I have very long hair. The ends were so dry and I haven't been to the salon in a year. Today I watched this video while attempting to cut my own hair. I was terrified at first, but I'm so happy I did it. This is by far the best video on how to cut your own hair. It's so simple to follow and your hair will look amazing.
Wow! I would never have the courage to cut my hair in layers if it was not for this video. You’re right, every time I go to the salon, they always cut my length which I hate!!! @@ns2187 what do you mean by so ? Layered is usually preferred by girls with thick hair because they're hair will feel heavy. Doing layered cut will reduce the weight
@@user-rf2ff6li8lLayers are also used to add volume to thin, flat hair. Long layers add more volume while short layers reduces the weight and thins down the bottom. So I just asked to the person who has already tried this tutorial.

Every stylist I went to always refused to do what I asked for especially layering... saying I had to cut my hair super short to get the layers I wanted.. started doing my own hair and never went back cheaper and I get what I want lol
UGH, I just went through this today. I asked for a few shorter layers because my hair is so heavy and thick, and she told me no. When she was done, it literally just looks like everything is the same length. So now I’m on TH-cam 🤣
Ugh I’ve had SO many experiences like this, where I ask a stylist to do something and they say “no it won’t look good,” and I’m like. Um. This is *my* hair, ya know.
Same for me! Whenever I asked for a layered haircut and I have thick hair, the hairdressers found different excuses not to! If they can't do their job, they gonna lose money while we are nailing it on our own at home

She has gone easy on hair, not done grave chopping of her hair, nor short fringes or blunt short cuts. So even if there might be errors if seen from professional angle, the end result looks smooth and well layered, especially after her last touches.

highkey did it on a whim an hour ago and its looks pretty good! just make just to straight cut well too blend, but if its too chunky, just go back in and thin out after.

As a hairstylist I can say this girl did it lol she kinda got me worried when she started cutting an inch below her guide but when she went back in and blended it came out perfect. Kudos for this girl 👌
Ok, I NEVER comment on youtube videos, but this was so helpful I felt I had to let you know. I just cut my hair, following your super clear instructions and it looks great. Thanks for skillfully, clearly and humbly empowering people to do things for themselves. In this case, cutting their own hair, but the confidence can translate to just about anything. Thanks again.
They can charge more money for long styles ...so you go in saying you just want a trim and they start saying they want to take more off, next thing you know they’ve charged $20 more for a long style rather than a trim
Guys if you have shorter, thinner hair, you may want to take larger sections! I accidentally gave myself “The Rachel” haircut. I actually love it, but that might not be the look you’re going for 😬

I hate having my hair cut. I've been using this video for 3 years and it hasn't let me down. I have thin/fine, straight Asian hair that has no texture. So this cut has been really good for me to have long hair without it weighing down and just sticking to my head. Thanks Sheetal xx

