Next time a US ship rams a Chinese one, we’ll have this evidence to show why China has been testing the waters and that we did everything in our power to avoid confrontation, and all the countries in the middle ground who don’t know if “West” or “East” is to blame, will side with the country defending their trade routes and not threatening them.

Civilian traffic has rights of "innocent passage" to sail there but not foreign military traffic without permission. It is NOT international waters and the UNCLOS has never rejected China's claims. In fact, it is the opposite.
The West is mischievous in perpetuating this myth with the sham 2016 PCA ruling. The PCA which is not even a UN body had exceeded its authority in its arbitrary 2016 ruling and is in contravention of "**The Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties**" which states that a **later ruling** **cannot override** or extinguish the rights of a member state's claims in an **earlier treaty**.
UNCLOS explicitly recognizes the continuing validity of China’s historical claims, that go back many centuries and are well recorded both in Chinese and non-Chinese documents (eg. Vietnam's 1958 agreement). China has consistently exercised sovereignty over the islands and reefs as well as the surrounding waters in the South China Sea. Therefore China has prior and rightful claims in the SCS.
