@@maveric0738 It was the U.S./North American version of the MKIV R32 that had the same motor as the MK1 TT 3.2. In other markets (Europe, UK) the MKIV R32 made 240hp. VWoA wasn't sure the R32 was going to sell over here what with it being $27-29,000, and the original 5000 allotment was to be spread over two years. For this reason they wanted to spend as little money as possible, so instead of certifying 2 versions of the 3.2L VR6 for the U.S. market, they just did the one in the Audi TT, as it wasn't a limited run of units and the higher price ($40,000+) and longer availability (04-06 in the U.S.) of the TT 3.2s absorbed that cost easier. To appease the TT customer, it was available only with DSG and advertised with 250hp while the R32 stuck with the 6 speed manual and claimed 240hp.
Awesome review! I agree I MKIV is just that much better looking, whilst the MKV is not but drives better, which is why I ended up getting an Audi A3 3.2 for my DD.
That's very kind of you, thank you. Hopefully the content will bring the subscribers. Editing is definitely a skill I am getting better with over time - made sure this one wasn't rushed so glad you noticed, thanks again!
volkswizard what editing software do you use? Looks great. I'm thinking about having a go at car vlogging/reviews although I'm not sure anyone will want to see a video on my 7 year old Corsa! Ha
I use Adobe Premiere Elements which cost around £50 and was a massive improvement from Windows Movie Maker! Professionals use Premiere Pro but Elements does all I need for the moment. Start with your Corsa and see how you get on, I am sure there are loads of people who'd love to have a 7 year old Corsa if they've just started driving, everything has an audience so get filming! GoPro Hero 4 is really good too, I tried Sony before as cheaper and Shmee seems to like them but GoPro is like an Iphone, top quality and easy to use.
That's a fair point so thanks for pointing it out, I will make a special effort to make the level consistent, I am not sure why the start of the R32 one is so loud, so apologies about that.
Great video. I'm looking to get back into a mk5 DSG R32. I owned one a few years ago and loved it. They do get under your skin. And there is no other car like it in the hatchback market. Plus I want a v6 in a hatchback before we are all forced into 1.6 and 2.0 turbos lol. The video was very helpful for new buyers and old owners alike. Thanks
Thanks Matt, yes worth buying a good one now before they are all gone. Just beware of wing rust and jerky gearboxes if DSG. Otherwise they are tough cars and a sound investment :)
volkswizard yes my old one had the dreaded rusty wings. Didn't cost too much to sort out though and the dsg mechatronic can be repaired now for under £1k usually. As you said in the video those small faults would cost far less than the depreciation on a new Golf R. Plus the new Golf R sounds like a vacuum cleaner by comparison lol
Love my MK5 R32. Owned it since 2015. Currently sitting at 93000 Miles. Putting in 3-5K on cosmetic repairs, mostly paint stuff from rust, headliner, and the trim around the gear, and getting new Timing Chains put in at 100,000 Miles.
volkswizard hi sir. I had the 4 gti for a long time. Bloody good car. Not the faster or the sharpest. Covered over 550kms on the original engine then sold it. Now still with my mk5 already 177k miles on it UK car in manual. Dsg no fun
volkswizard Thank you sir. Most of it town driving. Followed your articles since mk2 days. I still have my mk2 gti uk car G reg. Getting another L reg 1991 16v four door. Very few here
I Love my MK4 R32 with DSG.....I've fitted it with complet Miltek decat exhaust system (sounds wonderful), and intake system, and Revo stage 2 mapping. It now makes 265 Hk / 340 NM. They are both wonderful cars, but the MK4 is the one i always dreamed off, and i will always prefer the MK4 ! I would never trade my MK4 for the MK5 ;)
What a lovely engine. Previous owner of a 2.8 v6 4 motion. Only car I’ve sold for more than I bought it for. Any golf with a v6 will follow the Corrado
One of the best videos watched about R32s...! Massive thumbs up from Greece! I personally love the MK4..its my dream car and the one i am working to buy.
MK4 is a future classic. I don't think the value will ever die down and the design is timeless. MK5 has better build quality and ride quality, and will beat the MK4 around a track.
