  • Freebs, I have found the best, easiest, and most delicious bread recipe ever! I make it with simple white flour to cut and use for toast and sandwich bread, but you could make it wheat if you'd prefer. I found this recipe from thefoodnanny.com/white-bread (also listed below). Liz is a friend of mine and is the sweetest lady around! And boy, she knows her bread! Hopefully you love it as much as me.
    Links mentioned in the video:
    -Liz's cook book: thefoodnanny.com/product/food-... (here it is on Amazon: amzn.to/2EeS8XP)
    ⭐️Rectangle loaf pans: a bit of an investment, but so worth it! amzn.to/2GFxSNc. Just don’t use cooking spray on it, as per the directions.
    ⭐️Cooling rack: amzn.to/2Ed7FXQ
    ⭐️Clear bread bags: amzn.to/2DX5p3E
    ⭐️Dough hook for Kitchen Aid: (You need to find the one that fits your model!!!) amzn.to/2s7qVkU
    -- BREAD RECIPE (I adapted it slightly) --
    INGREDIENTS:
    2½ cups milk
    ¼ cup butter
    ⅓ cup honey
    2½ teaspoons active dry yeast
    1 egg, beaten
    2 teaspoons salt
    5-7 cups all-purpose flour
    DIRECTIONS:
    Heat together the milk, butter and honey in
    the microwave for about 45 sec.; stir and
    heat for another 45 sec. Cool liquids down to
    lukewarm if too hot.
    2. Pour the milk mixture into a large bowl or in
    a heavy duty mixer. Add the yeast, egg, salt
    and enough flour to stir together to make a
    moderately stiff dough. Knead for about 6 min.
    by hand or in a bread mixer.
    3. Generously grease two bread pans. If you use the rectangle pans I use, you need to grease with Crisco! Form
    dough into 2 loaves and place in pans. Cover
    with a dishtowel. Let dough rise until double.
    Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 min. on the middle
    rack, until browned on top. Enjoy!

    I LOVE that you scrape your bowls clean of the ingredients with a spatula. I get so bothered when I watch a food video and they waste so much food by not scraping all ingredients into the bowl. So thank you!

      It's also possible they do that so they can get through the instructions quickly. I scrape my stuff clean too, I love the pampered chef spatula for this I forget what it's called bought it like 10 years ago. Not sure if they still sell it, it's a very small spatula and fits in jars nicely so it also works well for getting pasta sauce and pizza sauce out!

I personally like that you are able to upgrade house, go on vacations etc. It shows that the knowledge and advice you give to get out of debt and reach your goals actually work. I wouldn't want to follow someone's advice who after ten yrs is still at square one, it shows they don't know what they're talking about. Love your channel and blog ☺️

    Since my first comment on this recipe (a year ago) I have purchased the sandwich loaf pans and am STILL a MAJOR FAN of this recipe. I used it to make bread for my elderly neighbors and church folks during the overextended flu season. They were so happy as it often saved them a trip. It's amazing how much joy and goodwill a simple loaf of bread will bring to someone. THANK YOU JORDAN for sharing this with all of us. I'm retired, grown kids, grandkids etc.. BUT I find your helps and hints very applicable to my lifestyle. I'm past frugal.... I'm cheap.

    For a sourdough verson: reduce the milk to 1.5 Cups, substitute yeast for 1 Cup feed sourdough starter, and let rise in a warm oven for 7-8 hours until doubled. I started this in the morning and by supper it's ready. I also used 3 Cups whole wheat and 2-3 cups white flour. Really yummy!

    I used to work in a bakery, and we used (new, washed) socks to grease the pans. They don't slip off, and you can just keep it in your shortening container, if you use them often enough. You do have to, then, wash your hands, but no ziplocks go to waste.

    Just wanted to say thank you for the great recipe. I'm a SAHH (stay at home husband) and we normally don't buy bread for over 70 cents a loaf but unfortunately Kroger stopped marking the bread down. We buy bread once a month and freeze it, been spending roughly $10 or so for a months worth of bread. So, the wife came across this video and I gave it a try. We sat down and did the math, in great detail, and figured each loaf of bread (and we have a smaller loaf pan at the moment--order the longer one in a couple weeks) comes out to about .69 cents a loaf. Two loaves a week and it's $5.52 for a months worth of HEALTHY and delicious bread. So, thank you.

    I just made this!! Omg! this is awesome, SO FAST!! I used almond milk and earth balance for the butter, I did use honey and a local egg, but I know this recipe would be great totally vegan. You just need to sub the honey for maybe maple syrup or bee free honey replacer and use a flax egg or energy egg mix. This was soooo good, Thank You Jordan for turning me onto the food nanny!

    Many moons ago... Like 60 or so... When my Mother would bake bread and when she pulled it from the Woodstock she brushed our home-churned butter across the tops thoroughly while they cooled on the windowsill. It smelled so wonderful when we got home from school we nearly cried. I'm glad your keeping one of the nearly bygone and forgotten skills of yore alive Jordan. Ifyou wantthekiddosto make butter just get some heavy style Mason jars and pour into a clean one heavy whipping cream about halfway up. Then plop in 2 or 3 washed marbles. Put the lid on and let them run around in the yard churning their own butter! Add a touch of salt if you want a more normal flavor. You can also add honey spread and cinnamon and sugar to a batch and OK my! Soooo decadent when the solids pull away from the liquid (buttermilk) it's ready. Drain off liquid and feed to farm animals
    Or chill it- load it with black pepper and a shot of Salt and drink or you can make delicious biscuits with that buttermilk. . . Christian Love to you and yours.

