Best pen turning/finishing vid I've found so far. Nice job. One thing most vids dont tell you and the reason I think CA is a mystery to new pen turners is that you wonder if applying the CA will yield a smooth finish before wet sanding and that's certainly not the case. Its easy to think that with all the applications of glue and hitting it with kicker that the rough surface would never be able to be sanded smooth without sanding thru the finish which isn't true. Thanks for this video.
Joey Nuggetz thank you and thank you for watching. I always have ripples or application lines on the CA before micro-finishing. You can sand in between CA coats but I find it more efficient to just sand at the end. You can also apply the CA with something other than paper towels as in plastic bags too, but I don't see a huge difference. Cheers my friend and happy holidays.

Love the symbols on the top and middle bands, but for some reason wish it wasn't there at the tip? The pen is still amazing and the wood is gorgeous. Great video!

Thank you! I made the magnetic hose bracket by attaching a hose adapter to a welding magnet (with a handle) with a metal hose clamp. It's worked great for me for a few years. I like being able to move my dust collections around my work. My lathe dust hood moves around as well. Thanks again.

Scott Walker Hi Scott, thanks for watching and your feedback. I get my kits from Pen State Industries and Craft Supply USA. When you buy your first kit you will need to buy the matching bushings. You may or my not have the drill bit sizes, depends on the kit and what drill bits you have. If you buy starter kits, they usually come with the bushings and drill bit for that kit. You’ll also need other supplies like sand paper, barrel trimmer, etc. Some of the supplies you can get by without, like a pen press. You can use a wood clamp instead. I did that for awhile before buying an actual press. Hope that helps. Take care.
Definitely one of the best pen videos out there!!! Great job and very good detail in description. I did have one question, since I'm a newbie. What were the degrees of Abernet pads that you used? And would any wet sanding pads work for those grit counts?
Mike Barratt thank you very much and thank you for watching my friend. The Abernet sheets I use are 120X, 180X, 240X, 320X, and 400X grits, then I use the micro mesh pads up to 12,000 grit. Cheers!
Mike Barratt oh, you could use any wet sanding paper for those grits, they are just not as good as the abernet sheets. The abernet has holes to reduce dust and heat. They also last a long time with wet sanding. Something also worth mentioning is, no matter what paper you use, you have to adjust your time sanding as the papers wear out. Hope that helps.

Great video and beautiful pen. After the initial sanding and then hand sanding to remove dust, it looks like you cleaned up the blanks. The video doesn't show that but I'm curious what you used. Thanks!!
James Christian thank you sir. Most likely I used rubbing alcohol (91%, hardly no water in it) to wipe down the blanks. I use that on almost every project I turn. It will also soak up some of the oil on exotic woods like this Bocote. Thanks for watching.

The wood I used was Blue Burl maple. I ended up sanding all the ca finish off and just polyurethane coating it and it turned out beautiful. But I'm interested in the ca finish.

Bill Tex thanks Bill! I use both flex and non-flex. I also use epoxy when I’m making batches of pens.

Gary Maynard Hi Gary, thank you and for your kind words, I appreciate it. I intentionally try to talk slower, and clearly on in-depth how to videos. As for the cloudiness, it can be one of the following in my opinion: bad CA glue(like old glue), low quality CA glue (not filtered well at the factory) or moisture in the wood that comes out after the glue is applied. Also, certain oils on the wood, can make the CA finish cloudy(as in type the of wood species), Some add oils to the wood before added a CA finish as in boiled linseed oil under the finish, and that can cause issues if it is not fully cured. CA finish looks really good but can you also apply laser engraving on pens with CA finish?
I never tried that, but if you laser engraved before applying the CA, that should work.

