Thank you for this very informative video! I sprained my ankle severely 3 days ago while playing tennis and have since read/watched a lot of information and videos on sprains. Yours is the best, with up to date medical info and very practical advice on all stages covering getting back to sports.
I twisted my outer left ankle a few times in the past, last time was in 2020. I started walking again and on the 10 th day my ankle starts bothering me again. Its a 2 hour walk i do. The swelling comes and goes periodically. Never had it checked out as im not one to go to doctors but this time i think i need to see whats going on. Its hard to push down on my heel so i'm limping and my ankle feels week. I know the cold and wetness in the air irritates it a bit more. I just dont know how long it will last this time. Should i lay off the walking for a bit or continue to keep trekkiing? Tonight i did 4 hours but used my dads cane and its still painful but once i rest it overnight i can manage another walk tomorrow .Id like to get an ankle brace with the rods i think that would help. Enjoyed your informative video. Thank you
If you've only recently started walking again for exercise, the problem may be that you're doing too much. Our bodies require time to adjust and strengthen to new exercise and it may be that you will actually do better if you do shorted walks and/or have a recovery day between the walks.
@@SportsInjuryPhysiothank you for your reply. I think your right. I did take a couple days break, used an ice pack for the bit of swelling, then some heat. The weather has been so nice lately that I took my bike out as well and mixed it up. That went on for 4 1/2 hours. So yes I'm taking a couple days break again. I was walking at a good pace that first week so I probably over exerted it. Been on the hunt for some new walking shoes. Had a look at the New Balance x more v4s with the fresh foam. Very comfortable and am contemplating buying them. Thank you again for your advice.
I see people using athletic tape does that work better than a brace? Also when should I use athletic tape vs a brace? I have a grade one ankle sprain the least server out of the three types of sprains.
Tape does not provide stability - it might help a bit with pain. If you're not planning to move on uneven ground or do sharp turns when running, then tape can be enough but if you actually need stability then a brace is best.
I have a significant tear in my medial ankle ligament plus a partial tear in my atfl ligament with no broken bones (following MRI scan). I’ve been told to rest for 3 weeks & then should be fine walking with a tubular elastic bandage. I’m terrified I’ll damage it again. Would you recommend a specific brace for this type of injury? Thanks in advance!
I would go for a high stability brace like one of these: ✅ Aircast - geni.us/KANfk2 ✅ DonJoy - geni.us/Vo5f0sv ✅ McDavid - geni.us/zRAN ✅ Zamst - geni.us/PpKW5U3
My husband has CMT disease, and is still very active working out, and doing projects around the house. His ankles have been bothering him lately. He worries that the muscle wasting that has affected his feet and calves are also weakening his ankles. What ankle brace would you recommend for him? He wears an AFO brace on both legs that wraps around his calves, directly above his ankles.
It is best that he sees someone in person to get a recommendation as you can't usually combine ankle braces with AFO's - it may be that he needs adjustment to the AFOs instead.
I think I had 2 sprains on my lateral ligaments. Paramedic iced it itnially and it dulled the pain, plus the shock had be believing it wasn't so bad. Boy did I wake up in a ton of pain. Took some Tylenol and then never took en again, nor did I ice after the initial icing went to the er and they gave me this nice wide ace bandage with velcro. I redid it myself and have been playing with it since . Day 2 I loaded a little weight and regret it on day 3. Later in in 3 day 3 started to lightly move it, day 4 a bit more movement and a little more movement day 5 even more movement and loading significant weight day 6 (today) with my brace. Finally decided to adjust the wrap to have less compression on my foot and a moderate to light support on my ankle. Feels great to move around can really tell it's healing
Thank you for these videos. Really great guidance. I’m 3 weeks post a bad grade 2 at least sprain. Thankfully bruising and swell8mg gone. Still some pain, not too bad tho. Rehab going well and the exercises on your other video are helpful. My question please is about a brace best suited to play tennis. I’m a recreational player and would in the past wear an Aircast A60 brace as I’ve previously (many many years ago sprained my ankles). I’m not so sure with this new injury that that brace is going to be sufficient. Could you please give me your insights? Many thanks.

