While I can only imagine what it’s like to be in their environment, as an atheist myself I always feel like I have to be prepared for the questions people have for me once they find out I don’t believe. I have been curious as to how common atheism is in other parts of the world. Hello, I want to explain why I am not believing: What is the boiling point of water ? If it is pure water under 1 atm atmosphere pressure, it is 100 degrees Celsius. You can repeat it 1000 times and you will find out that it is always the same result. But as soon as you change the atmospheric pressure, e.g. by doing the heating on mount Everest, you will find out it is boiling earlier, you can again repeat it and get the same results. By adding salt, you will find out that it is now boiling later. But under same conditions you will again get the same results. That's why it is possible to make measuring devices like a thermometer. Imagine you try to measure a temperature and you get different results under the same conditions; the measuring device would be useless. So under same conditions you get the same results F(x), under different conditions or initial variables or parameters (x) you get different results. Now to the problem, religions are promising two different results, heaven (F1) or hell (F2). What are the parameters for going to heaven (or hell), being good, having faith, being patient, being helpfull, being adequate intelligent (to have faith or not to have faith), live long enough to go to hell (babies go to heaven) etc. So, if there are two results, the initial (given) parameters (or the resultant of them) cannot be the same. So if the initial parameters for heaven or hell are differntly distributed to people, can we speak about a fair god ? Do you believe in an unfair god ? I don't.

The major problem is that every religion considers themselves the true religion. But if one religion isn't true, then none of them are. Strictly by definition I would be considered an atheist, however I don't call myself that, I don't call myself anything. I do not believe in "God" and I am not an atheist. Agnostism is about knowledge, Atheism is about Belief the two are not mutually exclusive. In every society, there is a group of religious people. I think it is one of the ways people try to find meaning in life and maintain their sanity. At the same time, atheist consider religion as something unnecessary in the society. Neither group should impose their ideology on the other. After all, everybody is free to choose what they consider right for them.

Encouraging to hear that people in Kenya are discussing the issue of Atheism. I've been an atheist for over 40 years and a Christian before that. Too many interpretations that cause suffering and pain for people that don't deserve it. Understanding the contradictions and the many interpretations makes it easier to leave. The theists that spoke have not read the bible nor understood. And they actually do not understand what atheist means! Then a man who says he's a scientist thinks a phone proves a designer. You can't speak to Christians who are believers, they are too indoctrinated.

My paternal side was mostly secular and my maternal side was mostly Christians who were Christians on Sunday or when they felt the needed to be. In the African American community it is still taboo to come out as an Atheist but they are here and there are a lot of them. If I tell someone I am an Atheist they think I worship Satan. They are more shocked when I tell them Satan doesn't exist. My deconversion happened when I stepped in a college 20+ years ago to study Cultural Anthropology with emphasis on Religion and Spirituality. I had to study many beliefs. When I realized I couldn't believe in those beliefs I evaluated Christianity and Islam further. I realized I could not believe in any supernatural claims of any religion. After reading the Bible my non belief sealed. I could no longer believe in a Jewish savior God.

I find the design system defense of God's existence null and void. If we are to argue that God exists simply because there must be a creator of the things we know to exist, then that means that God's very existence is also in question, someone or something must have created God, and that must be a bigger God than the one you claim to exist. If we adopt that argument, then we might never reconcile the superiority of God per se, as God would seem to be answerable to another power, one that brought him to existence.

While I can only imagine what it’s like to be in their environment, as an atheist myself I always feel like I have to be prepared for the questions people have for me once they find out I don’t believe. There’s inevitably someone that insists on changing my mind. Point is, eventually I was prepared and what was once an emotional subject became... boring.

Thanks. I'm an atheist from Europe, and where I live, immigrants from other continents are more religious, so it was nice to see this discussion from a show in Kenya. I have been curious as to how common atheism is in other parts of the world. But as soon as you change the atmospheric pressure, e.g. by doing the heating on mount Everest, you will find out it is boiling earlier, you can again repeat it and get the same results. By adding salt, you will find out that it is now boiling later. But under same conditions you will again get the same results. That's why it is possible to make measuring devices like a thermometer. Imagine you try to measure a temperature and you get different results under the same conditions; the measuring device would be useless.
So under same conditions you get the same results F(x), under different conditions or initial variables or parameters (x) you get different results.
Now to the problem, religions are promising two different results, heaven (F1) or hell (F2). What are the parameters for going to heaven (or hell), being good, having faith, being patient, being helpfull, being adequate intelligent (to have faith or not to have faith), live long enough to go to hell (babies go to heaven) etc.
So, if there are two results, the initial (given) parameters (or the resultant of them) cannot be the same. So if the initial parameters for heaven or hell are differntly distributed to people, can we speak about a fair god ? Do you believe in an unfair god ? I don't.

The major problem is that every religion considers themselves the true religion. But if one religion isn't true, then none of them are. Strictly by definition I would be considered an atheist, however I don't call myself that, I don't call myself anything. I do not believe in "God" and I am not an atheist. Agnostism is about knowledge, Atheism is about Belief the two are not mutually exclusive.

In every society, there is a group of religious people. I think it is one of the ways people try to find meaning in life and maintain their sanity. At the same time, atheist consider religion as something unnecessary in the society. Neither group should impose their ideology on the other. After all, everybody is free to choose what they consider right for them.
Just have to reconcile that sort of thinking. I think what is true is more important, and giving equal footing to those ideas is a bad idea.

Encouraging to hear that people in Kenya are discussing the issue of Atheism. I've been an atheist for over 40 years and a Christian before that. Too many interpretations that cause suffering and pain for people that don't deserve it. Understanding the contradictions and the many interpretations makes it easier to leave.
The theists that spoke have not read the bible nor understood. And they actually do not understand what atheist means! Then a man who says he's a scientist thinks a phone proves a designer. You can't speak to Christians who are believers, they are too indoctrinated.
Beautiful interview. I'm an African American female and I identify as an Atheist. My paternal side was mostly secular and my maternal side was mostly Christians who were Christians on Sunday or when they felt the needed to be. In the African American community it is still taboo to come out as an Atheist but they are here and there are a lot of them. If I tell someone I am an Atheist they think I worship Satan. They are more shocked when I tell them Satan doesn't exist. My deconversion happened when I stepped in a college 20+ years ago to study Cultural Anthropology with emphasis on Religion and Spirituality. I had to study many beliefs. When I realized I couldn't believe in those beliefs I evaluated Christianity and Islam further. I realized I could not believe in any supernatural claims of any religion. After reading the Bible my non belief sealed. I could no longer believe in a Jewish savior God.

I find the design system defense of God's existence null and void. If we are to argue that God exists simply because there must be a creator of the things we know to exist, then that means that God's very existence is also in question, someone or something must have created God, and that must be a bigger God than the one you claim to exist.