The Mk5 was also noticeably faster, you look at the speedo and it's a good 10mph faster than the Mk4 on same road because it's so much happier riding the bumps.
The mk5 golf r32 is faster than its mk4 equivelent for my money, both in reality and in testing (like the top gear test track for example shows both times from both marques) due to dsg and other handling factors besides. But you dont buy a Golf R32 for a fast car, its not the fastest of its type out there by far. That heavy engine up front on the mk4 and mk5, the heavy wheels, heavy brakes = understeer with aggressive driving styles and is hard to scrub off that speed without brake fade (as i found out on a trackday). You buy it for a refined quick-enough convenient car that sounds something special under load. A drop the kids off mobile that then turns into dad or mums plaything :) You mentioned the Ferrrari/Golf r32 sound comparision Volkswizard hehe :) just if your curious check my channel as there is a vid i uploaded of me in my R32 behind a 458 Italia in convoy, id say he had the full orchestra, i had the 4 band quartet lol, but still we did make a glorious sound together when it bounced off walls.
MK5 R32 for me : more modern, more comfortable, better interior, faster (especially with the brilliant DSG), better sound (stock), better balanced... the last VR6 Golf, ever.
Sorry but the MK5 R32 here in the United States was not any faster than the MK4 R32. In fact the MK4 had exactly/ identical engine than that of its brother MK1 Audi TT 3.2. U.S. spec R32's MAF is larger diameter ( 3" ID versus 2.75") and Airbox is different.
I can’t believe people are saying the interior of a mark 4 is better? Mine used to rattle and shake around. I had a mark 4 from new with these issues, I’ve had 3 and I’ve had 4 mark 5’s with no issues like this. I love the mark 4 but the shell is no way as stiff and strong as a mark 5. I love both cars as I’m a vr6 enthusiast 👍
Glad you enjoyed it! Younger viewer may not remember how desirable the Mk3 VR6 was back in the day, it had all the buzz of the Mk7 R but it wasn't available on cheap deals so you had to work to achieve your dream of owning one. Probably the most dangerous car I've ever owned as the engine was amazing but the standard suspension was somewhat unstable as it wasn't really a sporty car, Corrado was much better set up but both great.
I certainly hope that it is better then the mk4. What would be its purpose otherwise... I do however favor the mk4´s in/exterior. And since the engine is basically the same, it really comes down to the looks.
regarding the jerkiness of the throttle. You can alter that since it has an electronic throttle body actuator. So it shouldn't be a problem to remap the throttle.
Durable cars were made from VW between 1998-2004 year. Golf V is victim of downsizing where economical and ecological aspects made it's scars. MKIV is a solid car with dashboard from soft leather imitation , this is better than hard platic used in GolfV. For me is Golf IV car where investing pais off.
Brilliant review and I absolutely love these cars. Personally for me aesthetically the Mk4 is the better looking car, rounded, smoother curves and more aggressive looking. I think the tail pipes on each corner sets it apart from the mk5, again down to aesthetics. But like the review the auto/dsg box on the mk4 isn’t as smooth. The Mk5 has better handling, smoother gearbox and has some better equipment. Either way, both awesome cars!
The mark 5 R32 for me is the best overall, better looking too. Modern classic summed it up in this sentence ‘the mark 5 may not have the Kudos of the mark 4 yet, but it will always be the last and the best performing of the 6 pot golfs’ which I totally agree with having owned both. I’ve currently got a mark 5 r32 with 9k on the clock which I’m going to keep hold of. The mark 5 looks better and drives better. A great review as always 👍
Thanks for commenting stevesje71, glad you enjoyed it. I'm pleased to report sound quality improves in my later films thanks to a £15 microphone but hopefully this doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment to be had from watching 👍
Having owned both, there’s no comparison between the more raw Mk4 vs the slightly softer and apologetic mk5. Mk5 has a ‘better’ interior technically speaking, but not necessarily a more special place to be sitting. Might just be the general tough rawness that oozes through the mk4 that dominates and leave the mk5 feeling too soft even though it’s technically better in almost every regard. Lil too mature
Easy, upgrade the suspension in the MK5 like I did. Awesome drive, very spirited, sporty and full of character, with that lovely interior and I think nicer body style. Plus that awesome sound. Top it off, I have back doors!
