    Same thing has been happening to the 3050 laptop for years too. If I recall, the 4GB 3050 has 2 versions with different CUDA core amounts, and then a newer 6GB version that has the same CUDA cores as the 3050 Ti 🤔

      @@LinusTechTips @JarrodsTech, you can also consider all the shenanigans with the max-q thing with the 30xx laptop with different performance depending on the TDP... or even this last 2 years with the 40xx laptop where for instance, Asus put a 4090 inside their G16 2024 but it's a castrated 115w version.. (yeah I know not necessarily nVidia's fault here).
      Anyway Laptops selection those last 2 years is a minefield : all the 4070, 4060, 4050 are basically useless when the laptop manufacturer is using 16:10, 1600p with sh1tty 6 or 8gb vram. 4080 is barrely acceptable (D4 with high details 1600p is almost eating all the vram in this case for instance)...
      And with the 4090 full 175w, you'll end up having at least a 2,5kg laptop with a 330w power brick (yeah now we got GaN power brick but it's barely better) just to end up having a GPU that barely deserve the xx90 name...
      I also think that a lot of laptop manufacturer ended up cutting the corners because of the increase in the price of the 40xx, just like Lenovo did with the Legion 7i pro...
      But as long as they don't have a serious competitor, they will have a boulevard to continue their stupidities.
      Edit : sorry LTT ended up talking about those details at 9:42

      the same happens in cars.
      A brand new car model has bugs that are ironed out in like 1-2 years, and as the car approaches the last years of it's life, the car makers use the cheapest parts possible, from secondary or tertiary parts suppliers and watered down formulae for the plastic composite panels.
      That is how they make even more profits, by selling the same cars, with higher prices but also lower quality and lower manufacturing cost.
      This is why you hear their profit margins goingf up year after year in their reports, but in main media headlines they are whinning and bishing about poor profits, trying to cover up their practices.
      Not a new thing at all, this is decades old practice.
      Now they uncovered a new way to icnrease profits, by charging customers double for the same parts...subscription. You pay up the car , but they block functionality from parts so you pay again.

      If you had only 3gb you would lose a lot of performance in games at the time that wanted a little over 3gb, something that wasn't a problem on the similarly priced and more capable 480.

    What's criminal is in budget end people will count their last penny to pick a HW spec that e.g. just breaks over 30FPS for some game they love. And a 10..20% decrease will leave them with unusable hardware and no money.

    • @Unknown_Genius
      @Unknown_Genius 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +19

      Yup, not even only break 30FPS, they're already on the higher end consumers if they can buy anything somewhat modern - so they essentially straight up scam people that already can't really afford a higher end card but still want an experience where they don't have to change everything in the config to get it to run.
      It's really weird to scam people out of cash that already pay you what they can spare.
      I already thought energy efficency, ease of use & the lack of power efficent modern GPUs is part of why most people play on console, but this just gives it another huge bump as to why budget players should stick to consoles.

    • @Cyromantik
      @Cyromantik 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      @@Unknown_Genius I get what you mean, but consoles still don't let you easily customize them, so they're still unattractive to a budget gamer such as myself. I know I'm in the minority though, the market isn't aimed at me, and I'm actually happy tweaking out greater performance out of my setup, it's part of the adventure, I just wish naming conventions weren't part of that adventuring uncertainty.

    • @Unknown_Genius
      @Unknown_Genius 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @@Cyromantik Yup, the issue here isn't the market not being aimed at people, but people specifically being deceived which may lead to people rather switching to console instead of ever building a budget PC again after it happened once, especially if they saved up a lot to have a higher end budget card for once.
      At least I do imagine that someone who bought parts for like 300€ (this card included) may just think about better spending that money for e.g. a Series S the next time around, especially if they upgrade from some older gen budget cards like the 1650 and expect... well, more than like a 35% speed increase after 5 years - or depending on the game an increase in like 5-15 FPS. At that point I'd (personally) just go get a console given that I'll at least know that games will run and I'm not throwing my money out for absolutely nothing.
      Ironically enough you'd have a PC that has almost the same performance + a console as well at that point.
      Most crazy part imo is that the 3070 essentially is close to be a mid range GPU at this point, yet they decided "Why not release a slightly better 1650?" somehow.
      Funnily enough I had more budget builds (not entirely lowend) myself for years, and for me it was always a fest to upgrade after ~4 years, because usually you had some games already that didn't run without tinkering with them, and after the upgrade they were just playable - and if I hadn't bought a more expensive one, I might have even fallen in this trap myself as it'd have been time to upgrade around now and possibly not noticed that I'm watching the wrong review.

I once bought a laptop saving for 6 years and I regret it , a lot of reviews and people , I saw they got better laptop than mine at same price or even lower , can't get that out of my head. I emptied one of my bank savings for it lol. I also tend to buy a good phone , but I always buy things I can only afford if I cut on meals , risk insurance or take loan or do two jobs and some risky finance . I don't know why but I don't buy cheap stuff even if it means to risk my college fees or potentially endanger me if something happens , I guess I really do want to spend money only if it's worth it . That's why these misleading numbers will hurt me badly . If I spend a lot of money on a pc to realize it's not worth it, I'm going to off myself. Already sad about my " laptop " which cost 800$ but only 8Gb DDR5 and , Ryzen 5 , 3050Ti 4GB
      You can get at 500$ 16GB DDR4 , and even some 1650 at 6GB... really wrongest decision of my life considering I don't have money to buy any new clothes or repair anything if broken for a while lol.

