Microsoft are considering using AI to help with game creation.
This could be with project management tasks to help them keep on track and not waste time making design decisions prematurely and committing a lot of effort to polish them and then find they don't cohere with other ideas and the resultant dynamical interactive system is not fun to play whereas a more rudimentary prototype without polish would establish how each part of the game played and then those could be brought together in various ways to explore the most interesting dynamical space of possibilities which would generate emergent gameplay.
The programming of this gameplay would benefit from AI (they own GIT which auto completes code with CoPilot AI).
This unpolished prototype would interface to both the player and the aesthetics in terms of lore, world building, environment, navigable space, backstory for initial characterisation, a motivating concept, yielding multiple character arcs, which convey an underlying theme, a series of plot points, where characters are put through challenges that they can overcome to grow as characters (heroic) or fail at these challenges and reveal themselves to be flawed (villainous), characters who explore their interrelations with each other so that we have been led to sympathise with their group cohesion or conflicts or isolated plight, where enough mysteries are resolved to give the player confidence that the "author" knows all the answers to every question about their world even if some of that is concealed to make it seem enigmatic and only partially explained, where it is predominantly show don't tell with exposition used very sparingly. This is already done via the ChatGPT system and I had it write a very publishably children's story about a boy who gets lost in the tangled woods at dusk and meets a lonely owl who befriends him and leads him back to his village because the owl can see in the dark and hoot for the boy to follow him. That prompt turned into a fully characterised story that was accessible to children, I told it to apply no style (you can get it to imitate Roald Dahl or Lewis Carroll or an author of your choice), but I wanted to see what it would do by default in its own voice, and it was fascinating as it had a voice and it wasn't recognisably in the style of any particular writer. So, that would be some other tool that could be leveraged to assist another part of the project.
It is advisable for all inessential storytelling being done through environmental storytelling or audio files which you can listen to as you walk around or worst of all text files that you have to stop at a terminal and read which should only really be used if to move further without investigating all clues puts the uninformed player into huge danger that the information on the terminal would have easily informed them how to resolve the "threat around the corner", where the set ups all result in pay offs, and there is a cathartic climax involving some of the (surviving) characters. All of these narrative rules can be violated. You don't have to tell the story in chronological order. You can have no backstory for your main character. Christopher Nolan does both of these in _Memento_ and _TENET._ However, it is a good idea to stick with what has been proven to work well in the majority of stories, and follow that pattern, which is often called "The Hero's Journey" which influenced the _Original Trilogy_ of the Skywalker Saga, and much less so the whole thing once J.J.Abrams got involved (who also put set ups in _Alias_ and _L O S T_ which never got pay offs, and his "story for another time" explaining how Maz Kanata got Anakin's lightsaber from where Luke dropped it in Cloud City is never resolved). So, feel free to disagree with all my advice on developing an indie game here, but this is a combination of the Denki method which Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto used, and Fumito Ueda with _ICO_ (where the hand holding mechanic is central to this escort mission game), or Hidetaka Miyazaki with _Dark Souls_ (with the environmental storytelling being explained by TH-cam channels like VaatiVidya).
The paper _MDA: A Formal Approach to Game Design and Game Research_ by Robin Hunike and others emphasises Mechanics, Aesthetics and Dynamics and she was the producer of _Journey_ which is one of the most revered independent games ever made. _Braid_ has an anniversary edition with a commentary by those who were involved that could be of interest to game developers, and Jonathan Blow also has TH-cam videos of these conversations being released right now.
AI could be trained to test various genres of games to enable small indie devs to compete, and AI could auto translate text (and speech) to assist with the onerous Localisation requirement of Microsoft so you would get some form of synthetic voice acting in games which could be stylised with a prompt to sound like a blend of template voices and express statements, questions, and exclamations differently, and convey emotion that was written in a subtext (not dynamically inferred from the drama inherent in the mise en scène - i.e. such as a Mexican standoff - as AI is not that advanced yet). So, it would be wrong to dismiss AI here.

