These are such great boats Love the channel
Tuba time👍
I really like this setup, thank for posting.
I bought one, they work great
Just found your channel. Love your videos, and your obvious mechanical and video editing skills. I have a 97 C34 Mk2 on Lake Huron in the Great Lakes. I have pulled the transmission for a re-build (owner inflicted damage) and tried to pull the damper plate for inspection and possible replacement. I was down to the last two cap screws and didn't they both strip! I tried the usual methods and when they failed I tried to use a screw extractor to remove them and broke the extractor tip off in the @#"%$ cap screw. Clearances are tight for a vice grip or small pipe wrench to grab the head of the screw. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Boat is winterized on the hard until April, but I'm getting my hip replaced next Tuesday so if I can't get these out by Monday I'll either have to pay someone to do this job or wait until I can resume crawling again in the spring. John
Bummer, heat the the flywheel (threaded part) really hot with at least a MAP Gas torch, then take sharp cold chisel and a 5 pound hammer and place the chisel at 45 degrees and hit it hard toward counter clockwise. As you dig a groove, adjust the angle til you hitting nearly square to the head. Hit it hard, it’ll come loose.
@@Catalina27 Got lucky. Gave the vice grips another try and after about 30 small turns on each cap screw and repositioning the pliers each turn I had the damper plate out! two of the plate's springs have lost their tension so a new plate is going to get installed in the spring.
Even better.
That’s a big ass sax‼️🤣
Yours is in dramatically better condition than the one I recently acquired. I really wish they made new stoves like this, seems like everything is propane these days.
You may be able to find one on eBay, I had an older Kenyon pressurised alcohol stove on my Cal 25. It was mounted in a drawer for stowage, from the factory.
Thanks for sharing!
Man, if I knew 1/16th of what you do I’d feel like a friggin’ genius. I’d like a sailboat but I can only afford an old one that would need a bunch of these same repairs. By the time I learned how to do it all and actually completed it I’d be too old to sail. Lol. Really excellent work, I enjoyed seeing the progress.
Final product looks like?
In a couple weeks I’ll do a little tour of the finished boat
Thankyou very much.
I really enjoy your channel. I like your no nonsense explanations, and how you get to the point! The topics you cover are spot on , and helpful! And your solutions to repairs and upgrades shows you know what your talking about! Thanks!
Great to hear👍
I am looking forward to seeing the whole finished project, and to see it in action. I have a 1987 boat that is similar to the Catalina 30. As you know , the amount of space over the chain locker is limited. I'm seeing a few ways people are mounting the windlass, but it looks to me, your way is likely the best way to place it.
I'm gonna do the same to mine. What did you wrap it with?
Nothing yet, but probably a bit of the woven header wrap.
Your editing is hilarious, ty for that 😂
Yay cheap Chinese world changing brilliance
It appears the IP67 rating applies to the receiver module, which is fine, but to show the remotes in the water like they will survive if dropped in the water is misleading AF.
There's no fooling you, that's for sure. Great work. Best regards from Jarle
Ultimate neighbor to have, great job staying on task(s)
Thanks, I don’t know about the neighbour thing though.
Hi, I would like to ask where did you apply the 3m 4000? and was it specifically for UV protection?
I use the 4000 UV to seal the moulding trim and deck hardware, both because it might have to come off at someday, and it also because some it will show. The 5200 is only for things that are never disassembled and if it shows it should be covered up, because it will yellow in the sun.
@@Catalina27 got it thanks
I gotta do this to my Cat 25 and this was very helpful. thanks
Can't wait to see your ground tackle set-up.
Rocna 6, I’m thinking.
How much heat did you apply to separate the foils? Heatgun for a while?
Yeah, the trick is getting it pretty warm/hot and hold the temp steady long enough for the whole assembly to get to temp, then the 5200 softens up and then releases, sort of. The joiner pieces don’t survive so only real worry is discolouration of the aluminium and god forbid melting the Au 🤓
@@Catalina27 thank you, yeah I need to separate the foils in order to replace a damaged piece so I'll try applying heat like you said:)
that's pretty cool!, thanks for sharing, love it when I see a new ep from this channel!
Wooo! more!
Yeah, yeah, I know, editing this crap is a bitch 🤨
👍🏻
I love your videos. I have a 27' Catalina that I should be working on. I like your work . Please consider leaving the background music off.
Nice job. Looks great. What kind of paint did you use (8:40)?
How much are you selling the trailer for?
800
@@Catalina27 I'm having a Catalina 27 surveyed tomorrow. I'll be buying it immediately after if everything checks out. If your trailer is in decent and functional shape I'd like to buy it from you. I'm up in the High Desert.
Would you get a 27 again? I am thinking the 30 might have just a bit more room? (two adults coastal cruising)
Yeah, I like the way the 27 sails. The 30 is good too, and the extra room is nice, but they cost more. I don’t like to sail in anything approaching cold weather so the 27 is fine as I’m not below deck too much. The 27 just seems like a better boat, especially in light winds, and you can drag it around on a trailer if needed.
Did you ever think about fiberglassing the deck to the hull for a totally water tight seal?
Nope, I’m not a Naval Architect, but I know enough about structures to know that too little flex makes them weaker. Like a sky scraper that doesn’t sway alittle will come down in just moderate winds, Boats are like that. Making structural changes is very complex and well above my pay grade, and 99.999999% of boat owners as well.