After searching for a "clutch pencil" online and talking to customer service, no such product could be located. Since this video is over 3 years old, it is possible they no longer make this kit. Just thought you may want to know in case this question comes up again.

kagnewmp12 Hi, thanks for subscribing. At normal speed, it would take about a hour. If I use epoxy for gluing the brass tube, I would wait a day for the glue to dry, which I sometimes do on batches. Thanks for watching.
@@spwoodart I am about to purchase a new Midi lathe just for pens because I just retired. I also inherited most of the wood from my Uncles wood shop of over 65 years. I have huge amounts of hardwood pieces of all species some labeled and some not. I have huge slabs of Walnut and others weighing up to several hundred pounds. I will never have to buy any blanks other than ceramic. I also found a very old and flawless 6 pound piece of black ebony 8 1/2" by 8 1/2" by 3 1/2" thick. I'm sure others would like to have my problem as it's gonna take countless trips to haul this stuff home.
kagnewmp12 nice, sounds like a great deal. Ebony is beautiful wood. You should be able to make a lot of items from that stock. Pens are really fun to make. I turn a lot of different items, but pens are always satisfying to make. Ive heard that slim line pens are for beginners, and a good pen kit to start with, but I still find them more difficult to turn than larger single tube pen kits. I always recommend starting on a gatsby style pen kit first. A wider pen kit with a single tube.

I used CA glue for the 1st time the temperature was probably around 50 degrees and all of a sudden I started seeing it Cloud up started peeling and cracking. Is there an optimum temperature for using CA glue?
Robert WrightJr. Good question. My shop is around 70 degrees all year with humidity at about 35%. Sounds like the wood was oily. What type of wood is it? Also, what brand of CA are you using? Did you use an accelerator? I've hear of accelerators clouding, but never pealing. I wouldn't think that the temp would effect the CA, other than the CA taking longer to dry because you can put CA in the freezer to extend the self life. Heat at about 300 degrees will melt the glue. Lol

Alfredo Rodríguez hi, ok. I get a lot of my tools from amazon. As for pens and pen supplies (kits) I use PSI (Pen state Industries) and Craft supplies. Both are online and I will post links below. You can make a pen without a wood lathe or even carve one. If you are looking at what I use then the bare basic tools that I would suggest to make a pen are: Wood lathe, Wood lathe tool set, dust mask, face shield, drill, drill bits, pen kit, pen mandrel, pen bushings, sandpaper, CA glue, wood, saw, and a finish. You could use hand tools. Hope this helps.

What kind of lathe do you have? And how do u like it? Thinking of buying one.
BigFoot #1 Hi, In this video I’m using a Pen State Industries 10” Lathe. Depends on what you want to turn. This was a great lathe with a lot of features as in variable speed. I have a much larger lathe now, but this PSI lathe was a great little lathe. It lasted me years before I sold it and it still worked great. I recommend a 12” swing, variable speed, and 1 hp motor for a smaller lathe, PSi sells a 12” model. You could turn a variety of pieces. Hope that helps.

Peter hi Peter, it depends on the situation. If I have the time and I am making a bunch of pens at once, then I would use epoxy for the tubes and let them sit overnight. I would glue the pen tubes all at once. Hope that helps.

Peter no problem, make sure you rough-up the pen barrels with the epoxy to add a mechanical bond. Epoxy will hold stronger than CA glue, but takes a day to dry before turning. Thanks for watching.

Nate Boyd it’s a PSI wall lathe. I would recommend, it has a lot of great features and a good price. I don’t have this lathe anymore, I upgraded to a larger lathe.

CA glue only goes cloudy if you apply it too thick
Roland Keys thanks for tip, I honestly never had an issue with CA going cloudy by thickness. I have had CA go cloudy from accelerator, and/or cheap CA glue. I mostly use CA glues that are really filtered in their creation process, but more expensive. I’ve been told that these CA glues are much more refined. Thanks for watching! Cheers!

mk73mhz hi, I believe you are talking about the tool I used to clean-up the glue from the tenon. It's called a Bedan tool and is a common wood turning tool. The one I used in this video was micro version (extremely small in comparison to regular sized bedan wood lathe tools. They are good to have around. Hope that helps.
