But fate intervened.
Finally when she agreed, the only songs she was hearing in Chennai were sung …hold your breath… by mosquitoes.
While recording Rahman wanted her to sing on an unusually high pitch - which she thought she couldn’t.

Another remarkable episode. Congratulations! Earlier, I’d used to be intimidated by the ‘cover’ songs as it’d feel like breaking the flow, but strangely, I have started liking them. There is context. Roja was 1992 when Alka ji and Sanu Da rejected Rahman sir's request to sing for him the Hindi songs of Roja. Taal was 1999. In the 7 years, when Rahman sir produced blockbuster after blockbuster with Bombay, Sapnay, Rangeela, Dil Se - He had Chitra ji, Asha ji, Kavita ji, and Sadhana ji from Bollywood singing for him. He did not call Alka ji and Sanu da after Roja rejection. Alka ji was queen of melody in 1990s with almost all major hits and singing for Anu Malik, Nadeem Shravan, Jatin Lalit. So there was a little ego from her side as well (justified) because she was also a star and while she must have regretted not doing Roja and wanted to desperately sing for Rahman sir, she will not just leave everything with other music directors and go sing for Rahman sir like a desperate person. You can see she says 'grudgingly' then the way she says she was waiting for 5 hours, cribbing, etc you can sense a girl who's acting pricy :)
So sorry to say but these cover songs coming in the middle are the worst part of your beautiful episodes. I just hate them. Cutting the feel in the middle. I just hate them.

Ohh, another episode of which I know what she will tell as I already heard her version. But apart from all the good things she said about him, her reluctance to come to Chennai and sing for a Magnum opus is a bit tedha to get it given how ppl. would get crazy at just listening ARR's name when he was also at his peak in career that time.
Well, good for her career; she atleast lately realised and acknowledged his musical impact and saw the truth about him as a person. Rahman was truly great to give chances to a singer who was not really in his favour to sing for him. That's why he's humility is so talked about everywhere!
And for every singer, he gives them high notes to sing and that's a true litmus test for that singer's abilities to sing in with great intensity and soul. In a way, that's the most magical part of that song too in most cases!

what many people dont realize that alka is last of the superstar in singing world. after 2000s when internet and tv singing shows came we have lots of great singers but not super star. Moreover he had done huge work with like of nadeem shravan or jatin lalit.So much we love her work,her career would have been still legendry even without ARR songs.
She ,sadhana and kavita are singers who have started careers with kalyanji anandaji and sung for laxmikant pyarelal,r d buram ,naushas and even c ramchandran.While arr crafted kavitas and udits career,alka had her own success already.
People have to accept that she and arr are big shots in thier own league !

If Alka Yagnik regretted not singing for Roja, she should have gone to Chennai when she got the Taal offer without Subhash Ghai having to beg/warn/convince.

A little hurt from Rahman sir's side as well as I think he absolutely loved Alka ji's voice (who doesn't) and was very hurt when she didn't do Roja. She mentioned cutely in the last video how he kept saying that to her "You didn't sing my Roja songs" :)

I could only partly understand your message. But yes, if she regretted losing Roja she should have come flying to Chennai the moment she got the call to sing for Taal. This time the director, luckily for her happened to be a North Indian. So, she grudgingly agreed it seems, bcoz it's a Ghai's film. I mean on whom she's taking her grudge. Arr was so nice and kind to give her 4 songs to sing here and still she was acting busy to come and sing just because she had to go all the way to Chennai. Again senior singers like Ashaji, Lata ji also had to do the same despite being older than her. Why is she behaving so royal for Rahman? Even after regretting or did she??
It's the attitude. No matter how talented you are, you need to have the right attitude to fly higher! Thankfully we have quite a few artists with the right attitude and big salute to them!!

