- In this video, Maryke explains why you need to transition gradually from walking non weight bearing to full weight bearing. She also shares tips on how you can overcome the fear of having to suddenly start trusting the injured limb again. It includes an exercise demo of various ways in which you can get yourself used to carrying full weight on your leg and not end up limping as you walk.

No one talks about the fear thank you for discussing this
Nasty tibia plateau fracture. Went to physical therapy today and I was terrified. I expressed my fears to the therapist. Best thing I did. My knee is pretty locked up but I trusted her enough to move my leg down. Now that I'm past the fear, I feel like I'll progress better. Great video.
Good luck with your recovery!
I also had a bad tibia plateau fracture. I have been NWB for 7 weeks. I go back to the surgeon in 3 more weeks and hopefully can walk out on both feet, so this video is tremendously helpful!
I had a TPF a year ago this week. I was NWB for 12 weeks. Now I am hiking with our dog.
I have the same injury as you I'm afraid to put weight back on it doctor say it's ok
extremely helpful talking about the fear!
Very good and cool explanation thank u ❤
Broke my ankle on 12.3.23. Almost 5 weeks out and currently on crutches with partial weight bearing. What a big learning it's been! Thank you for all of the detailed and clear explanations
I broke my right ankle on 12.5.23. I had to have surgery. I am not allowed weight-bearing yet. Hope your recovery goes well.
Sorry to hear about your injury! Little by little, we'll get there. Wishing us both a good recovery @@Happylifeme100
broke my right ankle (3 places) on 12-09-23, had surgery 6 days later. hopefully partial beginning monday
@@Happylifeme100 i broke my right tibia and fibula on 12/5/23 and had to have surgery too. i am partial weight bearing as of right now.
I’m a 65 year old female (very active)-My accident was 12/1/23, surgery on 12/8/23 - I had a cast for 2 weeks then I graduated to the boot (non weight bearing.) My next appointment is coming up on 1/29/23, i will have my X-ray and hopefully I can finally begin partial weight bearing. Talk about the depression that hit me at the beginning of this unwelcome time.
Thank you for this video. Best advice across TH-cam 🎉
You're welcome!

Sincerest thanks to you!
You're most welcome!
Your videos are amazing. I've unfortunately had bad care through an MCL tear, and should have been doing so much more. Your videos are already helping in just less than a day. Thank you
Glad I could help
This is so helpful. Thank you

Amazing! Thank you!!

5 weeks post op (ACL and Meniscus repair) still on partial weight bearing with 2 crutches. Starting this exercise now and will let you guys know the results after 2 weeks.
This is a phonomenal video! I had a knee replacement, which is supposed to be able to bear weight right away, but I was terrified to walk. Even at 6 months after surgery I still use a cane. I know a lot of it is fear in my mind of falling. I’ve looked and looked for videos to overcome the fear of walking after surgery, and this is one of the only ones I’ve found and it is incredible! Wonderful advice, delivered in a very clear and concise way. Thank you for putting this video together and helping people!
You're very welcome!
Thank you❤
Welcome!
Thank you so much for all your help. I had an ankle replacement at 65. My biggest problem was the fear of walking on it with or without the boot.Thank you for addressing that. Also, your ankle video part one was fantastic. Answered a lot of questions that I did not know about my ankle surgery and how the brain functions with Injuries. I am still dealing with the fear of walking on it but your video has definitely helped.
You're welcome, and good luck with your recovery!
I fractured my fibula and medial malleolus...1 week after surgery and it a cast. I'm soooo excited to start PT and start walking again. 🥳 I have a ways to go, but just want to say your videos are so helpful. Thank you!
You're welcome, and good luck with your recovery!
Found out i have hip and knee osteoarthritis partial weight bearing still using crutches and its frustrating this video came in handy
Great teaching
Thank you!
Mid January I fell and broke my acetabulum and pelvis. Doc put me back together again with plates and screws but I was zero weight bearing for 11 weeks. During that time, I found your video. I’ve watched several times and again tonight as I prepare for PT beginning next week. Thank you.
Good luck with your recovery!
