I watched Brad Mondos tutorial, cut it exactly the same way he showed, and I have to say that I haven't had such good layers since I was 18. I have thick hair, so I've always had my hair layered. I'll never go to another salon again. It's the butterfly cut for me, for life. I have naturally curly hair. Its more wavy than curls, but this cut is the beess knees.
My front layers are too blunt and don't have layers in the back. I have a wide head so the top is kinda flat. So the apex line put more hair to the front pony. Maybe it'll look better when my hair dries and curls up. Idk
@#ONPASSIVEpro Lara It doesn't make your hair look even thinner? I have never cut my own hair (other than trims) and I'm always so tempted. I'm just nervous that my hair will look even thinner
I was tired of my long hair and decided to follow Brad's step by step. I thought I would regret cutting so much, but I’m honestly obsessed. I’m never going back to a salon
Sorry don't already like this videos she looks like she's making everything too complicated making it look like wavy hair is this difficult but I seen it done before in other ways and it looks beautiful but this is too complicated so this video did not do it for me sorry😮!!!!???
@@angelitaalonso8195no offense, but if you found this very simple video “too complicated” I would highly recommend not touching your hair. Additionally, she very clearly stated that the viral version of the cut was only good for wavy and straight hair. If your hair isn’t curly, then why are you here?
I LOVE getting a demonstration of the results of trendy haircuts on curly or wavy hair. It is my experience that MANY stylist do not understand curly hair. They almost always cut too aggressively not taking into account how much it will shrink up. Even if you tell them you want a tiny, tiny amount trimmed-like 1/4 inch, they default to 1/2 inch at a minimum. With my last haircut, which was too much, I decided I would cut my own hair from now on as much as possible. (I was a licensed cosmetologist in the 90’s). I feel very rusty on all of it but can get the gist very quickly when I watch your videos. My stylist admits very few of her clients want to keep their curls or waves. Because of that, there is no incentive to learn to cut and style curly hair like in the 70’s and 80’s when perms were very popular. Anyway, thank you very much! You are a lifesaver!
You are correct they do not teach how to cut curly hair in school everything we know on curly hair is by practicing it on people that have curly hair or on our own hair like stylist in video. Best of luck to you in the diy haircuts.
I have only been to a 'professional' I think twice in my life. Two different shops, two different 'pros', years apart. Neither of them listened to what I told them I wanted done with my hair. It ended up awful. I was a kid when I had both experiences. I have never been back to anywhere. I am still too uneasy to go to a new place, even though I really want to get my hair cut & it's not something I can do on my own so I just do the closest I can on my own. It makes me angry, they are being paid to do as the client requests, not to make up whatever they want as if it's just another school project on a mannequin head. The only time they should do whatever they want is when the client actually tells them to do whatever they want.
I FINALLY FOUND a hair stylist that cut my hair exactly as I want it. I have very very thick curly hair. If I had seen this tutorial before I went to Becky, I probably would have tried this.
"Thinning shears, we don't use those here". God bless you for that! Everytime a stylist has whipped those out my hair got ruined. Some gave me a great cut and then would say, "I'm just going to blend it" and it was game over. Those simulate the effect of broken off, uneven hair and give you flyaways. I do not allow anyone to use them on me after several bad experiences and i will literally jump out of the chair if i see them anywhere near me lol. Beautiful cutting here!❤
I'm from the 70s. Born 1959. We did this cut with NO rubber bands. And yes, called a different name. I am a retired Hair Dresser. So funny watching all the "new" cutters rename an old style... but hey! It's all good. Still fun. Still wks. Thanks for making this silly. And you are so correct in the fact- most ppl don't understand curly or extra thick locks.
I love that you mentioned fine curly hair! People seem to think it doesn't exist. It does lol. My mother and younger siblings have thicker curls, but I inherited my dad's fine hair with my mom's curls. I've spent my life in long French braids because it dreadlocks, and most products for curls are way too heavy for my fine hair, leaving it looking greasy.
I have the same problem! My hair is fine, but wavy to curly. I gave up on it years ago, but weirdly enough head & shoulders conditioner, left in with little or no rinsing, isn't too heavy, & my curls bounce right up, & it doesn't frizz! Good luck with your hair adventures!
@amandamills6181 I found that aveeno fresh green blends shampoo (their thickening one in the green bottle) leads to some lovely curls, and as a bonus you smell like an actual herb garden, like rosemary and sage lol. I bought 3 different types on a whim. The blackberry is for color and I don't see a difference in my hair, the fresh garden thickening one gives my hair light weight curls, and the plant protein one leaves it super soft and silky, so I usually use that if I'm planning on braiding it back or straightening
@eme3127 honestly I twist my hair up into a bun and wrap a silk scrunchi around it when I sleep now and I haven't gotten the knotting up since, but it can mess with the curl pattern since my hair is so fine. Not always, but I wouldn't do it the night before some event or something until you figured out how your hair acts doing it
Me too! I also have to brush mine everyday because it tangles so easy no matter what I do. I see people refreshing their styles for a few days and I wanna cry.
