His father, Battista Farina was nicknamed "Pinin," which means “the little one." Battista founded the design house under the name Carrozzeria Pinin Farina, and his prestige was so great that, in 1961, the President of the Italian Republic, acting on a proposal made by the Minister of Justice, granted Battista permission to change his last name to “Pininfarina.” So Sergio was born Sergio Farina, but later became Sergio Pininfarina. -Jessi
Great video. Sergio has created a Maserati Quattroporte, Ferrari Enzo, 250 LM and 275 GTB, the Peugeot 406 Coupe, Lancia Beta Monte Carlo, Morris in 1100. Thank you for everything.
He will truly be missed, this is why I like MotorTrend, you guys honor the innovators that shaped the future and keep it classy while doing so, and also you guys have hired some of the best speakers I have heard in awhile, Jessi Lang always does an amazing jobs when presenting facts and it sounds likes she puts her heart on it as well. Keep it up guys!!!
Ya know, to answer that last quest there of who will be looked back on in future generations like Pinin Farina is now I truly believe the answer is no one. The barometer will shift too much. That level of Artistry and Craftsmanship will never have a time like it once did.
Jessi Lang: the total package. An amazing writer, host, producer; she's insanely smart, well-spoken, open-minded, beautiful, cool. . . ad infinitum ∞ Way to go, MotorTrend! She's the future of automotive media.
Tremendously written piece with great vocabulary and information many people, including myself, did not know about Mr. Pininfarina. Very classy tribute to an automotive icon.
Best WOT ever. You guys should just make a bio show like this. This worked surprisingly well with just "ken burn'ing" some stills. Props to whoever did the research, gathered up the images, and wrote the script.
Jessi Lang is a hell of a good presenter. Her delivery and tone of voice make what she's saying sound as if you are listening to something very cool and interesting, it is of course but the point is that's what she manages to convey to the audience.
Pinnifarina has been celebrated even when he was alive mate. Everyone respected his designs. It is only fitting that when he goes, that guys like Motor Trend give him a fitting tribute to show that he is not forgotten.
Peter Schreyer. Creator of the original Audi TT, the New Beetle, the designer who set Audi on the right path and presetnly is turning KIA into a deisgn-led powerhouse.
absolutely great presentation and great charisma. Definitely one of the best automotive presenters in the world. Go Jessi! Love you guys of Motor Trend
Dude, the Testarossa is my dream car and I think it's absolutely beautiful. Don't rag on it man. If you are a true car enthusiast, you can appreciate every car out there respectively.
yet an other great video hosted with such respect and clarity that i admire so much if there will be somebody to look back on with much admiration it will probably be you jessi being one of the best automotive video hosts out there may Caroll and Sergio grace the heavens as they should being the gods of the automotive industry
Hey Jessi!! I've always loved the Dino series Ferrari's. It's a shame he passed away few people can design cars as beautiful as the ones he churned out.
Sergio was more a manager than a designer, though he probably did provide broad design guidance. The Dino 206, Daytona, 308 GTB, and Testarossa are, of course, designs from Leonardo Fioravante. His designs are what we think of when we think of the great Pininfarina designs.
I'd say we will look back with some admiration on Peter Schreyer. Did the original TT among other cars at audi and really put them on the path of being the style leader they are today before going to Kia and doing it again, at lower cost points and with a brand that had no style at all before.
Peter Schreyer has made a name for himself in the design world, but credit for the original TT should go to Freeman Thomas, J Mays and Martin Smith. I understand Peter Schreyer was Audi's head of design during the time.
I wanna congratulate with the person who posted this video , fortunately a first corrected short anthology of Ing Sergio Pininfarina that remembers him in a right way ; As Italian i'm shocked by the less space in the News of our Country about this important Disigner and industrial captain who contribuited to create the Style in the history of cars. Bye bye and best regards to all the admirators!
I like this guys style and not because he made my all time favorite Ferrari and Maserati you can just see the passion that he put into the cars he created what a true icon oneday I hope to own one of your cars
It is a loss obviously. What a life! Wow - to be able to bring your talents to the world. Nobody can replace him. I am very happy that he was able to bring the design of the testarossa to us - I am also very happy that you made this video. Jonathan Dunn
"Thank you for that. And I understand what you mean; western-centric tendencies often prevail in US news. But with our international team and our global focus, we're hoping to stand in contrast to myopic news outlets." -Jessi
