I've always used wood varnish to finish my wood blanks, and they've always turned out nice and are still going strong after years of use. I'm wondering what the advantage of using CA glue finish is over using varnish? Thanks!

Thank you for sharing that... I have CA glue that I purchased from you that doesn't need an activator. Once I apply it, should I just let it run on the lathe for a few extra seconds to dry?

CA doesn't "need" an activator... but you need to make sure it's cured and not sticky before applying more with a shop towel otherwise your shop towel could glue to the pen. Activator speeds up the whole process. Activator is cheap and has many more applications than just finishing pens.

At what speed are you rotating?

Nice video. Do you find best using thin CA for this activity? I haven't had much luck in using CA for a finish. Globs up, white hues or streaks, then have to take back down and try again. I used thin one time, then went back to medium but it is so hit and miss. I wish I could figure out how to do it so I get consistent outcomes.

Thanks! Yes, we always use thin CA for finishing because it soaks into the wood easily and makes it more durable. It's makes for a great finish but it does takes some practice to get it perfect. I apply very small amounts at a time and build up layers, using accelerator between each application.

@@WilliamWoodWriteLtd Thanks for sharing that. Others I have watched, some do use and some do not use accelerator but merely wait 30 sec to a minute in between. I do notice also that the humidity or lack thereof, makes some difference too. At least is for me when it gets under 40 degrees. Another thing that affects the outcome I think is the type of wood used too. I have noticed that woods that are more prone to splintering, end up being very rough until finely sanded, take more coats of the CA. I have started using the thin now, and the last couple of pens are coming out better.

I recently purchased this finishing kit from your store. Thanks for the informational video!
My only question left is should i be wet sanding with the micro mesh pads, or are they fine to use dry?

Great question! You can use micro mesh wet or dry. For a CA finish, we dry sand with micro mesh. Wet sanding with micro mesh is more ideal for finishing plastics and other non-wood materials.

Any idea why my pens get a few spots of dullness with no shine? The rest of the pen is nice and shine....just spots of hazy no shine. Would temperature in my garage effect the shine? any help would be awesome

some woods absorb the CA like a sponge which leads to dull spots. Try doing 5 coats of thin CA and 3 or 4 coats of medium CA.

I like the fact that the thin CA glue absorbs into the grains of the wood, but you need many more coats to get the finish you want. If you are getting dull spots it's likely because you have sanded through the CA finish. Once I have built up enough CA coats (it can end up a bit like an orange peel type surface) I always do light sanding until I achieve an consistent smooth and flat surface. If I notice any exposed wood (through the CA coats): I add a few more coats of CA. I also find that the Hut polish does an excellent job of taking to a perfect polish without excess sanding. (the highest I go with the sanding is 1000 grit before going to the Hut polish)

Near the end of the video, you say to "apply a top coat of HUT Ultra Gloss"... I'm pretty sure this product is just a polish and doesn't actually leave any residue. I finish my acrylic pens with it and no other product is needed; the polished acrylic shines on it's own.

Hey Chad! Yes, you're right. We use it to polish up the CA.
