  • The devil is in the details. Lots of notching, cutting and welding in this weeks episode as we approach a major checkpoint in the build! Connecting the rear and front of the truck permanently.

    I’m sorry but that cab cage needs to be redone. Get rid of the dead tubes and tuck it tight against the cab. Look up how the professionals build it and copy their design. You guys have all the right parts but that cage is lacking, yeah it’s probably strong enough but the fit and finish could be 10x better if you put the time into it. I believe a few companies offer a complete wiy cab cage for these trucks also. Not hating,I just think you should reevaluate the cage. It’ll be 100% worth it

      100% Agreed here! Wrote the same comment then scrolled down and saw yours. This cage will work about as well as OceanGate's submersible.

      Yea not seeing what you guys are looking at. The cage is unfinished, the “dead tubes” that I think you are talking about are all getting tied in.
      It’s full of straight DOM and Chromoly. It’s strong as F

      @@MerricksGarage look at your B Pillar junction at the top specifically at 1:17 of this video. The tube coming from the C pillar to the B pillar should land on your B pillar halo tube. Not the plate you welded so that it lands somewhere. Then your down tube from center of vehicle up to the top of the B pillar should land at the same junction as the tube coming from the C pillar to the B pillar, creating a properly triangulated cage. The material you're using by itself is strong, but in an impact this is going to fold itself up like a piece of paper.

    Seems like a lot of extra weight that doesn't need to be there. All that steel looks heavier than the normal stock C-channel or Box frame that would be sticking out of the truck back there. The whole point of making it tube frame is to make it lighter. It looks awesome; but you guys should be using engineering software to map this out in the most efficient way possible, as far as material needed. It looks heavy.

      The back half is still pretty light. Jon and I can still pick it up easily. Also, being a crewcab getting that 60/40 rear bias means more weight needs to move to the back. I am not as concerned with weight as much as I am with safety for this prerunner. The 454 lsx will make it go

      @@MerricksGarage It's a sick truck.. There's no doubt about that.

    • @mikeb593

      The point is to make it stronger. It gets loaded with spare tires, a big fuel cell, tools, ect. Plus the axle bumps (bottoms out) out on it and the shocks/coilovers are mounted to it. Way stronger than any stock frame if designed properly.

    You really need to redo that cab cage, there are a bunch of dead tubes leading to nowhere. Hopefully the customer never needs to use it because, it will fold in on itself. Do yourself and your customers a favor and take a step back and research what triangulation and roll cage building really means. This isn't it.

    • @MerricksGarage
      @MerricksGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s fine. Everyone making judgements on a cage that isn’t finished. There is a crap ton of triangulation in here.
      Don’t even know where to start with the dead tube comments. There is one supporting / spanning tube off the rear shock that I guess would qualify as a dead tube but it’s not for safety it’s for stress relief from shocks.
