Man, do i feel dumb for trashing a card that had a similar issue lol. And i had the equimpent and experience to do a similar repair, had i known what to look for. Guess you learn something new every day. Thank you for this video, very professional, entertaining, and most importantly, informative.
This was a really nice badass fix! So fascinating to see how you know when the 5V is missing then lock at the step down converter and instantly know which pin is ground and even better that you know whats blown up if pin 2 Haß ground too! But mindblowing After all this is that you know that the 0 ohm resitor is often fucked up too! Just incedrible and really interesting to watch!!! Wish big Boss and you the Best!

Thank you for the insight, experience definitely helps here. Had the same problem with a 1070 over a few years ago changed cap twice and both times it went bad and deemed it a no fix. Assumed the GPU was beyond economical repair. Didn't think to check the zero ohm resistor but you can only know this from experience.

I am an automotive electronic specialist and I am very fast at identifying and repairing major faults with vehicle electrical systems. I usually get vehicles after many many techs have been involved and have added multiple problems to cars (no problem i can overcome other techs damages) ... Sometimes I get customers that they even though they are out of options ( as far as finding a competent tech) still manage to disagree and argue concerning my fees .. I love the work I do but sometimes I want to leave the trade because I'm not a very sociable person especially when you have people that do not appreciate that I saved the day ( alot of cars I repair are deemed no fix as you say) .. Do you have any suggestions on any signs I can have posted so they better understand to get my point across that I can fix because of my experience.... I was surprised to see parts being salvaged to repair a board. Is there something special about those capacitors and resistors that new parts can't be bought and stocked?
Thank you for sharing your wisdom, If this is a common problem with this card should owners of this card have it serviced as preventive maintenance and how often ? The whole reason I am asking is because if this happens a lot with this card it would not be worth picking up unless really cheap .
This is preventing e-waste from being tossed into a landfill or some recycling place that only tries to take out the metals. I hope that manufacturers would at least supply parts or allow aftermarket to supply parts and board diagrams to repair shops. That way you have less junked GPUs

Hello, I have two questions: 1.) I have a Toshiba 1200XE with a faulty power supply. The electrolytic capacitors leaked and the board is a mess. How do I clean the board? There are many smd components like resistors, inductors and so on, on the board. 2.) How do I desolder the joints without cracking the bolts, because the board is a 4-layer pcb. Thanks. Why would you replace the commonly failing cap with one from a donor board? Couldn’t it already be well on its way to failure? Wouldn’t it be better to replace it with a new one?
I have a question : why not simply bridge the two pins with a blob of solder instead of putting back a 0 ohm resistance ? Do 0 ohm resistances do anything else than being bridges ?
They are generally used for convenience during board manufacturing because machines can install an SMD quicker than a jumper wire. However in this case it also acted as a "fuse" limiting the amount of current going through it to ground and probably avoiding a fire. That's why it's better to have it there.
Alex, I’ve been meaning to ask this for a year now. What’s the difference between a zero ohm resistor and a piece of wire? After 50 years of doing electronic repair (no micro) I had never seen a zero ohm resistor. Keep up the good work.
In the Navy I had a zero ohm resistor. It was supposed to be a coil. 120 feet above the 13 foot, rough seas off Viet Nam. "Strap up, climb up and fix it!" Yes, SIR! (saved the Captain's reputation, had an afternoon sickbay medicinal brandy fest)
This was actually answered in another video. the zero-ohm resistor is basically the same as a wire, just like you said. Its simply used as it is easier for surface mounting components.

Value of the caps would be unknown unless you have the schematics unfortunately.

They can also act as rudimentary fuses, indicating fault location or stopping further damage.

However in this case it also acted as a "fuse" limiting the amount of current going through it to ground and probably avoiding a fire. That's why it's better to have it there.
Also why would you not repair it to its original state if you have the parts readily available
