Funny enough the shotgun knight is actually a reference to Infernoplus' Dark Souls mod which adds the weapons from Halo. The creator made a pretty fun TH-cam video that includes some of the work arounds necessary to get them to work.
There is an addon called Total Replacer that add option to replace Half Life 2 enemies and weapons. You clould replace all of it with Dark Souls stuff.
The invisible wall right after exiting the tunnel from Ravenholm could be an invisible brush that blocks AI from moving through it? Only thing I can come up with. EDIT: oh there are more
This is the sort of conclusion I came to as well in retrospect. Truthfully a lot of logical explanations for the jankiness dawned on me well into the final hours of the video, but I was so near completion I didn't end up adding many addendum explanations.
@GrandmasterPant I feel it could probably be the func_portals and skip Brushes that are used in hammer to Optimize the map. Maybe The Npc could be Blocked by these brushes
A soulslike with Half Life 2 style level design is something I've always dreamed of. this honestly feels like something i'd picture from my imagination, and I genuinely hope more games explore this mix. when the gameplay works in it's moments, it works.

I just finished watching this, and let me say, this was an absolute pleasure to watch. I love Dark Souls and Half-Life, and seeing it brought together like this was fun and goofy yet jank in the most positive way possible. I also love all the memes and references and stuff. the invisible walls are usually NPC_clip brushes placed there to keep certain npcs in or out. With the "players" technically being npcs you possess, it would make sence for them to collide with it.

Following through on such a challenge was a feat on it's own, even if you didn't have to deal with the trials and tribulations of the source engine. I think i know what the invisible walls are for Take the tripmine in Nova Prospekt it's something you wouldn't want NPCs to trigger, so the developers put a collision box that wouldn't affect the players There's an invisible wall near the sniper section (i think that was it) where the stair placing was necessary because the devs wanted the combines to stay at the warehouse and not wander out after Gordon if the player runs away

This video is so good, it's unbelievable. The topic (I'm biased) The editing, which doesn't get overwhelming neither stale. A perfect balance. And all of its other creative aspects are fantastic as well. It reminds me of simpler times where I'd play through HL2 using all kinds of mods over and over again. As well as playing Synergy HL2 co-op with like ~10 randoms and all the fun and chaos that ensued, similar to what's happening in the video in some way. It's also funny how you don't know any of the loading screen points (skill issue smh) but for me they're burned into my memory from the hundred of playthroughs of the campaign i've done lol. Thank you for this video and I hope you make more!

The invisible barriers are brushes used to stop npcs from moving across them (eg to stop them from blowing themselves up on mines) and as you are an npc you can’t cross em. Great video tho! Loved watching it!

The game's npc clip prevents npcs from accessing certain areas and registers players as npcs when they possess it. The game crashes when hitting a loading screen because the game tries to load a map and it loads a map with saving things, removing it and putting it back and it crashes the game. Hopefully, you will see this comment. Oh yeah you can go through player clip so in this 39:12 you can walk past this wall only if your a npc which player clip doesn't matter only npc clip
just a heads up, the nextbots version of these with the setting where youll teleport to the bot when you leave it tends to work better for story sequences
Knowing a bit more about nextbots now, if I end up doing something like this again in the future, I'll be trying to address some of the noteworthy issues like what you mentioned to make things smoother