I had the Farrah haircut back in the 70's when it first came out. Because I was fighting my curly hair texture, and only used a blow dryer and small round brush, it always ended up looking like a bushy bowl cut with weird flips.😆 I think the pigtail cut is the best ever, and looks FABULOUS, and lo and behold!!!! I can do it myself. All thanks to my favorite TH-cam hair guru!!!💜😘💜😘💜😘💜😘💜😘
From someone who took hairdressing school years ago, I can see the grid I always have in my mind when mapping out and creating a cut through watching your tutorial. Your vision of this cut makes perfect sense in achieving uniformity. I have been doing the same ponytail haircut where I put it all in a ponytail in the lower back and cut. Now to grow my hair and try something new. Thank you for better options. I adore thé Jennifer Aniston short and highlighted face pieces. It frames her perfectly.
You are the best! Let me just say this, I don’t EVER comment on any videos. This might be my very first comment in my life…I must however express how I feel. I was so sad looking at my hair lately. I was missing the round, layered look I used to have. …It is back now! After first few minutes of watching your video, I knew you know what you are talking about (and I am no expert). I haven’t been to any hairdresser for years because when I moved, I just didn’t trust anybody to do my hair. At the same time, I am not afraid to use the scissors. So, I listened to you…I followed your instructions as well as I could. And with a help of one hair tie, dull scissors and a tiny mirror to see what’s going on in the back, I did it, and…I LOVE MY HAIR AGAIN! I see layers that connect, not a choppy mess. I have a round and voluminous silhouette! Thank you so so much!
I just 'Mondo'd' my hair last night but in 3 sections and it turned out brilliant. Would I do this cut if I had very curly hair, I dont think so. As for 'trusting a professional', the amount of times Ive told the stylist how I want my hair and they just say 'sure sure', then they do what they want, not what I want, has been pretty much nearly every time... then have to pay a fortune for something I dont like and I couldve done that myself at home. This was so easy to do and I love it and will use Mondo's method again.
My hair is very curly and I've used Mondo's technique very successfully. Her technique involves far too much intricacy unless you're somewhat experienced and I don't have the time or patience to learn, especially since I've found an easier method that works so well for me. I love Brad's method. Simple, 10 minutes and I'm done and my hair looks and feels great! I might add that she started off saying she was going for the "round" shape but in the end she had the "bell" shape which she initially spoke against, and then made the comment that she'd trim it into the round shape later. That indicates that even after all that instruction she didn't get it right.
I really like that you will demonstrate cuts on your own hair so people can see how the process looks if they were doing it on their own hair instead of seeing it from the perspective of doing the cut on a mannequin or another person.
After having a few bad experiences with salons basically looking at my curly hair & turning me away because they didn't know what to do with it, I just prefer to do my hair at home lol. I love your tutorials that are so detailed and easy to follow at home.
Same, I’ve paid 200 plus for salons and walked out and not like it. My hair texture can be challenging might as well just figure out how to do it myself.
I've never had a haircut I liked. My hair is fine and wavy so I don't think it should be that difficult but alas. I saw a video a few years ago for a "unicorn cut" and I haven't looked back. I won't say that it's perfect but at least I haven't spent $50+ on a haircut I despise.
I have very fine, thin and very straight hair and have had so many stylists not know how to cut properly and every scissor cut reveals their errors. I thought maybe they got proficient at cutting thick hair with possibly waves, but apparently not!
@@tastx3142 apparently a good stylists is hard to find. Especially where I live in the country. The affordable places are terrible and the decent places charge an arm and a leg for the basics 😭
This was so much help! My sister called up with her s-curls, thick, thick, thick, wanting it gone! "Will you cut my hair?" It felt like a big risk, but I watched a handful of your videos, took a deep breath and began. We followed along with this one. It was a success. She left very happy and I felt like I helped her instead of ruining her hair. Thank you!!
THANK YOU MELL for saving me from trends! This got very technical very quickly and I found myself tuning out not even 10 minutes in. It made me realize that if I can't spend 10 minutes figuring out how to properly shape my hair, I should probably just go pay someone who knows what they're doing 😅
I'm afraid I'm going to have peace out, too, lol. Cutting the bangs "with tension in the other* direction"? "No ponytail, I'll just use my fingers as a 'guide'"..Easy for her to say, haha! She's a professional.