Just paid $300 at the salon asking for subtle V with long blended layers (super similar to this) along with a colour - ended up walking out with a blunt cut with no layers 🤣 it is cut well but I just don't understand why hairdressers NEVER do what you ask!!! I'll be trying this video next time, I also have straight fine/thin asian hair.
I have really thick hair and just did this...it came out really chunky...It's only hair and will grow back...guess i could get a shoulder length bob. I watched your video about 5 times before I did it. I probably shouldn't have taken so much hair from the top. Hair dressers do that to me ALL the time and I end up with a bob on top of my long hair. Anyway, your hair looks amazing!
My hair was too long for this video. I found that out half way in. I'd say it was about 7" longer than hers. I have to try to maintain that length with the rest and have a hair dresser fix it now. Glad it worked for your length though!
@@cynthiafernandez5250 oh no :( maybe try it again with thinner sections (not only 3 main cuts like she did-try maybe 7)? I thought that 3 seemed like not enough and was worried about chunkiness too but my hair is so much thinner than it used to be actually worked out perfectly for me. Back in the day no way.
@@vishalivashishat3313 I purchased a pair of hair scissors from Sally Beauty called Craft by Joe Well. They were kind of expensive but are very, very sharp. Made for hair. Don't try to use a pair of house scissors for this cut.
@@macadamianutball7534 I'm a hairdresser and I agree with you. I charge $45 most for a haircut and that's if its a hard one or long long hair. Don't know why people charge over $50-200. Ridiculous. I remember going to get a haircut for about $25 not even 5 years ago. Now, even for shoulder length, it's $60. It requires a lot of skill to train in all cuts, but still. Sometimes it's just robbery
Hi guys! Thanks for all the positive comments which prompted me to try this. I have been having a lot of hair fall, so wanted to cut my hair in this pandemic. I have really long hair, like down my thighs. So wanted to share some tips I thought of after trying this- 1. Cut longer than you think you should: Pretty self explanatory. You can always go shorter for adjustment purpose. 2. Do more layers: If you want to maintain the length of your hair opt for more layers. I did four. 3. Maintaining the equality of layers: Now when you have really long hair it's very difficult to keep track of one inch and if you are taking the hair from the right places. I used one side as a guide as much as possible. You can also try the finger trick, so you just cut your hair four fingers down your guide strand. I cut the last layer measuring with one side than doing the guide trick. Thank you for the video Sheetal! Super helpful!
So... this was a terrifying experience. But... for someone who has never cut their own hair it turned out surprisingly well and I am really pleased with it. Might do again for next time too

I had really bad dead ends my husband passed away December 7th 2020 I haven’t been taking care of myself so I just cut my hair like in this video and wow the best haircut I’ve ever had. This is the type of hairstyle I love my layers are nice and I got rid of those dead ends ❤️
I don't care what kind of scissors u used, terminology, etc... u spoke in understandable words to me and MOST of us aren't beauticians, and you got the job done. I probably would get annihilated by a chef if I used a carving knife instead of a chefs knife to cut tomatoes, but I still could get the job done beautifully. I'm going to try this and save myself $40. I'll be using a $30 pair of fiscar scissors to do it with. Bravo. Excellent results!

It’s 3 year later and I’m still doing this. My hair is very long now so I do every 3 inches from the guide instead of an inch . And looks amazing! Thank you!
My hair turned out perfect. Tip for thick hair -do two back sections on each side instead of one. Just remember to pull your guide hair from the previous section and it will work the same.

I'm a hairdresser and I still love your results. People being judgemental because you said second.. Third layer.. It's the way she's able to explain. Of course there's more than 3 layers and what matters is that you're happy with your hair.

Tell me about it... Been cutting my own hair for years and I had to cut it at a salon once because I had bleached my hair pretty hard and it was impossible to go home without cutting the ends, I ended up looking like an old Barbie doll that your 5 year old daughter messes up with and leaves in some wardrobe's corner. Sometimes "looking for a professional" isn't such a great idea...
Ok, so I just did this and it turned out really good, so thank you, I was tired of having quarantine hair lol. I will say though for anyone attempting to do this at home, if you hair is much longer than hers here, be prepared to lose some length to get it to look good. I was willing to lose it, but lost a good 3-4 inches more than I was hoping for (don't get me wrong it looks great) but my hair was also well down past my back which makes it hard to pull it out like this if it goes a lot longer than your arm can even reach. That being said, next time I go for a touch up or anything it will be a lot less difficult to pull off I think. I also changed the 1 inch between layers to about 2 inches to save some length which I think helped also, the layers did end up fairly close together so I probably could have gone for 2½ to 3 inches in between and still had great results. (or figured out how to add an additional layer somewhere in there). Good luck!

If you're letting your hair grow long it's best Not to go to a hair salon. I got my hair Cut off 4 to 5 inches when I told them to just cut the ends or just cut half an inch to an inch. I even show them what I wanted them to cut off with my finger and they still cut so many inches off my hair. 4 inches takes 8 months to grow on the average person. That's a long freaking time. I will NEVER go to a Hair Salon ever again in my life. I learned to trim my own hair.
Same! I don't trust anyone with my hair anymore. Same kind of thing, I said just a trim and then 4 inches would be gone. I am doing my own hair from now on.
@@kikilong7911 really?? I did it 2 times already and mine looks great. You can control you layer distances by how much angle you make when you pull the sections.