Both Sony and Nintendo are too smart to talk to the media because they know that their words can be used against them, just as we are seeing now with past Bond and Spencer comments being used against them and to mock them. Sony and Nintendo execs are just more intelligent and forward thinking. They aren't going to put themselves in positions that limit their ability to be highly flexible without appearing hypocritical or back sliding and embrassing themselves, which is a issue we see constantly from Bond and Spencer. Thank god I got rid of my Xbox with this crap they are going to pull I guarantee you this hand held that they’re bringing out will be the same as PlayStation. You can take it anywhere as long as you are on online but it’s going to need access to an Xbox just like PlayStation hand held does the only difference will be with Sony as long as the games are on your ps5 you can play it with these I guarantee you will need game pass to be able to use it so if you are one of the few gamers that still buy your games on xbox and not use game pass it won’t work plus you know they will be a charge to use it something like $5 on top of the $15 you already pay Microsoft just like a phone company dose if you want to use your Apple Watch to make phone call and send text with out your iPhone you just pay a small fee to do that

There's going to be many, many more cuts. Obsidian will probably be made to work on a Fallout game under Todd Howard because nobody cares about Outer Worlds or Grounded or Pentiment or Avowed. In the Official Xbox Podcast where they gave Updates on the Xbox Business they either referred to hardware or devices and avoided the term console. This became evident to me when listening to it again and Tina Amini started saying "cons--" and then corrected herself MID WORD to then go back on message and say "device". I don't think that they would be quite so scrupulously careful to not officially explicitly commit to a new generation of XBOX console, but instead talk about Backwards Compatibility, Cloud Save, and Play Anywhere if their plan wasn't actually to get as many of their hardcore console gamers onto PC and discontinue the XBOX SERIES S (replacing it this November with a 2TB XBOX SERIES X all digital edition, which has already been leaked under the codename "BROOKLIN", and which Microsoft should have released alongside the disc based XBOX SERIES X in 2020 and not have the S with this silly committment to Parity, and Larian Studios struggling to put _Baldur's Gate_ on SERIES X as it had to also put it on SERIES S), then in time discontinue the XBOX SERIES X as it has more likelihood of mechanical failure, and have it so that the only XBOX console they sell is XBOX SERIES X all digital edition until they stop console manufacture completely. This will happen once more have upgraded to a Copilot+ although I think the branding is dire and it should be called:

Where all that is kept of XBOX is the logo and it isn't formally referred to. _Senua's Saga_ is from XBOX GAMES STUDIOS and I think they will change that in the near future to a more platform agnostic:

but here the logo looks unprofessional as the *g* descender is sloppily below the baseline of the typography. Emphasing *Games* is more succinct than *Gaming* and the latter is actually presumptuous as it assumes people will be gaming with their games, when all they can expect is to have a store, and to put their games on Steam and maybe people will buy or rent them but, realistically, based on actual statistics, few will actually complete them, let alone get every Achievement. So, having *Games* is meek and not aggressive self promoting. This is subtle, but it is important as their XBOX brand is worthless since the XBOX SERIES X only launched with _The Falconeer, The Touryst,_ and _Bright Memory_ whilst being sold in a box that advertised _Halo: Infinite._ Although this wasn't misleading marketing, it had the same feel as a lie. _Halo: Infinite_ was clearly planned to be a launch title, but 343i messed up, then when they got their year long delay, it was a bad game, and lacked a Forge so the community could add to the limited number of multiplayer maps. Apart from _Flight Simulator_ their quality control is terrible. _Redfall, STARFIELD_ and a missing track in _Forza Motorsport_ do not make these titles AAA. Without quality AAA there is no compelling reason to invest in the XBOX ecosystem. XBOX is dead, it just hasn't stopped staggering around yet. XBOX is a zombie console that needs to be shot in the head.
From this it is reasonable to infer that Microsoft will cease all XBOX console manufacture by 2026.
This means that they would be lying if they claimed to be working on a new XBOX console for release in 2026, as that claim would be contradicted by their lack of action in 2026. Their motive for not releasing a new XBOX console in 2026 is obvious. The XBOX brand is utterly devalued and they can do better by adopting something like:

