it's the little touches that make this so good. i never would of thought to have freeman sprint through the corridors like that. you have a good eye for details and how to flesh out Gordon as a character.

That hits me to my core... thank you...
Funny enough, I thought that animation of him running was really jankey, and kinda detracted from the experience. I never considered the idea of Gordon doing a pre-workout-esque routine as that impactful until you mentioned it. Your comment helps me realize how import brainstorming is, and I will definitely return to this episode for examples on how to flesh out the little details.
Do you think I should remaster this episode, keeping it mostly the same, with a few small 3rd person scenes with the RedMenace Gordon model?

If you want an example of my "pure" animation, check out the chair and facial movement in my "Navy Seal Copy Pasta" and "Barney's Security Review". "The suit looks great; a bit snug in the back though, buddy." --a security guard who has spent a non-zero amount of time looking at Gordon's butt.
It's okay, that's not a bad thing. The reaction is perfect, though. As someone who also has an ass I can verify that the western fashion industry doesn't know how to account for that and I'm sure the designer of hazard armor would be no exception.
I wish I knew if this was in the original Half-Life or was a little bit of flavor added by the Crowbar Collective for giggles. I'm not an FPS kind of person, so I've only watched someone else play the game and this is my first encounter with this line, otherwise I'd just go find out for myself (i know, it was available for free a few days ago as of posting this comment, but i missed that sale and also i have like one dollar to my name -cough-). If it's the latter that's like 80% of the basis of Gordon's character in Gorgeous Freeman and that's a hilarious coincidence.

Crowbar Collective heavily modified the source engine for their maps, so outdoor maps like the dam, the trash compactor and almost all of the Xen maps cannot be opened in SFM, even if they can be opened in Hammer because they increased the brush count, among other things that are too technical for me to understand.

Ahh I see you subscribe to the opinion of Gordon wearing a helmet!
When I first started playing Half Life back in about 2007/2008 when I was about 9-10 years old (how time flies), I always went by the box art opinion that he didn’t have one.
But in the 10 years since, I’ve grown up (in my early 20s now) and matured enough to get logic where it should exist, and I don’t know what to think.
It makes sense for him to wear a helmet, for the HUD to be visible to him, for the suit voice to be able to tell him if he’s injured, burned, radiation’s high etc, and I assume that Xen is similar enough to outer space, therefore airless, so he would need one to breathe, unless things are different because it’s a border-world between dimensions and there’s air here for all the creatures to breathe and you know…LIVE.
But then there’s the lines with the scientist after you put on the suit in the locker room, and he mentions they scraped the suit’s breathing device, which if it existed should be built into the helmet you’d think, so he…doesn’t have one?
Ahhhh questions I’ve pondered for years and years! 😫😂

    • @Validatormaybelater
      @Validatormaybelater  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Unfortunately, you guess wrong my friend xD
I am of the opinion he does NOT wear a helmet. Which, crazy enough, is the less realistic option. Because even if he was extremely lucky (as most people say he is) he is still in MANY firefights, countless combat encounters, and fairly extreme hazards. He simply cannot survive without one.
My counter to the helmet theory is this:
If the HEV had a helmet, it would be reasonable to assume it does its job well, at least at preventing or lessening blunt trauma.
If Gordon had a helmet, he could not get knocked out in Apprehension.
My second counter: Xenian species survive both in Xen and on Earth without any additional help. Which means, to me, that Xen is breathable (still likely dangerous of course, who knows what kind of pathogens are present). If you consider Blue Shift and Opposing Force to be canon (I hate that word sometimes) then it supports the "breathable Xen" theory even more, given that neither Barney or Adrian wear self-contained breathing apparatus. The Survey team likely wear helmets because they simply offer more protection, and allow easier access to HUD information that make combat easier. They are scientists after all... I imagine most of them aren't highly trained.
My third counterpoint: Gordon either is completely mute, or very quite. Most fans can agree on this. I subscribe to the "selective mutism" theory, which is solidified due to the traumatic events of the cascade.
To communicate, I imagine Gordon has gotten quite good at using body language, especially because not everyone knows sign language. In order to best communicate without speaking, he'd need to gesticulate a lot, as well as make use of his facial expressions to their fullest.
I personally believe Gordon simply does not wear a helmet before the cascade because he needs to be able to communicate. The helmet probably conceals his facial expressions. I imagine Gordon goes looking for it after (maybe he left it in his locker?) but cannot find it.
So, the only conclusion I could come to was that the HEV can somehow protect the head, even if the user does not wear a helmet. I figure that its better to make Gordon's combat and hazard encounters realistic, and his suit unrealistic, than it is to make his suit realistic, but Gordon unreasonably lucky and also unlucky.
What i've decided for this series, for the sake of balancing Gordon's level of protection vs the encounters he has, is to give his suit a similar function to the Mjonnir armor from Halo. In other words, it uses and energy shield. The difference i've decided to draw was that this shield can cover Gordon's head even without a helmet.
This gives Gordon a reasonable achilleas heel, and motivates him to keep his suits power supply topped up. If power is ever lost (and I will likely have that happen a few times) then the majority of his body is still protected, but not his head. It would add a reasonable amount of drama to certain scenes, without making his survival improbable to the viewer.
It also provides a semi-realistic way to protect him from radiation...
Radiation is a tough subject. It takes almost a meter (if I recall correctly) of lead to adequately render most types of harmful radiation safe. The HEV would need to be made of some kind of extremely fictional material to protect him enough. However, if you throw an energy shield into the mix (however fictional) it tends to solve that problem, along with many of the other problems Gordon would come across.
TLDR: Me and my friends have thought way too much about this, and decided on a compromise that allows Gordon enough protection, while not making Gordon's enemies have stormtrooper aim and terrible luck.
Its very likely that Gordon canonically wears one, perhaps Valve will reveal that in the future. However, for the sake of a balanced realism vs cinematics, we've decided to buff Gordon's protection a bit.

    • @Validatormaybelater
      @Validatormaybelater  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think I used to be a little naive about it back when I made this... but I figured it was a combination of several things:
      1. I'm fairly sure the HEV according to Hazard Course is designed with a little stealth in mind.
      2. Whens the last time you noticed your own footsteps, especially when walking normally? I mean, the answer to that question for me is if i'm walking on a tile floor with hard boots so I suppose i'm wrong there xD but still
      3. I found when I used the footstep noises from in game, they may not have fit the specific situation and could be distracting if done wrong.
      4. I think the footstep noises are gone when you walk below a certain speed in game, by default you're practically jogging and I use console commands to slow him down.
      5. I COULD edit in my own footstep noises, maybe even quieter ones, but its extremely tedious to do by hand, especially to match a given situation. There's a lot of variation in real life footstep noises and I know I would have gone overboard getting it just right.
Thanks for noticing! Not sure if many other people have pointed it out from what I can remember...