Thanks for the video! I'm considering a mk5 r32 vs Passat cc 3.6. Different cars I know, but the CC is so much car for the money!! I've really enjoyed my current VW 4motion 2.8 VR6 golf
Thanks for watching the video! I'd forgotten about Passat CC 3.6 (Passat R36 is more well known but still under most peoples' radar), CC sounds great go for it!
volkswizard Do you have any thoughts regarding the CC, as compared to the r32? I'm a little apprehensive about the CC, but it is a lot of car (especially being more modern). Very interesting you suggested the MK5 r32 was comparable to a MK7 Golf - that they'd barely improved upon it in the 10 years of development since.
CC is a good car, a lot more low profile than an R32 so for many it wont be an alternative as it's not an R32 even though engine is similar. Depends on your perspective, as I am getting older one day soon I will look silly even in a Mk5 R32 so a more mature car with similar character will be welcome. Bare in mind Passat/CC is just a lengthened Mk5/6 Golf so not a significantly different car, electric parking brake will be the most obvious difference.
Never drove a Mk5 however I prefer the understated look of the Mk4 in comparison to the Mk5, bit too many shiney bits for me. I only gave mine up because of the rising insurance and Road Fund Licence. Definitely a car to measured in smiles per gallon and not miles.
Really good review thank you (and answers just the question I've been pondering). Just bought a Mk5 R32, you've touched on most of the things I love about it in your video... it's relaxed and practical, and a lot of fun to drive. The Mk4 looks superb, just not as balanced a vehicle. I like that you mention your age... I'm 39 and really enjoying the Mk5, but can see myself being a staunch Mk4 enthusiast 10 years ago.
Nice comparison Andrew - thanks for making the video. Always liked both R32's and learnt a lot of the smaller details from this video. Only thing putting me off on the MK5 is the high running costs. Petrol isn't cheap and road tax is in the highest band > £520! (and no doubt it will keep going up every few years). I think this is the last chance to enjoy and run these NA higher output engines though before everything gets taxed to death by the government! Wish they still made a 6 cylinder Golf - the one thing that the BMW 1 series still has going for it.
Some early cars are still £305 road tax (pre March 2006) but I agree £500+ is silly but they aren't losing money at the moment so in the bigger picture they aren't expensive to own as depreciation is one of the bigger costs of motoring
Can't agree more on the road tax, it's not so bad on the mk4 but it's a bit over the top for mk5. Also, don't be put off by fuel cost it's not actually that bad you'll be surprised if you drive on motorways, that said, it does go down quickly if you drive around town revving the arse off it, but it's all how you drive it.
Brilliant video I own a mk4 golf r32 its a joy to drive but I'm looking at getting a mk5 golf r32 so this video is just what I'm looking for. Glad I found your channel, keep up the good work.
I’ve been lucky to drive a few Golf Mk5 R32’s and own a R32 Mk4, As a daily driver the Mk5 is better too drive as less harsh but the Mk4 is awesome for a country road blat! And the Konig seats 😎
I just got a mk4 2.0 I know 2.slow what ever but it completely stripped almost at 2500lbs and stage 2 tune and going to get a cam for it so going to push 160hp in the 2.0 and I tell you then engine has torque spins the tires in 2nd gear for a n/a 2.0 pushing 160 pulls hard.
Agreed but just think it doesn't actually go down in value, a newish performance car is cheap on tax but will lose £1000s per year (and unlikely to sound so good!)
I think the Mk4 was pretty bold for Volkswagen with the bodykit, Konig seats and all those little details…it was dare I say quite outlandish for a VW. I think the Mk5 is definitely more of a drivers car and sounds better but the Mk4 has more presence…it’s a tough call…both good cars which probably are classed as a bit more eventful to drive than a modern car 🚗
This is your best video by far! Guess I’m biased as I own both but great to see a comparison. My view is the mark 4 and mark 5 R32 drive very different and feel very different. The mark 4 I could compare to the Clubsport S in some respects
Nice job mate, Very well done all round 👍🏾 even my 1.6 mk5 was proud. Only thing I didn't like is the new gearbox it's gotta be fully manual for me personally. I would still drive it no problem..
