Other than the fact that her presence wasn't explained, Madame Leota was my favorite part of the Haunted Mansion movie. It's a guilty pleasure of mine to rewatch it around Halloween just to watch her scenes.
I love the way the entire Seance Room is framed. When you're first coming into the room you're facing the back of the chair, obstructing your view of Leota's ball, so you don't know who is speaking, but new riders would possibly presume the character speaking to be sitting in the chair, however as you slowly get a better view of the chair, you realize that she isn't in the chair, and you still don't have a great shot of the ball, so it's currently still a disembodied voice until finally, your Doom Buggy gets far enough along to see her face in the ball, and it leaves the new riders in awe at how fantastic of an effect it is. And also you go around the room staring at her from all sides, creating an even more impressive illusion than you would realize at first glance. This scene is brilliant.
From a technical standpoint, too, it's pretty amazing (like most of the Mansion, but still). Both the floating ball and the levitating seance props are some of the most solid examples of the black art principle in entertainment today, and are extremely well-puppeteered. Add in Eleanor Audley's chilling performance and it's honestly just a knockout scene altogether.

out of all her stories, I like the haunted mansion video game the best. Her story is that she was once a member of the Order of Shadows but when she realized they were using her clairvoyance for dark purposes, she ran off to protect the weapon in the game the beacon of souls along with it's power source the soul gems. The mansion was owned by a living couple who lived happily with the 999 happy haunts and Leota lived with them, but when Atticus found her, he killed the masters of the house and corrupted the ghosts of the mansion, Leota took solace in her crystal ball after hiding the beacon and the gems, giving them to specific ghosts to protect them (the duelist, opera singer, old lady, organist, knight, and finally the pirate captain who holds the key to Atticus thorn's hideout in the mansion).
I feel like this story gives Leota a lot more depth and explains why she was in her crystal ball and shows her good nature.
Madame Leota's an interesting character for me. I love the fact that she was also featured in Once Upon a Time and with powers too. I'm curious tho if she's a indeed witch or just a psychic

Madame Leota was coining the phrase Memento Mori before it was cool
Psychics and Mediums were highly regarded in the Victorian Era and are haunted house staples. During those times, death was an everyday occurrence and many victorians wished to speak to loved ones who passed on. Mediums used talking boards, tarot cards, and crystal balls to contact spirits from beyond. Madame Leota is a strange case, I personally don't think that she's "trapped" or confined to a singular crystal ball. She was a psychic medium, and I think that the crystal balls in the Haunted Mansion's story across all parks are a "window" into the spirit realm and are used in different ways: You can look into them from a medium's perspective and see into the spirit realm, or spirits that are already in the realm can look out from the crystal ball into the mortal realm. Or maybe it's like a television broadcast, projecting her magic across time and space to draw spirits to each respective mansion. So when she died, Leota could still use the crystal balls a conduit for seances and summoning the dead. That's why we see her in ALL mansions. She's just poking her head out and welcoming guests and ghosts to the mansion.
Another story I heard follows not the mansions built in chronological order, but instead via their architecture and real-life American Histories. She possibly immigrated from Europe where much witchcraft originates. She first settled in Salem Massachusetts, but had to flee to the Hudson River Valley (confirmed to be Liberty Square) after the Witch Trials began. There she set up Memento Mori, and began conducting seances at the Gracey Manor (WDW's Haunted Mansion)
But perhaps the Graceys fled because of their haunted estate, and travelled south to New Orleans and lived in a mansion there. (Disneyland's Mansion) She travelled by her gypsy wagon, and also performed services for the people of New Orleans. But then, she managed to venture out west, and provided services to the people of Thunder Mesa and the Ravenswood Family at their Manor. (Disneyland Paris Phantom Manor) but then perhaps retired back to the Gracey Manor in Liberty Square where her grave rests in the cemetery, making her truly a witch who lived a very long and supernatural life.
I hope someday we could get a concrete storyline for Madame Leota, and frankly I still enjoy Jennifer Tilly's interpretation. 🔮

To me at least I to the time differences maybe as Madame Leota had some how been able to live longer than most people. I think that what she was wearing on her head is just a head wrap.

There isn’t any backstory to the painting since officially that painting is not meant to be master Gracey. Master Gracey is just a reference on a tombstone to one of the imagineers working in the ride. Master Gracey doesn’t mean the master of the house it’s just a title to man that’s to young to be called mister. The portrait is just meant to be a young man that ages into a skeleton on the painting
