This song was written in 1955 for a movie "Unchained". It was also used in the movie "Ghost". Many artists have recorded this song. NOBODY does it like Bobby Hatfield. He passed away in 2003. RIP Bobby. Live performance. No auto tunes.

I really enjoyed your reaction to this 1965 classic live performance! Bobby was 25 years old and his mother was in the audience to see and hear them for the first time. He was a bit nervous with her being there and smiled at the end knowing he nailed it.
He makes you want to go back in time, doesn't he? I love it that most young women reacting to the Righteous Brothers are feeling what we felt back then. These two were God given talents and then he broke the mold. Thank you for delving back to the time when music was pure.

These guys actually did kid around on stage and talked to the audience between numbers. 'Unchained Melody' was a song Bobby had been singing before the Righteous Brothers got together and he chose it to be his solo on the album Bill was producing ... Bill produced all their albums even when they were with Phil Specter, the hot-shot 'boy-wonder' producer of the sixties. Bill not only produced it, he played piano on the original studio version and sang backup. (You can just hear him in the beginning bars on the record). The high notes at the end were Bobby's own innovation and many singers after him tried to emulate him.
The great Righteous Brothers I listened to when I was in high school. I was 15 yrs old when Bobby sang this song live on the Andy Williams show. I own every record album they made during the 60's. So many memories. RIP Bobby! We miss your beautiful voice!

This is the incomparable Counter Tenor voice of the late great Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. Performed (Live) 59 years ago on the NBC Andy Williams Television Show. This performance of music composers Alex North and lyricist Hy Zaret was originally written for the (1955) Movie "Unchained." It's about a minimum-security prison for prisoners living unchained with no prison cells. And in (1965) ten years later this live version and performance by Bobby Hatfield and the NBC Studio Orchestra has become the quintessential version of them all.
This arrangement and version by the NBC Studio Orchestra and the beautiful voice of Bobby Hatfield has made this the greatest live performance in Televison history.

This may be the best live musical performance ever. The studio version of this song is good, no doubt about that, I think most people have heard it at one time or another and virtually everyone would agree it was a good performance.
This here was so much more, I never fully appreciated this song until I heard this epic performance.
Now of course I understand the backstory a bit and I know this was apparently the first time his mother had ever been able to hear him perform live. Makes sense, he pulled out all the stops, he gave this his all and it's just superb in every way. Being able to see it as opposed to just hearing it, it gives you an appreciation for the the skill and precision he used to execute this. Just great in every conceivable way.

Song was written in the 50’s and it was sang in a movie by a prison inmate. It has since been done 3 times. It was in top 20 by two different people. However, NOBODY ever sang it like Bobby Hatfield and probably never will again. In the studio version he does not go into the two last highs. He is two octaves lower on finishing. But this is how he wanted to do it and he nails it LIVE on tv without any technology on one take. Way to go Bobby! Magical!

The song was originally written for, and sung in the 1955 movie 'Chained'. It was a prisoner singing his love for his girlfriend he could not see. It was this version 10 years later, that became a hit when Bobby sang it. He was so nervous at 23 years old, as his parents were in the audience, but he did a terrific job. The best version ever!
After that performance there wasn't a dry seat in the house.

I am a Boomer . I am so glad I grew up to listen to the best songs of rock and pop in history. Nobody outdoes Bobby in this performance. He set The bar so high. I have never heard anyone equal it in any song. There are a lot that came close to the bar but None is better than Bobby. He earned the gold medal of all time for male singers.

Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher counter tenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song.
*In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63.
The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side.
* The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and before he left he said, 'No, I can do it better. ’And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song."
* This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof."

Taking in to consideration this is the best preference live no gimmick no redos it was on live tv. I went to my parents house to visit and they loved this show, i still remember the look on there faces. That is in my memories for ever
Bill was joking about the “Hit“. They actually flipped a coin, and Bobby won the chance to sing it. (they always did solo performances on their album live concerts) You can’t go wrong with the suggestions from Your other viewers, as they pretty much never made a bad song. They had a lot of big hits but, some of the Less known songs are very surprising! Yeah, when you hear them together, you’re gonna be stunned!

This song originally came from a 1955 prison movie titled "Unchained." It reflects how much the main character misses his wife while he's in prison. In the movie, it was sung by Todd Duncan who was the first black singer to appear in the New York City Opera.

It sounded so much different than when Bobby performed it live in 1965. Probably the GOAT live performance, no sound filters, no autotune, just live vocals.