6:25 you can get heated seats without leather. the mrk4 is better because it was available with a manual transmission. the biggest problem with both these cars is the weight of the engine.
I did comment recently on your GTI video and loved it a lot. This video is a step up. Again loved the review. GTI or R32? Reliability is my main concern for both. What's your take on this?
Thanks Graham! Hmm R32 is simple with no turbo but timing chain replacement is an issue now. With GTI £350 cambelt change and you are good as new. If you can get an R32 with a new timing chain than not much else to worry about even as it ages which on GTI, all those hoses, sensors, etc are getting old now. Having said that never heard of a Mk5 GTI needing a turbo - let's call it a draw!
I have driven the newer iterations of the R series and my fourteen year old 04 R32 stills has a better tactile feel to it. I enjoy the stiffer ride and it communicates the road back to me much better then the newer R's Looks ? I love the two door R. A four door R32 is just not a sport car in many ways and the newer R's are heavier too. I guess you know where I stand
Mk4 is more fun their much better with a few mods👌as it looks standard in video and mk4s worth a lot more money than mk5s as not many left on the road👍cool vid tho😎
its interesting to realize that for the US market the Mk5 R32 put off alot of potential buyers because of the dsg only option. 9 years later down the road I believe the opinions are changing and people are beginning to appreciate the ingenuity of it. If youve driven manual all your life like me and you hop in the vw dsg you really appreciate the gearbox very fast up/down shifts that you can feel and still with an option to shift gears manually. Best of both worlds IMO, there's nothing cool about a manual trans in traffic. The Mk4 R32 has definitely held its value well and prices are even going higher now days, do you think that we will see the same situation with the Mk5 say in 10 years?
In the VW forums, people always wanted the choice in the U.S. When the MKIV R32 showed up here, DSG was the big innovation and we didn't get the choose it. Again with the MKV and MKVI, VWoA made the choice for us; DSG for the 5 and manual for the 6, the opposite transmission would always show up in the sister Audi TT car in the U.S.; MK1 3.2 had DSG, MK2 3.2 had both, and the MK2 TTS was DSG only here. The MKVII R finally got it right by bringing both transmissions over. The MK3 TTS is only offered with DSG in the U.S.
Awesome video, I have both and 100% agree with the every little part of this
The old one is a bit more classy looking.
definitely has more of a motorsport look as well.

I can't understand how you don't have more subscribers. Your content is top notch and the editing gets better each new video. Keep it going fella
Maybe because the sound is much too loud
Plus the new Golf R sounds like a vacuum cleaner by comparison lol
opel astra h opc no worse :)
Miss my MK5 - I had it on a private plate ‘V6 VAG’. Was one of the best cars I own. I now have a 911 yet I still miss the R32 🥺
Ha 3 years later and I'm back. I now own another R32 😊🎉 good to be back.
Mk4 is aa classic
I can not argue with that sir!
volkswizard hi sir. I had the 4 gti for a long time. Bloody good car. Not the faster or the sharpest. Covered over 550kms on the original engine then sold it. Now still with my mk5 already 177k miles on it UK car in manual. Dsg no fun
volkswizard love your Clubsport S
Thank you for your feedback and positive comments, you certainly do some driving!
volkswizard Thank you sir.
Bushlover1974 mk4 dsg??
25hp increase from stage 2 ? lmao stop lying you dumb fck =]]
@@JovanKorica1 North America only got the 6 speed manual, other markets had the choice of manual or DSG.
@@WolfyyRulezz why
Mk4 For Sure
Well presented! MK4 for looks and Mk5 for performance!
Thanks Glen - I'd say that's a fair summary!
MK4 Hands down a real sports car is 2 doors and 6 speed the last great VW.......please vw bring back the 6 speed VR6
We have 3door 6 speed mk 5 R32's in Australia, dont you?
NS Sherlock some people say 2 doors and some say 3 doors. the ones who say 3 doors they caunt also trunk lid
They did 3 door mk5 R32s
The Golf 4 is a 3 door hatchback, also the MkV R32 was available with 3 doors and manual transmission, at least in Europe
Yia sas Konstantinos, eime poli eharistimeno pou s'aresi to film mou. Kali epitixia me to ayorasma to Mk4 R32 sou, einai oniro autokinito!
