When I was about 11, I used to imagine the Tleilaxu had a Genetics school, which I attended. But now I think I'm going to nope out of that scenario, thank you very much.

The tanks WERE the women. This was stated when the sisterhood told skytale that no sister would become a tank, then they went ahead and gave sisters to become tanks. They weren’t artificial wombs, they were women

    Hello Grim.
I am NOT a 'fan' of the Tleilaxu... But, I do find them interesting in the Dune setting. Mostly due to their ability to 'limit' their manipulations and deal with the consequences.
If you think about them and their science, it is easy to imagine it all getting out of hand, and a world filled with abominations and twisted mutants. Yet the Tleilaxu were 'human', for the most part. And thus allowed to fill a role in the universe.
For thousands of years, it seems that the Tleilaxu were trying to leap past the eventual cel death of individuals, by 'rebirthing' a clone of that person that the 'soul' would re-inhabit and continue it's life past it's death.
The Duncan Idaho experiment was the first and greatest achievement in this program, being it's most successful expression of a person regaining the memories and knowledge of it's predecessor being.
One can only imagine a society where individuals bodies could die over time, only to be reborn in another cloned body and regain their memories and place in that society.
Death, then, would not be the end we think of it today. Although, having said that. I somehow doubt I'd want to live in such a society, since by it's very nature, it would have to be a more rigid class system than even ants experience in order to stay stable across vast lengths of time.

Frank Herbert was thinking of the Jews when he created them.

    • @tonyscott1658

@@leosharman8630 Not quite. FH thought of Israeli Jews when it came to ecological issues of reclaiming the desert. The Jews themselves appear as Jews in the last Dune novels. The Bene Tleilax derive from different cultures. E.g. the word "axlotl", the name of the infamous Tleilaxu tanks are named (presumably) after a Mexican "salamander" renowned for their regenerative abilities, axlotl probably deriving from axolotl, which is a name in the Nahua language, Nahuatl. The Bene Tleilax are more similar to (Christian) celibate monks with some aspects of shamanism. The Jews believe in matrimony over celibacy. The Bene Tleilax are definitely MGTOW. :-)

Yes, I was going to write "yeah, I was swayed by GrimDark's argument, as you see above" but it's seems our exchange has been deleted/removed. You're right. I'd forgotten that FH names 2
jews in Chapterhouse. As I'd said prev tho, I've always though it so strange how he drops these characters of the jewish religion in the plot, seemingly unnecessarily when everything else is so far removed from present societal structures.

I always had an intense dislike of the axoltl tanks when I first read the Dune novels in the 1980s. Then GW and Graham McNeill just *had* to use that idea and come up with the vile daemonculaba of the Iron Warriors.
GW: Hey Graham. Can you take this thing from Frank Herbert's books, slap a Chaos sigil on it, and then make it very, extra, extremely nasty?
    Graham McNeill: Hold my beer.

I hated the tleilaxu in the house books because of what they did to Ix, but face dancers are the reason the tleilaxu are my faction.
As for the axlotl tanks, I’m still tryna figure them out because in the books it sounds like if a tank was disconnected, they would turn normal again. It doesn’t sound like they do a lot of altercations to the tanks when they hook them up. But that does raise some questions. Do they have a solution running through the veins to allow their skin to stretch more? How exactly did they make the first Duncan ghola who basically just had the hole in his head repaired.
The tleilaxu are a faction I would love to see a POV of, especially for a face dancer, or axlotl tanks
Kinda like how I wish I could find material about someone going through the process of becoming a space marine in WH40K.

The tanks are the females of the race, and when they used a bend geserit as a Tank the results were amazing so they were trying to swipe the sisters to make them into a Tank for breeding and cloning like Duncan Idaho. They are creepy and sadists.

One of the things that is not emphasized very much is that the axoltl tanks which provide
the incubators of all the genetic products of the Bene Tleilax are the Bene Tleilax women which explains why nobody had ever seen these women. The Bene Tleilax men had gone MGTOW and reduced their women into incubating furniture - likely their means of reproduction - and thus no female children, no adult women could ever be seen. These tanks were the essential motors of their genetic technology. I believe this idea should be appreciated. Small wonder the honored Matres went out of their way to destroy the Bene Tleilax. :-)

@@GrimDarkNarrator My pleasure. Indeed the Bene Tleilax had technological and genetic horsepower. I suppose many will say they were evil. However their activities would be essential in Herbert's storyline. Do you realize that eg it was (male) monks, the MGTOW of its time and place, that developed the industries of wine, beer and cheese - salutary to eg the French and Italian economies - during the middle-ages in Europe?
We need MGTOW, now that feminism has destroyed Western civilization. :-)

Females were viewed as inferior and without worth. Thus females were turned into a programmable womb capable of creating a large number of biological products.