      I think every kid should make butter at least once! We used to do it in elementary school as a project (I'm almost 50) - when the teacher said she needed parents to start saving baby food jars, it was coming soon!
      My kid's never did, so we did the Mason jar at home. They love it - just when you think it's NEVER going to happen, the sloshing noise changes and BOOM - that's butter! 😁🖕

    TIP!!!
    Instead of wasting a zip lock bag to grease the pans I use one of those brushes meant for brushing sauces on meat and stuff.....also. You can brush butter on your bread right after you take it out of the oven for super delicious soft crust. And last tip. If you are lazy like me get a bread maker...dump the ingredients in and I set it to dough then when it's done I shape and pop in the oven or just let the bread maker do everything. Its worth the investment to save time!

    Made this today! I halved the recipe to make one loaf and (accidentally) added a tbsp extra butter, added wheat germ and vital wheat gluten, let it rise for an extra hour after it doubled, used half whole wheat flour and half white bread flour, and wrapped it in a damp towel ok a cooling rack after it was done. It was definitely delicious! Next time I plan to add a little more honey, because I may not have added enough for the sweetness I like. I don't usually like homemade wheat breads, but this was really, really good. Tip: the damp towel helps the crust to soften as it cools, for that "store bought" soft crust.

    I have to try this someday, looks yummy.
    I allready make my own bread- since way back when being a student on a low budget.
    Mine was a recipe for quick bread buns I found which I just added oats to add no taste but make you full on it longer. Nowadays I even use non-stick cupcake pans so no oven paper or shaping the buns by hand either.
    Within a hour I have a pan of fresh buns looking like little mushrooms, or cupcakes.
    microwaved to Melt 50 gram butter/margarine heated together 5 decilitre water and a package of yeast which here in Sweden is 50 gram too. I think
    Blend together to a grey mess and sprinkle some oats and blend in the flour. Add some more water if needed to get that smooth dough with some moist. Let rest for 30 min in the bowl under a towel or put the lid on if you have one.
    Then use a spoon or two and scoop out parts of the dough on a oven pan with space between to grow. Wait 20 minutes for the buns to grow and become round by themselves, then 8-11 minutes in the oven 225 degrees celcius. Done.

    Hi Jordan. This is the 2nd time I've watched this video (luv them all).
    I noticed you struggling a bit keeping the bag on your hand while greasing the pan, so I thought I'd share my little tip. I just take a small piece of paper towel to scoop the shortening out of the container & spread onto the pans. The scrunched piece of paper towel keeps the mess off your hands, yet still covers every corner of the baking pans. 🙂💕🍞

    Just finished making this bread and my girls are devouring it! it's the end of the month which means we can't go food shopping for another two days but I had pretty much all the ingredients I had to sub a few. I didn't have any eggs so I used 1/4 cup of applesauce and I used brown sugar instead of honey. We also don't have any salt LOL. So I can only imagine how much better it would be if I had all the actual ingredients 🤣

    Wow, I'm a baker (I make cakes for a living but have baked all sorts of things all my life) and I've never seen a single rise bread recipe. They all make you rise once in the bowl, punch it down, then form into loaves and rise again. Takes forever. Lol I'll have to try it! Also...little piece of advice. When making bread, it isn't as imoortant...But for anything like cake or cookies or pie crust you don't want to scoop your flour with the measuring cup like that. You want to spoon it into the cup and then level off. It packs it too much when you scoop it and throws your measurements off. I've weighed out a scooped cup and a spooned cup and it was off by a couple of ounces. That's enough to ruin a tender recipe like pie crust or cake. :)

    • @bonniezitting6671
      @bonniezitting6671 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've baked lots of bread recipes also... I've never seen seen a single rise recipe. And measuring flour for bread doesn't matter if you scoop or spoon it in since you dont really "measure" the flour. You go by how the dough looks

    • @lreichstein
      @lreichstein 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with this! As a bread baker, I weight my ingredients. I do go by how the dough looks/feels but scooping into the measuring cup (before I had a scale) or weighing was a game changer for me. Much more consistent loaves. For the single rise - I've done a few, especially when I was first learning, and it mostly makes a difference in texture.

    • @jobecki
      @jobecki 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you go to the link, it does have you rise in the bowl, shape them put in pans for second ris

      Weighing flour is the best way for accuracy but if you don’t have a scale scooping into the measuring cup is next best.

    • @rosemarynasralla3768
      @rosemarynasralla3768 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Meg C. I learned this tip years ago for slicing an even slice of anything and it really works: make a knife mark for the thickness you want, then start sawing down while pressing knife firmly back against the loaf (or whatever) from which you are slicing. Hold the firm press till you get to bottom. Seems a little counter-intuitive when you do it, but you will be amazed at result. Bread, fruit, cheese, meat anything you need to slice. Just be sure to use the right knife (serrated knife for bread, fruit, sausage, etc)

    • @christen5277
      @christen5277 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Bread knives are a must; makes it so easy. Best tip I can give is to cool the bread on a rack and cut where the rack grooves are. My cooking racks are spaced such that the lines in the bread are perfectly spaced as the size of regular slices. Turn the bread in its side so the bottom is facing you and cut so that you are watching the bottom and the side and slice straight as you sort of trace the groove left behind by the rack. Hope that makes sense!

      It depends on the dough. All purpose has less gluten so maybe that's why? First speed on a Kitchen Aid doesn't really do very good with the dough hook. Look up window Pane method. The dough should stretch like a window pane and be smooth and transparent when ready.
