The second entry in a series of Elder Scrolls game showcases, I will be doing them in order of release and the non-numbered releases will be included as full entries as well.

I make fun of this fact in Episode 1 of this series, but this is the legit opening I use, although I will always reference Shoddycast here, as they are the inspiration for me going over these.

Read the description, the third game released wasn't Morrowind, it was Battlespire, then Redguard, and only then Morrowind.

By the way, he is under stating the size of Daggerfall. Skyrim is 15 square miles while Daggerfall is 64,394 square miles. You can fit thousands of Skyrim in Daggerfall. I think it's somewhere around 4,000.

Daggerfall was the entire size of England and is still in the top ten biggest video game maps.

Morrowind is better. I can say that after completing Arena and Daggerfall. Two of the most buggiest games I have ever played. The dungeons are awful in Daggerfall but it's overall an okay game. Arena is just a terrible video game.
Play Daggerfall Unity, fixes everything.

@@MoonlightAcid1 I know right! I literally just found his channel (by this video) today and I'm so bummed he dropped this series. I saw this video was 7 years old and thought the series would probably be done by now. I really hope he finds the inspiration to continue as this video is a phenomenal analysis of the game.
I got really excited to watch a series on all of TES when I found this, but I'm sad to find out you only did the first two... :(
This guide alone helped me get through the starting dungeon no problem (before I would get to the first skeleton and just get slaughtered) and has made me enjoy this game like crazy. Thank you so much for making this video, i'm really forever gratefull.
Once when battling that skeleton on the stairs I got stuck and couldn't see it while it beat me to death, those bugs...
This video was so well constructed that I instantly liked and subscribed. This guy is the perfect balance of charismatic and nerdy making his approach very easy to absorb. And I also appreciate the suit, an added aura of professionalism.
With the current tech, Bethesda should at least try to make populated cities, not that puny villages like Whiterun or Solitude. I was amazed by Oblivion cities. I actually got lost in Skingrad and loved the Imperial City. And here we are, 200 years after Oblivion Crisis, we enter Solitude and... it's basically a single street and 3 courtyards. That's the "amazing" capital of Skyrim. And guess what? It's made in a place that basically prevents it from expanding. Nice move, Bethesda.
I feel like they've wasted the potential of Skyrim cities. Whiterun is the trade center yet there's a single general goods trader & a few stalls with vegetables. Riften is a home of thieves but there's barely anything to steal from there.Windhelm feels like a fort with an inn, not the former capital of Skyrim. Some great ideas for cities (Markarth, Solitude, Riften) were wasted in favour of going the easy way. I actually like the smaller towns better. Falkreath and Dawnstar are good.
They couldn't do it bc they are lazy and barely improved their engine beyond what oblivion delivered. Don't expect this kind of magic from this company ever again. They are too mainstream now. Expect shit tier games like FO4 to be the norm.
+Michael Aries ESO really did a lot better with the cities as much as that hurts lore nerds to hear. Expansive almost to a fault.
+An Ordinator I was gonna say the same- ever try to find your way around Vivec? the place has it's own transportation system for cryin out loud! Mournhold was big, but more of a pain to navigate.
The M rating means that the target audiance are not kids, meaning the developers are not obligated to ''dumb down'' the game cuz of them. offcours kids still play games with M ratings and such, you cant rly stop that.
Hey Zaric, i can't thank you enough for this series, as a Game Designer i am very interested in the Elder Scrolls lore and the beginnings of the franchise but as my time to fully appreciate these games is short i don't think i would ever get around to examine Arena and Daggerfall to the extent presented here, so again, thank you very much and i cant wait for the next episodes (really hope you have not given up on the series!) especially when you get to Morrowind! Cheers mate, great work!
Took me 2-3 hours to realise you're supposed to interact with the shelves to buy stuffs! I thought the shopkeepers hate me.
Also, from 1:13:42 onward, it sounds like the rambling of a madman. The lore is a mess.

Yeah this whole dragon breach thing, is an excuse to ignore stuff and make changes to lore and story cus alternate timelines....A bit lazy if you ask me, you can forget about anything you want and it doesn't matter. The only time I like alternate timelines is with reboots and different interpretations, like superheros. But here it gives license to be sloppy. They have just made the blades the canon ending and had it far less messy.
Its amazing what they were able to archive back in the days. That Game seems to be HUGE!

Whole game map is the size of England.
And it's very empty. One of the emptiest 3d worlds ever designed, right next to Arena. Groundbreaking at the time but now it's just broken ground.
I watch this video every time I want to start a new Daggerfall game! He tells you how to set it up perfectly (not only your character but the game itself as well)!

Daggerfall was a video game far ahead of its time back in the day, no one had ever seen anything quite like it when it first came out.
The fact that some 25 odd years later this game is still being talked about, played and modded as much as it is, proves that Bethesda had created something more than a video game. It had created something of a timeless masterpiece.

Well, that depends on how you play it. Just add a phobia or two and then add healing and decrease your Hitppints per level. You'll get a pretty fast level up. Personal best for it is a Bosmer. Female characters seem to also have some kind of bonus from going naked.
I can't imagine what you went through learning this for yourself when the game was originally released. I imagine you 100 hours in finally realising carts exist like "wtf have I been doing this whole time?"
(I know this is 4 years old, so sorry, but) At the time people would have read the game manual which explained all the mechanics. There'd still be stuff to figure out on your own, but a lot of these old games that are "hard to get into" would be much easier if people remembered their manuals. Easier to get understand, I mean. Some still super difficult to beat.

