Sonu Nigam had recorded Guzaarish song and later the lyrics changed and Sonu Nigam was not available to record it the second time. So Javed Ali was made to sing and they kept Sonu’s alaap as it was very good. This was mentioned in one of the interviews.

And when it comes to Abhijeet. There is nothing but Negativity and prejudice around you.
If you are familiar with how western artists record songs and albums this will not be a surprise. Many bands like Beatles are well reknowned for doing multiple sessions in an album to experiment with ideas before they choose the final version. Rahman similarly samples a lot of styles and uses what suits his ideas. This is not just for singers but with musicians too. He will sample riffs from guitarists and rythm sections and mix them all. It is a creative process, not patch work. That is his style. However I can understand the frustration especially for singers as they sing their tracks in isolation without an orchestra which can be dull.
Exactly. I think in the 70s and 80s, new singers found it difficult to sing with live orchestra. So most of the songs were sung by established singers. Rahman's new style allowed a host of new singers to make name for themselves as stage fright was not an issue with Rahman's style. Singers like Madhushree(Sujata Bhattacharya) won't have made it in Bollywood but for Rahman. The end justifies the means and so if Rahman was successful with his way of working why would he change?. Even the only song Abhijjet did with Rahman was a super hit although the film flopped. If Rahman's approach did not yield the right results, Abhijit may have had a point. Suresh wadkar too was unhappy with having to do the song again. In Suresh's case it was stupid of him to antognise Rahman because Bollywood had given up on him and Rahman may have given him a new lease of life.
Actually this method is better even for singers as they can sing without any distraction and focus solely on their voice and rendition. And they can also focus on one portion of the song at a time. Rahman also said this is for the respect to singer voice as singer dont follow orchestration, but the orchestration follows how singer has sung. Its very dumb for some singers to complain about this method.
I can see it can be problem with some singers in the 90s who used to sing like 10-20 songs in day as a factory like Kumar Sanu. But for rest, this gives them better opportunity to give their 100%.
The song he mentioned of Sonu aur Javed Ali song is Tu meri Adhuri Hai Guzarish song from Ghazini. Humming part was of Sonu and singing part Javed ali.❤❤

There is a youtube video, where ARR and Sonu both have given responses, as Sonu after the initial recording, had gone to US, for his son's birth.. Meanwhile the lyrics had changed, and due to schedule issues, ARR had to get it recorded with Javed Ali. Sonu said, that ARR also informed him that as a tribute to him, he has retained Sonu's humming

As a singer , patchwork is not a good practice. A singer expresses things . This includes rhythm, voice modulation, etc . The entire scenario needs to be visualised and sung.

It was not about preparation. Its his rejection to change. If it was for preparation then the second time, he wud know how rahman workks. But he didn give Rahman second chance. This guy just wants to sing in his own way. rahman respected and didn call him again.

The great music director M S Viswanathan also said the same about ARR after he was invited to sing a song. But MSV concluded by saying he heard the song many months later on radio and he was left speechless with the work ARR has done. Now, that is what makes a person great. But look at this guy. He just fails to understand the intricate working style of another musician and talks about it in a derogatory way.
A singer can sing in Abaswarams and in mixing ARR can change the pitch etc to make it sound perfect. What’s the point? Again ARR’s music actually sounds like a synthesised music, not natural like the old times. Maybe this had to happen. If not ARR, someone would have started this. Probably he introduced it early in the game. Now with AI, you probably can convert SPB’s songs with my voice sample, as if I sang the song!
To be honest ar rehman songs are average at best. Most of the songs have auto tune and most of the tunes are either samples or created using samples.

Not just Abhijeet or Suresh Wadkar - a lot legendary singers from all industries like Asha Bhonsale, S.P.B, Chitra, Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan have said the same about A.R. Rahman. While singing, they have no idea of the actual tune or the full lyrics or if they were singing the Pallavi or Charanam. For the same line, Rahman will try different styles and different approaches. When the song is released, the actual song and what they sang will be worlds apart.
Only difference is, they all acknowledged that Rahman was more of a music magician than a composer - he crafted the song on how he wants it to be. All the legendary singers collaborated multiple times with Rahman and have always sang his songs in their concerts. If some singers are not willing to change with the changing times, it is their choice - but to demean a great musician in an interview shows their maturity.

Rahman works differently and his record shows it works well for him. If Abhijeet had schedule issues, he was right to do what he wanted but Abhijeet has a penchant for loose talk. He says Sonu's Alaap and Javed Ali's voice was used in Guzarish but Sonu himself clarified this recently. Sonu sang the full song for a different film, but later the song was used in Ghazni with different lyrics. unfortunately, Sonu was in US and couldn't sing the song with new lyrics. Sonu said it was nice of Rahman to retain the alaap in his voice.

