I think if they cleaned up Ramsley's motivation with him killing Elizabeth since he sees her as nothing more than a gold digger that will destroy the reputation of the Gracey Family, but comes to regret this when he finds Master Gracey's body and decides to make his master's wish come true even if he has to force the bride to the altar, then it would help the audience follow along and even humanize him a bit in showing that he does genuinely care about Master Gracey while also still showing that he has an evil person.

I think blending horror and comedy is totally feasible - the rides seem to manage it just fine imo, and plenty of actual horror movies have good comedic relief, but I do think Eddie Murphy’s brand was not the right style for this movie. That being said, let’s be honest, the prelude flashback is the best part of the movie and they should have made the whole thing about that

I really agree with what you said about how there are some really cool things in this movie, but you have to get through a lot of lame stuff. Personally i love this movie despite the lame stuff cause I basically just ignore it the best I can. I really enjoy those first 3 minutes of the movie, and i will watch it on repeat cause I just love how mysterious and sad it is, and then i pay attention mostly to the Gracey Elizabeth/Sarah plot. The other stuff is okay, but not my favourite. I really wish they'd have added more about the ghosts and gone more into Gracey and Elizabeths story in the past rather that just being told how much Gracey loved Elizabeth.

Ignoring the lame stuff just to enjoy the movie. Something we really all need to do as nowadays it’s just nitpicks after nitpicks. Films that aren’t really as bad when you have a more open mind or zen-like overview are always seen as “worst movies ever” because of the questionably minor bad stuff. No one can enjoy a film without needlessly searching for flaws.

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

I’m gonna be honest here. When I was little, I used to watch the little mermaid on repeat, people thought that that was my favorite movie, but it wasn’t, I only watched it because my sisters, grandmother and aunt didn’t want to watch the haunted mansion lol
But whenever I could, I watch the haunted mansion, I didn’t get much of the story because I was little, but oh boy, the aesthetics ⚫️👄⚫️
I loved everything about the mansion, and (weirdly enough) the back story of the Master (that somehow that was one of the few things I did get) idk y, but I’ve always been drawn to ghosts and the tragic backstories™️ that they had. So, the haunted mansion was indeed my favorite, I still watch it to these day and I’m obsessed with the rides and their lore, unfortunately I live in Mexico, and I haven’t even put a step on any Disneyland parks... I don’t remember where I was going with this... oh well... good video!!

What if The Haunted Mansion was a bit similar to Beetlejuice? Like more of a straight up comedy with a dark edge and Gothic atmosphere?

I'd LOVE a Phantom Manor movie. They could give it a sort of Hammer Horror sensibility. (Unfortunately, Sir Christopher Lee is no longer around to step into his old pal Vincent Price's shoes and play the Phantom.)

i grew up watching this all the time on dvd and fell in love with the atmosphere. the music, ambiance, and setting are comfy but also edgy for a disney movie. the fact that they decided to feature a Black family in a 2003 film about a theme park ride and basically have the catalyst revolve around a hate crime is a strong move. fits within the historical louisiana backdrop. tarot cards, fortune tellers, masquerade balls, mausoleums, all that jazz.

  • @lauriesmith4575
    @lauriesmith4575 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

The only thing I liked about the movie was the beginning. I would definitely pay to see a film about strictly Master Gracey and Elizabeth. The opening was absolutely beautiful, especially the way they used the tarot cards and candelabra, and I liked the way they used the ballroom ghosts when Gracey tried to convince Sarah that she was Elizabeth, but other than that, this film was horrid in so many ways.

Agreed with you on everything pertaining to Eddie Murphy. It's not that comedy wouldn't fit well with the Mansion, it's just that Eddie Murphy's BRAND of comedy doesn't. And I TOTALLY agree on the cookie-cutter "workaholic-parent-needs-to-learn-to-value-their-family" theme. The best analogy I can think of is mixing the pieces of two different jigsaw puzzles together and expecting them to all make one big puzzle.
By contrast, there's the more recent Haunted Mansion Marvel comic...the protagonist is a teenage boy who's dealing with a loss of his own (his beloved grandfather), and this plays into the theme of ghosts/the afterlife.
So...why not have "dealing with loss and death" be the overarching theme here? Instead of the main character's wife, make Sarah the daughter (mid-twenties or so) of a man who's just lost his beloved wife, and the two are struggling with the loss. Then something brings them both to the Mansion (which I'd rather be the WDW mansion in the Hudson River Valley--fall in upstate New York would be a perfect Halloweeny setting). Keep the Gracey plot (mostly) the same, but play up the parallels between the widowed father's loss and Edward's, and make that a key point of the confrontation at the end. ("I know what you're going through, Edward...you lost the person who meant the world to you. You lost her so suddenly and so unfairly and it destroyed you. And you'd do anything, anything at all to have a chance to be with her again.") We could still have humor here and there--the sort of dark humor that pervades the ride--but this might have given the movie an emotional resonance the original didn't have.

