I really do feel like chemical restrictions are way over the top at this point. None of this seems to noticably stop any criminal activity, but it does crush amateur chemistry absolutely.
So much of what is banned is basic building blocks of chemical synthesis. Acids, basic lab equipment, even elements like bromine or iodine.
None of that gets seen as a downside, because the effects are not immediately visible, but they render it impossible to exercise your curiosity and scientific interest in one of the major scientific disciplines, chemistry, and you drive a society towards a path where science isn't understood or respected.
I think the rejection of science is at least partly a result of restrictions like these, stifling natural curiosity, and leading to anti-intellectuallism.

I wonder how many new inventions per year don't happen because of this. So many of the great things we discovered over the years happened coincidentally by people just messing around. It's no longer possible.

The entire war on drugs is complete failure. No cartel violence has been stopped by banning MDMA/LSD/etc, no fentanyl overdoses, no lives ruined by heroin. You can say even less for banning amateur chemistry. All these laws have done have caused suffering, and ensure America has a morally repulsive private prison (slave) industry. The only approaches that have worked for dealing with drugs, are ones that come at it from a compassionate stand - therapy, harm reduction, etc
Much like the red scare, the war on drugs was cooked up by a bunch of short-sighted, ignorant, moral-panicking conservatives who had no business making decisions at a government level.
And yet people keep voting them in.

@@YouCanHasAccount I enjoyed chemistry as a child and teenager. Now I only watch videos occasionally. I must say that the effort to limit is appalling. Rather than inventions, I wonder how many young people don't get into chemistry at all because it's difficult to get started. My path went elsewhere, but as a child I discovered a box with some laboratory glassware, and I bought everything in the ordinary village drugstore without any problems. It is no longer possible to buy half of it (in the EU) because of the fight against terrorists and drugs. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

I don’t know if you can blame the DEA here for once. The FDA banned safrole in food in 1960. It caused cancer in rats but in such huge doses banning it was probably unnecessary. MDMA didn’t really pop off until the 70’s and 80’s, and wasn’t made illegal until 1985.

Molecular sieves are best used for polishing water content when you make anhydrous solvents, and they need time, like 24 hours minimum. Using them for drying the organic phase after extraction is a bit of waste of them, believe me, you won't see a big difference with such short drying between anhydrous sodium/magnesium sulfate and a mix of it with sieves.

The DEA doesn’t prescribe meds. If your doctor believed they would help your condition, your doc can prescribe. I’m sorry you hate people so much….

    • @johnrutherford2326
      @johnrutherford2326 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

@ other countries actually allow people to purchase their own medication such as Mexico, Canada, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, just because we have an overdose situation here doesn’t mean that that is the standard way of living. People who have these issues tend to have more deep rooted mental health issues which this country is sorely lacking the ability to deal with that is why we have so many overdoses. It doesn’t have anything to do with the regulation of medication for pain that lead to overdoses. If what you’re saying was true then every country that had pain meds would have a high rate of overdose which the statistics just aren’t there.

Oh dear, you just experienced the joy of playing with catechols; they oxidize and polymerize every chance they get... You're probably oxidizing a bunch of it since catechols are VERY easily oxidized in basic media and Al3+ has also been show to increase the rate of oxidation under acidic conditions. Even in rigourously deoxygenated conditions, a tiny amount of ortho-quinone impurities in you catechol coming from air oxidation can comproportionate with the catechol during the reaction and form 2 equivalents of semi-quinone radicals, which can initiate radical polymerization. This would also explain all the weirdly colored oils you observed.

A question that could be a video possibly... my pet hamster found that dissolving street cocaine hydrochloride in room temp dry isopropanol dumped out the good salt while dissolving the contaminants. Another hamster suggested that isopropanol would react with the good salt, and my hamster found that around 60 degs C this would be the case. Luckily my pet hamster isn't into crack as such a discovery would have made a real mess of his life. Am I seeking confirmation of this method? I have no idea, I just think its fun to play around with these things and see what gives.

You should invest in TLC plates so you don't have to decide on a random reaction time. Also, a future update with an NMR or IR spectrum (former preferred but more expensive) would be desirable. The secret to good yields is (usually) purity. Pyridine looked too dirty; you could've distilled and dried it before use; AlCl3 seemed too yellow. Also, deciding upon a purification method beforehand is desirable so that messing around with different methods won't eat your yield. But still, these are just suggestions.

DEA made a mistake and tried to analog statute me. They said something was 10 times more powerful than meth when it was 10 times less... real idiots. Buttttt they still knocked down the front door and ruined my life.. temporarily...
Someone, not me, spent a decade of spare time designing low/undetectable chemical and bioweapons to unleash on the agents for their bullshiit to avenge. Real good stuff... next level shit. They even got all of the agents home addresses, I heard, after years of networking, I can't say how to get all these people's home addresses just in case somebody reads it and uses it, but let's just say Chance favors the prepared mind. It would have been an unprecedented reversal of fortune for some people and would have been front page news lol. But, I heard about what they were planning :) and convinced them that there's no need to avenge me. That my troubles were my own fault and not the agents. So they gave it up and I decided to make cool legal chemical business'.
So I say this as a warning, I have guys still following me 20 years later. I'm not kidding you. No they're not following me everyday but every year or so I catch dudes, most likely DEA or FBI agents, following me to see what I'm up to see if I'm staying clean or designing the synthesis of meth, MDMA or fentanyl from undetectable gas phase catylic synthesis using ethane, nitrogen and hydrogen with catalysts like Platinum, nickel, vanadium pendoxide, zeolite, chromium, molybdenum etc. :) once you buy one watched chemical they always watch you and your internet connection. They will let years go by before they arrest you so that they can build up a network of who you're working with. If you don't ever want to get caught gas phase synthesis of all materials from day one!!!!!

It irritates me greatly that I'd need to import sassafras oil (for culinary use... the amounts I'd use are so small that any illicit use would be infeasible in any case). Birch oil is available but a very poor substitute. The DEA would regulate carbon atoms if they could...
Fun story: I once trolled the DEA by asking them about the legalities of buying street meth and converting it into pseudoephedrine because I objected to the identification demand (the pharmacy fills my (actual) narcotics prescriptions without batting an eye.. go figure). They responded humorlessly that since I'd need to possess the methamphetamine I'd be breaking the law. I replied "OK; I won't help you get meth off the street, though you obviously can't do your job yourselves" -- I won't say it's connected, but since this exchange I am "randomly" selected for secondary airport screening much more than statistically plausible.

Aluminum chloride doesn't directly demethylate the methoxy group in eugenol. Instead, aluminum chloride could facilitate the electrophilic aromatic substitution of the allyl group but not directly remove the methoxy group.. Also the formation of the methylenedioxy bridge (methyleneation) typically requires a different reagent, such as formaldehyde and a strong base (e.g., sodium hydroxide) or a specific methylene transfer reagent like dichloromethane in the presence of a base like K2CO3 can work but usually in different conditions.