      The Titan X situation was so much worse. It's actually a russian doll case of misleading marketing. Nvidia initially released the Titan X, which was a Maxwell card comprised of the full fat GM102 die and 12GB of RAM, basically a GTX 980ti with double the memory and a 10~15% performance boost. Then they released the Titan X. Literally the exact same name, but this time a card comprised of an almost full fat GP102 die and 12GB of RAM, basically a GTX 1080ti with a slight performance boost and an extra 1GB of RAM. This REALLY annoyed the community, so they called it the Titan Xp since the two cards were in completely different performance classes, like the pascal version was very nearly twice as fast in some case. THEN Nvidia released an ACTUAL Titan Xp, which WAS the full fat GP102 die with slightly faster 12GB of RAM, giving about a 10% improvement over the last card, but the name basically made it impossible to call it anything that wouldn't confuse anyone. Call it the Titan Xp and you're going to confuse people in reviews because that's what people were already calling the last card in reviews, but it's not what you see on the shelf. Call it the Titan Xpp so that people don't get confused by reviews and you confuse them when they get to the shelf. In retrospect, people now call them Titan X Maxwell, Titan X Pascal, and Titan Xp, but the damage has already been done. Tinfoil hat, I think they did it on purpose to implicitly tell reviewers to never make up names for their products.
      When I walked into Microcenter during the fiasco, I saw so many open box titan cards, especially the Maxwell ones. The thing that shocked me the most was that Nvidia ever dared to screw with their enthusiast buyers, but I probably should've taken it as a hint that their enthusiast buyers were now in the enterprise space and we didn't matter anymore to them.

As we were building a comparable in specs with a cut in price PC. I pushed for a 4060Ti to stay in budget and because his gaming didn't need anything more substantial than that for many years to come. He argued that the laptop was a better deal because of the 4070 (which btw run on 80W) while my pc had worse specs.

      Yah, it's bad and awful but there just isn't that much that can be done at a larger scale. Bring government into it and sometimes you get some useful labeling or standards but often you get red tape that companies can use to keep competitors from entering the market.
      And then you sometimes get the truly horrific labeling laws like those requiring GMO warnings -- in effect tricking people into thinking technology that can reduce costs and improve health around the world is awful.
      In other words it's horrible but humans kinda suck so it's hard to do better than horrible.

      It's a mixed bag, we have companies selling us time bomb controllers that will drift in months, while SEGA gave us hall effect sticks since the inception of sticks on SEGA hardware and everyone voted with their wallets against them. Now those same people complain about stick drift like it slaughtered their families.
      Intel make cheap, and frankly underrated GPUs and yet everyone refuses to support them because NVidia's spicy lighting is slightly better, then they complain that GPUs are too expensive. (I daily drove an Arc A380 for a solid year and it was great on Windows 11 and Linux Mint/MX Linux. But people still brushed them off anyway)
      People make poor decisions, and when they come back to bite them, they point fingers at everyone else. (like the time a 20 - 30 fps DVD player outdid the competent games consoles, and the rest of them took on that same "multimedia and casuals" approach that everyone hates today.) Until people realise how stupid it is to support bad things over the good ones because the bad one has one thing the others don't, they deserve the poor products they've paved the way for.

    As if it wasn't already confusing before, this absolutely sucks.
    I worked at a semiconductor manufacturing plant before. I can understand why they segment and salvage some dies as it makes sense to be economical and make use of something that can still work but for lower tier products if they underperform functional and parametric tests (which may or may not indicate physical die issues).
    Think of the i3, i5, i7, and i9 Intel chips as an example (not my IRL job, only for analogy's sake). The dies would be the same structurally. However, along the long manufacturing process, some of the dies would fail i9 and i7 tests but pass i5 and i3 standards. They would be "binned" or sorted accordingly. Sometimes, we even had to purposefully sort i5 chips into i3 if there was more demand for it just to fulfill orders. There were some chips that were only renames with additional tests too but basically the same structurally. The opposite happens too where the same chip is tested with less or looser coverage and that is sold as a different product altogether.
    Naturally, if the yield of higher end dies are lower, they would struggle to keep up with demand. From NVIDIA's side, it seems they have a tougher time sorting the products into their existing product categories whereby the supposedly 3080 chip does not quite meet the standards of its target yet is a bit above a 3050 but less than 3060. Knowing the price difference is larger if they tag it at 3050, they're just likely minimizing loss or maximizing and salvaging whatever profit they could gain. Thus, they end up creating a weaker 3060 variant overall.
    Long story short, this is not new to semiconductor manufacturing. It's just that these modern processing units are so complex and expensive to build that I get it why they want to salvage whatever they can. On the part of the consumers, however, it really is a pain if companies can't make it easier to manage expectations on performance and price associated with a product name or product tiers.

    They do it because non tech pc gamers always think the video card with more video memory is better. I remember back in the good old days of Comp USA, I saw a guy confused about a video card and he was going to buy a low end Radeon with 256MB vram on it. It was a very slow entry level gpu. I wasn’t a sales person, but I tried to explain to the guy that video memory isn’t everything. I showed him the difference between NVIDA GeForce FX 5200 that also had 256MB of vram and showed him a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra with 128mb of vram. The 5200 and 5700 Ultra was the same chip as far as I can remember. Too lazy to verify that. I think that the TDP of the 5700 was higher and it had nearly double the clock speed of the 5200. It was the most simplest example that more vram doesn’t beat clock speeds. I said he should buy a better Radeon card. I can’t remember the Radeon models because it’s so long ago. The only reason why I remember t the nvidia models was because I owned the 5700 Ultra on my PC. He ended up talking to a store rep later and ended up buying the low end Radeon with 256mb. The store rep likely just told him more vram is better. They confused because increasing system ram back in those days improves performance significantly. But VRAM doesn’t. Faster GPU beats more VRAM any day.
