This is so nefarious I don't know why gamers aren't talking about it. How to simplify so people easily understand it? MS gets other restaurants to provide you a buffet of games, sacrificing the quality of future of console gaming hardware. However have to give the devil its due, MS strategy in servicing the world (Africa, Europe, India, Americas etc.) Might be the winning strategy. Sonys only advantage is they are a hardware company, so they will need to continue to provide the best hardware, targeting the best overall "Value" when you take into context next-generation/games/ecosystem etc. Sony has its work cut out for it, and so does MS... LMAO Xbox has lost so many great lead devs from all their studios everytime MS acquires a studio. So MS is replacing all the great devs that have quit from all those studios with AI. There is so much more in programing AI then it is just to create the game with great lead devs. Something Xbox dont have any of, they have all started to quit after the Bethesda buyout, 70% of the lead devs quit after the Bethesda was sold to MS, Activision had 3000 devs to work on COD and now they are down to under 2000 devs because over 1000 of them quit after MS bought Activision. 343 Studios is about to shut down because Halo is now a dead game that will never recover, Phil Spencer made sure of that. It's just funny how everytime MS acquires a studio more then half the devs quit and go to PlayStation, Nintendo or just go Independent.
Reasons I don't think hardware will be taken away: 1. gamepass was the one thing they needed to make low income buyers a risk-free environment to try games. (this is to compete against the second hand game market where people will just buy games cheap but the developers see none of the money from a sale of a physical game to another person. Second hand games compete with first hand game sales and developers know this. Digital purchases eliminate that problem so Gamepass lets kids download the game, try it, and hopefully buy the digital version (out of convenience of not having to drive to local game store) over a second hand physical copy where the developers don't see any extra money. Gamepass is not meant to eliminate hardware but to compete with the lost potential sales from kids buying a second hand copy of their game from someone else. 2. Xbox brands is defined by their hardware first. It's what developers target when making a game. If the xbox services can be played through cloud, that is all good but the people making the games need a piece of hardware to consider how much graphics fidelity they can place into a game. The hardware xbox is the platform the defines the limits of what the games the developers make can get away with. Let us say you own a PC, you know some of the latest games won't run as well on older machines so you give players options to put detail settings down to keep framerate to reasonable levels. However with console there is a minimum level of frames per second that the public will put up with. 30fps being the standard for high detail games with effects turned on, and 60fps for games when running a lower resolution or having effects dialed back. 3. the collectors of gaming console and games, will never substitute a digital copy over a physical copy of a game. Because you don't truly own digital games. (unless you buy from GoG) If you are buying say a licenced game like Marvel Vs Capcom, Ninja Turtles, any licensed title....that game will be taken off the digital store as soon as the license expires. Collectors KNOW THIS. So we don't ever think of digital version as the same as owning the phyisical version. Now the big greedy corpos may WANT to replace physical games with a digital-only future. But we the consumers still hold the power. So it is unlikely that they can kil physical. It also cost jobs when you shut down bricks and mortar businesses. (when people have jobs they have money to buy games. Killing jobs is not good for the economy therefore people will keep physical versions alive out of principle. Just as people who collect paintings made by the original artists will never think of the digital scaned copy as the same thing. Or people colecting pokemon cards: they will never see the photocopied card as the same value as the original rare card. 4. MS is making a comeback as sony seem to be obsessed with the SJW movement. The recent Spiderman game is an example of this where the white male protagonist is retiring so the black spiderman can take the title from him. Many fans of Spider-man do not like the SJW woke ''make all whiteys feel guilty'' agenda. Just like Bud Light boycott, I see sony being boycotted because it is a brand associate with anti-american values to make kids hate their own country. As we saw with disney star wars, and bud light, consumers are boycotting the woke brands now. 5. MS represents american gaming since its an american brand. There will always be fans of MS products out of brand loyalty. The Windows phone was actually good product but failed due to coming too late. Apple dominated the market. However MS Xbox was there pretty early and has a fan following. MS brand can expand to new markets by encouraging people to play togather online from other platforms. They HAVE to look to the future so the other brands don't get ahead of them. But does this mean you abanadon the very foundation of the Xbox brand? No. Elder Scrolls started out as a PC RPG then when it came to console platform it reached a new audience beyond pc players. This allowed bethesda to make more money right? But did this mean they can abandon PC? No you still see Elder Scrolls on the pc but console is just the target platform now because of the need to cater to the casuals and normies since they are majority of people out there. So Elder Scrolls is making