Enjoyed your review. I'm the original owner of a 2004 GTI VR6 2.8L 6-speed manual. I do ~90% of the maintenance myself and use OEM or OEM+ parts. I stay away from performance parts. The car is a daily driver. Currently troubleshooting a suspected vacuum leak with no check engine light and no engine codes, just a hissing sound under the hood. In the near future I intend to pull it into the garage for in depth preventative maintenance. Timing chain, engine mounts, serpentine belt, tensioner, replace all coolant hoses, fans, control module, vacuum hoses, ignition system, brake booster, track down a suspected oil leak possibly in the secondary air system, clutch replacement, control arms, springs, shocks, wheel bearings, brake fluid flush, triodes, bushings linking the stick shift to the shift cable, thermostat backlighting, puddle light, repaint front & rear bumper, door handles and mirror caps, refurbish the OEM wheels. This will cost more than the car is worth, but if I'm successful, it should last another 150K. The upside: the cost avoidance of buying a new car and the enjoyment of a well built VW that stands the test of time. BTW, there's a silver R32 in my area near Edwards AFB, CA.
@@RedondoBeach2 sounds like you have a pretty big project coming up! Best of luck with the maintenance, should be pretty strait forward but will take some time to do. Is well worth doing all of it if you plan on keeping the car long term. My car is the red on and I’m planing on doing all the maintenance and fully building my motor for boost. Should be fun
I bought my BMP R32 new in 2004 and I still love it. It's a little dinged up and the roof's clear coat is destroyed but it still runs great. Great vid.

My headliner is just now starting to fail since it has been parked outside the house in the heat. I don't believe it's a con since I never heard any issues with the local R32 folks with theirs.
A blue mk4 r32 was my dream car back in the day but now I drove around in a silver 15 reg Octavia vrs diesel lol as even tho I'd love the golf I don't think id quite cope with the running costs lol
I did the colorMFA on my R32 and its magical, also swapping in a sony Android Auto head unit made it feel almost as modern as my Mk7 GTI technology-wise.
Good to see you still whipping the R! I followed you pretty closely back when I was on Instagram, just had my TR resprayed and it’s been sitting pretty safe in the garage since. Regarding cons, namely 3, talking to anyone at a auto parts store is such a hassle lol - explaining that it’s not a Jetta never gets old haha. Keep taking good care of her man!

I completely second this auto parts store comment! I’ve owned mine since 2008. But nowadays that’s not so much an issue since I know better. OEM or OEM + vibes only is the way to go. Although, I am eyeballing this guys steering wheel and thinking I kinda need it..

The new DSG MK7 and mk8 are Amazing! I tell people if you want to go for performance the 100% buy the DSG version. They are super fun and really fast! I want to do a comparison video once the weather gets nice

Hey, I have that same shirt... OH! And I also have an R32, and I have to say, Rarity does not directly translate to either value or desirability. Cloth seats is not more desirable than leather no matter how rare they are. Mine is white, and I love it. I don't care how rare it is. I have a RUF supercharger on mine. Please don't be that guy and ask "why not turbo?" I like it better. I have Bilstein coilovers and supersprint headers, cat delete, thicker sway bars, ignition/spark cut shifting aluminum A arms... and probably a bunch more junk I cant remember right now. Does that make mine more valuable? I mean how many other R32s are like mine? Just fuckin with you man. great vid... NOW PAINT YOUR CAR!
Haha thank you man! Ya it doesn’t necessarily increase the value is right. I love supercharged R32s! I have a VF engineering stage 2 supercharged R32! I absolutely loved that car! Wish I never sold it. But yes my nee R32 needs a paint job bad lol

I had number 54 of 200 delivered in Australia. It was in the blue and to this day was by far the best car I've owned and I've had an A45, FN2 Type R, new Civic Type R. Yes it didn't have the technology inside the car but the smiles I got from driving the car the excitement I got when I was getting into that car and just about to start it I never got again with any other hatch I owned. I'd say 1 other con though and it might be just an issue in Australia but when I owned my one i needed to change the discs all round and pads and that exercise cost me $4000. But was all worth it till I fell asleep on the wheel and went head on with a bus and completely destroyed the car. If I find another clean example here I will buy it and restore it.
Oh wow! That’s sad to hear what happened to the car! Thankfully you are ok! Ya here in the US I got new rotors and pads for like $1,200 USD so it’s really not that bad at all. OEM would be around $1,500 so it’s not to bad. Hopefully you do find one someday and bring it back to life!