Its been an year since I sprain my right ankle. For around 3 weeks I wasn't able to walk. It was swollen pretty bad. After that period I started walking and slowly and gradually I went to running. In high pace sprints, I felt pain in it but I was walking properly. Now its perfectly fine and I'm able to play sports like football and do excercise in gym. The problem is, its still swollen a little but I don't feel any pain. I need your advice for curing its swelling. I feel like I haven't rested it properly back then because of that it wasn't recovered
Hello, I sprained my ankle last Friday and today is exactly one week of me spraining it. My sprain wasn’t bad and wasn’t really swollen/bruised. It would only hurt when I put it into a certain position. Due to school I keep walking on the ankle and think that is why it’s not healing. Should I get a brace?
A brace can help - also wearing good supportive shoes (like running shoes) may help. But you also need to try and perhaps not walk unnecessarily so it can get some relative rest e.g. do the walking you absolutely have to do at school but then sit and rest it when you don't have to walk or stand.
Hi there, We cannot provide individual treatment advice without doing an in-depth assessment of your injury and your personal circumstances, as the advice might not be appropriate for you. I just wish there were places where one could try one on. I really need some for hiking, because it happens to me every other trip and then I suffer to get back to the camp. But they are expansive to just order online and hope for the best. I could waste a lot of money before getting the correct one.
It's a bit difficult to answer your question because you've not given enough details. Which tendon actually tore? If it is the one that attaches inside the joint, it often goes hand in hand with a labral tear (called a SLAP lesion) and these can, if not severe, be treated conservatively but if severe needs surgery. It also depends on your work and sports and how active you are whether they repair or not. I remember treating a power lifter once who had to really argue and fight to get his distal tendon repaired because he could obviously not continue his career without it and the NHS did not seem to understand that. They also discharged him saying that he was fully rehabbed once he could carry light shopping bag to car 🙈. So it might be useful to get a second opinion from a different consultant and better guidance as to what your next steps should be treatment wise. We have this video about SLAP lesions but not sure if it applies to your case: th-cam.com/video/hiqywseDdhA/w-d-xo.html
I had talus bone undisplaced fracture last wk .my doctor advised rest , ankle brace,no wt bearing , how should i keep my foot planter flexed or dorsiflexed ,and can i put my heel on surface and wiggle my toes?
I sprained my ankle severely on lateral side while playing basketball 3days back there is bruising and diffuse swelling and not able to keep weight on that foot should i get a brace?
You should perhaps first make sure that you've not broken anything - this video can help you identify that but it's usually best to get it checked by a doctor: th-cam.com/video/MK6Cw2emem4/w-d-xo.html
I am 3weeks away from the day I sprained my ankle. I limits my movement. But when I starts walking again, I started got this cramped at the back of my leg. Should I move more or less?
I can't know the answer to your question without actually assessing your and understanding why you get the cramp. A physiotherapist will be able to check it for you and provide tailored advice on what exercises and how much walking etc. is best for your case. If you want help with your rehab and an exercise plan, this is something that our team of physios can assess and help you with via video call. So I just bought zenith lace ankle brace. Is it supposed to be very tight that it's pretty hard to put on my foot, or should it slide in very easily? Mine is pretty hard to put in. My feet is US8 and I bought size M, which the size chart said it should fit 7.5-10. I've never wear one of these before so I'm alarmed by the thightness and I feel I should have bought the L size instead
@@SportsInjuryPhysio my foot is now less swollen, so it's not as tight as before, but it's still pretty hard for my toes to get into the bottom hole (the missing toe box part). I guess my foot is wider than normal? I don't have any problem when wearing my shoes so it feels pretty weird 😅
I was walking and twisted my ankle almost 4 weeks ago. It was badly bruised and swollen. X rays showed no fracture. The swelling has gone down but if I'm up to long it comes back. The bruising was from my toes to my ankle. Most bruising is yellow now except for my toes, it's still bluish yellow. I have a boot and have been trying to use it, but it feels like a hot needle is being poked through my arch and my toes. I have been using crutches and have been a little weight bearing with them with minimal pain. Would a brace be more effective than the boot?
It sounds as if you may require some arch support - I would get it assessed by a physio because you really need to understand what is causing the hot needle sensation to understand what is the correct option.