money from pc, console and probably in future mobiles. Making money off all platforms > making money on only consoles, or only pc or only mobile. This is the direction of the future. In a nutshell where I disagree with King Thrash is that MS will abandon hardware because developers still need a TARGET PLATFORM. Not all games run well if the developers who target a particular platform more ignore the limits of the other platform. Case in point: when CyberPunk was launched many low end console owners who still play games on launch ps4 machines could not get the game to run smoothly and Sony had to give refunds for that. But the PC gamers were having a ball with Cyberpunk because CD Projekt Red targeted PC as main version. If you don't have a target platform the ports to older hardware end up stuttering and running like crap which can harm a developers reputation!! So the moral of the story is when developers make a game, they must have a target platform (either console or PC) and make the game around the limits of the hardware they think is the ''current generation'' of power. When you just make a game that runs on al platforms, it means you must make the graphics only as good as the weakest system to rake in all the money from all the customers out there. And this can stunt the growth of the developers who may have to cut features out, limit how much is in the environment, and downgrade the textures and framerates to appease the poorer people running the game on old tech. So what consoles do is allow developers the minimum level of graphics fidelity to base their game off of. It lets them make a version of the game that should run stable on everything else. Get rid of hardware? You lose your minimum level. And when you do that, nobody will play your game since now the barrier to entry is the need to have to buy new machine just to play your game. That limits profits of the game since people on pc are the only people buying the game. In conclusion having console hardware be there acts as the stable version of your game when people are not interested in buying new hardware just to see and experience the game you make. You want profit? You got to make a low end version that reaches the masses of casuals on old console tech. When you do this, you get your game seen by more people than if you just target one platform like pc. That is why Bethesda designs games for normies now not just pc players. All the profit is from the console and the rest is the sales due to the availability of mods. Making money from BOTH audiences is how you survive! Not abandoning one platforms in favour of the other. (as we saw with Cyberpunk. Sony lost trust when they allowed the PS4 version to bypass quality control. If CDPR targeted consoles they wouldn't have people refunding the ps4 game and made more profit but they targeted PC as the main version causing the legacy console version to run like crap which = lost sales. But in the end the current gen ps5 and Xbox Series X run it at decent framerates) These 5 points are why I am skeptical of King Thrash's belief that hardware will be eliminated. It's the same tired argument I have heard from those who believe in the digital-only future. It is wishful thinking because it ignores the consumer right issue of buyers not really owning the thing they paid money for. It is just a coping mechanism of sony fanboys. Not people who are true neutral gamers like me who see strengths and weaknesses of all the brands. As long as we consumers hold the power (and we DO, please look at the Bud Light boycott as evidence) it would be suicide for greedy corpos to take away physical game machines and physical copies of games due to the strong desire of honest buyers to OWN the games they pay money for so they can sell them on the second hand market. The main reason for Gamepass is to compete (but never eliminate completely) the second hand sales of new games. The businesses that sell second hand games that are new titles, hurt the developers because when you buy a new title second hand, it meant you didn't spend that money on first hand game which the developers would have seen new money from consumers. Got it? That is why gamepass is good for indies and other the triple A developers who feel that they are being hurt by the second hand. But we can still see second hand games because game companies with a good track record for quality (nintendo) can still keep the price of their first party games high forever. That is because the demand for their games stays high a long time! So it is a good effect because it means if you as a developer make poor quality games, you are punished for it when people sell it off due to it being bad. (the consumer gets his money back to buy a good game that they actually LIKE!) King Thrash uses FUD (Fear Uncertainty and Doubt) tactics to paint a grim future for Xbox when in reality Xbox is just doing what Sony WISHES they can do if they had more money to do it but can't publicly say they want to do it - for fear of looking as ''evil'' or anti-consumer as Xbox)