Great video, but you missed a major CON of owning this car. That is simply that so many other MK4's seem to now have the aftermarket R32 bumper kit and it makes it harder to stand out at events unless you pop the hood or people know what they are looking at.
Thanks man! Idk it doesn’t really bother me. I have seen lots of fake R32s, I look at it more as a complement that they wish there GTI or Golf was a R32. I’d much rather deal with a fake R32 front bumper kit then explaining over and over again at car meets that my R32 is a Volkswagen... not a Nissan GTR lol that always bothered me lol
Great video, greetings from the UK, I had a Mk 4 Golf V6 4Motion with about 200bhp, don't know if this appeared in the US? Bit less performance but a decent car that I owned for a long time. Mint R32s are rare here in the UK.
I own a blue 04 R32 and a green 94 Corrado R32 swap. You could say that I’m a fan. My R32 has full exhaust front to back. Corrado has the same but single pipe instead of dual. Sounds completely different.
Bought mine in 2010. Had it for 7 months and someone hit me and totaled in on NYE. Still my favorite car I've owned. Would like to own another one some day.

Lol since I made this video prices have gone bananas… if you want a R32 with 120,000 miles your looking around $20k. Anything under 100,000 miles is going for mid to high $20k
Found this video as there's an R32 for sale locally that's been on the market for YEARS. (900+ days according to the listing) The price keeps getting lowered, which has me looking at videos like this, trying to find out why this car hasn't sold. After watching this, I have a MUCH better idea of what to look for, should I decide to buy it. Too bad it's a DSG and not a manual....

Yo Suku all I can say is I wish you luck. VW stopped manufacturing then like last year and the only OEM ones you can find are off crashed or high mile R32s that are being parted out. I’d say look on Facebook groups that’s probably your best bet.
Since the exhaust note is the #1 pro, what exhaust systems sound the best? The black one you played as the example was stock by looking at the tips, but was it resonated or any downpipe modification? I have talked to R32 owners that have said the stock exhaust is the best sounding if want to keep the wookie sound, do you find that to be true?
Yep the car was stock exhaust with resonator delete and flapper mod. I had forced induction on my last R32 and I had the CTS exhaust which I loved. Just really depends what you are looking for. My new R32 is stock exhaust for now.
@@ThreePedalGarage I had a feeling that the resonator was deleted, because mine is bone stock and does not sound that throaty. Keep up the R32 content it's great for us to see! I would like to see an entire segment dedicated to R32 exhausts. There are plenty of clips out there but nobody goes into any detail, and since it's the #1 pro to owning an R32 it would be a great addition.
@@oldkid6 Miltek is the most popular. I prefer the Flomaster. It's an American brand. But there's quite a few others in the market. You have to decide what works for you. I suggest you upgrade the pipes to 75mm. It will really be throaty then. I drive a 2.8L 24V. I have had the cats removed and replaced with fibre glass mufflers. I went for a more restrictive rear silencer to tone it down. It has a nice rumble without being too aggressive. Good luck deciding.
Are you in Europe? The US only got the mk4 R32 in 4 colors and it wasn’t white. I think Europe got a white option. The MK5 R32 came in white in the US.
Had mine for 13 years, kept it fairly stock,(HPA SS, APR reflash) Bought it new for $29K in 2004, sold it in 2017 with 88,000 miles on it for $19K!! Loved the sound, (so did my wife) but once I got the EV bug, it just felt laborious for daily driving, but felt bad I wasn't driving it anymore. So I sold it to help pay for my Model 3. Loved the experience of the R32, and proud to say it was my last gas car.... go out with a roar!!!
Andrew Wenman yea I know some stuff can still get from dealer but it’s not cheap I had order the oem wheels and the oem bbs and it was over 2k for each set.
ECU failed on my R32 for no reason. It wouldn't give out EML and EPC upon ignition and hence, crank /no start situation. Swapped the ECU , fired up straight away. Wonder if any of the owners here had the same problem. Btw, what exhaust is the black one using. Decat ?? 🤘🤘 Proud R32 owner ✊✊✊

Always loved the R32's. I liked the interior and backend of the mark 5 a tad more, but as you're probably aware they only came in that damned DSG, and I ain't bout that life. Manual all day!
@@yt2530 Basically from what I read north America, mainly US, got the DSG when the MK5 came out. Americans don't like to drive stick and it's not a big enough market I guess these days, it's sad tbh