Thanks for this. After 4 weeks of non weight bearing after a microfracture procedure on my knee, I started weight bearing today with my physio.
Im using crutches to start weight bearing. The sensations and feelings in my foot are weird and I have pain in my heel, side of my foot and my calf muscle is cramping. The knee itself does hurt too. My physio was excellent to get me moving but now I’m on my own I’m finding it so hard.
Got plenty of exercises to build my muscles up again
Best of luck!
Thank you!

2 months ago, I fell off a step stool, and injured my foot with a tendinitis diagnosis. In an air cast for 6 wks. No weight bearing, after 2 months, just now starting to do partial weight bearing. Your video has shown me how to lessen the fear that I have about walking again. THANK YOU SO MUCH
Eeee.ja😅l
Thanks for those tips don't try it as yet but I will be trying it
Good luck!
Thank you for this video!! I'm dreading starting the weight bearing process after having a broken foot, but the small exercises you demonstrated feel like something I can handle
Best of luck!
I had surgery on my left ankle 3 months ago and when I was in the boot I used an EVENup Shoe Balancer/Leveler this kept my body pretty centered.
How was your experience learning to use your foot again ? I’m currently 12 weeks non weight bearing they are going to approve me end of the month to weight bearing ,
Awesome, I met with an accident n my right leg ankle fractured already done surgery, I think like this video of urs is specially for me, thank you so much
You're welcome!
Thank you very much for your video! It is very helpful! Please, which schoes should I sure after the VACOped? Could you give me some examples??
Any running shoes with good support can work e.g. Hokas, or Asics etc. Just stay away from the super soft or squishy shoes (like some Nikes) or the memory foam ones because they won't provide enough support.
Thankyou

Week 3 now after a calcaneous osteotomy Left foot. Thanks for your video on walking with crutches and shadow walking. Im terrified to start weight bearing in another 3 weeks time. This video helped to ease my fears. Will definitely try your exercises when the time comes to do so😅😅
Thanks for watching, and good luck with your recovery!
I have the problem you mentioned where I'm not worried at all about bearing weight 🙈 I'm definitely limping and get frustrated sometimes...wondering when the stiffness will go away.
This is gonna help me because in 2 weeks I will be partial weight bearing after a tibia spiral fracture
How r u doing with your recovery ?
@@Gbabyyy713 i am fully healed, Back to sports and running with no issue
I graduated in 2005 as a medical biller and. So i dont have the books i need. Do u know where i can start ?
very helpful, thanks for sharing.
My ankle fracture is healed but having some issue with the soft tissue due to which I am having little pain.
And especially when I rest for longer hours or in the morning when I woke up, I find it really difficult to transfer the weight.
Gradually, with warm up, pain is very little but not negligible.
Glad it helped!

Thank you so much.. i ended up finding this video as my non injured knee has been in pain as i still do the weight bearing on my non injured knee. Its been 3 years for my pcl avulsion fractured and i underwent surgery that failed. i still couldnt bear weight on my injured knee i have started with practicing this and see a hope!! The explaination is amazing . O would like to get on a video call but i dont see a link of website could you please share!!

I have a trimalleor fracture. My dr. cleared me today for full weight bearing after 6 weeks. I had ORIF surgery and then a boot for a month. I was never casted. I start PT on Wednesday, although I had 6 sessions of at home PT that helped with stretching and balance.
Thanks for sharing!
Hi Maryke,
I twisted my ankle on November 16 while playing football. I thought it was a ligament sprain and rested wearing a bandage for 2-3 weeks gradually bearing weight . I was able to walk and do everything normally with slight pain in my ligaments after 4 weeks from injury but the swelling was still there so i took an x-ray where i got to know i had a hairline fracture in my lower 1/3rd of fibula. I wore a POP cast on Dec 12th and i removed it after 3 weeks , i was able to walk with little pain and discomfort . I took the x-ray again , found out that the fracture is not yet healed and the doctor asked me to wear the cast again for 3 weeks .