I carried around a picture of the hairstyle I wanted for FIVE YEARS!!! Did NOT EVER get the cut I wanted!! That was like 5-6 different cosmetologists!!! HUNDREDS of dollars!! What the hell do they teach these people?? The pic came from a makeover on Oprah, so I know it can be done - now I've lost the pic and just cut my own hair in layers that look better than anything I've gotten in a salon. Hell, spell check wanted to make it saloon instead of salon and I thought for a moment that I might have been better off at a saloon - at least I would have felt better! ;-D
I'm trying this right now. I have thick, wavy, curly, frizzy hair. I never blow-dry, flat iron nor curling iron , I only dye my gray from top to middle of hair so that I don't fry the ends and also looks ombre with out even trying. Question = how the hell are you able to part your hair like you do? I'm trying with a comb but you did it fantastically with your hands.

I have long, fine hair. I have a lot of hair yet still the strands are thinner. I used your technique for the first time today and I couldn't be happier!! It gave me so much volume and bounce! I cut a lot of hair off yet I still have my length and it looks fuller than ever! THANK YOU!!
As a hairstylist the only thing I'd recommend is a better set of shears so your hair doesn't fray when cutting but you basically have what we do down! You did a good job
I taught cosmetology, and I agree. Get yourself a pair of hair shears and see for yourself the difference. The only thing I don't care for is the layers in the back, they do not blend. You can take your original guide from the front and comb your hair from the back to the top of your head and match it up and cut. There's another way too, when I was in the salon that we had a wella class, and they showed us and easier way to achieve a similar look. You put your hair in a pony tail on the top of your head, establish a desired length and cut across. It's a 180 cut, or an umbrella cut.you'll get more layers and they won't be so disconnected.
frankie berry , do you cut straight across or do you cut at a 45 degree angle? I watched a video with a girl who cut layers exactly how you're saying to do it & she said once u smooth the ponytail down use your fingers to decide where you want to cut, then she proceeded to cut at like a 45 degree angle and then went back and smoothed the same hair out (still in the ponytail) & cut straight up into the hair with the scissors to make a more "salon type finish" & not so blunt/choppy looking at the ends I guess? But yea I wanna do the unicorn ponytail layer cutting (LOL) but I'm just not sure how to cut it once it's in the ponytail. Thanks !
frankie berry i know this is an old comment lol but I just came across the video and your comment and would like your expert opinion as she seemed to be cutting it at an angle. I don't want to mess my hair up. As vain as it may sound I love my hair lol. It's so long and thick and beautiful (I also really never use any heating products on it so that helps I'm sure) I just dye it. Hopefully I get an answer though! I really want to do my hair like that. Also, i don't have a "full size" pair of hair cutting scissors but I do have "hair trimming scissors" , will these work for the "unicorn ponytail layer cut"? Instead of straightening, you can also have wet hair so its basically straight (plus it cuts so much cleaner, it doesn't get everywhere because it's not as light and floaty!) and hangs evenly. But straightening is a new method I've never thought of! I am definitely doing this method tomorrow night! Then I'll be ready for my dye sesh 🙂