Recently Bethesda confirmed they aren't DEVELOPING Elderscrolls 6 ATM, but they are working on it... Sort of. Bethesda said that the things they want to do/add with Elderscrolls 6 would you make say 'That sounds impossible...' which even Bethesda has said that the things they want to do with ES:VI would be too much for modern technology to handle. Just give that some thought. What if they're trying to do something similar to Daggerfall, and have a MASSIVE map made up of multiple kingdoms and within those kingdoms around 10-30 cities/villages? And have all those places (besides the main quest) randomly generate themselves? It sounds IMPOSSIBLE, but perhaps this is what Bethesda wants to come back to?

madcow BRO Well they wouldn't have everything randomly generated since that was the majour flaw of past tes games, especially daggerfall and arena, so going back to that would frankly be very idiotic (since it would be a pure downgrade from skyrim's map, which some people think is the largest one in tes do to the sheer amount of detail in it). Though I can't argue with the fact that it does come off as though they want to make another attempt at an elder scrolls game that includes more than 1 province, possibly all of them, perhaps to make up for eso, but with the level of detail as skyrim's map, but it could also very easily mean a slew of other things. We'll have to know for certain, and the next tes game made by Bethesda just might be the one with the longest development time (especially if they do decide on a grotesquely large map with plenty of detail)
i totally agree bro.. random generated maps and dungeouns are really shitty.. but yeah what they said sounds like the next tes will be either huge or is just bigger than skyrim but with beautiful graphics and tons of huge citys with lots of npcs.. the problem about skyrim is the weak papyrus that bloats really fast and npcs ai is also scripted.. i can mod a great skyrim but it is sadly never ever stable.. the special edition is certainly much smoother, less crashy and made a huge jump in fps and once skse is out for the sse i am really curious how the game runs modded to the limits.. enb is sadly also not that feature rich at this point but i certainly wanna see what the sse can be once the mods are where they are for the original now.. anyway what todd howard said about the elder scrolls 6 makes one really hopeful..
Not to burst your bubble, but I'm pretty sure Bethesda were referring to technology such as VR which they've been looking into. Not so much of a "game scope" impossibility as a literal physical technology impossibility.

This video brings back memories. The one feature I remember liking is that the guild quests weren't predetermined and you could pass on them to the point where if you were inclined you could become an arch-mage by just defending the guild hall from vagrants that attack at night and not bother with the mazes that a lot of the dungeons become.
For those who the game runs so slow that the screen only refresh when you move the mouse, go to Daferfall's installation folder and open the DosBox.conf (I used notepad).
Then look for the variable "cycles" under the CPU section. By default it is set by a number (in my case 5000, I don't remember so well) so change it to "max" without the quotes. There are many other customization's but at least that's the one was causing slow frame rate for me.
Think you'll find the time to actually do a "before skyrim" on, say, Morrowind or Redguard?

That is why I quit the first time I tried it out. I'm determined to get through the game this time around.
House Dagoth Yeah that's my experience. I tried it again not too long ago (about a year ago, I've had the game since it first came out) and again the dungeons (the first big one privateer's hold I think) I just can't get through it. After a while the map becomes such a ball of hair that I can't figure out where I've been and where not. And even if I do I can't figure out how to get there before I loose track of it all together.

Zaric Zhakaron Oh wait, yeah 'privateers hold' is easy that's the one you start the game in. I'm thinking of something else. I'm not sure whether I got this following the main quest or as a side quest from the Mages guild. But I've started playing this game about 6 times over the past 20? years (well since it's release) and every time I pretty soon end up in some gigantic dungeon of which the map makes no sense. Maybe I will follow your guide and try one more time, but then I feel what's the use of playing an RPG if you're going to follow a recipe? Anyway your 'dungeon crawl' spell suggestions might be useful. Thanks!
Just get the Ancestral Ghost version. It is full of patches and semi-mods, and you don't need DOSBox.

I think I did over 200 mage quests and I could not get past rank 2. Daggerfall was great but man was it random.

Daggerfall is really hard to play,but when you understand this game and start explore the world, I never forget when i first time see the size of the map.
This really makes me wish triple-A studio CRPGs weren't being so dumbed down. Daggerfall's systems are so deep and complex compared to Skyrim it's a joke.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I wanted do much to play daggerfall, because i love old school games. I had seen your last tutorial for installing the game, but I stopped playing because there was many bugs. But now i can experience a good old scholl, intelectual, hard and serious game. This game is so huge and fantastic. In the last few days i have had more love for these older games than for skyrim itself.
I fell upon your video by accident and glad I did. A comprehensive guide on Daggerfall plus I loved all the tips and tidbits of game lore and history. I mainly played Morrowind and Oblivion. I didn't get that much into Skyrim or ElderScrolls Online. Daggerfall seems worth checking out now that I have seen your video. Through your link to the website, I found a free Steam copy. I'll be following your video guide when I get started.