and for those who don't want to migrate to the complex administrivia of a PC then Microsoft will have a performant Microsoft Surface Pro X that they want to sell you. They have just released a Qualcomm Snapdragon Pro X based Copilot+ and fully loaded that is just over $2,000 but it is as performant as Apple's iPad Pro with the M3 chip. This may seem like too much money, but the issue for those wanting to migrate away from an XBOX SERIES X all digital edition (and bring all of their games on their Microsoft Account to PC) is not how much that PC would cost them, but the complexity of PC ownership. They don't want to upgrade the system. They want it powerful enough for their needs and they want it to run _Office 365_ and the _Adobe_ apps, so they can do real work on it to justify it as being their sole personal computer. The screen should be OLED for watching movies on it via streaming services, and their Design Labs / XBOX Elite Controller should pair with it so that clicking on the X icon in the taskbar gets them to their Friends list to Party Up and to Jump In to Big Picture Microsoft *Games* (there should be no Windowed Mode, or ALT+TAB to cycle from a game to something else, as this needs to have direct rendering access to the screen, bypassing the slow windows system; maybe that could have been done differently, but Windows 11 contains a lot of very old code and it is not even as fast as BeOS so bypassing the desktop metaphor is essential, even if it means that Timed alerts and Notifications from the OS get suppressed whilst in game). Another thing that is needed is for Windows Update to update an inactive version of the OS and then choose when to swap over to it seamlessly, then copy itself over so there is another versions that exists for that to get an update in the background. If Firmware needs updating this could be impossible, but surely that could be automatically scheduled to a time when the OS is always online, but the user is idle. Scheduling to update Firmware at 3 am might need to be made flexible or implicitly vetoable (by user activity), as it should not matter if the OS gets updated later that week. This means Microsoft can't assume everyone is on the most recent Windows Update (which is already the case). This is a big part of administrivia that Microsoft need to address, minimise, or remove altogether and then the user experience of a Copilot+ (terrible name) will be bliss.
If you think about it Microsoft don't want XBOX gamers or their money. Once they go third party they have new customers on PS5 and Nintendo Switch who will possibly buy their better quality Microsoft *Games* and they won't want the stink of XBOX failure carrying forward, reminding customers of their failed box. When there is no more box, why call it XBOX GAMES STUDIOS. That's idiotic marketing. You want to buy _Microsoft Flight Simulator_ from Microsoft *Games* for PS5 Pro and play it via PSVR 2. Now, Microsoft make money from Sony and Nintendo consumers (they don't even make much on PC due to all the piracy there, but could possibly make a Windows Surface Pro X tablet be running an OS like iOS which has the App Store as a "Walled Garden", remember how Microsoft had malware free apps accessible to those running Windows 10 S, so it might be that they make the Trusted Program Module required by Windows 11 deviate from an open standard, like they did in attempting to get J++ to supplant JAVA, and then exclude Steam from their Windows Surface Pro X tablets, whilst keeping Steam on PC, then those who want the convenient and no administrivia are stuck paying full price for games from Microsoft *Games* Marketplace and that will include any XBOX, 360, ONE, SERIES titles that they may have bought on disc, because the Surface Pro X doesn't have disc-drive and they then need to pay to download a licenced copy of _Blinx: The Time Sweeper_ or whatever). Nothing to stop Microsoft making some profits off their extensive back catalogue. Phil's idea of letting people play their old discs for free was stupid and must have lost Microsoft a lot of money. Just look at how many times _The Last of Us_ has been remade and resold since the PS3. So, they need to kill Backwards Compatibility at some point and force those disc collectors to rebuy digital versions of their games (many will have already done so to get the "upgrade" that comes with the XBOX SERIES X all digital edition, likely due to release this November). So I expect Backwards Compatibility to be killed off in 2026 and GAME PASS to stop being sold in Q2 2025. I predict this quarter because Microsoft have committed through adverts to release upcoming titles through GAME PASS. We should expect _Call of Duty: BLACK OPS V_ to release Day & Date in GAME PASS (it is possible the annual cost will drop to $200 p.a. and the monthy subscription get hiked to $19.99 and the 3 month to $49.99 the month of its release, but no earlier). Then the terms will change so that _Fortnite, Minecraft, ROBLOX, Apex_ etc. all require GAME PASS ULTIMATE and there is no GAME PASS CORE or F2P loophole where no subscription is needed to play online. To allow F2P that means Microsoft sells an XBOX SERIES S at a loss and may not even make a little revenue from their cut of the sale of cosmetic skins, etc. This is insanity and poor business, and Phil shouldn't have allowed it for so long. Microsoft can not continue to be a charity for paupers. They need a better class of gamers who buy their games, but for their side of that relationship they need to make games which are:
- feature complete
- value for money
- compelling
- bug free

Here they have done better with Indies than their so called AAAs. However, the problem with their Indies is that they totally fail to promote them and get their potential purchasers to buy them. Sarah Bond spoke to Bloomberg very recently and completely failed to promote _Senua's Saga: Hellblade II._ There was almost no advertising for this title. Twitter barely made official mention of the game. It also shouldn't be more to buy on PC than _Helldivers 2._ Were the game $30 then it would have sold a lot more copies given its short length. Comparisons can be made with _The Order: 1886_ but that was a better game both in terms of combat, story and visuals, therefore its cost was justified despite its short length. _Hellblade II_ has over three hours of cutscenes in a six hour game. Take out the combat and there is almost an hour of walking. Just walking.