Oh dear! - What a poor tribute! As others have previously stated, the Ferrari 250 GTO was designed completely in-house! Pininfarina had nothing to do with it whatsoever! (and the first car they show@2:11 is a 250 SWB not a GTO!). As for the catalogue of cars @4:22: They're all Bertone designs! - One of Pininfarina's biggest rivals! Very poor attention to detail!
Yes, now that i saw that very good piece on Sergio who seemed to have an overwhelming number of hits all those years (hard to accomplish for any designer of any kind),,, I want more! Bring on Nuccio Bertone, and Marcello Gandini.
The Giulia first appeared in 1962 at the time Giugiaro was about 24yrs old.If I remember correctly the Giulia was styled in-the-house at Alfa Romeo.Leonardo Fioravanti styled the Daytona but at the time he was part of the Pininfarina company and we have the same problem as with Miura-Bertone-Marcello Gandini.
Designers that we will talk about in 50 years time will be: Ian Callum, Ralph Gilles, Chris Bangle They each designed some extraordinary cars that will look great in 20-30 years and become future classic for sure
Yes but the idrive was a stroke of brilliance....it may not have been very easy to use at first, but almost every luxury car on the market today uses a controller-concept similiar to idrive...that was revolutionary
a car is flawed, and still give it respect for what it is and what it does. Like I said before, if you are a TRUE car enthusiast, you can appreciate every car out there RESPECTIVELY. I'm not saying you have to like every car, I'm saying you can give a car and it's maker props where it's due.
Interesting discussion, isn't it? Well, chassis number 4713GT did come with Pininfarina designed body. It was based on the 330LMB body; still built by Scaglietti.
Chris Bangle single-handedly destroyed BMW's classy timeless look that made them famous in the 80's. Thats what people will be saying about Chris Bangle 50 years from now. As for Ralph Gilles i think he designed the new SRT Viper i dont know, but what i do know is it's one damn good looking car.
I believe one of the Farinas were consulted when Scaglietti was working on the GTO body shape, but Pininfarina was not responsible for the car, like most mis-informed "Armchair experts" think. www.johnstarkeycars.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2015%2F12%2FThe-Origins-of-the-Ferrari-250-GTO.pdf
those lambos and lancia stratos are all bertone cars by marcello gandini and cars like the 250 gto were designed and bodied by scaglietti. The most famous ferrari cars like f40 and 288 gto were designed by leonardo fioraventi under the pininfarina name
@4:22- those are Bertone cars. Many are, at least. Urraco? Stratos? X1/9? Need I say more? He was a great designer, but that shot is giving credit for designs not wearing the Pininfarina “F.” I commented about this earlier, but TH-cam cut it out for some reason.
Hey Jessi, Nice show. As for important figures to be remembered for their contributions to the automotive industry, you can't leave out Lee Iacocca, Bob Lutz, and Elon Musk. These men brought us the mustang, viper, tesla roadster, and as lame as it sounds the Caravan. These cars forever changed the industry. Not to mention Elon is also an amazing entrepreneur who's spacex company will revolutionize outter space discovery. Hope this makes your list too. Later Gator.
Ian Callum might've made a name for himself by possibly doing the impossible. That F-Type looks fantastic, and it wasn't designed in the middle of a dark night like its predecessor
Bizzarini and Chiti were the engineers, the body was formed by designer Sergio Scaglietti. After Bizzarini and Chiti left, the engineering was taken over by a very young Maura Forghieri. ;-)
What Giulia we are talking about? I meant the 4doors saloon. If the coupe Giulia GT Giugiaro was at the time (1960-1965) at Bertone who is signed on the car.The same goes for Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina. The exact truth of how much of a design is dew to the young apprentice/young genius ,and how much to his elders,is something we will never know.
Most of Pininfarina's car designs look like they're smiling. Either the headlamps sit above the smiling grill, or places just slightly above the grill, in the case of the Quattroporte.
Giorgetto Giugiaro is and will surely be remembered with the same level of admiration and esteem as Pininfarina.
I purchased my car because it was love at first sight. Pininfarina designs are truly art.
This guy was actually acknowledged during most of his life and credited for creating some of the most exiting car designs ever.
Great piece. Nice to see an American channel paying respect to an Italian designer.
Caroll Shelby and Sergio Pininfarina where rockstars of the car world.
May they both Rest In Peace.
In America, our parallel was Harley Earl, the son of a Coach Builder; and lead Design Manager at GM.
-Jessi
What a well written and skillfully presented piece. Thank you Jessi.
Mr. Pinifarina has given shape to many of our dreams and aspirations.
Great video. Sergio has created a Maserati Quattroporte, Ferrari Enzo, 250 LM and 275 GTB, the Peugeot 406 Coupe, Lancia Beta Monte Carlo, Morris in 1100. Thank you for everything.
these people can never be replaced !!!!!