Last week (Jan 22nd) I removed the cast and the doctor said the fracture is healed but i was experiencing severe pain just to land my foot , he said its because of the stiffness due to immobilozation and it will reduce over a week .I did small exercises for the past one week but now also I am not able to bear weight. It's like the small improvement i feel while doing exercises one day is completely gone when i wake up the next day.
Can you please share your thoughts and recommendations?
I think this video may be useful to watch - it explains why it can be so tricky after long period in cast: th-cam.com/video/q7aMU9salbU/w-d-xo.html

I broke my ankle last August did surgery September and now im doing partial weight bearing.
For me I had a tibia spiral fracture on Valentine’s Day. And now I’m 7 weeks and my dr told me I can go full weight on it, but I get a shock on my feet when I try to walk and that scares me a lot. I don’t like that sensation too. I hope this exercise helps me
That's a good sign of your leg healing. 🥳
I tore a bunch of ligaments in July‘23 just had surgery in Feb 2 cast is now off now I have to practice walking with my walking boot until I’m upgraded to an ankle brace in April.
How u feeling now
Mam bigg salute to you ,i broke my ankle back ,my pop removed ,i tried so meny what's to walk but I didn't understand how to start, I'm scared to walk ,I just followed your vidio 1st attempt only i learned to walk properly Thank you so much for your knowledge, very useful vidio, lots of love❤❤❤❤
My pleasure 😊
What should I do if when I attempt to stand normally I feel pain on the backside of my calf ? I have normal range of motion in my leg and foot but can’t stand without discomfort and I’ve lost a good portion of strength to walk. 😢 I didn’t break anything , I had skin cancer surgery on my foot that caused intense swelling / pain that kept me off my foot for a couple weeks and now I’m trying to get back to normal with some difficulty. I didn’t expect it to affect me the way it did. I thought I would be able to bounce back once my excision site was healed enough.
3 weeks after ankle reconstruction surgery and very hesitantly I’ve started to put pressure on my foot literally just enough to feel both feet in the floor. It does not help that my husband is terrified of me injuring my ankle while on recovery,
I'm worried because I had reconstruction flat feet surgery repair, and doctors say I can start doing little weight back and someone exercises. So in 2 week put me physical therapy and going to need help
Trimalleolar break. 4 weeks post op and terrified to weight bear. Thank you
Keep it up
Age 55. Trimaleolar fracture dec 17, surgery and hardware installed dec 19, cast removed Jan 5 and staples (36) removed. Waited a week+ for sutures and staple holes to heel and started swim/pool work myself Jan 15. Consisting of a mix of water running, water polo drills, swimming (50m), building various exercises like calf/foot rolls, squats, walking in water starting at shoulder depth and progressing to waist depth after 10 sessions (on top of exercises in desk chair at work and home). 6 weeks post surgery was Jan 30 and official 6 week check up for x-rays and evaluation is Feb 2 for official go-ahead for weight bearing (I have started with air cast over a week ago and can walk well in the air cast but only do so with knee scooter close by getting to pool from car is on knee scooter down to bleacher, swim suit under sweat pants and swim parka, so just take off air cast and sweat pants on bleacher and crawl on my but the 10 feet to the deep end).
Feb 14 update, can walk easily with air cast going on 3 weeks, if it is icy will use a cane for stability. Can walk without air cast at home but only do so when doing physio. Plantar flexion is almost as good as the right ankle, dorsal flexion still working on, I feel this when lunging my right foot forward (I only do this in chest deep water at this point). Cannot turn my left foot in as far as my right yet. I can do breast stroke kick though with a bit of force, could keep up with freestylers doing my breaststroke for a set of 100s.
March 5 - 10 weeks following my trimaleolar fracture surgery. Since my last update I had been only using the Air Cast/walking cast at work. At home I had not been using it. This week I have been walking around with regular hiking boots. Walking is good. I can support weight and balance on the damaged left ankle (even raising my right leg), of course balance is not as good as the right unbroken ankle. The difference is most noticeable when doing lunges, specifically when I lunge with the right foot. Anyway, I have another month for my 3 month check-up so I will continue doing my workouts and hopefully the Dr will give me good news and allow some jogging. With my fracture my fibula was completely broken at an angle, on that I have multiple plates with 5 screws holding them in. On the tibia, most trimaleolar fractures I have seen on TH-cam have 1 or 2 long screws holding the tibial fracture, I had multiple so I have plates with 6 screws holding them, and the rear of my tibia was also fractured so I have another screw there holding the back.
