Casting a beach treasure blank with paua abalone and mother of pearl

In this video, Chantelle casts a "beach treasure" blank with paua abalone, mother of pearl, and a beach shell. This blank was cast in two parts. First, the transparent portion to cover the abalone. Once cured, the mother of pearl portion was added on top. This was a fun one and I learned a lot about casting in the process (there were a few failed attempts before getting this final result)! Did you discontinue the Blue Titanium kit? I just came across this video but I don't see the kit on your website. Thanks!
Thank you for the info video.
Nice tip. That's definitely easier than how I'd usually try to tweak that.
Very helpful hint. Thanks
good assembly instructions
Nice work. All the best from: Petawawa, Ontario.
Can a man or woman wear that?
Not quite that easy actually. Lots of issues will arise that are not shown here.
Merci beaucoup William Je t'aime tu viens de sauver mon éval😘❤
What lathe is that?
i used to turn lots of these, infact my first order from you was probably a bunch of them! haven't turned one for a while though. i thought there was a sizing sleeve that fits over the middle bushing for the barrel diameter, you then removed the sleeve to get the tenon diameter
If you had checked your disc sander base for square before you started you would not have seen a "gap". I have been using my disc sander for a while now and never had a problem. It takes hardly any time at all to check.
Very good video. However, I wipe with a dry rag after both dry and wet sanding to keep from mixing any grit.
Handy gadget. Re. Sanding better would be to use hdpe bushings along with your TBC adaptors. No damage to blank and if doing CA finish it won't gum up your centres or worse glue the blank to the centres.
so i did the one that came in my subscription package, fiddly and messy but fun. came out very nicely
had to watch this video after i opened this month's subscription package! i may be adding a new product to "Artistry in Wood" for this christmas season
What is the rotary machine name
It's a One Way lathe :)
"Gently knock it out" she says haha Mine never come out smooth
Well done I now know the right procedure
So, this is ONLY to avoid buying a pen mandrel then, yes?
It lets you turn between centers while using any type of bushing that would normally fit on a 7mm mandrel
What kind of glue?
Beautiful pen/pencil, well done!
I was in Hawaii and this guy had wood pens with a glass finish. I asked if he used CA and he said he hasn't use CA in 10 years. Do you know of any element that you can use to give a glass finish?
CA is by far the glossiest finish I've used. There's a friction polish by Doctor's Woodshop called "Pens Plus". You can build it up to a fairly shiny finish while maintaining a more natural feel to the wood. The Super Gloss friction polish by PSI is another glossy friction polish. I'm curious to know what this guy used!
Thank you so much!! Excellent and mesmerizing, I seriously couldn't look away.
Do you have a replacement for the dis-assembly press unit, show out of stock.
How much and how to get a pair?
I've always used wood varnish to finish my wood blanks, and they've always turned out nice and are still going strong after years of use. I'm wondering what the advantage of using CA glue finish is over using varnish? Thanks!
Can you make a ring like this using sterling silver or white gold channel inlay base??
Nice
Well that's pretty darn creative. I used the periwinkle acrylic pen blank to make one for my wife, it didn't occur to me that the tube isn't strictly necessary
What did you use as a mold? As well, where can I get it?
It was a plastic pen tube that we had laying around in the shop. It worked really well for fitting the square wood portion. They're sold in packs of 10: www.penblanks.ca/medium-clear-plastic-pen-tubes-10-pack. The only downside is that you can't reuse them.
Thank you
When you start cutting with the carbide tool, what’s the metal bar that you’re using to support the tool? And where are you mounting that on?
This is a tool rest attached to the bed of the lathe. It's adjustable so you can line it up with your project
Always good info on your videos. I will be ordering the kit in a few days. Take care and stay safe. From: Petawawa, Ontario.
What’s the carbide cutting tool you use?
It's a 10.5mm square carbide cutter on the Pen Master Accu-cut chisel
Beautiful great job, great video
I've always been intimidated by these kits. I know I shouldn't be because I've made dozens of pens. I should pick this one up!
Some great tips in there for budding pen turners. Well done. I ran out of plastic polish one day and had to get some pens ready for the next day. Racking my brain as to what I could use and it suddenly come to me, I tried tooth paste and was pleased with the finished result. I use tooth paste all the time now.
You mean dental polishing compound? I love that stuff!
@@yeetsbeets9894 No. That would work though. I did mean toothpaste and I was surprised by the finish that it gave to the pens. You also do not need too much either.
Would like to know more about the lathe. Great video. Thanks for sharing❤
Thanks! It's a Oneway 1224 :)
Well done. Very nice pen. I got my order today and will start on my pens soon. Take care and stay safe. From Petawawa, Ontario.
Nice job. I was linked here from another video where a ring like this was completed with resin. Now I’m wondering why use resin at all when you can just use CA glue?
🔥great vid 👍
Absolutely beautiful work. Would love to try this myself.
I have destroyed 2 of these pen kits because I couldn't get them to work. First time I pushed the transmission in to the lower part and the transmission wouldn't twist, it was just grinding. The second one because I couldn't get the pen apart to fix it. The refill just isn't long enough.
I notice this the first time I turned this pen. Here is how I fixed it. First of all a little clarification: The 7 mm slim line pen (not the one in this video) and the European pen (in this video) once assembled, the length of the lower part of the pen (from the tip of the pen without ink cartridge to the top of the transmission is the same length) I use a V block and a press to assemble these pens. The problem is, on the European pen the bottom portion is longer than the 7mm slim line pen. If the transmission needs to be pushed into the pen to get the same length, it will bind up and not turn very well, as you are already aware of. To fix this I just drill out he bottom portion of the pen where the transmission will go with an “F” size drill bit. Do this AFTER you turn the pen. Where a glove when drilling, the bit will grab the inner part of the brass sleeve. Only drill in about 1/2 inch. This size of bit is just enough to give some clearance for the transmission to spin freely. I have never had a problem with this kit again. Hope this helps.
What lathe did you use?
Thank you for this!! I had not thought of using the drill press instead of a hand drill, and for me, the drill press will be much easier, and more accurate than the disk sander! MANY thanks!
I've found that I get better results with an electric mini chop saw. Pretty useful if one cuts tubing frequently. Good video!
Thanks, very appreciated tutorial
Great simple video, just what I needed, thanks! I’ve been turning wood pens, but I’m getting ready to move into acrylics. Thanks!
It's a huge pain to do the sending and polishing but worth it for the reactions I get personally from my pieces.
Beautiful pen. Nice work and great videoing. Thanks.