Maybe it's just me but I don't see this as shade. I love Mell and Brad they're both positive and funny, with fabulous personalities, good hearts and they both do good work. They have their individual strengths and differences but that's not a bad thing. Brad's admitted that he doesn't specialize in curly hair and tends to recommend based on what he knows which is straight to wavy hair almost as many times as he's admitted that he prefers blonde... and that's okay! When I watch Mell, I know she's usually not talking about straight hair techniques too. My hair is in between so I have to find my way thru both of their advice. Brad tried to improve on the wolf cut in his own way and it works great for certain textures and lengths. Today, Mell put her twist on it for the curly community, that's exactly what they both should do and I'm here for it! Much love to both of 'em and don't forget Seester. 💛
I just did the butterfly to my head and it worked fine (I have wavy ringlets). I think if I want a more refined look, this will help a lot. Thanks Mel and Amanda! :)
Thank you sooooo much for addressing the curly hair side of this trend before too many unknowing “curlies” make the mistake of trying to do this cut and ending up regretting it. Because we all know how long it takes for curly hair to look like it’s grown back out😞. You have definitely helped me to confidently cut my own curly hair and it looks amazing.😊 thank you.🙏❤
When I was a teenager in the 70s a family friend would cut her own hair with just one pony tail at the apex of her head. She was super successful business woman who didn’t want to spend the time a hair salon so she would bend over, gather the pony tail with hair hanging down towards the ground, and cut! Her hair always looked great. I was too chicken to try so no layers for my long straight hair. Thanks for sharing the tutorial. Your hair is beautiful!
I have wavy/curly hair and I discovered that a combination of the butterfly cut and the pigtails cut works great for me. The butterfly cut creates the layers I want and the pigtails cut allows me to take more length off (especially in the back) and connect the front and the back in a great way.
@@chickpea734 I basically do two haircuts. I start with the butterfly cut to get some layering. But since it doesn’t take much length of in the back, I do the pigtails cut afterwards. It also helps to get a smooth transition from the front to the back so it doesn’t look like a mullet. I hope that helps :)
I came to this video after the Mondo video left me crying over my haircut. This 100% works on fine hair if you cut precisely- even better than the Mondo video because you clean the transition! It is my go-to every 3mo for nearly a year since you posted and I don’t even need thinning shears with it! Please keep up videos like these- you’re helping us girlies so much 💗
I did the wolf cut and the butterfly cut. I fixed my hair with your pig tail cut. Stylists never give me the texture that I want and crave in my hairs. I would LOVE more of these kinds of tips. Like What to ask for if you want the wolf cut or what to ask for if you want the pig tail cut. It's so amazing and helpful because I never know what to ask for. Love you. Also, you changed my life. Bless you for what you do.
Yalllll! I had never cut my hair before and I tried this tutorial out for my own first ever diy hair cut. AND I CANT EXPRESS HOW PLEASED I AM WITH THE RESULTS! THANK YOU MELL for the super comprehensible and entertaining tutorial (and for stopping me from doing it the wrong way)!! I have wavy long, thiccc hair and this cut took off so much weight while keeping the length and giving so much dimension. ❤
So after watching your video several times, I hyped myself up enough to cut my hair myself and it turned out really fun!!! I also jumped into dying it too and altogether I'm really proud of myself! Thank you for posting videos like this, it really does help ☺️
I’m glad she’s trying to stop people from butchering their hair for a style who is not for everyone. Trying to simplify a complicated cut just for the sake of going viral is messed up. Thank you Mel for explaining it and yours looks 🔥. It’s not for me because of my length and texture so nope to that.
I cut it exactly how all the videos show it & my layers came out gorgeous. My hair type is mixed between partially straight & partially curly. Best layers I've EVER had. My hair feels light & fluffy. Absolutely love it. Ponytail in front/ponytail at the apex.... Perfect instruction.
04:09 Time stamp for me so I don’t give myself this haircut. This. I needed this. Brutal honesty to avoid regret, frustration and new curse words added to my vocabulary. Thank you. Also, love your personality and vibes.
👋I'm 62 and have been cutting my hair this way since 1976. Young lady's often comment on my hair and say they love it. I don't color or use products and heat on my hair. Never. It's always worked and has saved me retirement money😊
That's exactly what I thought of when I first saw ladies doing this. There are so many details to consider in order to achieve a good look with this cut. Great job on this tutorial. I have natural curly hair, and i appreciate your credentials!
If you like being exhausted like you claim go pay 150 for the butterfly haircut that’s what they charge here in Dallas 😂😂😂😂 I watched it 5x and cut my cousins after drying I had to tweak it but after doing a couple more pretty sure I got it😂😂😂
I have the absolute opposite of curly hair. I don’t even have a bend or any texture. I still learned so much from this video! I have been interested in this cut, but I don’t know how it will work on my hair type. Loved the bangs technique!
Thank you so much for this. The last three times I got a haircut they just didn't understand and I even took pictures with me. The last one got really close so I was happy enough, but even as a pro she did that thing to me you're talking about where the hair is less dense over the ears and the front and back look totally separated when it's over. I just did my own cut, playing your video and going step-by-step. It came out soooo good and it was so easy!! My hair has so much personality and I don't need anyone's help!! Thank you so much for this guide!! ❤❤
Genius! You did a GREAT job explaining like a pro in a way that anyone will be able to understand how to trim their own hair and achieve the desired result through proper sectioning and directing the hair. I'm a licensed cosmetologist hairdresser :) You have beautiful curls. Two thumbs up on a very good tutorial!
