I’m guessing by now y’all know just how strange the TH-cam algorithms can be in serving up what shows up on your “hey, maybe check this out” list, but I’ve just stumbled across the numerous reaction videos to this legendary performance of Bobby’s. What it find most amazing is that, IIRC, this was a segment of a live variety show hosted by a pretty decent singer in his own right, Andy Williams. As a 70+yo boomer, these type of shows - Ed Sullivan, Smothers Brothers, etc, were the fodder that were the gateway drug to my lifelong addiction to great musical performances in a wide range of genres. At the risk of crassness, this particular performance by Bobby must have left few dry eyes - and other areas of the females in the live studio audience. As many have said, in 1965 there was no technology for audio trickery that is now essentially taken for granted, and “live” meant just exactly that. There’s a reason that Bobby and Billy were bestowed the moniker of “Righteous Brothers” edit; and as I think the saying goes; hard to forget your first time

The lyrics are so beautiful. I think the younger generation does not realize - in 1966, the Vietnam War was in swing. "I'll be coming home. Wait for me." That gives the song so much more meaning.

Glad you mentioned the orchestra, absolutely fabulous. You mentioned you can’t fake talent. Well as far as I’m concerned most of the overpaid so called artists in 2023 are fakes. They aren’t a patch on Mr Hatfield. They would all have been laughed out of the studio for even daring to call themselves artists back then.
This song, Unchained Melody, was written about a man in prison who missed his lover and wondered whether she would still be his by the time he was released from prison. So it’s full of desperate longing and other strong emotions. One of the things that makes this performance even more insanely good is the fact that Bobby Hatfield’s parents were in the audience and he was concerned about singing such a passionate song in front of the them. Bobby was such an incredible singer that there was no way he would do anything other than give it his all. I was a very little girl when my family watched this episode of the Andy Williams show. I was in the audience that night with my fiancee. I was leaving for a WestPac cruise for 6 months and I proposed. It worked. When Bobby passed away, we played and danced to this song all night after dinner. Thank you Bobby ( and Bill ) for all the years of talent you've given us!!!

Bobby Hatfield died at age 63 in 2003 in Kalamazoo MI in his hotel room while touring with Bill. Only 60 minutes from my house. I almost bought tickets to that show but was toon busy. The next morning the it was on the news....I was in shock [I was a music teacher]...I can't imagine how devastated Bill was about his lifelong friend. It is amazing young people like you are discovering the Righteous Brothers and everyone of them is awe of real time live vocals and studio recordings. Little known fact, among other opening acts on the tour, is they opened for the Beatles in summer1964 on their first big American tour. They got a recording contract and had to leave the tour. Bill is still alive....
There actually were some enhancements ... like his breath control, falsetto, substain, vibrato, etc. Hehe, just goofing around, lol Yes, it's ALL natural, NO enhancements, NO after-effects, just a incredibly talented man & a simple microphone. It is actually sad that things like autotune were ever created. Using it or any after-effects is "Cheating" in my opinion. FYI, Autotune was invited in 1997, but wasn't used much at all, almost never until around 2010'-ish. So if a performance was pre 1997 You can be assured there were NO autotune or after-effect cheats used. And if a song was preformed or recorded 1997-2010-ish it was very rarely used.

I was 17 in 1965 but somehow missed this beautiful performance. I bought the Bobby Hatfield CD after hearing this in 2022. I can honestly say as beautiful as it is on the CD this live performance is a million times more phenomenal. Bobby you hit it outta the park at 25 and you will be missed forever.
I too was 17 and joined the Navy in Feb 1965, missed it as I was overseas till 1968, I have probaly watched 200 reactions to his song, love every one of them.
I remember hearing this song often in the 60s. I've always loved it. The song was highlighted in the 1990 movie Ghost starring Patrick Swayze, Whoopi Goldberg and Demi Moore.
No Autotune, no high-tech microphone.no studio backgrounds. This was just a guy with a cheap mike and the orchestra while he put it all out there. The amazing thing is that at the very last note, he is not even out of breath.

I was 9 years old when this performance was shown. Ten years later, we were still dancing to it. My old heart is so happy to see young people like you appreciating the great music of our era.
Try their songs "You Lost That Loving Feeling", "Soul And Insperation" from them in the 60's or even "Rock 'N' Roll Heaven" of the 70's which are great songs.
Bobby had just married Joy. You can hear every emotion an all his love for her in his voice. Its so sad that the marriage didn't last. But they were probably too immature. But Bobby always put all his emotion and love in every performance his whole career. ( see their performance at the RnR Hall of Fame, when they were inducted in March 2003.) Eight months later, Bobby passed away. Bobby did not just have an amazing voice, being a rare counter- tenor. His love of singing always came through. We miss him. But he left us an amazing legacy of his beautiful music.

I was 17 in 1965 but somehow missed this beautiful performance. I bought the Bobby Hatfield CD after hearing this in 2022. I can honestly say as beautiful as it is on the CD this live performance is a million times more phenomenal. Bobby you hit it outta the park at 25 and you will be missed forever.
I too was 17 and joined the Navy in Feb 1965, missed it as I was overseas till 1968, I have probaly watched 200 reactions to his song, love every one of them.
I was always amazed how easily he hit those notes with a smile on his face..lol

Back in 1965, they relied on pure talent. This is definitely one of the best songs ever recorded.
No Autotune, no high-tech microphone.no studio backgrounds. This was just a guy with a cheap mike and the orchestra while he put it all out there. The amazing thing is that at the very last note, he is not even out of breath.

I find it funny no warm up from interview...just grabbed the mic and performed it perfectly, no auto-tune, like it was so easy (which its not) for him....that song has made more conceptions happen the past 50 years then any other...lol :P

The sad part is that most people have only ever heard the record/radio versions of this - or in the movie “Ghost” and this live performance is vastly better…so much more powerful and dynamic.

I was 9 years old when this performance was shown. Ten years later, we were still dancing to it. My old heart is so happy to see young people like you appreciating the great music of our era.
Try their songs "You Lost That Loving Feeling", "Soul And Insperation" from them in the 60's or even "Rock 'N' Roll Heaven" of the 70's which are great songs.
Bobby had just married Joy. You can hear every emotion an all his love for her in his voice. Its so sad that the marriage didn't last. But they were probably too immature. But Bobby always put all his emotion and love in every performance his whole career. ( see their performance at the RnR Hall of Fame, when they were inducted in March 2003.) Eight months later, Bobby passed away. Bobby did not just have an amazing voice, being a rare counter- tenor. His love of singing always came through. We miss him. But he left us an amazing legacy of his beautiful music.
This was during the Viet Nam War, so it was played a lot! With so many guys overseas.