@stephenmorris2726
Thank you for the updates. Same..Trimalleolar fractures on January 26, surgery was Feb 2nd. I've been in this cast , my heel and foot hurt on a 4 level, my ankle hurting more recently. Tomorrow March 11th, xray possible removal of cast and into a walking boot. I am scared to death. My toes have been tingling since this happened and had to move my toes. Worried we we start the walking boot I am going to make thing worse..
Good luck on your recovery.
@@madelynkelly5777 Good luck - a little longer in the surgery cast but different surgeons have different approaches. I know with mine the 2 weeks post surgery I had the swelling go down in my ankle and my calf had atrophied quite a bit so my cast was very loose - I probably could have slid out of it like a boot. The best piece of equipment I used was a knee scooter. In terms of therapy if you have a facility that offers water therapy try that. I went to the water very quickly but I am a swimmer/water polo/triathlete and I have a great deal of personal aquatic therapy experience from decades ago that is another story. In terms of the air cast - get the taller one. That will have more support. I did get a second ankle one, mainly for my bike on my bike trainer, but I found the ankle air cast was not as good as the taller one.
@@madelynkelly5777 Good luck on your recovery. In terms of the tingling, I also had tingling toes, ankle foot. That is normal with the swelling, as the swelling goes down it gets better. It seems that most of the videos I have seen with people that have this injury the dorsal flexión seems to be the hardest to get back. And that is needed to go down stairs, walk etc. My surgeon did say he had to remove damaged cartilage, which has been my biggest concern since I woke up after the surgery.
I broke my tibia 1 place and fibula 2 place. Due to my size crutches was like a hazard for myself. So I was in a wheelchair now I am using a walker w ankle brace. The break is still not fully healed & it been 7 months since injury. It’s only been a month and a half since I was placed w brace. I have been and out physically therapy because my dr of physical therapy has had to cancel my follow ups and their aids cannot work w me until the dr sees me. My mind sees me walking my body starts to walk then it’s like nope pain. Needless to say I am frustrated & scared to walk or not to get back to walking without assistance. I will be using your video on top of my at home work papers from my physical therapy team. Thank you.
You're welcome, and good luck with your recovery.
Hello, I had the exact same fracture. My OCF surgery happened on October 3rd 2023. It has been five months since, and from Mid January I began using the arm crutch and from Mid Feb, I was told to take it off and walk. But the pain is unbearable. So I still use the crutch, more for moral support and also because I know pain and fear combined can cause more injuries. So just want to say it;s getting better each day, I am trying to overcome the fear one at a time each day, and walking with my arm crutch for 25 minutes 4 times a week. Plus daily self-physio. Hang in there. It will get better I promise.

Hi, do you have any links for help with physio exercises after a fused knee,( knee Arthrodesis)? My friends physio has been delayed and I want to find things to help, things she should be doing now. She has the fusion over Christmas.
Thank you for any pointers and help 🙏
That's not really something we've worked with much and the exercises will very much depend on what she is capable of, so I'm afraid I cant help.

Thank you so much for this video. Just started walking with the boots but my doctor said it’s ok to walk without it
You are welcome!
Just what I need cannot walk much
broke and dislocated my ankle feb 24th surgery on the 26th.. Just cleared for full weight ber yesterday. So scared to walk
fractured my ankle (the lateral malleolus right) abit more than 6 weeks ago, took my cast off recently . Been wearing an ankle brace one doctor said I could start slowly weight bearing and another said wait some weeks as the fracture hasn't fully united yet. What would you recommend?
Careful weightbearing can often help fractures heal better but I can't suggest what is right for you because I don't know your case.
Thank you so much for this video. Just had my cast off after 6 weeks non weight bearing and have been told I can now fully weight bear. I do have a cam boot but am only partially weight bearing and using crutches. I am terrified to fully weight bear. This will really help me start to weight bear!