"So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for your feedback!" -Jessi
Jessi Lang: the total package. An amazing writer, host, producer; she's insanely smart, well-spoken, open-minded, beautiful, cool. . . ad infinitum ∞
Way to go, MotorTrend! She's the future of automotive media.
R.I.P Sergio Pininfarina and thank you for partnering up with General Motors.
R.I.P Carol Shelby thank you for racing Chevy Convairs.
Amazing work and ethics that may never be replaced. Rip
"That's wonderful to hear! Thank you, my friend!" -Jessi

At 4:21 the pics of the cars shown are Bertone designs, not Pininfarina.
Pinnifarina has been celebrated even when he was alive mate. Everyone respected his designs. It is only fitting that when he goes, that guys like Motor Trend give him a fitting tribute to show that he is not forgotten.
jessi you write some of the most beautiful automotive pieces on the internet
I think Sergio designed Jessi Lang.
I like what you've done with your Mustache Claude ;)
Funny
Horacio Pagani, in my humble appreciation, is the new Pininfarina.
Peter Schreyer. Creator of the original Audi TT, the New Beetle, the designer who set Audi on the right path and presetnly is turning KIA into a deisgn-led powerhouse.
4:22 Forgive my ignorance if I'm wrong but aren't a lot of those cars Bertone designs?
+The Red Buffoon yes, they are
ow wow i forgot about Bertone. i was a big car fan as a little kid. bertones were so cool.
yeah almost all. Bertone would be having a fit if they were still around.
Those guys are really the essence of modern and contemporary design, let's wait for their new designs!
absolutely great presentation and great charisma. Definitely one of the best automotive presenters in the world. Go Jessi! Love you guys of Motor Trend
Excellent job hosting this episode! Keep it up Jessi!
I finally got around to seeing this peace. Great job Jessi, great designer Sergio!!
Dude, the Testarossa is my dream car and I think it's absolutely beautiful. Don't rag on it man. If you are a true car enthusiast, you can appreciate every car out there respectively.
"Much appreciated! Thanks for letting us know!" -Jessi

Thank you for this Jessi.
Hey Jessi!! I've always loved the Dino series Ferrari's. It's a shame he passed away few people can design cars as beautiful as the ones he churned out.
very good! I really enjoyed it! I would love to see one about Ferrucio Lamborghini :D
Wow! Very informative and well put together.
It certainly is!Maybe ,because we are not "fighting" about anything ,but to learn something about a fascinating era in motoring history.
Sergio was more a manager than a designer, though he probably did provide broad design guidance.

RIP Pininfarina, you were truly a legend in the car world. You will be missed dearly, your legacy will continue on forever.
He is a genius, testarossa is by far one of my favorite ferraris of all time
I preferthe original 1960) Testrossa.
I stay watching this videos! Great videos guys.
Why didn't a video like this come out while he was still alive, why must we wait until someone passes away for us to knowledge their greatness?!
I like this guys style and not because he made my all time favorite Ferrari and Maserati you can just see the passion that he put into the cars he created what a true icon oneday I hope to own one of your cars
Sergio Pininfarina and Carrol Shelby legends from a great time in car history
Great video!! As always jessi!
It is a loss obviously. What a life! Wow - to be able to bring your talents to the world. Nobody can replace him. I am very happy that he was able to bring the design of the testarossa to us - I am also very happy that you made this video. Jonathan Dunn

which car revs in the beginning? it sounds fantastic
Jessi should be in movies.
Yes, now that i saw that very good piece on Sergio who seemed to have an overwhelming number of hits all those years (hard to accomplish for any designer of any kind),,, I want more! Bring on Nuccio Bertone, and Marcello Gandini.
Chris Bangle. May not be appreciate today, but he will be considered one of the most influential in years to come.
I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of names she pronounced incorrectly.

great guy, great review
anybody knows where I can get some more information of pininfarina maybe also in german?
Wow this guy was a boss, literally!

This guy made cars artwork masterpiece is it that you have to give them credit words to his style is like a Texido never goes out of style

I used to read all the hotrod mags as the store would trow away.i realixed what a great magazine then later I would buy as I like the updates
chris bangle is a designer who we will be appreciated after 50 years
Jessi, well said! LIKED
i really cant understand the english completly but i love her voice and the vids
Thanks for the useful addition.
I just wonder why you didn't involve that in your video.
Jason Castriota and Ian Callum will both be legends years from now. They already kind of are
this man was a genius who built beautiful cars may he r.i.p.
This year looks like the year lots of cool car people are going away.
Interesting discussion, isn't it?
Well, chassis number 4713GT did come with Pininfarina designed body. It was based on the 330LMB body; still built by Scaglietti.

Dear Jessie,
I do believe the car at 4'17'' is the Fiat Dino Spyder and not as stated a 124 or 128 Spyder.
Jessi, Lang.

Kudos Jessi !! = - ) Love you !!
great man
What model is 1:13-1:14 ?
Think its a 330 GT 2+2, search 330gt Harry Metcalfe for a closer look.
Hey Jessi, Nice show. As for important figures to be remembered for their contributions to the automotive industry, you can't leave out Lee Iacocca, Bob Lutz, and Elon Musk. God Bless Your Soul Pininfarina...
Worked with Pininfarina to produce the Fiat Coupe and has been working with BMW since.
What is the car at 3:52
Ian Callum for Jaguar and Aston Martin. Chris Bangle for Fiat Barchetta and many BMWs. Maybe Fisker for his work, especially for Fisker Karma.
The newer Ferraris are awesome especially the 458 Italia but i still love the F50
Jessi is an awesome host..