You don't sacrifice your core fanbase and try to replace them with normies and casuals since hardcore gamers buy more games than casuals. ...But you NEED casuals to EXPAND and GROW as gaming is becoming more expensive as these triple A titles have bigger and bigger budgets! Thrash believes you need to replace the older people with new people and then ignore the core userbase. (ie the guys that play Forza, Halo, Gears etc) That would be like if From Software suddenly stopped making hard games because they know they can make more money creating easy games. That is not how you maintain a fanbase. If From software caved into the journalists and made all their games easy for them, they would betray their core fanbase which is their bread and butter income! Why do that when you can just make a whole franchise that isn't hard instead of no longer making Souls-likes? It's a false prophecy just like the one about nintendo vowing to not make console games in future because they feel mobile phones outnumber nintendo's so its easier to just release all mario games to phones. (that false prophecy never came true - what WAS true is them releasing mobile games but also making their flagship games on Switch. No ABANDONING their core fans in favour of mobile gamers and filthy casuals as the prophets of doom were predicting was going to happen) There is a lot of fake prophets who never back up their beliefs with logic. They quote people in interviews and don't understand that consumer dictate the future not the guy who works at the company and has wishful thinking. MS tried to expand into phones but consumers didn't buy windows phone. It was a good product but it didn't get market penetrationm. Why? Becuase people already were happy with what was on the market. But with Xbox, people respect the brand enough to stick to it since it represents an american built machine with western gaming genres. Eg WRPG, first-person shooters (not popular in japan which is why games like Metroid are not as big in japan when they went into first person view) and sims. (games like monster hunter which require patience are not for normies) If you believe that hardware is going to be eliminated in favour of cloud service then believe that. But there is about as much chance of that happening as nintendo deciding to ditch console hardware and release all games on mobile phones. It was a prediction that never comes true since the core buyers do not want to RENT games but rather OWN them. (Check out Good Old Games. I’m a little over 18 minutes in and I will listen to the rest before the end of the day. I’m not personally convinced Xbox abandons the console business entirely even though they probably should. GamePass doesn’t exist without the Xbox console being the main platform or delivery channel for end users to access the service. Microsoft will never find a way to increase GamePass subscriber numbers on PC as long as Steam exists. Unless they plan on acquiring Valve (which the PCMR vehemently denies can ever happen), Steam will remain the de facto platform for PC gamers. I don’t even expect Microsoft to be successful in mobile without their own device that is readily available within the market. Abandoning Windows Phone was a mistake and I still surprised Microsoft didn’t make use of their acquisition of Nokia. Microsoft’s management team is misguided in thinking that they can simply buy their way into mobile dominance purely as the result of purchasing ABK. Unique games that can’t be found anywhere else will always be the distinguishing factor in determining long term success. But no one in their management team seems to be able to grasp this concept. Lastly, using AI to have the public eventually make sandbox games is essentially a spiritual successor to what Microsoft did with XNA during the height of the 360’s popularity. While the concept seems fine in theory, Microsoft has never truly embraced indie game development and highlighted properly. Perhaps GamePass provides a better vehicle 🚗 for homegrown game creations as the platform needs to be fed constantly in order to encourage user growth. But, will this be enough to sustain the service in the interim while the fanbase waits for the 33-35 other studios to finally release content? Only time will tell….

This is so nefarious I don't know why gamers aren't talking about it. How to simplify so people easily understand it? MS gets other restaurants to provide you a buffet of games, sacrificing the quality of future of console gaming hardware. However have to give the devil its due, MS strategy in servicing the world (Africa, Europe, India, Americas etc.) Might be the winning strategy. Sonys only advantage is they are a hardware company, so they will need to continue to provide the best hardware, targeting the best overall "Value" when you take into context next-generation/games/ecosystem etc. Sony has its work cut out for it, and so does MS... For the hardcore gamer, I don't see how console/hardware in your home, will ever be trumped by online in my lifetime... Very interesting to watch.

There is so much more in programing AI then it is just to create the game with great lead devs. Something Xbox dont have any of, they have all started to quit after the Bethesda buyout, 70% of the lead devs quit after the Bethesda was sold to MS, Activision had 3000 devs to work on COD and now they are down to under 2000 devs because over 1000 of them quit after MS bought Activision. 343 Studios is about to shut down because Halo is now a dead game that will never recover, Phil Spencer made sure of that. It's just funny how everytime MS acquires a studio more then half the devs quit and go to PlayStation, Nintendo or just go Independent.

Reasons I don't think hardware will be taken away:
1. gamepass was the one thing they needed to make low income buyers a risk-free environment to try games. (this is to compete against the second hand game market where people will just buy games cheap but the developers see none of the money from a sale of a physical game to another person. Second hand games compete with first hand game sales and developers know this. Digital purchases eliminate that problem so Gamepass lets kids download the game, try it, and hopefully buy the digital version (out of convenience of not having to drive to local game store) over a second hand physical copy where the developers don't see any extra money. Gamepass is not meant to eliminate hardware but to compete with the lost potential sales from kids buying a second hand copy of their game from someone else.