Best of luck!
Me too. Just got my cast removed. I am using crutches to support my retraining to walk. My muscles and ligaments around the fracture are so tight and painful.
@@m.taylor Good luck. One week on and following these exercises I have more range of movement. Had to go back to hospital Monday for them to check my swollen purple foot! Normal apparently! Have now been told not to use the boot! Still no referral for physio so thank goodness for these videos!
@@dogbehaviourclinic2022 That is great that you have more range of motion from doing these exercises. I have a referral note for physio but am afraid to step outside in the event I may fall and break more bones. Thank goodness for youtube. Take care.
@@m.taylor Still no physio appt! Would be lost without these exercises. Going outside for the first time is scary but once you get over the fear, it is fine. I am now able to go up to kennels again to work with the dogs (albeit sitting down and having to get a lift there and back). Almost able to get my foot flat with my leg straight. Wasn't prepared for all the new aches and pains in various parts of my ankle, foot and leg! Everything is still so tight.
I've got two knees that needs replacing I fell a few days ago and now got weber c ankle break full moulded cast toe to knee my problem is I cannot weight bear they've given me a zimmer frame I put all my weight on good foot and use upper body strength unfortunately the only way to move is put my non weight bearing foot to the floor with hardly any weight on it I have to go to fracture clinic Monday to see if its move I had realignment am I doing a lot more damage? If so it will be pinned thanks in advance Janet Jones
Hi Janet - one of those knee scooter things may be of use - but not sure if it will work with your knees being bad - perhaps getting a memory foam cushion for on top can also help: geni.us/gPMZ
I had my ACL replaced with autograft by artroscopy 5 weeks ago and i was non weight bearing for 4 weeks. Now i have started to put some weight on it but i was so frightened. I walked for a few days with 1 crutch only but i have tender muscles on the opposite calf because i don't have the courage or feeling of walking with that midpoint correctly. This video is helping me because i feel the transition from crutches to no crutches is really rushed and they look at me like i am a scared kid but i simply cannot yet go without the crutches. I notice i find the midpoint if i use lightly both crutches, just touching then to the ground and trying to keep the weight mostly on the legs. I am going to exercise some more. I don't want to lose the crutches only to walk inclined to one side and in pain.
Thanks for sharing, and good luck with your recovery.
Hi Maryke. I'm not weight bearing yet. Had surgery on 19/01/2024 after a trimalleolar fracture.
Would you be able to advise whether I am allowed to do tiny exercises?
Wiggling my toes
Stretching toes outward
While seated with elevated foot, reach to touch my toes
Pushing my heel 'forward'
I would really appreciate it ❤
I'm currently in a 'half cast', going for first check-up on 13/02/2024
You need to ask your doctor who did the surgery - I can't provide safe advice on this - they will know what is important at this point.
Hi, I got fractured and slight dislocation in 2nd metatarsal of my left foot and fixed the dislocation with small labrascopic process on 19.Jan.2024. Now at 17.Feb.2024. doctor confirmed perfect bone development, removed the locating pin from leg and advised to walk slightly. But unfortunately i got foot drop and cant lift my ankle and leg fingers. Also there is swelling still seen in my leg. Am confused and worrying how could i walk normally in future.😢 😢. Pls advise me.
Ask your doctor to refer you to a physiotherapist - they will be able to assess it for you and give you rehab exercises to help you walk normal again.
Pls make a vedio for ROM😊
I've added it to the list but it will unfortunately take time to make - ask you doctor to refer you to a physio who can give you exercises in the meantime.
I am on 5th week after fibula (weber A area) fracture ORIF surgery. I was given 50% weight bearing exactly on 30th day after surgery. But Doc gave me a boot like thing too for using till 6th week. I tried walking without it and I was fine. Should i leave that boot and try walking or continue till 6th week
Follow your doctor's instructions - they know what is right for your case
I’m two weeks out on 5M fracture in foot mid shaft non displaced and told I can WB as tolerated. I cannot lift my heel like that as I am told to wear a boot or the flat shoe to prevent exactly that movement.