😅Holy Shite! I am going to have to do a full video just for you on what I am about to tell you (after possible broken foot heals) My mom was a hairstylist in the 50s-70s and totally cut her hair into the Fara Fawcett look. I still have the Original directions of my moms. She also taught me how to cut my hair when I was about 15/16 in the mid 80s. I have only been to a stylist about 10 times since then & still go home & recut it. So I just stopped going to stylists. I have tried different styles/cuts throughout the yrs on my straight to wavy now curly hair & keep going back to a combo cut from the 70s U shape at the bottom & added the layering of the 80s for my own type of cut. It is the U shape w/ 3 - 5 layered section with each in the same U shape. Then I take the front section or bang area ONLY together to cut straight across to be able to flip the hair from side to side. Result Cool Surfer Curly Hair. Yes I am 50 & still loving life!!!❤
I’m a licensed hair stylist too and your butterfly haircut is the one to follow. Unlike the original cut by Brad, your haircut connects the front layers with the back which is very important for the finished look. Good job!
That’s the thing, everyone loves hit it never looks good to me. Sure when they they style and curl it it’s fine, because curls tend to be good at hiding mistakes. But it looks very piece-y and choppy and the very short front layers look bad with the long layers, there’s no graduation between the layers. Would be better to go up instead of out to the front. That’s too much over directing.
@@potato-whiz I cut my hair like this when I wanted something like a hush cut. It needs that length with the short layers at the top. I‘d say for a hush cut it works amazingly.
@@rauchschwalbelp7693 they do. It didn’t just look choppy. I the back is long and uncut the front was short. That’s the nature of the cut. They do everything he said to do to a t. Nothing fixes it. There’s no saving a cut that’s two entirely differently lengths with no gradation. Professional stylists have said this too, it won’t look good. And it doesn’t. All yall that do it that think it looks good, I promise you it doesn’t
I wanted to do this haircut on my daughter but couldn't find a tutorial that I wanted to follow until I came across YOURS. I followed it and her hair came out looking GREAT! So much better than before the cut! Thank you for all the time you spend here helping us get the best at home hair possible. I would love for you to do layers for chin/shoulder length fine straight hair. I know that is not your hair type but maybe u could find a mannequin or something? That's my type hair and I would love to try cutting my own as well. Also highlighting at home. The salon has just gotten too expensive for me to be able to afford at the moment and its been about 8 months since I have been. I need a touch up for sure! ❤❤❤
I think this is perfect for long wavy or long wavy curly hair who wants to have long layers. I have been cutting my hair following Mell's pigtail cut (btw it's been a lifesaver. I cannot thank you enough!) but since my hair has grown out below my breast line, I have not been successful achieving long layers with the pigtail cut; my shortest layer was not short enough no matter how high I placed my pigtails. I almost attempted mixing unicorn and pigtail cuts but this method seems to make more sense. I'm def trying this!! Thank you always! ❤ from Korea!
After having my hair long and cut straight across for a couple of years I missed having the long layers. I tried the butterfly cut but I couldn't do it with two ponytails I had to do it with three. I absolutely love the results. My hair is not Curly it's definitely not straight it's what you would call wavy
@@savage_girl_07 I think it looks good without styling because of the layers the waves are more pronounced at the the ends. It falls quite nicely but I do like to pin it up at night and it gives it the extra curl
@@emptychair8141 one ponytail was right at the top of my head where he said to put one of them. The other one was middle of the forehead like the Unicorn as he said to do. And another ponytail was actually in the middle of these two
I don’t have curly hair but my hair is very thick and has like wavy straight texture and I found out very quickly that the techniques I’ve seen prior for the butterfly cut were not for my hair type. I did a lot of fine tuning to my cut after watching Mr Mondos tutorial. It’s still a little choppy just because I have a lot of thickness. Wish I’d seen your tutorial beforehand. I’m gonna go back in sometime later this week since I didn’t a very modest cut originally ( I had my reservations about the cut prior so I didn’t go ham). I can’t wait to see what a difference your tips make.
