Goldfish Swim Bladder Surgery - Pressure Relief

  • This was a swim bladder pressure relief procedure that I performed on my very messed up goldfish, Loopy. It was ultimately unsuccessful because I was unable to remove enough air to allow for proper swimming.
This procedure should be used as a last resort, I am not a fish doctor so please do your own research and perform this at your own risk. I am not a vet, this video is NOT veterinary advice, please seek professional help if you have a fish with this condition
To buy goldfish, goldfish food, or any necessary products, check out my website! lukesgoldies.com Also don’t forget to follow me on my other social media platforms, also linked on my website!

I’d suggest using a thinner (larger gauge) needle.
That’s a thick needle for sucking up thick liquids.
A thinner needle will be fine for watery liquids.
And the easiest thing to pass through a needle is AIR. So try get like a 27.5 gauge needle. It should do less damage on the way in. Make sure to insert at a 45 degree angle, and if anything touches the tip, it will be damaged, and cause way more tearing of tissue on the way in.
Also make sure the needle tip is pointing down when going in. (The opening pointing up)
Also get a larger sized barrel.. 5mls looks like it would be twice the size of what you used.. but I’d try get a 10ml and take a full 10 out for such a large fish. Also you can try using a small 15g (half oz) weight on the lower side of the fish, using a harness going around the fish, to help lower its centre of balance.
It seems like as the swim bladder enlarges, it pushes the gut to the side, rather than having it evenly under the swim bladder, where it balances out the buoyant force.
Maybe with time and some massaging, the gut can be encourage to return to a lower point than the swim bladder.
Also I think being cautious with removal of air from such a bulky centred fish, is not necessary. If full recovery were to occur, reposition of the internal organs is necessary, and pressure from the swim bladder is working against that, so taking out a little more than is ideal probably will assist recovery.

@@vancan5302 I'm sure this is likely to late to help with your fish, but I figure it'll be good for others who might come by. Fancy goldfish will often have swim bladder issues. Usually you'll need to set up a sick tank to house the fish when while treating him. Finding a local fish pet store (not petsmart or petco) is a good start. They'll normally have a variety of medicines for fish, just follow the instructions and if things don't improve, talk to the store again and try something else. I also found my goldfish liked aquarium salt in the water in general, and I used it more so in a sick tank to help with treatments.

I had a goldfish that had this once; sore and everything.
I dont remember what finally resolved the swim bladder issue but he did eventually get better without surgery.
*But what I did to help with the sore was I put a clear glass jar in his tank.*
Eventually he got the idea and started sleeping and resting in there. It kept his body out of the open air while still allowing him to see around the tank and not feel lonely.
Like I said, he did eventually get over the swim bladder condition but I don't know if it was the peas or the salt or the dozens of other treatments I was frantically trying at the time. The glass jar was just my no-surgery quick fix that keep the sore from getting worse/infected, so I wanted to share it in case it could help someone here.
He was a huge boy too, so I had to find a big glass jar. I went to Target to find mine but Walmart probably has some too if that helps. A big clear cookie jar.

Please remember to change needles after poking. Once you have pierced something with a needle the point bends at the microscopic level, and becomes more painful to insert on the 2nd go. This becomes more noticable everytime the needle is reused. It also makes it harder for you to pierce as well. So please remember to change your needle after it's first use when poking animals.

If so, would that be better, especially because he wouldn’t be forced to be in an awkward position, and would again naturally be in an upright position?
Also, how is he doing? I saw someone say his sore is gone and he’s doing a little better, but that’s pretty vague, and I wouldn’t have thought a fish could survive very long, with any amount of being forced to float, or have to expend energy all the time to keep from floating.

The problem is that each time clove oil is used on, it has significant health effects, as the time that a fish is unconscious it loses oxygen to the brain. Do you have to put him back in the water during the procedure to let him breathe? Im confused how he stayed out that long. I had to remove a rock from my goldfishes throat and I was so worried he was gonna smother while I was doing jt

    • @lukesgoldies
      @lukesgoldies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +231

Nope, he can stay out the whole time. Its a common misconception that goldfish need to be submerged in water to conduct oxygen exchange. As long as their gills remain wet and do not dry out, they can survive out of water for hours. Its not the same as a human under water, because as soon as our lungs fill up with water oxygen exchange stops, but for fish above water, their gills remain wet and oxygen exchange still happens.

Hi Luke, I thank you soooo sooo sooo much for this video - I have a yuan bao goldfish that had swim bladder issues since a few months - We reached a point where she could not even swim down to get her food and losing energy day by day. I looked up the anatomy of hers and the closest I got was the anatomy pics of an oranda. With the help of you and some further investigating I performed this operation as there is no vets anywhere around to to this. It worked…. She now swims normal and I am so happy. Thank you again ❤️🙏🏻

Wow, that was intense! So much more involved then when I saw this done on a fishing boat.
Someone caught a queen trigger fish (such beautiful fish) and the mate punctured the swim bladder with a sharp object, pushed the air out then threw it back. Fish swam away strong tho. It was the fishes best chance of survival.

I just did this surgery on my oranda and I was so stressed out but it worked perfectly. I tried all the other methods for 2 weeks before doing this. Thanks for all the info I'm still stressed hoping I didnt hurt him and he makes it in the long term. Before he couldn't go down was facing down and couldnt go to the bottom. Now hes all the way at the bottom swimming perfect I might have taken to much out but hopefully it will correct itself. Way better than he was and is eating now.