This video is not for you if you need to wear a boot - this video is for when you are allowed to walk without the boot on. So, you have to wait a bit.
I walked up my garden for the first time without a crutch today. As you say, it its weird.
I'm still in a walking boot with crutches. What alterations do you recommend
I can't really safely advise on this because I don't know your situation and what you are allowed to do and not allowed to do in your boot. Your physio should be able to give tailored advice.
Excellent delivery...do you do a video for post bunion surgery?
Unfortunately we don't. Thank you for the suggestion - I've put it on the to-do list.
Yes, please! I'm 5 months post bunion and walking but I'm still so nervous to put all my weight.
Tibia platue fracture 4 months ago but unable to bend the knee
Hello ✨ I also have a bilateral fractured tibia and scared of the weight bearing. Not quite to a full standing, but the knee stiffness is a big issue. How is it going for you and what has helped?
I got grade I lateral malleolus fracture its been 4 weeks doctor just told to elevate the leg but not any other specific guidance. But i am really struggling for washroom purposes. Can i now walk on my own with the support of crutches ?
Please ask your doctor - we can't tell what is right for you without knowing your complete situation and doing an assessment.
Hello, l fractured my ancle with open dislocation. I had a plaster on for 6 weeks and l started physiotherapy and exercises now at home. I have a question how long will it take me to walk on my feet normally again?
It can take about 8 to 12 weeks, from when you are allowed full weightbearing - but this can vary a lot.
Hello, my dear I’m Nfamara Jaiteh I do replacement to my right side but my right side longer than left side how to do I need your idea please 🙏🙏
Hi there,
We cannot provide individual treatment advice without doing an in-depth assessment of your injury and your personal circumstances, as the advice might not be appropriate for you. You're welcome to book a video consultation with one of our physios if you would like an assessment and a personalised treatment plan: www.sports-injury-physio.com/
I'm currently 2 weeks and 2 days into a fractured fibula situation. Been in a half cast from 30 March to 9 April, and now in a moonboot permanently. My bad leg is gone so much thinner, thigh and calf muscle shrunk so much and I still got 2.5 weeks to go in this boot, until my final x-ray. Will I ever get the muscles back and will my left leg get back to it's normal size? It's freaking me out and really messing me up psychologically🙏🏾
Of course it will! It's normal to worry about this but it will come back through rehab. Just know that it can take several months of consistent rehab to get it back to normal.
@@SportsInjuryPhysio Thank you for your reply. I will do what's necessary. Your videos really help too🙏🏾
My foot hurts from the heel and the sole of the foot, what should I do with the exercise? Less weight, less angle? Or should I just wait to go to the Physio?
It's really best to ask a physio who can check it for you.
I broke 5th metarsal in 2 places, & have severe ankle sprain. Jan 19th, so it's been 4 weeks of non weight bearing.
I live on 2nd floor & can't get to pt yet. I'm still in great pain even though the pain has decreased in 4 weeks.
Is it normal to wait 2 more weeks before I try to walk on it?
Is it normal to get calf pain due to immobilization?
Lastly, can you show us how on earth to get up & down from a floor mat?
I saw an exercise video to strengthen injured leg on a floor mat but due to shoulder issues & arthritis in hands, I have NO IDEA how to get up & down from the floor.
Appreciate input on these questions. 😊
If you're having trouble getting down to the floor, why not do the exercises on your bed? It works for most exercises.
Fractures in the foot can take 6 to 12 weeks before you can walk on them - follow your doctor's advice with regards to that because otherwise you can interfere with the healing and they will adjust the advice depending on your specific case.
Yes, your calf can hurt but if it may also be useful to discuss with your doctor to make sure it is not a blood clot.
@SportsInjuryPhysio thankyou!!! Appreciate response. Wasn't sure if bed was sturdy enough for the exercises, as opposed to a hard floor. So if my foot still hurts to put weight on it at 6 weeks, I shouldn't rush PT? (& yes...I will call dr to talk about too.😉)
Regarding blood clots, what is the biggest sign?
