be sorted by someone that does this for a living, not the know it alls at the marina. We’re talking thousands and thousands of dollars to have someone else get an old 27 seaworthy, they are great sailing boats, but need those items done right, then the other things like sails and plumbing and winch service and lines and on and on can be done as needed.

    If the stainless keeps rusting. Use osfo on it . it won’t dry good like it does on steel but it will stop the old stainless from flash over with rust.. I have a tayana 55 and make videos on TH-cam . It’s Sv bohemian. I’m going to subscribe. Unique video like it.

      Thanks for watching, Its pretty simple as I described in the video, I just followed the directions on the Pledge Revive It bottle. I only use it on the nonskid as its abit streaky on the ‘flat’ parts. I show how to apply it in this video.

    As a brand new boat owner, this video was very informative. As for the work you did on the cockpit area and deck, did you wet sand all of it with with the 3M product? I thought that was what you said but just wanted to confirm. My top side needs some cleaning and l'd love to replicate whatever you did. Also, did you use that pledge product on the non-skid parts of the topside? If so, how did you apply that? Thanks in advance.

    Very impressive research on repairs. Did you have to lift the boat to completely drop the rudder, wax the shaft, and put the rudder back?

    • @Catalina27
      @Catalina27  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. The boat was on stands in the yard, so I had to dig a hole about three feet deep to drop the rudder, probably can be done in the water as the tube opening is above the waterline even with the radial drive wheel fitted.

    Nicely done. I have a soft spot for the C30 and C27. Great boats. I did a lot of work on the C30 our sailing club had. It is very fortunate you have the diesel and not the A4. Not a horrible engine but gasoline is just not ideal in a cruising boat. For a day-sailor that jjst needs to motor in and out of the harbor it is fine. Travelling down the ICW, not so much.
    What are your future plans? Are you going to go cruising or sail locally? Either way you have a really clean C27 there now. Great job.

    Would you get a 27 again? I am thinking the 30 might have just a bit more room? (two adults coastal cruising)

    • @Catalina27
      @Catalina27  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I like the way the 27 sails. The 30 is good too, and the extra room is nice, but they cost more. I don’t like to sail in anything approaching cold weather so the 27 is fine as I’m not below deck too much. The 27 just seems like a better boat, especially in light winds, and you can drag it around on a trailer if needed.

    When you sanded 800,1500,3000 did you do that progression three times? You mentioned you had to hit it three times. Did you do wet sanding or just dry? Thanks for sharing all this. Have an 85 catalina 27.