Same here Rubie . I never had that leaving the salon elated feeling . Ever . I would leave the hair dressers in a state of mild trauma . Go to a department store. Run to the toilets in there and muss up my hair . The day came when I decided never to visit a salon again . 😁👍Stay happy .
Any length of hair can be layered. My husband likes his entire head short, numbers 3 to 1. Except for his bangs that he keeps long and styles. I can layer that bit of hair as well as having a uniform length going along his entire head of hair. That's why he stopped going to the barber. He gets compliments from gay men on his haircut as well as women. It's funny when the women compliment him because he replies with a smile. "Thanks. My wife cut it!" The look of dismay on their faces is to die for. But I sure as heck like the compliments of my handiwork.
@@christins.1481 thats so interesting!! i have a bit of a phobia of hairdressers and things so my mum has been trimming my hair since i was about 14 (im now 20 and still refuse to go) purely because of the stylist i had when i was 14. she told me she couldnt layer my hair at all because it was to thin and she was disgusted at how long my hair was! the way she acted made me hate my hair and the length of it. i've always had really long hair, down to my bottom. Layers is something ive always wanted to give my hair more volume and texture! its so nice hearing that literally ANY length and thickness can be layered. in the end your comment made me decide to follow this video (thankyou thankyou thankyou) and now ive never felt more refreshed!!!
@@stephanieskinner4180 I honestly hate that so many hair dressers want to cut hair short to a boy cut. Not saying it's a bad thing. But the boy hair cut isn't the answer to all hair cuts. Then people always say they're professionals. If they were professional, they wouldn't solely stick with "short" haircuts. My husband is balding right in the middle of his and so I'm keeping the back part of his longer so it can be combed forward which acts as the filler and giving the illusion his hair isn't thinning. The very top of his head on his bangs have to layered, then going back is a fade. It's a mixture of everything. So, believe me. I'm fading and layering with short, thin hair. It can be done. You just have to improvise and give the illusion of having a full head of hair. Glad my comment helped. Just follow DIY videos like this and play around with your hair.
Yeah I don't think layers would look nice with my super straight hair. I just don't have the energy to make it curlier or bouncier so that layers would be emphasised prettily. I've had layers but it was such a long time ago that I don't even remember how my hair looked.
I used this tutorial to cut my hip length hair and they came out significantly short but still it looks incredibly beautiful and voluminous. I love this cut!
Do you mind me asking how you did that? My arm is too short for the length of my hair, so I can't hold it up diagonal like that. Any tips are very welcome.
@@EllaGreenn try tying your hair in a rubber band while holding your hair diagonally. Then take that rubber band and pull it to the end where you want to cut your hair, and then you can just pull your hair close to you within arms reach and cut it. I hope this makes sense. ❤️
It is possible. They're just too lazy to do it, because it does a number on you arms if it's lengthy. Long for them is a little past shoulder length. Mine is to my bottom and they would have to go way up and to the sides cut it right.
I have super long hair, and in order to have volume, it NEEDS layers. Every single time I have gone to a salon, the want to get chop happy! I haven't been in forever because I do not trust them, but need my layers....so doing this!!!
Those scissors though, Girlfriend! You should really invest in a pair of professional hair shears. You'd be surprised what a difference they make in the finished result.

I’m ripping it out by the hand fuels in my sleep it gets stuck in car windows & in my sleep I pull it out & I usually wear a braid ? I’m gonna do it just little by little. Yours looks professional. Same for me! Whenever I asked for a layered haircut and I have thick hair, the hairdressers found different excuses not to! If they can't do their job, they gonna lose money while we are nailing it on our own at home

That's what I thought too but I went for it. Was very very careful, best thing I did was cutting a tiny bit at a time until I liked the way it looked!
highkey did it on a whim an hour ago and its looks pretty good! just make just to straight cut well too blend, but if its too chunky, just go back in and thin out after.

Guys if you have shorter, thinner hair, you may want to take larger sections! I accidentally gave myself “The Rachel” haircut. I actually love it, but that might not be the look you’re going for 😬

Just paid $300 at the salon asking for subtle V with long blended layers (super similar to this) along with a colour - ended up walking out with a blunt cut with no layers 🤣 it is cut well but I just don't understand why hairdressers NEVER do what you ask!!! I have really thick hair and just did this...it came out really chunky...It's only hair and will grow back...guess i could get a shoulder length bob. I watched your video about 5 times before I did it. I probably shouldn't have taken so much hair from the top. Hair dressers do that to me ALL the time and I end up with a bob on top of my long hair. My hair was too long for this video. I found that out half way in. I'd say it was about 7" longer than hers. I have to try to maintain that length with the rest and have a hair dresser fix it now. Glad it worked for your length though!

I thought that 3 seemed like not enough and was worried about chunkiness too but my hair is so much thinner than it used to be actually worked out perfectly for me. Back in the day no way.

