I’m guessing by now y’all know just how strange the TH-cam algorithms can be in serving up what shows up on your “hey, maybe check this out” list, but I’ve just stumbled across the numerous reaction videos to this legendary performance of Bobby’s.
What it find most amazing is that, IIRC, this was a segment of a live variety show hosted by a pretty decent singer in his own right, Andy Williams.
As a 70+yo boomer, these type of shows - Ed Sullivan, Smothers Brothers, etc, were the fodder that were the gateway drug to my lifelong addiction to great musical performances in a wide range of genres.
At the risk of crassness, this particular performance by Bobby must have left few dry eyes - and other areas of the females in the live studio audience.
As many have said, in 1965 there was no technology for audio trickery that is now essentially taken for granted, and “live” meant just exactly that.
There’s a reason that Bobby and Billy were bestowed the moniker of “Righteous Brothers”

His beautiful sound was known in the 60's as "blue-eyed soul". His voice draws out emotions now, almost 60 years later, as much as it did then. Your reaction is priceless!!!
The lyrics are so beautiful. I think the younger generation does not realize - in 1966, the Vietnam War was in swing. "I'll be coming home. Wait for me." That gives the song so much more meaning.

Glad you mentioned the orchestra, absolutely fabulous. You mentioned you can’t fake talent. Well as far as I’m concerned most of the overpaid so called artists in 2023 are fakes. They aren’t a patch on Mr Hatfield. They would all have been laughed out of the studio for even daring to call themselves artists back then.
Some people think this was the greatest live vocal performance ever. I’ve never seen the intro or the outro before so I thank you for showing this. Such relaxed banter before and after that magnificent performance. Perfection is sometimes hidden in the mundane.

The Andy Williams orchestra in particular the strings section was on point with this beautiful version of 'Unchained Melody.' You add one of the greatest Tenor voices in Rock & Roll history (Bobby Hatfield) and you get what's considered to be the greatest live performance ever! Awesome reaction.
Bobby always put a lot of emotion in his songs! That's the only way both he and Bill knew how to sing. This is Bobby's song. No one can sing it as wonderful as he can!!

Bobby Hatfield died at age 63 in 2003 in Kalamazoo MI in his hotel room while touring with Bill. Only 60 minutes from my house. I almost bought tickets to that show but was toon busy. The next morning the it was on the news....I was in shock [I was a music teacher]...I can't imagine how devastated Bill was about his lifelong friend. It is amazing young people like you are discovering the Righteous Brothers and everyone of them is awe of real time live vocals and studio recordings. Little known fact, among other opening acts on the tour, is they opened for the Beatles in summer1964 on their first big American tour. They got a recording contract and had to leave the tour. Bill is still alive....
So much natural talent-no auto-tune. So much real talent in the 60s and 70s. Hope you listen to more music from that time era that so many of us grew up with.

His parents were in the audience, this is the first time they saw Bobby perform live. Keep in mind, at the time he sang this he had a cold. That's five full octaves. The last notes are off the piano keyboard. They're even high notes for a female soprano to hit. Any higher and he would have been whistling. Blue eyed soul. RIP Bobby

Yes, it's ALL natural, NO enhancements, NO after-effects, just a incredibly talented man & a simple microphone.
It is actually sad that things like autotune were ever created. Using it or any after-effects is "Cheating" in my opinion.
FYI, Autotune was invited in 1997, but wasn't used much at all, almost never until around 2010'-ish. So if a performance was pre 1997 You can be assured there were NO autotune or after-effect cheats used. And if a song was preformed or recorded 1997-2010-ish it was very rarely used.
Some of us were born into this amazing era of music. It's lovely to see the new generations love it as we still do.

This song, Unchained Melody, was written about a man in prison who missed his lover and wondered whether she would still be his by the time he was released from prison. So it’s full of desperate longing and other strong emotions. One of the things that makes this performance even more insanely good is the fact that Bobby Hatfield’s parents were in the audience and he was concerned about singing such a passionate song in front of the them. Bobby was such an incredible singer that there was no way he would do anything other than give it his all. I was a very little girl when my family watched this episode of the Andy Williams show. The movie is called unchained and the actor/singer who sings it in movie is ToddDuncan the first Black Full time employee of the NYC opera. It's a great movie to btw if ya like old black and white movies

I was in the audience that night with my fiancee. I was leaving for a WestPac cruise for 6 months and I proposed. It worked. When Bobby passed away, we played and danced to this song all night after dinner. Thank you Bobby ( and Bill ) for all the years

I was 17 in 1965 but somehow missed this beautiful performance. I bought the Bobby Hatfield CD after hearing this in 2022. I can honestly say as beautiful as it is on the CD this live performance is a million times more phenomenal. Bobby you hit it outta the park at 25 and you will be missed forever.
I too was 17 and joined the Navy in Feb 1965, missed it as I was overseas till 1968, I have probaly watched 200 reactions to his song, love every one of them.

It's so good to see the interplay between them at the start of the video. I love to see that kind of interaction. All the big bands have more than one star, and how they manage the egos is a key part of their success.
They were both the righteous brothers in that both of them truly had incredible voices although in completely different ranges. Honestly they both had amazing voices. Bill and Bobby were equally talented, but this is probably their song that had the biggest public impact.

The sad part is that most people have only ever heard the record/radio versions of this - or in the movie “Ghost” and this live performance is vastly better…so much more powerful and dynamic.

Just about every famous singer of those times made a cover of this song, but in my opinion Bobby did it best.
That little lip bite at the end, that says he knows he nailed it. When singers had to be able to sing without technology to cover for them. Magical. Watching Dolly Parton sing "I will always love you" on the Porter Waggoner show has the same effect on me. Pure and shining talent.

Bobby had just married Joy. You can hear every emotion an all his love for her in his voice. Its so sad that the marriage didn't last. But they were probably too immature. But Bobby always put all his emotion and love in every performance his whole career. ( see their performance at the RnR Hall of Fame, when they were inducted in March 2003.) Eight months later, Bobby passed away. Bobby did not just have an amazing voice, being a rare counter- tenor. His love of singing always came through. We miss him. But he left us an amazing legacy of his beautiful music.
I got to see the righteous brothers live in the front row a few years ago and to watch the one still living sit alone on stage and sing this song in memory of his partner in crime was the most moving experience I’ve ever experienced. I bawled the whole time.