I can only imagine how many women you have saved from doing a horrible haircut! Thank you for all your expertise. I have straight somewhat wavy flat hair. But I really want like big curls. I love……. Curley hair and im loving yours wow ❤😍
Can you provide the ultimate guide to the short roundest voluminous haircut ? For curly hair of course 💅🏼 this is my dream haircut but I really wanna do it at home
Thank you for this. Your modification is way too complicated for me to do, but it convinced me to not try the original butterfly, unicorn, whatever myself. I’ve been soooo tempted because I need a cut so badly (I’m a senior “at risk” re COVID so it’s been about 3 years since a professional cut *gasp*). But what you say makes so much sense for my hair (I’m not as curly as you), my gut was telling me “don’t do it” since all the people doing it had long straight hair which isn’t me ha but I really really need a cut xo
Have you seen her pigtail haircut tutorial ? This one is complicated for me too. I’ve done the unicorn cut and it’s good, I tweak it a bit when it’s dry. I’m gonna try her pigtail one next, it looks very simple for me lol
I have tried so damn hard to find a GOOD tutorial with a side part! I know "side parts are totally out" according to some people but if I part my hair in the middle it makes my face look sooo damn long!! And I have a fairly long forehead as well so that makes it all the more worse as well. THANK YOU SO MUCH! For doing and having a side part. I think they are much more pretty and feminine in my opinion so even if I could pull off parting my hair in the middle I wouldnt choose to do so. Seriously! Thank you!!! It IS harder to do these things with a side part and it's just been so hard to find someone to know me properly. You are fabulous!!!
I'm SO SO glad I watched this before letting my mom cut my hair off 😂 She saw Brad Mondos video and was gonna cut my hair TOMORROW, I'm not letting her get any near my head lol Thank you, this was super informative!
I’m going to try the video you referenced at the end for my next cut! I have been doing something similar to this and dusting for the past year or two, but I really want a rounder shape again. Thanks for teaching us how to cut our hair! I have had the worst experience in salons. Only one stylist locally has ever known how to handle my hair, and I miss working next to her😭 she also worked in a shop that catered to mature ladies which in hind sight makes more sense than not, but I have been cutting mine and my husband and daughters hair exclusively and we have never been more consistent with our trims. Plus your styling process and scalp and hair maintenance has our hair so healthy, we look good and feel good and never have to leave home to get the results 💛
Even though this video was very educational, I don't trust myself with scissors anymore. I learned my lesson. Thankfully I found a great Curly hair salon near me so I will continue to go to the professionals. I love your videos. Thank you for helping girls like us love our natural hair.
I think Paul Watts did the orig butterfly cut DIY. I like it when the angles are explained because no 2 people have the same hair or head shape. In all fairness, Brad does address the disconnects in the final tweaking.
Amandaaa💕💕💕💕💕 our editting queen done did it again. Amanda tiny, small, minute request😁. if u have a second to spare😂, we need a Texture Tuesday 2022 montage blooper reel😁😁😁😁😁 After the premiere I thought to myself I butter-fly😁 to the comments to thank Mell for being a wonderful host as always. And remind her to keep hydrated. And if she's ever stressed do what we do, watch a ManesByMell. I hears she's quite a delight💜💜💜💜💜
I have very thick straight hair and somehow all of your critiques are also true for me lol… I just followed Brad Mondo’s tutorial and got the bell shape you discuss. I ended up cutting way more off my lower length to even it out and now my hair is so much shorter than I wanted. Kind of regretting this so posting in case it helps any other straight haired people!
as someone with curls, ive previously wondered abt this, but have been too skeptical to try it on myself considering how only women w straight hair do this. (plus its not the style i want currently haha) thank u for this!
I just found you and I’m in love with all the puns. I’m also a big fan of the advice because I can’t trust anyone to cut my curly hair. But the puns is what made it perfect 😂
Good assessment. The "butterfly cut" works easy peasy (with a little clean up around the face after) on straight and wavy hair. I've been doing it for 25 years to myself and never had a disaster. This "shortcut cut" is definitely not meant for tight curls though, which require more skill and precision to blend layers to lay properly.
It was called a 'Shag'! I know. I had my hair cut in a Shag most of my life. Until one day in the 90s when i went to a salon and asked for one. Nobody knew wettest i was talking about. They didn't even have pictures of one in their books. SOOOOO My friend and i gave something a try. We messed around with a few different ideas until we came up with this double ponytail method. IT WORKED!! My friend and I and all of our other Shag loving friends have been doing it ever since. If only we knew how popular this became 30 years later, maybe we could have....u mm.. no.. there was nothing we could do to patent this idea. It's called the "Shag" or the "Gypsy " or the "lioness " or "The Stevie Nick's hair cut". Oh and FYI This is CUT IS NOT MEANT FOR CURLY OR SHORT HAIR!