@@vishalivashishat3313 I purchased a pair of hair scissors from Sally Beauty called Craft by Joe Well. They were kind of expensive but are very, very sharp. Made for hair. Don't try to use a pair of house scissors for this cut.
Looks like that's what she is using (house scissors) but I wouldn't recommend using them either.

I remember going to get a haircut for about $25 not even 5 years ago. Now, even for shoulder length, it's $60. It requires a lot of skill to train in all cuts, but still. Sometimes it's just robbery

Hi guys! Thanks for all the positive comments which prompted me to try this. I have been having a lot of hair fall, so wanted to cut my hair in this pandemic. I have really long hair, like down my thighs. So wanted to share some tips I thought of after trying this-
1. Cut longer than you think you should: Pretty self explanatory. You can always go shorter for adjustment purpose.
2. Do more layers: If you want to maintain the length of your hair opt for more layers. I did four.
3. Maintaining the equality of layers: Now when you have really long hair it's very difficult to keep track of one inch and if you are taking the hair from the right places. I used one side as a guide as much as possible. You can also try the finger trick, so you just cut your hair four fingers down your guide strand. I cut the last layer measuring with one side than doing the guide trick.

I had really bad dead ends my husband passed away December 7th 2020 I haven’t been taking care of myself so I just cut my hair like in this video and wow the best haircut I’ve ever had. This is the type of hairstyle I love my layers are nice and I got rid of those dead ends ❤️

I don't care what kind of scissors u used, terminology, etc... u spoke in understandable words to me and MOST of us aren't beauticians, and you got the job done. I probably would get annihilated by a chef if I used a carving knife instead of a chefs knife to cut tomatoes, but I still could get the job done beautifully. I'm going to try this and save myself $40. I'll be using a $30 pair of fiscar scissors to do it with. Bravo. Excellent results!

It’s 3 year later and I’m still doing this. My hair is very long now so I do every 3 inches from the guide instead of an inch . And looks amazing! Thank you!
My hair turned out perfect. Tip for thick hair -do two back sections on each side instead of one. Just remember to pull your guide hair from the previous section and it will work the same.

Tell me about it... Been cutting my own hair for years and I had to cut it at a salon once because I had bleached my hair pretty hard and it was impossible to go home without cutting the ends, I ended up looking like an old Barbie doll that your 5 year old daughter messes up with and leaves in some wardrobe's corner. Sometimes "looking for a professional" isn't such a great idea...
3 years later, this is still my go to haircut, but now with curtain bangs too. Very low maintenance style.
Ok, so I just did this and it turned out really good, so thank you, I was tired of having quarantine hair lol. I will say though for anyone attempting to do this at home, if you hair is much longer than hers here, be prepared to lose some length to get it to look good. I was willing to lose it, but lost a good 3-4 inches more than I was hoping for (don't get me wrong it looks great) but my hair was also well down past my back which makes it hard to pull it out like this if it goes a lot longer than your arm can even reach. That being said, next time I go for a touch up or anything it will be a lot less difficult to pull off I think. I also changed the 1 inch between layers to about 2 inches to save some length which I think helped also, the layers did end up fairly close together so I probably could have gone for 2½ to 3 inches in between and still had great results. (or figured out how to add an additional layer somewhere in there).

If you're letting your hair grow long it's best Not to go to a hair salon. I got my hair Cut off 4 to 5 inches when I told them to just cut the ends or just cut half an inch to an inch. I even show them what I wanted them to cut off with my finger and they still cut so many inches off my hair. 4 inches takes 8 months to grow on the average person. That's a long freaking time. I will NEVER go to a Hair Salon ever again in my life. I learned to trim my own hair.

The pic came from a makeover on Oprah, so I know it can be done - now I've lost the pic and just cut my own hair in layers that look better than anything I've gotten in a salon. I have thick, wavy, curly, frizzy hair. I never blow-dry, flat iron nor curling iron , I only dye my gray from top to middle of hair so that I don't fry the ends and also looks ombre with out even trying. Question = how the hell are you able to part your hair like you do? I'm trying with a comb but you did it fantastically with your hands.

