- TIPS bought the music rights of Taal by paying a premium and without even listening to it. They trusted the team of Subhash Ghai & A.R.Rahman.
When brothers Kumar and Ramesh Taurani (Founders of TIPS) listened to the album, they knew Taal was destined to be timeless. What they didn’t anticipate was that Taal would become a Timeless Teller Machine for TIPS.
It was The Great Gamble that paid off.

Those questions to interviewees are crisp and clear. It is full of honey in ears to listen about AR RAHMAN sir and it is happening via O2India episodes.
Efforts took to shoot these episode are really great and one has to appreciate the ground work must have done to come up with these many episodes without deviating main point of ARR work and how his great was introduced to cinemas.
I hope in coming up videos there will be other international dignitaries who worked with AR Rahman sir to tell about great stories behind great music tracks.

A small correction. Rangeela used to be with Time Audio, not Times Music. The former was an standalone music company, whose catalogue eventually went to Tips, and the latter is a music label formed much later under the Times of India group.
TIPS, Sony-BMG was really good music compnay. They used to have good Cassette tape and CDs.
This is an incredible series. It’s providing a panoramic view of A R Rahman’s works. I wish the air time was at least 30 minutes per episode. Also, the covers could be slightly more condensed as it sometimes break the narrative.
Please include Thakshak, 1947 Earth, Water music albums in the series. All these are gems which might not have received their right due. Zubeida is another masterpiece which you are covering in the next episode. Also, how the divine number in Fiza by ARR was made. Can you also please include POV of other composers who were contemporary of ARR and those who joined afterward and ARR was a huge influence on them.

Every episode of Rahman Music Sheets is incredible and Taal can go on for atleast 3 more episodes. Such is it's mega impact even today. It's a coming together of so many refreshing things and is like a full-meal for any music lover.
Also, from the above mentioned films which are some rare gems one could listen, I'd also recommend to rope in directors like Shankar, Rajeev Menon, Gautam Menon, Imtiaz Ali, Rakeysh Mehra, Priya Darshan for Doli Saja ke Rakhna and if possible some of his other award winning Tamil hits like Kadhal Desam, Kandukondein, etc. Even with Mani Ratnam only few major hits are covered. We still need to know about Thiruda Thiruda, Saathiya, Iruvar, Yuva, Guru, Amrita and his last National award winning movie. I know its great effort to cover it all but atleast a few major ones are expected from all these. Thanks🙏!

Your videos are great... one suggestion, please give all those featured cover songs link in ur description. It would be useful for most of us by listening in another dimension of ARR’s great songs.
Yes, the cover song videos help to remember and relive those timeless melodies and here, some very fresh faces are singing or playing them is fantastic. But I urge to please select the bestest singers (esp.) because they come in between the narrative, so the least you could do is select singers who don’t irritate your audiences with their singing. Some are really doing great job but the one who sang the very title track in this episode is sounding horrible like some TikTok singer. We can’t expect such singers to pay tribute that too for an album of this stature. It should be ideally selected only if they have that kind of near heavenly voices like Shreya Ghosal or Chithraji but no ordinary voices please!!!

Rangeela released in 1995, that was A.R.Rahman's first movie as a music director for a Hindi film, Voice over says inspired by Taal's success Tips acquired music rights to Rangeela, How the Heck did you guys miss that :)

@@O2india Please get your facts right it was Time Audio - TIPS acquired all the audio rights from Time Audio not because of Rangeela. Most probably Time Audio went bankrupt or cannot sustain business like what happened to Magnasound and Pyramid. Like he said - Subhash Ghai almost always sells the audio rights to TIPS for his movies in the 90s like Pardes. TIPS also wanted original Hindi albums from ARR under their label.
Music-distrbution-combo can create profitable combo.

I still remember looking at the audio cassette lyrical design cover of Taal for hours on end and Tips had done a stupenduous job for the Taal promotions which also added a lot of intrigue and magic complementing the magical music. I also felt the TV commercials back at that time were so grand and stood out for all the blog names that the album has. I feel even the overseas success is also because of the music despite the big actors at that time.

Actually the first Hindi OST acquired by TIPS from ARR was Hindustani in 1996 but it was a dubbed film - then after that was Daud in 1997. TIPS acquired Time Audio and all its catalog of soundtracks including Rangeela and Humse Hai Muqabala. The interview is too short and more questions could have been asked. So much time wasted with videos of cover songs. Interesting that he said they acquired the audio rights to Taal before listening to the songs or they might have heard bits of tracks. Huge risk to take as TIPS still needed to spend money to promote and market the album. So many questions could have been asked - like how TIPS sell the audio rights to overseas audio companies or whether they have the rights to other languages.

Subhash could've casted anyone but Akshaye Khanna. He may have seen a 'failed lover' looks in him and maybe glint of Dilip Kumar's persona also. But, Ghai failed to recognize south's taste in bollywood actors when casring them along with Aishwarya Rai. Aishwarya was a sensation then and Akshaye already started balding. That showed on screen.