Phil needs to announce his retirement at the end of the June 9th showcase after something decent has been shown that is coming out in 2024. About the only trailer that can be 2025 would be Rare's _Everwild._ Everything else should have a date. No mention should be made of _Perfect Dark_ if it is in development hell. Microsoft shouldn't waste time with another CGI trailer, if they haven't got gameplay and a release date don't show it. This showcase also needs to be super condensed to the point it is shorter than a Nintendo Direct. This means 25 minutes tops for XBOX to pack in all their best wares. The dross can be released that day after the event in 4K60 TH-cam videos, that way the Indies will find their customers better than if they are packed into an incoherent sizzle reel. I expect Sarah Bond to present this showcase, and get more control to run Microsoft *Games* after Phil has left. I expect Sarah wants to axe the consoles Phil conceived of as part of his "power narrative" that lost out to Mark Cerny's superior Kraken decompression being about 3x more performant than SFS, etc. Indeed, Sarah shouldn't really seek to compete against anyone. The console war is over. XBOX lost. Yet along the way they did make a lot of good Microsoft *Games* so preserve those, turn Bungie's _Halo 3_ servers back on (not the flaky _Halo: The Master Chief Collection_ which is still full of bugs), then at some point port _The Halo Trilogy_ to PS5 and then do the same with _The Gears Trilogy_ and _The Forza Horizon Tetralogy_ (as Australia and Mexico were boring locations). Pivot more towards software and stop wasting money trying to sell consoles at a loss. They will have PC, Surface, PS5 and Switch to put their games on (as well as Samsung TVs), so there is no need to keep selling XBOX SERIES S or ultimately any of the other models, and so they are avoiding directly lying about some amazing XBOX INFINITY in 2026 by not officially confirming a new console, but talking about "devices" / "hardware" which is the biggest generational leap, which is this Copilot+ obviously.
1.4TF XBOX ONE S -> 6TF XBOX ONE X is a leap of x 4.285 so 12.2 XBOX SERIES X -> ? would need to be more than 12.2 x 4.285 = 52.27 which means it needs to be 54TF!!!???
That is impossible to achieve by 2026. Remember this is native GPU output, not any post-FSR upscale and frame generation. Were you to cut that in half with frame generation assumed then it would be 27TF which is easily doable as it is less performant than the expected GPU specification of the PS5 Pro. If they went for 36TF and doubled it would be a ridiculous 72TF so if you hear anything rumoured in the 60-72TF range you know that they are cheating by not talking about native pixels. As a consequence of economic reasons I really seriously doubt there will be this behemoth of a generation leap (it also can't be a handheld as they would need to have had two consoles preceding their bigger leap one), as why would anyone buy yet another "power narrative" XBOX when Microsoft have done nothing with the XBOX SERIES X and provided very few AAA games for it in it first four years on the market compared to PS5. Where is the equivalent of _Spider-Man 2_ on XBOX SERIES X?
The only conclusion to draw is that they intend to mislead their fans into thinking:
1. They aren't killing Backwards Compatibility
2. They aren't killing GAME PASS
3. They aren't closing Ninja Theory
4. They aren't closing Playground Games's second studio as soon as they complete _FABLE_
5. They aren't closing Obsidian as soon as _AVOWED_ releases
6. They aren't acquiring Steam (that is a daft rumour)
7. They aren't killing XBOX SERIES S
8. They aren't failing to deliver on a next gen XBOX in 2026
9. They aren't killing XBOX in its entireity and going third party

Xbox has the same problem PlayStation when it came to the 7th Gen, seeing PS3 and the 360's CPUs were IBM-made. emulating them on the Jaguar-based x86 processors is not efficient. Hence, only a small portion of 360 games were ever on the back-compatible list.