If I could change one thing, I would appoint Barry Sonnenfeld as the director (he did the Addams Family movies, Men In Black, RV, Wild Wild West). He isn’t always putting out profound work, but his movies are always reliably clever and funny and those to me are the biggest things that I think a movie like The Haunted Mansion was desperately in need of.

I am with the haters but it’s like the film had wasted potential for the exact reasons you said. We had this film on DVD too (we lost it). But as for the remake, given the screenwriter Disney chose was the one from Ghostbusters 2016 and given her body of work, I don’t think the remake’s story will be good.

Ghostbusters 1985 was a horror comedy that works, but even they struggle to get the Ballance to work in gb 2 and gb 2016, so your description of h. Mansion having the same balance issue makes sense. You really need the right writers and directors, and you are still not guaranteed it will work .

My history with this movie has been challenging. As a kid, I was genuinely terrified and I never watched again but as I got older I decided to at least give it a chance and from there my perspective has changed. I humbly lou the effort it took making the film, the casting for Ramsely, Gracey and Sarah/Elizabeth was perfect and the special effects at the time were very impressive. But.....the issues were always not far. I've seen Jennifer Tilly in other movies and she can act very well, however her portrail as Madame Leota wasn't really great. I believe she was trying her best but the movie's comedic tone really dwindled her character and it's so incomparable to the original. Wallace Shawn was trying to do his own thing but it really doesn't fit and I think Some Jerk with a Camera said it at best: "he's many things all of them wonderful, but he's not scary." And now Eddie Murphy..........................oh lord help me. Now I love some of Murphy's work from SNL to Daddy Day Care and yes Norbit but he's relying too much on the comedy while he should focus more on the horror cause this is THE HAUNTED MANSION for crying out loud. Something tells me that he might've been brought on board last minute. Again from Some Jerk with a Camera, his role was really more suited for Tim Allen or somebody else. Murphy did tried his best but it drastically didn't work. As much as I bash on the movie, I do think it's still watchable especially during Halloween and still has redeeming qualities but I wish it was done better and hopefully a reboot can do the attraction justice.

Oh! I can't stay mad at this movie! It has its flaws, don't get me wrong, buuuuuut it basically started my love for the Haunted Mansion, which kicked off my love of the horror genre. I rode the ride when I was about 2 years old, and again at 4 years old. Words cannot describe how much I hated this ride. I did not like scary things when I was younger, even if just a little bit scary, I was not about that life, so when I ride this ride that actually puts you face to face with ghosts, FUUUUUUCK THAT!
So I watch this movie with my family, terrified of the unspeakable horrors to come. And, yeah. I was scared by it. My father said he would tell me when to close my eyes to avoid the scary parts, because he and my mother had already seen it... Unfortunately, there was a tiny bit of an oops, because he forgot about easily the scariest part in the film, the mausoleum, which kicked off my hatred of skeletons... I grew out of that hatred, too, don't worry.
So I was terrified by the film at a very young age, but so thankful that the overwhelming amount of comedy was there to keep me from shitting my pants, otherwise I would have bowed out by the half-way point.
SO! I liked the film, and it was probably thanks to those whacky antics of the Evers, and also I watched Princess Bride a lot when I was younger, so Wallace Shawn was a very welcome addition.
Anyway, as said before, I like the film, but throughout my life it was difficult to watch it again because I was just so spooky scared by it! Those skeletons, man! Just! So! SCARY! But I eventually braved up and watched it a few times when it was shown of Disney Channel, and at some point, I got on TH-cam to check out the behind the scenes, which I found fascinating. And I look at the side bar for some similar videos and find a documentary on the making of the ride. I had been ok at best with the ride at this point, but I still wasn't huge into riding it several times a Disney World trip.
When I watched the Documentary about the ride, I was so enamored with it, I couldn't believe how much detail went into this ride, and how fascinating the history of it was. I couldn't help but search more about it. I didn't think about it back then, but I was starting to realize how much of an artform theme parks could be. And now I'm the biggest Haunted Mansion fan in my family, I have 5 Haunted Mansion posters hanging up in my room, the soundtrack on CD, and other such nonsense involving it.
In short, this film not only basically started my love for the Haunted Mansion but also kinda my love for theme parks in general. And for that, I owe this god damn movie my life, even if it is kinda goofy.
Also Tomorrowland is a masterpiece, fight me.