God bless you! 🙏❤️
I have been on external fixator for 11 months due to tibia fibula fracture and my ankle is very stiff. Which exercises can I do to make it loose and back to its original state ?
Did you try going to physical therapy?
Yes however he can’t do much since my bone is not completely joined and he is scared he might misalign it
I have started walking without crutches and moonboot last week and my ankle is very painful
It is really important to follow the guidelines of your physio and doctor who knows your situation - if your physiotherapist is unsure, they need to check with the doctor who is in charge of your care.
Thank You. I will bring this up to the Dr
Im in a wheelchair from age of 13
Now im 24. And i want to walk again
I fractured my right calcaneus angkle on 15 feb 2024. My mom has been forcing me to train to walk again, but I always feel tingling feeling when i put my feet on the floor, and it starts feeling pain when i start putting weight on it. It's also still visibly swollen. Should i start walking again, or should i wait until my next appointment (5 April)?
I think I need to convince my mom somehow 😅 She is probably got tired after weeks of taking care of me so I kind of understand, but still I don't want to injure myself.
It is absolutely normal for it to still be swollen. The tingling often also happens because a little nerve is irritated and it is usually fine to walk on it (although it can be super uncomfortable at the start). You will find that the more you start to gently use your leg in a normal way, the tingling often also then starts to go away. So perhaps just start by standing normally on it and then you can build to walking over several days.
@@SportsInjuryPhysio I've been able to stand on my own for a few days now but my balance is still very off. While trying to get my balance centered, now I'm adding some toes training with towels and following some physio videos online to build strength before learning to walk again. I think I'm on the right track 😊
I had a surgery on the 5 of January 2024 . Tibia after how many weeks or months can I be putting weight on the leg
Ask your doctor - it will depend on how well the surgery went and how well you are healing.

Sounds like you perhaps need to get it checked to make sure you are ready for walking. This video may also provide some ideas: th-cam.com/video/8jzeuBj86EI/w-d-xo.html

How does one tell that they are exerting partial weight bearing on an ankle which was in a cast for 10 weeks due to lateral malleous fracture
As long as you do the following 3 things, you are doing partial weightbearing:
1. Use crutches - you can't do partial without crutches
2. Place some weight through the crutches as you step with the injured leg
3. It should be pain free - so if it hurts, place more weight through the crutches and less on your foot.
Thank you so much for the advice.
Am experiencing pain and swelling all around the ankle joint. And pain the heel when I step on it.
Broke Tibula and Fibula last year 2023 June. Had external fixture wires and skrews. Had 3 casts and my leg is still broken 8 months now. I'm wearing a boot but the pain. I can't understand how must I walk with both bones still broken😢
What type of fractures were they?
Hello! I started to walk after operatiin ancle, but l walk very slowly. How can l walk quicker what to do with this???. I am doing exercises at home.
Your walking will improve as your ankle recovers and strengthens - keep doing your rehab and ask your physio to progress the exercises once they become easy.
Am experiencing pain on the heel when doing partial weight bearing. Is it normal to experience pain during the heel - toes motion?
Your physio or doctor will be able to answer that because it depends on your specific case. But for most people it can feel a bit uncomfortable when they first start weightbearing.
Thank you doc
I don't kniw how to tell how much weight I'm putting on my foot
A physio will be able to help you understand that better but sometimes looking in a mirror can help - check that you are not leaning to one side but standing straight
This account is for my daughter. By the way, I am male 38 years old. I have broke my calcaneus, January 22 2024 done with surgery. I am now almost 6weeks recovery my doctor advice me try to walk. But when I try to walk I cannot bend my ankle with pain and stiffness so I cant walk and step well my foot. So my question is I want to learn how to overcome the stiffness and bend my ankle so I can walk slowly. In addition I have feel pain because of swelling my foot also. Actually my doctor advise me for therapy. But since I saw this video I hope will help me.