I appreciate you educating the masses!! I have 2 questions: 1. if you side-part but flip (I wear it to both the right and left), do you cut the bangs with a middle part? 2. Why comb out your curls instead of leaving them intact? Thanks for all you do 🙌
My mother went to hairdressing school. (Just did friends'/family's hair, not for a living.) She was allll about the thinning shears with my very thick curly/wavy/curly hair. Now, if I see them, I run the other way. 🤣🏃♀️
I have had do many bad experiences at the salons eith my curly hair, I just started cutting it at home. It was just basic trims at first. So I just cut my hair yesterday but I am going to review it again today to see if I need to correct anything and I am going to use your technic to correct any issues. Thank you for showing that us curlies need special technics for our curls.❤❤
As a retired hairdresser of 26 years, I was horrified when those ‘self-cut’ butterfly cuts showed up in my recommended ! Thank you so much for telling people the truth. I understood that some of us are more expensive for in salon cuts, but it is because we have the experience and we have spent a fortune (or I always did) on keeping up with education. You’re welcome clients. So thank you so much for showing and telling , how this doesn’t work on everyone. Sure some people are good at styling their own hair in order to hide the ridiculous cut they just did on themselves. I just don’t want to see people ruining their own hair , and unfortunately, then having to have a much shorter cut than intended and by a pro in order to fix their broken butterfly
You are the first hairstylist I see considering the hair part line and I love you for that 😭 My hairstylists always asume I wear it at the center so I go home with an unbalanced frame.
Thank you Mell I love you and your videos! They have really helped to bring my curls back to life and I don’t go to get haircuts I cut my own hair and always get compliments thanks to you ❤❤❤
Boy Mel! Thank you for this video! I really wish I had a stylist like you when I was a teenager (many moons ago!). Back then and until my mid thirties, I had corkscrew curls. My mother would take me to hairstylists who unfortunately were not professional enough to admit that they had absolutely no idea what to do with my hair and of course, being a teenager, reading magazines like Seventeen, where the girls all seemed to have beautiful, long feathering hairstyles, I would ask them to cut my hair like... I'd give them examples I'd cut from those mags and they'd AGREED to do what I'd ask, probably knowing there was absolutely no way my wish would be possible. I always left with something that I couldn't wait to grow out, lol! When I was older and paying with my own money, I'd actually justify tipping them by reminding myself how much time they had put into the brand new ALBATROSS on top of my head!!😂 I learned to appreciate the stylists who would turm me away from their salons, asking that I seek assistance from the stylists that did hair for black women. By the time I had learned to appreciate my curls, the unimaginable happened to me. After I had my first baby and lost the weight I had gained, all of my hair fell out! It took a few years, but when it finally grew back it was STRAIGHT! Not bone straight (thank goodness!), it had some wave, but my corkscrews were gone. That was over 10 years ago now and my curls never came back. However, my daughter has curly hair and now that I am subscribed to your channel, I hope she'll never feel like me or really any of these women who have left comments here, have previously! Thank you again and we'll continue to watch for anything new you put out! 🙏👍
Omg I swear it was fait !! My hair is just like yours! No one seems to know how to cut curly white girl hair. An was thinking of doing a wolf cut for 6 months now but wasn’t sure how it would look on curly hair. Your example the best I seen! Thankyou so much for showing me the light !!!!
The shade on Brad Mondo! 🤣 For real, you're 2 days too late for me. I did it. Never again, Brad! It took me 45 minutes to fix it. I ended up taking 10 inches off my length, but it turned out very similar to yours after employing techniques from some of your previous videos.
I just want to say I just found this channel and I’m so glad I did!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤ your energy is immaculate!!! Thank you for taking time to help educate and better prepare us curly haired bebes. And for teaching us with your beautiful hair!!!! The curls!!! The texture!!! The volume!!!! 🤌🏻🔥❤️😩👑
Not only was that informative and visually helpful but girl you are funny as hell. Love it. Plan on watching more of you 😂❤🤘 You executed that haircut on your big curly hair
I can't say enough fantastic things about this awesome girl.. lmao she's the best!!! No one knows hair like she does. She sacrificed for a cut she didn't even want, to stop crazies from doing BMs ridiculous gross tutorial cuts. . I cried.. I laughed.. I would never want a mullet. But the ponytail cut tutorial Mell created is my go to cut. I can do it myself soooooo easily thanks to Mell!!
My hair is stick straight and fine, so Brad’s method worked magic for me and allows me to do a blowout again with nice results … but oh my lord your hair is gorgeous and looks amazing. I’m soooooooo jealous.
Yes, the younger stylists know. What they don’t know is the feathered cut! I can not get anyone to do it!!! I have wavy hair that has its own personality. It’s not uniform like yours, it’s crazy! I had a guy that had been doing hair for over 30 years that could cut my hair like that perfectly! He had it to a science. No one else can do it! My guy retired, so now I’m back to hating what my hair does! My hair is long and everyone is afraid they’ll thin out the bottom too much. I tried to tell them how he did it but after a few times, I guess they don’t want to hear it. I’ve been doing hair myself for over 27 years. I just wish I could do my own.
