- Can you beat Half Life 2 with simulated Dark Souls 1 movement and mechanics? Well...no, not really - But here's a play-by-play of my convoluted, nonsensical attempt to do so anyway.

I love how ladders are proven to be more of a obstacle then other enemies in Half-Life Soul Garry's Mod
Proves Zero Punctuation and every other person who complained about the ladders right.
Much like actual Dark Souls, ladders are misery personified.

fun fact! the dropship at 16:39 is always like that even in hl2 if you dont have the airboat, less of a gmod bug and more of the devs rushing hl2s development.

Funny enough the shotgun knight is actually a reference to Infernoplus' Dark Souls mod which adds the weapons from Halo. The creator made a pretty fun TH-cam video that includes some of the work arounds necessary to get them to work.
So really, this wasn’t just Half-Life 2, Garry’s Mod, and Dark Souls mashed into one. There was also a bit of Halo in this concoction of games.

There is an addon called Total Replacer that add option to replace Half Life 2 enemies and weapons. You clould replace all of it with Dark Souls stuff.
A soulslike with Half Life 2 style level design is something I've always dreamed of. this honestly feels like something i'd picture from my imagination, and I genuinely hope more games explore this mix. when the gameplay works in it's moments, it works.
If you want a linear Souls game then just play Dark Souls 3.
A souls-like with Sci-Fi Dystopian/Cyberpunk theme is actually an interest idea.

The invisible wall right after exiting the tunnel from Ravenholm could be an invisible brush that blocks AI from moving through it? Only thing I can come up with.

This is the sort of conclusion I came to as well in retrospect. Truthfully a lot of logical explanations for the jankiness dawned on me well into the final hours of the video, but I was so near completion I didn't end up adding many addendum explanations.
@@GrandmasterPant Plus vanilla campaign maps work strangely in gmod and sometimes require fixes.
@GrandmasterPant I feel it could probably be the func_portals and skip Brushes that are used in hammer to Optimize the map. Maybe The Npc could be Blocked by these brushes

As a suggestion on what you could also play: the Dark Souls Prepare to Die edition mod by Inferno Plus, that adds a ton of very well made and functioning Halo 3 weapons and mechanics.
I think that would perfectly contrast this video, to make a Halo 3 Dark Souls 1 run.

I'm aware of it, I really should go give them a run through some time. I suspect Shadow of the Erdtree will keep me busy for a time though.

@@lollol5263 yeah probobly then again i do make maps in source, btw what made me think to make that comment was the mines and random walls but maybe im just wrong, idk.
I'd also be willing to bet that some areas have regular player clips in spots that are removed once certain sequences play out. Like when they don't want you to get ahead of Alyx because the rubble is supposed to come down and separate you from her.
I imagine they'd clip less if they were actually players and not NPCs

I just finished watching this, and let me say, this was an absolute pleasure to watch. I love Dark Souls and Half-Life, and seeing it brought together like this was fun and goofy yet jank in the most positive way possible. I also love all the memes and references and stuff. It made me feel like we had the same tastes and interests, and I felt very welcome watching. You did a great explaining your process and things you've done, be it oversight or reflection. Really made me feel like I wasn't missing out on anything. I really, really enjoyed this. I know it's probably a lot of work putting out a video of this scale, but I'd totally watch another of these. Videos like this feel very comfy and cozy and, of course, entertaining. I don't know if anyone else would get what I mean, but regardless, incredible video! Great job on it! The editing, which doesn't get overwhelming neither stale. A perfect balance.
And all of its other creative aspects are fantastic as well.
It reminds me of simpler times where I'd play through HL2 using all kinds of mods over and over again.
As well as playing Synergy HL2 co-op with like ~10 randoms and all the fun and chaos that ensued, similar to what's happening in the video in some way.
It's also funny how you don't know any of the loading screen points (skill issue smh) but for me they're burned into my memory from the hundred of playthroughs of the campaign i've done lol.

Following through on such a challenge was a feat on it's own, even if you didn't have to deal with the trials and tribulations of the source engine. But damn it, it made a great video, stairs and all. Long-form content that's clearly had work put into it is always refreshing, and the bits of animation were a great bonus. Well done.

The invisible barriers are brushes used to stop npcs from moving across them (eg to stop them from blowing themselves up on mines) and as you are an npc you can’t cross em. Great video tho! Loved watching it!

I believe the invisible walls are intended to prevent enemies from getting aggro before you get close, but since the game thinks you're still at the start, they never go away

From what I can tell, several of the triggers had collision with the dark souls bots for some reason, making all the random invisible walls. Also, the issue with constantly getting stuck on corpses could've been simply solved by disabling keep corpses in the context menu.
This is too awsome!!! You need to perfect implementing Dark Souls x Gary’s Mod into other games where it is even more out of place.