May be by doing so she wanted to know if the music director is also equally keen to make her sing as much as the director of Taal. As she almost didn't sing for him earlier, she's probably saving face in their unusual professional equation.
@@anantha1201 Yes completely. You get most hurt with actions by people you like the most.The way she says in the previous video that Rahman sir first time he met her it had been 7 years since Roja and first thing he said was "you didnt sing my Roja songs" and kept saying it multiple times :)
How much he must love her voice to request her for his first movie. Also, remember he loved her voice so much, when world forgot about Alka ji he gave her Agar Tum Saath Ho in Tamasha a blockbuster and beautiful song and she features as 1 of the greats in his Meri Pukaar Suno song as well

Yes, you are correct. Here people will educate regional song and national song difference
Not only that, you hardly see any other South Indian singers interviews who have been supporting Rahman from the beginning of his career. It seems singers who rejected him are making for interesting stories to tell for us.
Just Hindi folks doing their sweet talking. These episodes hardly cover the actual person. They are conceived in the Bollywood system and no other works are talked about as if Rahman is a Bollywood composer alone. Therefore this bias that his music are very spiritual, divine or hybrids whereas Rahman is also the hitmachine and very experimental and their is fun in his music. His item songs and dance numbers are beyond any composer Indian or otherwise. The versatility and research done by Rahman is lost here. Thanks to internet his works are more readily available. Just at the Expo 2020 Dubai event he is doing his own concert show, the musicical theatre and the Firdaus orchestra all at the same time. Who does that or is capable of. PS I am from the Hindi belt 😉😉
@@NikZ500 Hey, ❤️ your last punch (the PS one)! But see, ARR is seriously discussed like a Bollywood composer here. Even though they mentioned Tamil films he did initially, the series is largely aimed at wooing the Northern belt audiences. I didn't get this doubt till Alka Yagnik was first chosen to give bytes about him and also they are projecting her as one of his greatest collaborations in his career which I seriously beg to differ. There are so many names who did contribute to his career musically whose names aren't even mentioned here. But it's a big joke if you say Alka Yagnik was one of his biggest contributors in his journey. No doubt, they are a hit jodi but not from the beginning of his career. When I'm trying to say this exactly, ppl here are thinking I'm speaking ill of Alka Yagnik.
In fact, he's contribution is more for her than the other way round. Bcoz anyway he's good at picking up new voices and he almost discovered someone similar to Alka in rendition who's like a mix of Alka and Sadhana Sargam. So, in that sense he hardly needs her voice for his music to be successful. He can do away with so many singers. But still he respected her position in Bollywood and kept giving her chances time and again.
But this series is more clearly aimed at Northern audiences given their favour to interview mostly Bollywood filmmakers.
She is still regret for not singing for Roja ...thats enough i guess
Rahaman sir is the heritage of Tamil nadu
On the question about similarity between music arranging of LP n ARR. After LP I only liked the arranging of ARR. No doubt ARR is best arranger n best music director and that's why he won the Oscar n max number of filmfare awards. ARR uses computer technology ( now used AI too) where he recorded songs in patches n arraging n editing n mixing later, where many facilities like listening befor final recordings, editing pitch , scale , making background/ voice soft or loud etc are available, for LP it was different era of live recording along with orchestra/ musicians,
Laxmi ji used to compose the tune n Pyareji used to write the notes for arrangement of whole song at one strech directly from his brain ( no computer technology n no editing/ re editing facility) n all the musicians were used to stand behind Pyareji and Note the notes for their respective instruments. LP had to record many songs a day, on an average they have done songs for 15 to 20 movies a year along with background score of the movies during their peak time. In one particular year they have compised music for 30 movies. In this regards, I really admire music arranging of LP more. Even though being a fan of ARR.🙏🏻🙏🏻
One can listen to Pyare bhai's Symphony called OM Shivam .
Thiruda Thiruda is one album you should add to this list. If you fail to do it then you can't justice to his works.

Alka ji did great justice with Agar tum sath ho . She sang from her heart . Though I am not her all songs fan ! Like she was superb with Guru songs . Dum Dara , Dum Dara ! fantastic singing . Then Zubeida songs ! Who else could sing those with full emotions ?
Could have added the original version instead of the cover songs…

They are upcoming singers doing a cover and getting featured in a show which would give them visibility. I think it blends well with the show and what a wonderfully nice way to do it by encouraging new talent in the process

Alkaji was bit arrogant to sing with Rahmanji at the beginning. Ashaji always knew the talent of tamil composers as she sang with Maestro Illyaraja.

The covers in between are big turn off 😑😑 either add the instrumental or the original track. Covers are definitely good but no match to the original tracks.

Singer Chitra though her mother tongue is malayalam spoke in English, same way Prabhu Deva in English - u made all the South Indian artists in English and you are letting North Indian artists to speak in Hindi…it is not acceptable even AR Rahman won’t like this…