MK4 is a future classic. I don't think the value will ever die down and the design is timeless.
MK5 has better build quality and ride quality, and will beat the MK4 around a track.
mk5 is much worse build quality especially inside plastic and buttons
@@pauliusbertonis4108, also the Mk4, first years of the 21st century were a terrible era for VAGs interiors.
Great video Andrew. Thanks for putting it together. Mk5 feels like it has the edge overall but do love the look of the Mk4!
A drop the kids off mobile that then turns into dad or mums plaything :)
You mentioned the Ferrrari/Golf r32 sound comparision Volkswizard hehe :) just if your curious check my channel as there is a vid i uploaded of me in my R32 behind a 458 Italia in convoy, id say he had the full orchestra, i had the 4 band quartet lol, but still we did make a glorious sound together when it bounced off walls.
The mk5 may be faster, but the mk4 is far cooler
Mk4 with flapper mod open (it takes 20 second to make it) and the sound is just perfect
One of your classic reviews, I’ve both cars and watched it again recently. A great comparison
I like the mk4 for looks and body shape but like the mk5 for comfiness and handling. They are both equal all depends on what you prefer
How is this even a question... MK4 R is the clear winner
Nope is mk5
@@martenorio747no mk4 IS the best
My mk5 r32 is now biturbo with dsg. Wouldn't change it for any VAG car on offer. It's the ultimate street car.
MK5 R32 for me : more modern, more comfortable, better interior, faster (especially with the brilliant DSG), better sound (stock), better balanced... the last VR6 Golf, ever.
JackNapier19 interior is better in a mk4 by miles! Not the last either a 3l turbo vr6 is in progress
Agreed my mk4 interior is quite a bit better imho
Sorry but the MK5 R32 here in the United States was not any faster than the MK4 R32. In fact the MK4 had exactly/ identical engine than that of its brother MK1 Audi TT 3.2.
U.S. spec R32's MAF is larger diameter ( 3" ID versus 2.75") and Airbox is different.
mk4 is 100 kg lighter.. that helps
Fabulous Andrew!!! Brings back memories of my Mk 5 R32 and also my Mk 3 VR6 which was my first "fast" car
MK5 R32 all day :)
I like the MK4, but MK5 is just insane.
I certainly hope that it is better then the mk4. What would be its purpose otherwise... I do however favor the mk4´s in/exterior. And since the engine is basically the same, it really comes down to the looks.
A good review, Did like the mk4 but brought the mk5 because it is a daily driver.
regarding the jerkiness of the throttle. You can alter that since it has an electronic throttle body actuator. So it shouldn't be a problem to remap the throttle.
MK 4 is the last real golf
the real last shit golf lol, i had a mk4 and it was fkin terrible. handles shit, was slow and very uncomfy
MK5 GTI and now the MK7 GTI
Great video and great content, I don't think this video though does full justice to just how great these cars sound when driven.
I want to buy an R32 now!
You can pop off the air ducks you just have to take off the bumpe, people always say they don’t do anything, but infact they have covers!
Hi W, thanks for taking the time to comment and feedback. Yes, both are the right choice!
Trying to find a Mk4 with a dsg gearbox is like rocking horse shi..... 😂
Mk4
MK5 R32 is timelees beautiful design !
True, it's matured well and that noise well never go out of fashion :)
Only ever owned a mk3 gti but im longing a mk4 R for the looks, mk5 for the drive
I love both, I just got a MKV R32 a few months ago and before I had a Jetta GLI 24v VR6.
Only thing I miss is the 6speed manaul transmission.
I have currently a Jetta GLI 24v VR6 and I'm looking to buy a MKV R32 like you!
Should I? Do you prefer your R32 MK5?
I have mine and mo4 337 and love my mk4s huge power and Easy to work on and no plastic engine parts like mk5
Currently in a 24v Jetta/bora gli but I am thinking of upgrading to a mk4 r32 in a year hopefully
Hey your videos have really come on since this one. Great content
Thanks for the review, very clear and enjoyable video for both MK4 & MK5
I'd personally just go for a MK6 R20 instead of any of these. Easily tuneable and sounds still really good. + all the modern luxurys.