There's also a little bit of historical inaccuracy in the backstory. They only obliquely brought up the race issue, glossing it over as "she's too lower-class to marry into the Gracey family". But Edward was clearly willing to marry a mixed-race woman...the problem with that is, wasn't interracial marriage actually ILLEGAL in the South in the 1890s? Indeed, until Loving v. Virginia in 1967? I'm not sure what the status was in the Northern states or elsewhere in the country, but this was clearly in Louisiana (after Disneyland's mansion). It's been a long time since I've seen the movie--was there any indication that Edward was planning to leave Louisiana and his ancestral home behind to begin a new life elsewhere with Elizabeth?

I grew up watching this film and enjoyed it a lot as a kid. I have moments in which I wanna watch it now as an adult and enjoy it for the nostalgia factor, but I can recognize now that it's not a very good film. It's sorta a guilty pleasure now. I know they're going to make a new one, and I pray that it's, ya know, GOOD. But considering that most remakes from Disney lately have been terrible, I'm concerned that they're gonna do it dirty all over again. What I think they did right thought with the 2003 film was Master Gracey. His character was on point, and any scenes with him were my favorite. If only they could capture that again, and tone down on the wacky-silliness, I think they'd have a better film. I think where they went wrong was they captured the wrong type of comedy. The Haunted Mansion ride, while silly and family-friendly, it has more tongue-in-cheek darker puns rather than true wackiness that you would find in other family-friendly comedies.
P.S. I will forever be devastated that Guillermo del Toro's version of the Haunted Mansion never came to light. It probably would've been stunning.

I watched this and the newer Haunted Mansion movie recently and liked this much better. I found Eddie Murphy’s character and quips much more likable than Owen Wilson’s. But the end of the movie, I was sick of him. The newer included some more backstory, but the focus was still Ben and the family. Interesting parallels between the two movies-men dealing with grief, families with something wrong, someone buying the mansion.

The main character is a hard working freelance janitor who is given a lucrative job that involves cleaning and preparing the Hatchaway Manor for a Constance Hatchaway. However it turns out that Constance is an evil ghost who has gotten lonely and wants the janitor for her dark ritual that will give her a body and a chance to make an heir to her ill gotten riches.

I just watched it today on a whim. The first time I watched it many years ago I thought it was pretty stupid and perhaps someone should have kept that money in the bank instead. But after watching it a second time it wasn't bad. Not really good. But not bad.
I can't really put my finger on what it was missing.
The easy way out is to say that someone should have been cast instead of Murphy. And yes, there's a bit too much of Murphy being Murphy in the movie. It distracts a bit but only because we know Eddie Murphy and how he is.
The kids? Well, the kids were the kids. They determined what their strength and weakness were and what hurdle one had to get over and activated them when it was time. There's nothing new there.
The wife? It seemed that she was underutilized and there to fill a spot.
The butler was wonderful and carried the movie.
It seemed like they didn't want to give too much away and they succeeded. We were given a basic outline of what was going on and that was about it. I can kind of see why the ghost in the house was there. I have no idea why the madam was there and continues to hang around. Why would the family want to carry around 3 singing busts? And why was the ghost in the Cemetary hanging around?
The curse? How does one get caught up in the "the curse" where they're doomed to roam the Earth forever at this mansion?
And the largest question... Why do ghost not seem to care about keeping a clean house? All they have to do is hold a few dusters and fly around everything. Yet the house is filthy. Just one room a day and the place would be spotless.