Rehab exercises are super important to get your full function back - but this video may also help you understand why it is so stiff and sore and what to do about it - I know it is about ankle fractures but it applies to your case as well: th-cam.com/video/q7aMU9salbU/w-d-xo.html
Three weeks ago partialy torn my lcl and I am so scared to even stand up, doctor says its fine but when I straighten my leg while standing (without putting weight on it) it hurts and when I tried walking with only one crutche, my knee cap fell out of its socket and caused me a lot of pain. I dont know what to do with that..
Go see a physiotherapist - they can help you figure it out and provide exercises to help strengthen all the areas you need for walking.
I have been non weight bearing for 6 weeks. Can I start to try standing using full weight now?
Don't know - you need to ask your doctor or physio - it depends on your injury and what the healing process needs.
Sprained my ankle just the other day; the muscles just flat out don’t work for weight bearing at all.
I share more advice for ankle sprains in this playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLkRW4ITRa6bAXw48EQPjY44dH24mX-Wd9.html
I have managed to get to a year and just wondering how to deal with ankle stiffness
I don't really understand what you mean with managed to get to a year - perhaps if you provide a bit more detail I can advise better.
@@SportsInjuryPhysiomam could you pls help me I don't have enough money to go to a physiotherapist nearby... uuh I had a knee dislocation on my left leg and ankle fracture on the right leg.. Now it's been 2½months i have not been putting weight on both legs.. At first I tried to only stand up while using my hand's pressure on the wheelchair ...my head used to spin alot now it's alrt..from yesterday I tried walking 2 3 steps with a walker while putting 100% weight on my dislocated knee leg and not much pressure on the surgical leg ..but the thing is I cannot stand up or sit down while putting 100%weight on my left leg (patella dislocation one) it's like when I put my hands on the walker and try to stand up I can't I don't know if it's my fear but I feel like my knee shakes hurts and feels not too safe to just stand up while putting full pressure on the left foot ...it just affects my knee.. How do I strengthen that it feels like it will come out? because now I stand up or sit while putting pressure on my hands being on the handle of the wheelchair..how do I stand up and sit while putting full pressure on my left kneecap since I can't put pressure on the other leg where my ankle broke it has screws and plates in it. Is it weak because I have not been using my legs for 2months. Will my kneecap dislocate again if I put 100% weight
Tri malleollus fracture with 2 pins and plate and screws non weight baring for 6 to 8 weeks. I'm terrified. My surgery was February 23rd 2024
Discuss your fears with your physio - they will help you find ways to overcome it in a safe manner.
Buy the raised toilet seat with side arms. Also get a shower bench and kneel on it instead of sitting on it. Get the right height knee scooter too. I first bought off Amazon the deluxe model with real tires. I almost tipped it over daily the first several days. Fortunately I went to a local medical supply store and was able to try several models. The one with skinny tires worked best even though I am overweight.I broke my heel and tore Achilles tendon in two places the week before Christmas. I was literally having panic attacks over how to live non weight bearing.
@Sunintheam8 my cousin bought the knee scooter and I'm uncomfortable to use it. I can't get up off the couch with the knees scooter I have to use my regular walker and the knee scooter doesn't fit in the bathroom. I wanted a toilet seat but I didn't get one.
@maureenblutekraus3561 I have not been able to sit in a regular chair during the no weight bearing. I either sit on a barstool set at a height usable with scooter or I lie on my bed.
@maureenblutekraus3561 I was afraid of scooter until I found the correct size. I never would have believed a smaller scooter would be more stable for a heavier person. The first "deluxe" scooter even set below the lowest knee pad setting was simply too high for someone 5'5" tall. I had read that was a problem for other people in the reviews too.
I broke my ankle on January 12, needed to have surgery and that was January 14th. Today birthday seen the surgeon and was told I could take my boot off and start weight barring, he gave me a script to go to physio but I don't have coverage and can't financially afford it. I'm going to try and borrow enough to get into a season or two. Can I find more videos on TH-cam to do at home? Thank you so much for this video. I'm a nervous wreck and super scared. I was under the impression I could walk today because it wasn't fully explained I needed to gradually put weight on it and I put all weight on it for a moment , holy heck it hurt and I almost fell.
I don't know why it says birthday lol it's supposed to say I