Rahman has a very intuitive and unorthodox way of working like many great artists. Plus he is not a very communicative perosn. Singers with an ego and pride like Abhijeet will never have a proper rapport with him bcoz ultimately Rahamn will overshadow the final product. A good eg could be how great filmmakers like Ray or Kubrick rarely worked with star actors.

Music is an art. Whether it's recorded in single take or patched together doesn't make any difference. The level of creativity he brought to the table is unmatched and leaves him ranking best of the best in the industry. It may not be a perfect experience for a singer who has crafted their specific skillset over decades but ARR is a true contemporary artist. Many of his tunes were best of the best and I had spent 90% of my life listening to his songs. My Playlist always had at least 30% of the work done by ARR consistently through out the years. Lately, his work has diminished in terms of longevity but songs in his prime days are what kept me going through ups and downs of my life. No other music director can fill in his spot for me.
He is a music director who has created some of the extremely melodious and some of the crappiest songs.... The bad songs are so bad that one starts questioning " Did this same person create this tune? "
Good but Still his works are unique. He keeps updating his style constantly at speed pace. So, many listeners are unable to connect as now a days we are having many songs with many advances, and many talented music directors came into light by taking his works as inspiration.

In the 90s many singers tried to imitate Kishore Kumar. Kumar Sanu was leading among them for a while. Afterwards, Abhijeet, Roop Kumar Rathod, Babul Supriyo, Shaan all started singing in a somewhat similar style. Moreover, Sonu Nigam also started singing in Kishore style in some songs like in Refugee film. That's why they cannibalised each other's market and Udit Narayan sab se aghe nikhal gayethe. I think people like Abhijeet Babu does not understand the trends of voice engineering where it is not uncommon to take snippets and weave them for the best outcome. In early 80s Biddu did that with Nazia Hassan and we saw the magic. Rahaman at the beginning was possibly a bit ahead of his time and these people could not understand how he composes and mixes music. I love Abhijeet as well a Rahaman. Wish they could work together.
Yes, but he should also respect other's time. Someone has come to chennai to sing for him, you can't make him wait a day long for recording just for a few lines or something. He was a very busy singer during 90s, he might have to miss some other big songs in the process. He should inform them about time, schedule and all. Also, if a singer wants to know the lines of song, he should give it. Then, what he wants to do he can do, its his choice. But atleast let the singers know what they are singing about. Many have complained about his working method, it's not just Abhijeet..

Its not that. Why Abhijeet is angry is because the song was sung by Udit Narayan already and then he was asked for patch work on Udit's song.
What Abhijeet is saying is that a great singer's song is patched by another singer because the lyrics change which shows engineering marvels but it sucks out the art.

as a melodious hindi music lovers, what has got to offer in so-called A.R . Rehman music , think of KALYANJI ANANDJI, RAHUL DEV BURMAN, LAXMIKANT PYARELAL, BAPPI LAHIRI , ANNU MALIK, JATIN-LALIT, ANAND MILIND or NADEEM SHRAVAN they had brought memorable melodies in hindi films music over the years.
The 90s singers are used to an old way of song recording and the music directors used to record all songs with the same singer... Musicians like rahman have a very diff way of orchestrating.. its not the old way of recording and in future slowly everything will be more technologically advanced.. yes it does change the dynamics for the singers but thats how it will get..
If you listen carefully AR songs , its all patchwork, singer would not get the feel , other singers have also felt same . careful hear chaiya chaiya you will note the patchwork, talent of Rahman is not question but technical is debatable

"Tu meri adhuri pyas pyas" this is the song he's talking about where Sonu Nigam's hummings were kept and the main vocals was Javed Ali's. Even I was shocked when I heard the song for the first time.. I mean how come Sonu Nigam only sang the hummings??🥹 This is utterly disrespect to a legendary singer like Sonu Nigam..
Sonu Nigam already cleared that misunderstanding. He wasn't available at that moment when he was needed. So the song went to Javed Ali.And to honour Sonu, his humming part was included in the song. Chill out and try to find the answer before lashing out.

It was done with the permission of Sonu Nigam... Had he not approved it AR would have replaced it.
It used to happen before but differently. In the old days sometimes 2 singers used to record the same songs but only one used to be there in the movie and the other one could only be found in the cassette. But Rahman is one level above. He just kept some portions. Normally the singing contract is limited to singing without guarantee of how and where the song will be used. Nothing can be done ... When singers disagree they stop getting songs altogether...

The guy thinks music producers owe them hit songs. What's wrong with a music producer trying out a bunch of singers to test whose voice suits the song the best? That's actually the sensible thing to do. It's no wonder Rahman has a much better track record of introducing new and fresh singers to the industry than the rest. The second would be Pritam who also likes to test various singers. Abhijeet is a bitter man who likes the Adesh Srivastav era where the same 5 singers sing all the major hits of the year. It's giving major boomer bitter about the new world energy. Keep up or lose out.