2. Xbox brands is defined by their hardware first. It's what developers target when making a game. If the xbox services can be played through cloud, that is all good but the people making the games need a piece of hardware to consider how much graphics fidelity they can place into a game. The hardware xbox is the platform the defines the limits of what the games the developers make can get away with. Let us say you own a PC, you know some of the latest games won't run as well on older machines so you give players options to put detail settings down to keep framerate to reasonable levels. However with console there is a minimum level of frames per second that the public will put up with. 30fps being the standard for high detail games with effects turned on, and 60fps for games when running a lower resolution or having effects dialed back.
3. the collectors of gaming console and games, will never substitute a digital copy over a physical copy of a game. Because you don't truly own digital games. (unless you buy from GoG) If you are buying say a licenced game like Marvel Vs Capcom, Ninja Turtles, any licensed title....that game will be taken off the digital store as soon as the license expires.
Collectors KNOW THIS. So we don't ever think of digital version as the same as owning the phyisical version. Now the big greedy corpos may WANT to replace physical games with a digital-only future. But we the consumers still hold the power. So it is unlikely that they can kil physical. It also cost jobs when you shut down bricks and mortar businesses. (when people have jobs they have money to buy games. Killing jobs is not good for the economy therefore people will keep physical versions alive out of principle. Just as people who collect paintings made by the original artists will never think of the digital scaned copy as the same thing. Or people colecting pokemon cards: they will never see the photocopied card as the same value as the original rare card.
4. MS is making a comeback as sony seem to be obsessed with the SJW movement. The recent Spiderman game is an example of this where the white male protagonist is retiring so the black spiderman can take the title from him. Many fans of Spider-man do not like the SJW woke ''make all whiteys feel guilty'' agenda. Just like Bud Light boycott, I see sony being boycotted because it is a brand associate with anti-american values to make kids hate their own country. As we saw with disney star wars, and bud light, consumers are boycotting the woke brands now.
5. MS represents american gaming since its an american brand. There will always be fans of MS products out of brand loyalty. The Windows phone was actually good product but failed due to coming too late. Apple dominated the market. However MS Xbox was there pretty early and has a fan following. MS brand can expand to new markets by encouraging people to play togather online from other platforms. They HAVE to look to the future so the other brands don't get ahead of them. But does this mean you abanadon the very foundation of the Xbox brand? No. Elder Scrolls started out as a PC RPG then when it came to console platform it reached a new audience beyond pc players. This allowed bethesda to make more money right? But did this mean they can abandon PC? No you still see Elder Scrolls on the pc but console is just the target platform now because of the need to cater to the casuals and normies since they are majority of people out there. So Elder Scrolls is making money from pc, console and probably in future mobiles. Making money off all platforms > making money on only consoles, or only pc or only mobile. This is the direction of the future.
In a nutshell where I disagree with King Thrash is that MS will abandon hardware because developers still need a TARGET PLATFORM. Not all games run well if the developers who target a particular platform more ignore the limits of the other platform. Case in point: when CyberPunk was launched many low end console owners who still play games on launch ps4 machines could not get the game to run smoothly and Sony had to give refunds for that. But the PC gamers were having a ball with Cyberpunk because CD Projekt Red targeted PC as main version.
If you don't have a target platform the ports to older hardware end up stuttering and running like crap which can harm a developers reputation!! So the moral of the story is when developers make a game, they must have a target platform (either console or PC) and make the game around the limits of the hardware they think is the ''current generation'' of power. When you just make a game that runs on al platforms, it means you must make the graphics only as good as the weakest system to rake in all the money from all the customers out there. And this can stunt the growth of the developers who may have to cut features out, limit how much is in the environment, and downgrade the textures and framerates to appease the poorer people running the game on old tech.
So what consoles do is allow developers the minimum level of graphics fidelity to base their game off of. It lets them make a version of the game that should run stable on everything else. Get rid of hardware? You lose your minimum level. And when you do that, nobody will play your game since now the barrier to entry is the need to have to buy new machine just to play your game. That limits profits of the game since people on pc are the only people buying the game.
In conclusion having console hardware be there acts as the stable version of your game when people are not interested in buying new hardware just to see and experience the game you make. You want profit? You got to make a low end version that reaches the masses of casuals on old console tech. When you do this, you get your game seen by more people than if you just target one platform like pc. That is why Bethesda designs games for normies now not just pc players. All the profit is from the console and the rest is the sales due to the availability of mods. Making money from BOTH audiences is how you survive! Not abandoning one platforms in favour of the other. (as we saw with Cyberpunk. Sony lost trust when they allowed the PS4 version to bypass quality control. If CDPR targeted consoles they wouldn't have people refunding the ps4 game and made more profit but they targeted PC as the main version causing the legacy console version to run like crap which = lost sales. But in the end the current gen ps5 and Xbox Series X run it at decent framerates)
These 5 points are why I am skeptical of King Thrash's belief that hardware will be eliminated. It's the same tired argument I have heard from those who believe in the digital-only future. It is wishful thinking because it ignores the consumer right issue of buyers not really owning the thing they paid money for. It is just a coping mechanism of sony fanboys. Not people who are true neutral gamers like me who see strengths and weaknesses of all the brands.
