Guys there is a book called The Mentat Handbook, you should be able to get it free online. It is very detailed about how to become a mentat, 236 pages on the different skills one needs to develope. Its a fascinating read.
I expect we will eventually get to how the Mentat order ended up separated, so that there are multiple sources in the time of the books. Ix is of particular note, as their Mentats are slightly 'wrong,' commonly referred to as 'twisted Mentats'.
@Eye Above All Checking, yes, you're right. The Tlielaxu are pretty much the suppliers of all dodgy live things, including Twisted Mentats. (Since the Mentats that are exported are able to train new Mentats, this may be where they got their initial ones. Then, of course, they can just clone them, ensuring an unlimited supply of genetically suitable candidates.) Ix is the source of all technology that is questionable (or outright illegal, such as Leto II's computers).
@nickyiil A man of multiple addictions, as well. In the books, he's mentioned as consuming so much Spice that he has the Eyes of Ibad. If he could get hold of a crysknife, he could pass well enough for a Fremen to enter most sietches. This was a plan the Harkonen's were trying to implement, but the natural security features of crysknives and the tight security of Fremen over them made this impossible.
@nickyiil Actually, that unsightly disease was something they came up with for the David Lynch movie. Like so much else they created for the film, it has largely been accepted by fandom (despite it not being a very popular movie in general at the time). They really only got three things right about the Baron: He was very, very fat (but he used suspensors to reduce his weight so he could walk comfortably, not to let him hover around), he was gay (but not particularly murderous in how he enjoyed the male slaves) and he was extremely cunning. Now, if Piter De Vries thinks he can do it, I'm inclined to think he can. There are lots of circumstances where a Fremen might end up alone in the desert far away from home. He doesn't have to get into any particular Sietch, just any Sietch that will let him in. As long as he can look the part, the worst he's likely to face is a trial by combat, and he's sure to be a very, very good fighter. He's smart enough to not ask for much more than directions home, and he should be able to get that easily enough, so long as they think he's a Fremen from another part of the planet where things are a little different. Note that this plan is NOT part of the movie, and Piter De Vries does not have Spice addiction in the film. You can get a good photo of him as he appeared in the movie on Wikipedia, and he had normal, green eyes rather than the Eyes of Ibad. (The actor looks a lot more like the character now than he did then, too. And, fortunately, not like his more famous role as Grimma Wormtongue. )
@nickyiil It is unlikely that the Baron was made sick by the Reverend Mother, and he wasn't blackmailed into having sex with her. He was a hedonist, so despite being gay, he gave women a try once or twice to make sure he wasn't missing anything. There are strong indications that many of the Harkonnens were extremely fat. Glossu Rabban, who was from a distaff line of the Harkonnens, was extremely fat. Feyd-Rautha is noted specifically for NOT being fat, suggesting this is unusual.
While any degree of mental improvement is desirable. And if there ways to better ones self like that .. I'm sure many would be interested. But to be a person who's life long goal is to work ever increasingly harder to do the simplest task of storing data... to me is ass backwards. Sure I would understand if they fought 100s of years to free them self from machine control or enslavement. But to ignore the need for easy record keeping and use of simple data storage... instead to want to use a mentat.... no I don't think so. Somethings are just too useful to not use. And not using them makes an increased load on humans.. that seems like unnecessary work for people. But hey I'm just glad our world isn't based on super smart computers that experiment with murdering worlds worth of people just for their own agendas.
A post computer hi-tech society is always a fascinating idea.
by far the most informative video on Mentats
Thank you.

Thanks for the recommendation.
Excellent breakdown
- Mentats are an actual thing
Earth is a breeding ground for Mentats it seems.
It utilizes the “rainman” effect.
I see how the Fallout drug Mentats got it's name.
That is indeed a mighty easter egg or outright tribute to Dune in Fallout.
This is awesome. I love the idea of the mentats, and would truly appreciate more:)
I'll probably do at least one more video on them. Thanks :)
Thanks again for keeping this Dune lore up.
Thanks for supporting it!

Twisted Mentats are gonna be a separate video sometime :)

Were they or the order known to be corruptable? Puppetmaster tyrants?
i doubt the order would openly admit to that.
👍
You mean Skynet?...
🤔😏🤖🤖🤖
Given the aversion to computers in the Dune setting, I'd say they're quite the opposite.

Dislike?! It Seems As If They Were Slaves!
Were They Allowed To Have Spouse's?
Can AnyOne Answer This?
I haven't read about any married mentats, to be honest.
