This financial literacy bs shifts the failures of capitalism from the system to the individual. If you work in retail or customer service, even working full time, you can only stretch money so far . People shouldn’t be sold this idea that if you work hard success and stability will come- because billionaires and CEOs make their living off of the exploitation of their workers.their profits are unpaid wages. Let’s not romanticize capitalism or view finance as anything other that neoliberalism or feudalism.
I only started at 29! Before that, I thought I was being smart for having all my money in the bank. Then I learned most wealthy people have only a few months of an emergency fund in their bank and then all their extra money is in investments like index funds. Again I thought I was being smart by avoiding all risks, but losing money to inflation is almost the same risk, soooooo you might as well have your money make money while you’re out making money too.

seriously would love this too, but with a conscientious approach. In general I've understood and experienced myself that people who have had it hard financially growing up do not spend their money wisely or save up, contrary to what was said in this video. there is some psychology at play here, it would sound counterintuitive but it is in fact not. Just like how the biggest spenders on lottery tickets are the lesser neighbourhoods, however the winning ticket always falls in a higher-income- suburb.

For Elena: I know this is kind of late but as someone who's just graduated with a degree in journalism: Don't waste your money on a degree! For me, it was a good decision - mostly because I got to do a long term paid internship at a respected newspaper which allowed me to build a portfolio of written work. But for someone like you, who already has published content which relates to documentarism, I think pursuing a degree would be a waste of both time and money. So much of the hiring process consists of portfolio reviews that the best option for you would probably be to utilize your YT content to try and get a foot in when you pitch your ideas to production companies. "Journalist" is not a protected title, and so long as your output is made with regards to the journalistic traditions of pursued objectivity, critically reviewing all of your sources, and an emphasis on informing the public in order to aid democratic values, I wouldn't personally take any issue with calling you a journalist. A lot of modern journalism doesn't even follow tradition that strictly, and there are so many people working within the field whose educational backgrounds aren't related to it - whose individual perspectives are just as valuable as those attributed to people who do have degrees within journalism. Providing perspective is part of the beauty of the craft, after all. So summa summarum: Spend your free time reading up on the core values of the field and try to use your existing network to get a feel of how those are applied, and to get some basic experience with larger scale documentary production. But save your money for retirement. Good journalists aren't made in study halls.
