The Southern Theater Command of the People's Liberation Army said in a statement that the "US move seriously infringed on China's sovereignty and security." China's navy is trying to become the world's #1 navy. However, they will never achieve that status due to their lack of logistics and not being able to operate in blue waters (open ocean). All of their "targets" (surface ships) are primarily good for is coastal defense.

A nations' warships do have the right of "free and innocent passage" through another nations' territorial waters. Presumably EEZ as well.
Any foreign vessels, warships included, can pass an EEZ of another country without giving notice to the owner of the EEZ but with several restrictions.
I tend to sense a bias in the reporting from the Hindustan Times which is reinforced by the comments of those following its channel. The expressions used by its journalists and editors does tend to undermine any semblance of balanced or truthful reporting, which is a great pity as India used to have a reputation of "fair play" which you would expect from a cricketing nation!