Getting the MKIV R32 to the U.S. in any shape or form was an ordeal, the fans wanted both Manual and DSG, but U.S. dealers were reluctant to bring them at all, in fact the original 5000 U.S. allotment was supposed to be sold over the span of two years, as they expected that people wouldn't want to pay $27-28K+ for a Golf. Its also the reason a lot of the standard and optional equipment from other markets didn't make it over either; the HID lights with headlamp washers (weren't exactly up to U.S. specs, didn't stop people from getting them aftermarket), the 5 door option , the various interior colors and trim (in other markets they had colors other than black as well as different surfaces including alcantara suede), were left out of the U.S. market. All 5000 were sold in a little over a year. Next time around with the MKV the fans again wanted an equal split of DSG and manual transmission R32s. The N.A. MKV came with DSG while the MK2 TT 3.2 came with the manual. The next Golf R (MKVI) was manual only in the U.S. It wasn't until the MKVII that they offered both manual and DSG in the U.S., and also made the Golf R more readily available in the U.S. versus only one year during the generation. The MKVIII will also be available with the choice of DSG or manual, where as some markets will only get DSG. Not quite dead yet in the U.S., but fewer cars are available will manual these days.
Con: Outdated infotainment system. It's a silly gripe. I've got an '01 Alpine head with AI-net and can play my phone through the stereo just fine. You don't always need the latest gizmos that will just break in ten years.
pxgq55a I was referring to the OEM head unit. No connection at all. Yes the aftermarket radio would be a perfect upgrade. Just something to attach so you can listen to music on your ohone
I guess everyone has their own viewpoint. I know people who would gladly pay $25k for a lower milage R32. I personally bought my first R32 for $20k and it was nice having a low milage R32 but it’s nowhere near the same as having a higher milage R32 you can drive and enjoy. That’s my viewpoint behind it.
There's no cons only pros in owning a MK4 R32 I owned one and wish still had her, wish I never lost my Deep Blue Pearl Super Charged MK4 R32! The original R!
I’m the US we only got the DSG transmission. In the rest of the world you got the option of manual or DSG. One of the big reasons why the MK5 R32 in the US aren’t as desirable. But they are still really good cars

@@spd7881 yes you can for sure but people sell fake parts so you may not be getting an OEM part when doing it that way. We also have companies such as ECSTUNING and FCP Euro that provide all the parts you really need for the R32 still.
Yes they are made in Europe not in the US. We only got the DSG MK5 R32. The MK5 has not held there value as well as the MK4 and here they aren’t as desirable.

I too am experiencing the pixel issue on that center gauge display. In my case seems to only be an issue as temps warm up because with cooler winter temps it doesn't fade. Good video...it hit some good key points!
I have been using my mk5 r32 as a daily fo years. Bought it for a winter beater and parked it for the summer for most its life. Now I just run it hard to keep miles off my other cars.

It's an easy diy fix, took me about a day the first time, would take 3 hours max now. Looks and smells like new for years to come.
The mk4 R32 is my absolute dream car... I currently own a mk4 Gli 6 speed in beautiful red.. I love driving it when its running ❤

I bought a new DBP in July 2004.. and it had the cloth inserts. I had NO idea it was *that* rare.
Yep the cloth seat were the stock seats but almost everyone upgraded to leather seats which makes the cloth seats rare today

Great video, but you missed a major CON of owning this car. That is simply that so many other MK4's seem to now have the aftermarket R32 bumper kit and it makes it harder to stand out at events unless you pop the hood or people know what they are looking at.
Thanks man! Idk it doesn’t really bother me. I have seen lots of fake R32s, I look at it more as a complement that they wish there GTI or Golf was a R32. I’d much rather deal with a fake R32 front bumper kit then explaining over and over again at car meets that my R32 is a Volkswagen... not a Nissan GTR lol that always bothered me lol
Great video, greetings from the UK, I had a Mk 4 Golf V6 4Motion with about 200bhp, don't know if this appeared in the US? Bit less performance but a decent car that I owned for a long time. Mint R32s are rare here in the UK.

I own a blue 04 R32 and a green 94 Corrado R32 swap. You could say that I’m a fan. My R32 has full exhaust front to back. Corrado has the same but single pipe instead of dual. Sounds completely different.

Found this video as there's an R32 for sale locally that's been on the market for YEARS. (900+ days according to the listing) The price keeps getting lowered, which has me looking at videos like this, trying to find out why this car hasn't sold. After watching this, I have a MUCH better idea of what to look for, should I decide to buy it. Too bad it's a DSG and not a manual....

Yo Suku all I can say is I wish you luck. VW stopped manufacturing then like last year and the only OEM ones you can find are off crashed or high mile R32s that are being parted out. I’d say look on Facebook groups that’s probably your best bet.

Since the exhaust note is the #1 pro, what exhaust systems sound the best? The black one you played as the example was stock by looking at the tips, but was it resonated or any downpipe modification? I have talked to R32 owners that have said the stock exhaust is the best sounding if want to keep the wookie sound, do you find that to be true?
Yep the car was stock exhaust with resonator delete and flapper mod. I had forced induction on my last R32 and I had the CTS exhaust which I loved. Just really depends what you are looking for. My new R32 is stock exhaust for now.
@@ThreePedalGarage I had a feeling that the resonator was deleted, because mine is bone stock and does not sound that throaty. Keep up the R32 content it's great for us to see! I would like to see an entire segment dedicated to R32 exhausts. There are plenty of clips out there but nobody goes into any detail, and since it's the #1 pro to owning an R32 it would be a great addition.
@@oldkid6 Miltek is the most popular. I prefer the Flomaster. It's an American brand. But there's quite a few others in the market. You have to decide what works for you. I suggest you upgrade the pipes to 75mm. It will really be throaty then. I drive a 2.8L 24V. I have had the cats removed and replaced with fibre glass mufflers. I went for a more restrictive rear silencer to tone it down. It has a nice rumble without being too aggressive. Good luck deciding.