As long as we consumers hold the power (and we DO, please look at the Bud Light boycott as evidence) it would be suicide for greedy corpos to take away physical game machines and physical copies of games due to the strong desire of honest buyers to OWN the games they pay money for so they can sell them on the second hand market.
The main reason for Gamepass is to compete (but never eliminate completely) the second hand sales of new games. The businesses that sell second hand games that are new titles, hurt the developers because when you buy a new title second hand, it meant you didn't spend that money on first hand game which the developers would have seen new money from consumers. Got it? That is why gamepass is good for indies and other the triple A developers who feel that they are being hurt by the second hand.
But we can still see second hand games because game companies with a good track record for quality (nintendo) can still keep the price of their first party games high forever. That is because the demand for their games stays high a long time! So it is a good effect because it means if you as a developer make poor quality games, you are punished for it when people sell it off due to it being bad. (the consumer gets his money back to buy a good game that they actually LIKE!) King Thrash uses FUD (Fear Uncertainty and Doubt) tactics to paint a grim future for Xbox when in reality Xbox is just doing what Sony WISHES they can do if they had more money to do it but can't publicly say they want to do it - for fear of looking as ''evil'' or anti-consumer as Xbox)

If they don't get what they want they must settle for a middle ground. Which is to keep pushing for a digital-only future but not kill off the core market of hardcore gamers that prefer physical games. Games like Baldurs Gate 3 and Elden Ring an Monster Hunter are far more deep and complex than your stupid sony movie games where you forced to watch stupid cutscenes every few seconds and you guy think that is so awesome. My view is one of skeptic: MS want that digital only future but it is impractical since consumers do not want less options to consume their entertainment. Bricks and Mortar business also make money selling physical so they will not stock MS Xbox or Sony PS console hardware if they can't sell the phyiscal games which is where they make the money. If MS and Sony suddenly got digital-only, retailers would say: ''fine, I am not stocking your machines now because we make nothing on the sale of the hardware'' and then they (MS and Sony) have less stores to stock their machines now. (no consumer wants to pay high shipping cost of getting it sent to them in the post when they order it online) You got that?

There is a lot of fake prophets who never back up their beliefs with logic. MS tried to expand into phones but consumers didn't buy windows phone. It was a good product but it didn't get market penetrationm. Why? Becuase people already were happy with what was on the market.
But with Xbox, people respect the brand enough to stick to it since it represents an american built machine with western gaming genres. Eg WRPG, first-person shooters (not popular in japan which is why games like Metroid are not as big in japan when they went into first person view) and sims. I’m a little over 18 minutes in and I will listen to the rest before the end of the day. I’m not personally convinced Xbox abandons the console business entirely even though they probably should.
GamePass doesn’t exist without the Xbox console being the main platform or delivery channel for end users to access the service. Microsoft will never find a way to increase GamePass subscriber numbers on PC as long as Steam exists. Unless they plan on acquiring Valve (which the PCMR vehemently denies can ever happen), Steam will remain the de facto platform for PC gamers.
I don’t even expect Microsoft to be successful in mobile without their own device that is readily available within the market. Abandoning Windows Phone was a mistake and I still surprised Microsoft didn’t make use of their acquisition of Nokia. Microsoft’s management team is misguided in thinking that they can simply buy their way into mobile dominance purely as the result of purchasing ABK.
Unique games that can’t be found anywhere else will always be the distinguishing factor in determining long term success. But no one in their management team seems to be able to grasp this concept.
Lastly, using AI to have the public eventually make sandbox games is essentially a spiritual successor to what Microsoft did with XNA during the height of the 360’s popularity. While the concept seems fine in theory, Microsoft has never truly embraced indie game development and highlighted properly. Perhaps GamePass provides a better vehicle 🚗 for homegrown game creations as the platform needs to be fed constantly in order to encourage user growth.
But, will this be enough to sustain the service in the interim while the fanbase waits for the 33-35 other studios to finally release content? Only time will tell….
