Love it. Maybe some to consider is the very first contact in TNG where they say if they resist they will be punished. Kinda unique. And maybe the First Contact when they’re listening to the federation engage the Borg. That one sounds kinda unique too with the crisp audio and kinda echo and music.

      Enter Soviet and Japanese Forces.
Soviets had "barrier troops" with machineguns and mortars to prevent the bolt-action equipped Infantry and Scouts from retreating or deserting.
Japan had so thoroughly indoctrinated their Soldiers from birth, that Bushido Code was sown into their very being and consciousness. They would rather hug a grenade or jump from a cliff, than dishonor: themselves, their Families and the Emperor.
The only way for them their Spirit to "climb Mount Suribachi" so that their Kami can join the God Emperors.

Their structure came from a collective consciousness functioning as a single being. They could have done so much more and far cooler things with them than what they did.

Even with the queen, the thought of giving up your individuality to her collective is still terrifying. The only reason the borg were so much more terrifying at the beginning was they were an extremely powerful unknown. The thing with unknowns is, once we start studying and understanding them they typically turn out to be at least a little less scary. Also we have seen that even with the destruction of the queens body she still "lives" as she is not a physical being but a living machine/program in a sense, and uses another similar looking female drone as her avatar.

The writers behind TBOBW really understood the characterization of the Borg. Did you notice, in the original context, the phrase "Resistance is futile," was in response to Picard's statement "I will resist with you with my last strength." "Strength is irrelevant, resistance is futile." But in First Contact and Voyager, their dialogue with Picard is rewritten slightly and becomes their cliche catchphrase every time they show up...

The Borg in the original TNG conception were totally chilling. It was great that they were used so sparingly in that series - they're the kind of villain that shouldn't show up unless the writers really have something good up their sleeves.
Voyager gets a lot of flak for watering them down, which I tend to agree with. Can't say I was really a fan of Species 8472 as a creative contribution to the lore - I was much more of a fan of the Vidiians, which were much more complex and had a unique potential for visceral horror in Trek. But as far as the Borg go, I do love that one scene where the liberated Borg heal Chakotay, with their voices gradually merging into that of the Collective. It was actually really, really creepy, and it would have been even better if they had taken that into a much darker direction.

Exactly. The drones stopped looking disinterested and aloof and started to look intentionally threatening. They were bland with few colours, unlike the later primarily green--but also blue colour scheme. Their ship was also just a large cube of metal shit stuck together with no apparent rhyme or reason, yet it was highly threatening. However, in doing so, it lost the subtlety. Also, the introduction of the Queen and hierarchy created it's own problem. The notion that they see us as "archaic authority driven" cultures is a far more terrifying thing. They would have no leader. There was no one of them you could talk with. All you could do was destroy them.

Credit where credit is due for the First Contact voice for making the Borg sound more robotic,
But hands down I think the Best version of the Borg voice goes to their 2nd appearance in "Best of both Worlds" where they sound more like millions of voices speaking as one, feels like there is way more menace in their voice.
Their first voice in QWho is ok, just felt like it could do with abit more work to bring its potential out and I think they did that with the 2nd voice!
Actually voyager's is pretty close, it has a nice echo effect on it, feels like a close 2nd they settled on hence forth. It's still pretty good , more laid back like an ancient God that knows how Powerful it is so it doesn't need to put emphasis on its words, just makes statement of what it's gonna do to you.

Introducing a queen was off-putting enough, but then in Voyager it's reduced all the way down to where a drone would have to acknowledge an "order" from "the collective" by saying out loud "we understand"? I mean... what? So being part of a collective consciousness just means you have a voice in your head giving you orders, and you feel really compelled to obey that voice?