Great car but preferred the Audi badged A3 3.2 but always check the blocks for the dreaded chain stretch.
Looks: MKIV
Exhaust note: MKIV
Transmission: MKIV
Interior: MKIV
pfff MkV for exhaust, trans and interior and I might agree with you. Have you even been in a MkV R?
Ditto apparently you were never an owner of the MK4 R32! If you were you’d truly understand
whatever makes you happy. MKV
no no no anyone who has ever owned a mkiv knows it has one of the worst interiors of all time. hell mk3 interior leather was better
Really? The interior of the IV is abysmal.
Cracking review, and close to home! Maybe you can help make my mind up on purchasing my first R32!
Hi Andy, thanks for commenting! Either R32 is a great choice but hope video will help you decide which one suits your needs best.
I love that mk4
Brilliant video I own a mk4 golf r32 its a joy to drive but I'm looking at getting a mk5 golf r32 so this video is just what I'm looking for. Glad I found your channel, keep up the good work.
Thanks Jay, glad you enjoyed it, Mk4 or Mk5 R32, both are very special in their own ways.
Mk4 is better for sure
Since the Introduction of DSG Gearbox... any VW without DSG (Older Cars) are missing the WOW factor.
AB. Digital Agreed, the whole car drives differently.
This Channel is so underated...
I’ve been lucky to drive a few Golf Mk5 R32’s and own a R32 Mk4, As a daily driver the Mk5 is better too drive as less harsh but the Mk4 is awesome for a country road blat! And the Konig seats 😎
The MKIV .:R is the best .:R EVER (because it’s got a true manual transmission).
Like the Mk5 🤷🏻♂️
I just got a mk4 2.0 I know 2.slow what ever but it completely stripped almost at 2500lbs and stage 2 tune and going to get a cam for it so going to push 160hp in the 2.0 and I tell you then engine has torque spins the tires in 2nd gear for a n/a 2.0 pushing 160 pulls hard.
Sounds great Coyote :)
DSG is a big no, but both are very cool. Looking at a MK4 today to buy possibly.
I've always wanted the mk5 but jesus the tax is just a pain
Agreed but just think it doesn't actually go down in value, a newish performance car is cheap on tax but will lose £1000s per year (and unlikely to sound so good!)
Old video but looking at the mk5 .. Great info and subscribed
Great product knowledge on all the specs, impressive
Thanks!
I second that..
My dream car is black mk4 with sunroof and v6 engine
Paulius Bertonis Paul, you don't want a BMP R32...
Mk 4 golf is the best looking golf to date, really stylish hatch
the mk4 looked so cool to me when it came out! but the mk5 looks great!
This is your best video by far! Guess I’m biased as I own both but great to see a comparison. My view is the mark 4 and mark 5 R32 drive very different and feel very different. The mark 4 I could compare to the Clubsport S in some respects
Great video, well produced and informative.
Great Vid ive just borrowed a MK4 R32 to film and loved it!!!
Langers VW Just got myself 1 😍
Nice job mate, Very well done all round 👍🏾 even my 1.6 mk5 was proud. Only thing I didn't like is the new gearbox it's gotta be fully manual for me personally. I would still drive it no problem..
Thanks 👍
Golf r32 the only way I can describe that lovely 6 cylinders noise is " the angry elephant "
Watching this makes me really want another MK5.
An amazing video Andrew thank you so much for the rich information you given out.
Thank you abdulla, glad you enjoyed it and found it useful :)
Thanks Andy. Your views are very much appreciated and valued.
I have driven the newer iterations of the R series and my fourteen year old 04 R32 stills has a better tactile feel to it. I enjoy the stiffer ride and it communicates the road back to me much better then the newer R's
Looks ? I love the two door R. A four door R32 is just not a sport car in many ways and the newer R's are heavier too.
I guess you know where I stand
It still boggles the mind why they ever made a 4 door R. Totally runs the sporty look.
Gary Mathe yes but some people need the practicality of 5 doors