@@Catalina27 I only ask because I seen Sam Holmes sailing do that to his boat. ( Not a Catalina) but he's put 10s of thousands of miles on it in the last few years.
Yeah, I like Sam, he’s the real deal as far as sailing channels, not the sell out merchants most of these AG 1 drinking, Better Health bullshitters most have turned into. I know what these channels make and most are just greedy tryhards phoning it in every week. Don’t get me started 😂 I don’t know his background but his boat is a bit of a hack job but he has balls and skills for sure. He sails when most would be running the motor the entire leg, while making excuses the whole time.
@@Catalina27 100%. I bought a Catalina 30 a few years ago and have been improving it ever since. Totally rewired both 12v and 120v systems. Two weeks ago I pulled the engine by myself to remove the transmission. I rebuilt the ZF 5 on my kitchen table.. lol Just a few more things to button up before a sea trial. I actually share the same marina as Alphi from the channel Life is like sailing.
@84Rabbitz nice to hear, all those repairs matter, people get themselves into unnecessary trouble all the time because they’re too lazy, to cheap or to stupid.
That was weird
The opening ‼️👍🏻
Very helpful for a new boat owner. So you'd recommend simply cleaning the teak with soak and water solution, sanding it, and then apply the teak sealer?
As a brand new boat owner, this video was very informative. As for the work you did on the cockpit area and deck, did you wet sand all of it with with the 3M product? I thought that was what you said but just wanted to confirm. My top side needs some cleaning and l'd love to replicate whatever you did. Also, did you use that pledge product on the non-skid parts of the topside? If so, how did you apply that? Thanks in advance.
😎
C27, Great video. What did you do in your previous life that you know how to do all this stuff? Inquiring minds want to know.
Sailing since 12, working on boats on the side for decades, main job was dealer Mechanic at Porsche, VW, BMW and Range Rover
Good video
👍
Nice video. That was how my water heater was plumbed before I removed it. I also did the C-direct alternator upgrade and rewired to a volt meter instead of ammeter. I have been thinking about an autopilot for years but still have kids to put through college.
Thanks, yeah if your staying coastal, and have a tiller, a tiller pilot works good enough.
Glad to see you back posting videos?!! I enjoy the content and your delivery.
Thanks, even though my editing is pretty much crap, it still takes a long time. There are many more to come, when time allows.
Thanks for posting, the Mighty Car Mods bit at the end is hilarious 😂
INR⁉️👍
That was a very good explanation, funny enough that's usually what you get when people who know what they are talking about explains stuff. I wish it was more of that going on, on the internet these days. Thanks for shearing good information. Best regards from Jarle
Thanks, yeah I just want to convey that being lazy and cheap is never the way to address anything in life, especially boats. It just leads to more problems down the line. Work smart not hard.
😂😂😂😂😂
I used Butyl tape and it failed immediately. 👹
Yeah, my limited experience with Butyl is with automotive, I’m under the impression that many windscreens are installed with it as both an adhesive and sealant. My view is that most deck hardware will allow the sealant to be exposed and I hate smearing shit around and making a mess. Material science is a fascinating field and I try to learn from the engineers who know more than I ever will. I will say that the Dowsil 795 that I glued my replacement windows in with has an expiration date and it should be respected. I spoke with Dow and was told 9 months out of date should be fine, it wasn’t, that expired 795 was still not completely cured after 3 months. Fortunately, I only used it on the last small window, I may have to refit that one.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Did you win the lottery? lol...
Shhhhh
Finally I found someone who’s like me who knows stuff. I like how you explain how you do the job. I hate watching morons using tools wrong and having to watch 10 minutes of the guys face before I see something good. I’m a new subscriber since I’m restoring a ‘70s Macgregor.
Ha, thanks. I hate when channels have long intros and endless drone shots no one gives a toss about.
Wow that turd flew right out of that guy's mouth
So I was out the other day and one of my shrouds came off my spreader and my mast took a hard bend. I don't think there's any kinks in it but there's definitely a bend. Trying to determine whether or not to replace the mast. I noticed the issue when I went to tack I happened to notice the shroud was loose and when I looked up I saw the mast bent like a banana! I de-powered as fast as I could and had to motor a couple of miles to the inlet but made it to port in one piece.
Yeah, that’s a worry. Problem is that aluminium work hardens and the alloy spars are made of won’t bend back without serious degradation. Time to get another one.
Awesome stuff man. Do you happen to have access to a C27 trailer that I can rent or know anyone who has one?? I may want to get a C27 and transport it to my place in the High Desert. Do you have a Instagram? Thanks man.
Thanks, I’m in LA. I will be selling my trailer when the boat goes back in the water in January, it fits my 27 perfectly. I towed my 27 from North Carolina on it, and it tracks really well.
@@Catalina27 right on! There's a project C27 on a slip in MDR that I'm trying to get towed to my house in the High Desert near Victorville. It needs to be hauled out soon. Can I hire you and your trailer to get it to my house?
@daveg4963 my boat is on the trailer til January, unfortunately.
@@Catalina27 don't give up on the channel. It's fun and entertaining and very informative. I'm sure it's also a lot of work on your end though. Thanks for the response. Best of luck on the restoration and I'll be looking out for the next video.
Yeah, thanks. Loads of episodes to put together when time allows.
