Using a CNC actually IS woodworking. It is the mind of the woodworker, or the craftsman, that creates the project. The CNC is just a tool that facilitates completion of the project. Now, I don't particularlyt like watching videos of things created by CNC, because I want to see things that I can do, not what someone else can do with tools that I can't afford. That's the most common gripe with CNC use in video projects. Aside from that, this is brilliant work. I love what you've made.

    • @ZacBuilds
      @ZacBuilds  ปีที่แล้ว +105

That's how I feel too. Wood is the medium, so definitionally anyone working with wood is a wood worker. I hear you about the CNC, I try to include all sorts of different mediums and techniques in my videos so that these video are still useful for non-CNC owners. I also really like working with a CNC because I can freely and easily share my designs with other people. Entry level units that could make something like this can be had for $1000-1500, so its not like its completely out of reach for the normal person either.

Sign white acrylic would have worked for the side panels as well. It would have given in a nice shiny contrast to the wood and you could bond the edges together with acetone. Even some shallow CNC grooves for designs/patterns would look cool too. First time watching, love the content from a fellow T.O guy. Although I'm more GTA. 😃

There's this speaker company called Vandersteen that does linen wrapped speakers that have similar proportions to the Xbox. They used posts at the corners and wrap translucent black linen around them so you can see the inside of the speakers at the right angles. I think that would have been a nice halfway point between clear acrylic and the white linen covered sides.

To be honest. If anyone would like to recreate this but don't have a CNC. A router comes a long way as well. The CNC is a nice and easy thing to be able to use when it comes to more precise measurements. And it's more than valid to be using one if you happen to have it available. Why the hell wouldn't you?
If you're a purist and think that you shouldn't be using a CNC when wood working, then all good. Perfectly valid for you to do so. But using one is just as valid. Your way is your way, doesn't mean it is the same for someone else. That's part of the beauty in wood working.

Most console designs suffer from choking fans which is one of the reasons they are getting so loud under load. Some additional spacing to raise the console should prevent that. Just to add to the "woodworking with a CNC isn't woodworking" debate: I do feel that a lot of instructional TH-camrs often use tools that are out of the grasp of the amateur, but it's nice that you do show plenty of ways to do other projects sans expensive equipment. It is hard though, to see something made with a CNC and think "oh...well I can't make that because I don't have 1k for a CNC, or a festool (insert specific item here)". As a jeweler who does a LOT of 3D printing and casting, I do understand how nice it is to have a machine that accomplishes the creation of a said design, but it's still frustrating to see a video where in order to make the end result, you have to mortgage your house (assuming you own a home). Regardless of all that, I absolutely love what you've created, and I may have to mod my series X now :D. Cheers!

I don't see how anyone could argue that your not a woodworker if you use a specific machine over a bunch of other machines to achieve the same results. If you use a table saw, jointer, and sander to make your wood stuff, then your just using different equipment.
Now, in relation to using hand tools, I would say that there is a great deal of skill gained in that process, and there is a wealth of enjoyment in gaining that skill. You'd be surprised at how many people love and use hand tools almost exclusively. But that is a hobby separate from mechanical design and construction, which is basically what you do with a CNC machine as well as a table saw.
I love using hand tools. But at the same time, a CNC machine has such an attraction, I plan on one in the next few years.

It's super cool how Noctua make 5V fans, but there's one catch with that. USB charge support. When something's plugged in to a modern PC or an Xbox, it's always on, if it's a USB device that's not a human interface device (keyboard, mouse, webcam etc.). If it's just got power pins like a fan, it'll just be on all the time. If you look at a wiring diagram for the stock Xbox fan, if I were you, I'd splice the Noctua's fan wiring into the Xbox fan PWM so it ramps up when the top fan ramps up, and it's off when the console's off. Super cool build though! Love the dedication. 20 Minutes really makes a long build look like it takes no time to make, when I'm sure that's not true

Was about to say, I have the same fan plugged into the front of my system and it runs 24/7 unless you unplug it, splicing it in would be perfect for sure!

What size bit are you using for cutouts? They look fairly squared off.

So you made a replacement xbox shell, in the shape of the original shell? I mean, nice build but it seems a little redundant when, as you say, it's a good looking console as it is?

Question: Could you CNC a material like HDPE (cutting board material)? It's just such a versatile material, super strong, dense, flexible, and it looks great. Especially if you get the kind that's semi-transparent. You can make it glow with LED's, so it makes for a great diffusor. I'd like to see some projects done with HDPE, wood and brass, copper or aluminum. Just as an example, you could use HDPE in place of the fabric you used here on a similar future project.

Another guy said Japanese Lantern, the white plastic would suit that. Will be collecting some white cutting boards from the dollar store.

This is pretty dope hopefully you'll be patenting these and able to sell people cases, but I did have one question how come you just didn't use the original case for measurement?

I do recommend putting like a mesh screen or something better on the vent holes on top to avoid dust or debris from getting inside the console, but nonetheless kudos for the awesome job

Weird that he measured the internal parts but didn't bother to measure the shell itself? Also I'm confused about the fan, did he replace the stock fan or is he running a dual fan setup?

Have you noticed issues with your glue holding considering the heat the system puts out? I'd be concerned the glue could dry out then split.