OMG THANK U FOR THE WARNING DISCLAIMER. I WAS OVER THE URGE TO CUT THE MINUTE U WARNED ULTRA FINE HAIR! GIRL, I HAD TO TAP OUT BUT I FINISHED AND LIKED THE VIDEO ANYHOW! THANKS A MILLION! ❤
So I love this look. I have super thick long wavy hair and I was tired of how heavy my pony tails were and how I lost volume because it was just dense and heavy. I did a quite dramatic butterfly cut while keeping my length. It’s amazing for weight and general fussiness. Sadly I can’t get all my hair into a braid anymore 😂 my pros and cons list
Yaaaaaay! 👏🏻👏🏻 Great video! 🙌🏻 (I lived in Toronto when the "Rachel" haircut was the rage. I went to a high-end recommended salon att. (I should add here that I am very particular and NERVOUS of anyone cutting my fine curly hair (childhood trauma! TS! 😆).) He used thinning shears and gave me the Rachel cut ANYWAY! 😭😭🤮I almost left in tears and my hair never recovered to what it was! ☹️ I found a SUPER hair stylist once- Colin! A curly himself who ALWAYS did a FANTASTIC job! However, he moved away to Australia so now I cut it myself, like before... 🤞🏻🤞🏻 Your videos are SUPER!!!🥇🏆😊 I'm also wondering what your mum's hair is like? I'm in my 50's and I'd LOVE to see you do a haircut for mature fine curly hair? PLEASE?🙏🏻💕 Blessings to you and your viewers❣️ Happy Friday❣️💫✨ 🌛🌹🌜
The fact that you did this for us 🥲 thank you 😊 I also didn’t realize how technical cutting hair is. Very informative. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
This is why I love your channel. Thank you for addressing the different hair cuts that are out there and giving advice on why you do or don't want that cut. Scary stuff out there.😆
I watched Brad Mondos tutorial, cut it exactly the same way he showed, and I have to say that I haven't had such good layers since I was 18. I have thick hair, so I've always had my hair layered. I'll never go to another salon again. It's the butterfly cut for me, for life. I have naturally curly hair. Its more wavy than curls, but this cut is the beess knees.
Do you have rounded hairline ? Thinking about doing this 😭
Yes! Same here. I love my new haircut. I can’t believe it only took me 10 minutes. I was so nervous, but I love my results.
I am going to try Brad’s - it looks so easy. Good to hear it also works on wavy/curly hair!
No reason too anymore .. they have no clue anyway

I agree. Very few salons understand or know how to cut curly hair. So disappointing 😢
I cut my own naturally curly hair and get rave reviews.
I FINALLY FOUND a hair stylist that cut my hair exactly as I want it. I have very very thick curly hair. If I had seen this tutorial before I went to Becky, I probably would have tried this.
With my experience, most stylist don't understand fine hair. lol
I was always told back in the 70’s and 80’s it was called the gypsy haircut!
I'm about to do this 😮 I found this Video
Didn't we just bend over and cut upside down to get it like that?

I have a similar problem! My hair always dreadlocks in the back underside. Does anyone have recommendations for detangling products?
There’s no difference tho 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️😆
@@michellelablue7 Yes there is. Duh. lmao
That sounds horrible but at least they are turning you away. They could have go yeah we got this and ruin your hair while making you pay.
She made it WAY too complicated. Brad mondos method is very fool proof, he designed it that way.
Lol! His method is NOT foolproof!!!
I'm afraid I'm going to have peace out, too, lol. Cutting the bangs "with tension in the other* direction"? "No ponytail, I'll just use my fingers as a 'guide'"..Easy for her to say, haha! She's a professional.
Yeah my eyes started crossing. I'm like wtf happened to easy
@@GigglezZxoxit s not fool proof that's literally the whole point of this video. If you don't take curl patterns into account it can be a mess.
Yes, and afterall it wasn't Brad that created the butterfly cut. It was Paul watts
I have straight wavy hairish, should I follow this tutorial or brads?
Seester?
Well she can do like “butterfly cut for curly hair ” and not include brad though !
You have definitely helped me to confidently cut my own curly hair and it looks amazing.😊 thank you.🙏❤
Thanks for all of your hard work Mel! Saving countless people from disappointment!
This is what I do, too. A combo of butterfly & pigtail cut works great on my wavy hair.
can you explain what you mean by that?? (Im slow)
@@leniroxy thank u for replying!! im going to try this today
Do you cut it wet or dry?

It makes it all that much sweeter.

This came just in time. I was about to do the butterfly cut! I binged videos this morning 😂
@@potato-whiz He literally says you need to cut the edges if it looks choppy. If you can't listen, that's noone's fault but your own.😂
@@rauchschwalbelp7693 they do. It didn’t just look choppy. I the back is long and uncut the front was short. That’s the nature of the cut. They do everything he said to do to a t. Nothing fixes it.
How it looks without styling?? I have wavy hair too and usually don't have much time to style my hair.

Pigtail is good!!