I tried it, it worked great. The length is still here, and the hair is beautifully layered. It took me 10 minutes tops.
As a hairstylist the only thing I'd recommend is a better set of shears so your hair doesn't fray when cutting but you basically have what we do down! You did a good job

I taught cosmetology, and I agree. Get yourself a pair of hair shears and see for yourself the difference. The only thing I don't care for is the layers in the back, they do not blend. You can take your original guide from the front and comb your hair from the back to the top of your head and match it up and cut.
There's another way too, when I was in the salon that we had a wella class, and they showed us and easier way to achieve a similar look. You put your hair in a pony tail on the top of your head, establish a desired length and cut across. It's a 180 cut, or an umbrella cut.you'll get more layers and they won't be so disconnected.

I watched a video with a girl who cut layers exactly how you're saying to do it & she said once u smooth the ponytail down use your fingers to decide where you want to cut, then she proceeded to cut at like a 45 degree angle and then went back and smoothed the same hair out (still in the ponytail) & cut straight up into the hair with the scissors to make a more "salon type finish" & not so blunt/choppy looking at the ends I guess? But yea I wanna do the unicorn ponytail layer cutting (LOL) but I'm just not sure how to cut it once it's in the ponytail. Thanks !
frankie berry i know this is an old comment lol but I just came across the video and your comment and would like your expert opinion as she seemed to be cutting it at an angle. I don't want to mess my hair up. As vain as it may sound I love my hair lol. It's so long and thick and beautiful (I also really never use any heating products on it so that helps I'm sure) I just dye it. Hopefully I get an answer though! I really want to do my hair like that. Also, i don't have a "full size" pair of hair cutting scissors but I do have "hair trimming scissors" , will these work for the "unicorn ponytail layer cut"? Instead of straightening, you can also have wet hair so its basically straight (plus it cuts so much cleaner, it doesn't get everywhere because it's not as light and floaty!) and hangs evenly. But straightening is a new method I've never thought of! I am definitely doing this method tomorrow night! Then I'll be ready for my dye sesh 🙂

*1. Get hair like that.*
Any length of hair can be layered. My husband likes his entire head short, numbers 3 to 1. Except for his bangs that he keeps long and styles. I can layer that bit of hair as well as having a uniform length going along his entire head of hair.
That's why he stopped going to the barber.
He gets compliments from gay men on his haircut as well as women. It's funny when the women compliment him because he replies with a smile.

My husband is balding right in the middle of his and so I'm keeping the back part of his longer so it can be combed forward which acts as the filler and giving the illusion his hair isn't thinning. The very top of his head on his bangs have to layered, then going back is a fade. It's a mixture of everything.
So, believe me. I'm fading and layering with short, thin hair. It can be done. You just have to improvise and give the illusion of having a full head of hair.

Yeah I don't think layers would look nice with my super straight hair. I just don't have the energy to make it curlier or bouncier so that layers would be emphasised prettily. I've had layers but it was such a long time ago that I don't even remember how my hair looked.

I used this tutorial to cut my hip length hair and they came out significantly short but still it looks incredibly beautiful and voluminous. I love this cut!
Do you mind me asking how you did that? My arm is too short for the length of my hair, so I can't hold it up diagonal like that. Any tips are very welcome.
@@EllaGreenn try tying your hair in a rubber band while holding your hair diagonally. Then take that rubber band and pull it to the end where you want to cut your hair, and then you can just pull your hair close to you within arms reach and cut it. I hope this makes sense. ❤️

It is possible. They're just too lazy to do it, because it does a number on you arms if it's lengthy. Long for them is a little past shoulder length. Mine is to my bottom and they would have to go way up and to the sides cut it right.

I have super long hair, and in order to have volume, it NEEDS layers. Every single time I have gone to a salon, the want to get chop happy! I haven't been in forever because I do not trust them, but need my layers....so doing this!!!

I’m ripping it out by the hand fuels in my sleep it gets stuck in car windows & in my sleep I pull it out & I usually wear a braid ? I’m gonna do it just little by little. Yours looks professional. Ive been a hair stylist for 20 years and we just moved out of state and was so scared to have someone cut my hair who I wasn't used to, so I did this and my hair looks AWESOME
