  • The 50th episode of Rahman Music Sheets celebrates 30 years of Roja.
The music of Roja by ‪@ARRahman‬ was path-breaking from the word go; its sound was and continues to be astonishingly fresh even after 30 years. With Roja, AR Rahman transformed the very syntax of Indian film songs. He effectively discarded the templatized music of the 1980s.
Besides Mani Ratnam and AR Rahman, this special episode features Subhash Ghai, Ram Gopal Varma, Shyam Benegal, Deepa Mehta, Shekhar Kapur, Andrew Llyod Webber, Ashutosh Gowariker, Ahmed Khan, Kavita Krishnamurti, Alka Yagnik, Sadhana Sargam and Hariharan.
Roja (Director - Mani Ratnam, Starring Arvind Swami, Madhu, Pankaj Kapoor) was released on 15th August 1992.
Rahman Music Sheets - A series to track three decades of an incredible musical journey of Oscars and Grammys winner A.R. Rahman

You should make an episode on H. Shridhar and team who were in Rahman's team from the early 90s to 2000s. Shridhar was heavily involved in making spectecular sounds and was involved in success of many of Rahman's works. I know Shridhar is no more. But, you can choose someone to interview who knows both Rahman and Shridhar works. Or, (if possible) may be you ask Rahman how he met Shridhar and experiences with him. Just a suggestion!

What an episode! And what a celebration of the Mozart of Madras!! What we forget though, and what young music professionals would do well to remember, is the kind of hard work that he had put in, even before the Roja breakout happened. Rahman (Dileep of course, then) had been around for close to a decade before Roja and doing all kinds of interesting stuff in the ad jingle world, small indie albums and as a session musician and programmer. Those who have worked closely with him can vouch for not just his creative prowess, but also his knowledge of the technical aspects of live/recorded sound and the use of plug ins, software etc. Bottomline, he didn't emulate what was in trend then, but created his own space and USP, something today's youngsters can get inspired from.

Without talking about late Mr H. Sridhar, ‘90’s sound track of ARR wouldn’t be complete. Sridhar was instrumental as Sound Engineer to Mr. Rahman.
Good example I remember, many composers used Pan Flute on their tracks but in Chinna Chinna Aasai Song we hear Pan Flute with more clarity and Sound clarity of every track/RR was explicitly noticeable and transforming.

30 years of Roja soundtrack is a nice tribute on cover than on the episode. Really, the music is way fresh like a hot samosa or pakoda can't be or today's music can't be. It always feels like it released just yesterday. That's the forever impact this album has left on us all!
Happy that most of the cover songs are not irritating and atleast a few legends are mentioned who were part of the movie than who were not. Most moving part is the bytes about Rahman's mother who also got moved like the whole nation did at that time. So are Balachander and Mani Ratnam's words. Hariharna bytes about 'Bharat humko' song is quite true. Very relatable even today. Rahman only can break his records is what even is true till date and we are waiting with baited breath for that magnanimous day!
I saw a particular error in one of the cover credits about Chinna chinna aasai song showing the singers as Unni Menon and Sujata Mohan is one huge blunder. Everyone knows who the original singers are. But why is O2 India not aware of this? It was sung by Minimini who also sang in Hindi may be after the great Alka maa rejected it and there's no male singer here. There's only bgm vocals by Rahman himself. Can't entertain a blunder about a song of the decades as it was mentioned.

    • @O2india
      @O2india  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Dear Mr. Srinivas. Thanks for your comments, appreciation & feedback. Apologies for the error. Credit for Chinna Chinna Asai - is given twice. 2nd time - the credits are correctly given to Minimini. Yes - in the 1st instance - there is an error on part of our post production team. We are trying to corrct it. In fact we ourselves had noticed it but by then the episode had already gone public. We are finding ways to correct it. give us some time. Regards.

I vividly remember watching the Surabhi episode that aired ARR's interview which showed snippets of chinna chinna asai. I hadn't had much exposure to Tamil film music then, but was intrigued by the sound of Roja songs.
Being a Maharashtrian, I was happy that Roja soundtrack was also released in Marathi with really good Marathi translation of the lyrics. It's probably the only Tamil movie with a soundtrack translated in Marathi.
I used to save my pocket money and purchase cassettes of Gentleman, Thiruda Thiruda, Pudhiya Mugam, Duet, Gangmaster, May Madham, Kadhalan, Bombay and so on. I was and even today am totally captivated by this genius called A R Rahman.
I love most of his softer melodies like pudhu vellai mazhai, putham pudhu boomi, oru deyvam thantha poove, uyire, en kadhale en kadhale, vellai pookal ulagam engum, en mel vizhundha mazhai thuliye, uyirum neeye, etc.

Rahman’s music is tailored to the movie and its situational, story and emotional needs, enhancing them to another astral plane. Judging it purely as an audio experience does the work gross injustice. His music is best for the movie scored for and better to be viewed individually, aligning with the director’s vision.
There is an inherent historical problem with Indian perception of film music where songs (mostly) were placed to provide relief from tedious storylines than helping enhance them. Judging on the same principles nowadays needs a thought shift.

It would be amiss if there was a semi classical score for the visuals of O Saaya for example. That percussive breathless song matches the manic pace of escaping kids. It is a pathbreaking score but we whine just because it doesn’t match what we expect… but when has he ever done the expected 😄??!

From an industry standpoint, A.R Rahman was a mix of good timing, good partnership and talent. This was a time where CD's where spread around through the north and the south, and then he would launch into the next generation of social media sharing and Spotify with strength as well. This adaptation is important as his music has just kept on sounding better, not just being well composed.

The theatre was nearly empty that day , because Rajinikanth’s Annamalai had just finished a 6-8 week near houseful run at Aurora talkies . So audience were tired and not ready for a low budget Mani Ratnam movie as follow up

I was in 6th when Roja film came... N it impressed me such, I had a preliminary qualification round for quiz and the only Question I answered was for "Who is the composer of the film Roja? " n got selected. N thanks to d team for bringing back the memories n was waiting for Pudhu vellai mazhai bgm till last second of this episode. But a full episode itself can be made on that single song. That's A R R

That time " Roja " is already hit talk and houseful collection in South India.
And release soonly in Hindi too .
The credit goes to only Roja audio album because Hindi version ADD also aired in Doordarshan ' get caught up " Roja album, hurry up as. I still remembered that add.
Somebody shows ' hey look at my arm " i have Roja cassette ' see how much music crazy ?
It is most fascinate album. Roja changed all minds , this is the way of new way of all music directors.
And Mani sir make up all film directors to make the movies in new style.
The sound track is excellent. In theaters this movie has best sound respond
its fantastic sound from begining movie starging titles wah......
Now am hear sometimes through my mobile headset ' Roja ' s beginning title sounds .

Im from Kolkata and I remember, i was kinda 8 or 9 year old when Roja was released... The music had affected me so much... It was kinda infectious... I just wanted to meet AR Rahman then to see how his god gifted brain created such divine and other worldly sounds and lilting melodies... The music kinda elated me and put me in a different realm altogether.... Absolutely magical... Can't express it words!!
There will not be another AR Rahman till the end of this world 🌎... Period!!