Nope we never got that color for the R32 in the US we got that color for the GTI only

Are you in Europe? The US only got the mk4 R32 in 4 colors and it wasn’t white. I think Europe got a white option. The MK5 R32 came in white in the US.
Had mine for 13 years, kept it fairly stock,(HPA SS, APR reflash) Bought it new for $29K in 2004, sold it in 2017 with 88,000 miles on it for $19K!! Loved the sound, (so did my wife) but once I got the EV bug, it just felt laborious for daily driving, but felt bad I wasn't driving it anymore. So I sold it to help pay for my Model 3. Loved the experience of the R32, and proud to say it was my last gas car.... go out with a roar!!!
Oh yes a roar for sure! The model 3 are pretty interesting cars. If I had to buy an EV I would also go with a Tesla.
If you had kept it for longer you could easily have made your money back, prices keep going up!

Andrew Wenman yea I know some stuff can still get from dealer but it’s not cheap I had order the oem wheels and the oem bbs and it was over 2k for each set.
ECU failed on my R32 for no reason. It wouldn't give out EML and EPC upon ignition and hence, crank /no start situation. Swapped the ECU , fired up straight away. Wonder if any of the owners here had the same problem.
Btw, what exhaust is the black one using. Decat ??

That’s a weird issue! Glad you got it fixed. The black are is OEM exhaust with a res delete and a flapper mod.

In the US they have 4 door options, sadly in the US we only got the 2 door option.

Always loved the R32's. I liked the interior and backend of the mark 5 a tad more, but as you're probably aware they only came in that damned DSG, and I ain't bout that life. Manual all day!

Getting the MKIV R32 to the U.S. in any shape or form was an ordeal, the fans wanted both Manual and DSG, but U.S. dealers were reluctant to bring them at all, in fact the original 5000 U.S. allotment was supposed to be sold over the span of two years, as they expected that people wouldn't want to pay $27-28K+ for a Golf.
Its also the reason a lot of the standard and optional equipment from other markets didn't make it over either; the HID lights with headlamp washers (weren't exactly up to U.S. specs, didn't stop people from getting them aftermarket), the 5 door option , the various interior colors and trim (in other markets they had colors other than black as well as different surfaces including alcantara suede), were left out of the U.S. market.
All 5000 were sold in a little over a year.
Next time around with the MKV the fans again wanted an equal split of DSG and manual transmission R32s. The N.A. MKV came with DSG while the MK2 TT 3.2 came with the manual.
The next Golf R (MKVI) was manual only in the U.S.
It wasn't until the MKVII that they offered both manual and DSG in the U.S., and also made the Golf R more readily available in the U.S. versus only one year during the generation.
The MKVIII will also be available with the choice of DSG or manual, where as some markets will only get DSG.
Not quite dead yet in the U.S., but fewer cars are available will manual these days.

Con: Outdated infotainment system. It's a silly gripe. I've got an '01 Alpine head with AI-net and can play my phone through the stereo just fine. You don't always need the latest gizmos that will just break in ten years.

I guess everyone has their own viewpoint. I know people who would gladly pay $25k for a lower milage R32. I personally bought my first R32 for $20k and it was nice having a low milage R32 but it’s nowhere near the same as having a higher milage R32 you can drive and enjoy. That’s my viewpoint behind it.

I’m the US we only got the DSG transmission. In the rest of the world you got the option of manual or DSG. One of the big reasons why the MK5 R32 in the US aren’t as desirable. But they are still really good cars

You can get parts from VW or dismantlers in the US pretty easy

@@spd7881 yes you can for sure but people sell fake parts so you may not be getting an OEM part when doing it that way. We also have companies such as ECSTUNING and FCP Euro that provide all the parts you really need for the R32 still.

I can say this, I own a MK5 R32 in manual so they did make them!! You just might not of got them in the USA
Yes they are made in Europe not in the US. We only got the DSG MK5 R32. The MK5 has not held there value as well as the MK4 and here they aren’t as desirable.

@@ThreePedalGarage learn something new everyday and here I've owned it for 13 years. Just an fyi...mine at 25k miles, not daily/inclement weather driven.... I too am experiencing the pixel issue on that center gauge display. In my case seems to only be an issue as temps warm up because with cooler winter temps it doesn't fade. Good video...it hit some good key points!