From a fellow curly haired stylist, this is a great vid. People should be able to follow it easily & you’re right on about the angles etc
Even though this video was very educational, I don't trust myself with scissors anymore. I learned my lesson. Thankfully I found a great Curly hair salon near me so I will continue to go to the professionals. I love your videos. Thank you for helping girls like us love our natural hair.
This Texture Tuesday was VERY Shagadelic Baby!! 😂 Thank you for coming through and saving our hairs yet again Mell 🙏🏽
I think Paul Watts did the orig butterfly cut DIY. I like it when the angles are explained because no 2 people have the same hair or head shape. In all fairness, Brad does address the disconnects in the final tweaking.
I've done this cut on myself for years. Love it! Thanks Mell!
Amandaaa💕💕💕💕💕 our editting queen done did it again. Amanda tiny, small, minute request😁. if u have a second to spare😂, we need a Texture Tuesday 2022 montage blooper reel😁😁😁😁😁
After the premiere I thought to myself I butter-fly😁 to the comments to thank Mell for being a wonderful host as always.
This was so helpful and informative!! I am a side part girl also so that was a big help getting the front layers just right. Thanks a bunch!!
love that ur not stepping off brad's neck 💖 HAPPY TEXTURE TUESDAY
I missed this... Could you tell me the time stamp?
I just found you and I’m in love with all the puns. I’m also a big fan of the advice because I can’t trust anyone to cut my curly hair. But the puns is what made it perfect 😂
My mother tells me to brush out my curls like you have yours for the 💇♀️ haircut-🤯 I say- " Mom! I do not brush out my curls !" I look like a 🦁 lion
Love your attitude! Thanks for that tutorial on how to properly cut one’s own hair! Definately going to follow your advise!
Happy Texture Tuesday!! Love your diy haircut videos!! Much love and happiness!! Xoxo 😘
Me watching this video with straight hair but enjoying every second! I love your sense of humor and your skin is glowing!
Your bouncy shiny curls are GORGEOUS !!
I have 2 questions:
1. if you side-part but flip (I wear it to both the right and left), do you cut the bangs with a middle part?
2. Why comb out your curls instead of leaving them intact?
Thanks for all you do 🙌
My mother went to hairdressing school. (Just did friends'/family's hair, not for a living.)
She was allll about the thinning shears with my very thick curly/wavy/curly hair.
They have really helped to bring my curls back to life and I don’t go to get haircuts I cut my own hair and always get compliments thanks to you ❤❤❤
I finally have the haircut I’ve always wanted thanks to this video. I’m so grateful for you!!
I’ve been waiting for you to teach us this one! You are the bomb! I really like the round cut you show at 6:39. I want that cut so bad!💜
LOL, curly white girl hair, it's a thing!
The shade on Brad Mondo! 🤣 For real, you're 2 days too late for me. I did it. Never again, Brad! It took me 45 minutes to fix it. I ended up taking 10 inches off my length, but it turned out very similar to yours after employing techniques from some of your previous videos.
Is your hair curly too?
I just want to say I just found this channel and I’m so glad I did!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤ your energy is immaculate!!! Thank you for taking time to help educate and better prepare us curly haired bebes. And for teaching us with your beautiful hair!!!! The curls!!! The texture!!! The volume!!!! 🤌🏻🔥❤️😩👑
Living for dark-haired Mell 🖤
Happy texture Tuesday!! Thank you both so much for all that you do and bringing us so much joy and making us smile, love you ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I was thinking of doing it myself but after watching this, I’ll just let my stylist continue her great work!
I am _loving_ Mel’s darker curls 😍
This is the best layered haircut that connects perfectly, section by section. Which I have been looking for. For quite a while lol. Thanks Mell!! X
You are so welcome!🥹💓
I just take pictures to my stylist and let her do her thing😂 It’s worth paying a professional for professional results
(I lived in Toronto when the "Rachel" haircut was the rage. ☹️
I found a SUPER hair stylist once- Colin! A curly himself who ALWAYS did a FANTASTIC job! However, he moved away to Australia so now I cut it myself, like before... 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Your videos are SUPER!!!🥇🏆😊 I'm also wondering what your mum's hair is like? I'm in my 50's and I'd LOVE to see you do a haircut for mature fine curly hair? PLEASE?🙏🏻💕
Blessings to you and your viewers❣️
Happy Friday❣️💫✨
🌛🌹🌜
The fact that you did this for us 🥲 thank you 😊 I also didn’t realize how technical cutting hair is. Very informative. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
This is why I love your channel. Thank you for addressing the different hair cuts that are out there and giving advice on why you do or don't want that cut. Scary stuff out there.😆
I did it and it's amazing, Brad is a legend.
Thank you 1 year late from Paris 😊 when no-money-time is going, this diy cut is a style saver 🙏💫
So complicated. While I appreciate what you're laying down, some of us need the simple and effective Brad Mondo DIY's.
This is more for curly texture. He only described the cut for straight hair. So yes, it’s going to be more complicated because it’s harder.
