  • In this video, I review a Volkswagen Golf R32 MK4 against my Volkswagen Golf R32 MK5 and we'll be looking at the differences between these two generations. Both share the same engine but apart from that and the paintjob, are there any real differences?

Historical Notes of interest on the Mk4 R32:
It was greenlighted during the reign of Ferdinand Piech at VW, grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, and the engineer responsible for developement of the mid-engined racecars of Porsche in the '60's including the 917, the Audi Quattro and the iconoclast VW's, Phaeton and Touareg.
The M4 R32 was built in Bratislava Slovakia along side the Touareg after the Berlin Wall came down and VW wanted to take advantage of newly freed talent that had previously been walled off behind the Iron Curtain. They were highly motivated to build a quality vehicle.
It was a parts bin special with the 3.2 from the base Phaeton and that 5000lb+ vehicle's big brakes.
It had the steering rack, the Haldex system and the independent rear suspension system from the Audi TT (both built on the same platform).
And that's what makes it special, and a blast to drive.

Brilliant video love the mk4 mk5 comparison
The R32 is just a unique car
I love my manual but the DSG is superb and back then everyone wanted auto because of the quality of the box. I went DSG on my 15 plate Gti and loved its seem less change.
In the mk5 r32 they did the old man spec
    Quite rare.
Full cream leather with wood effect steering wheel, gear knob, radio surround & trim inserts :)
In my opinion the R32s are the best hot hatch made for the drama & sound and you can pop to the shops and pick the kids up.

    MK4 R32 is 👑
Here in the USA we got the MK4 in Manual only and MK5 was DSG only. VW really made a major mistake with not at least making both options available as MK5 sales took a major hit and they would sit on dealership lots for months collecting dust because its was DSG only, we wanted manual. MK4 was sold out before they even completed production in terms of pre-sale.
MK4 R32 is the one EVERYBODY wants ultimately. I had a cop pull me over one day and literally told me "I'm not going to give you a ticket tonight, you drive an R32. I have a thing for Volkswagens"
It doesn't pack the biggest punch but of all the R32/Golf R cars the MK4 is truly the untamed beast, each generation gets more refined than the previous. Yes, smiles and giggles the entire drive these cars are just a hoot to drive.
BEWARE THEY ARE NOT CHEAP TO OWN BUT THEY ARE TOTALLY WORTH IT😉
For me oddly I love all the even # Generations ie... MK4, MK6, MK8

Definitely one of the best auto gearboxes out there but there's nothing like a manual!

@@CarNittyI agree, that the visceral feel of a manual cannot be replaced and it definitely has its place amongst a certain type of drivers. The pdk is quicker and more precise than even the best driver will ever be on his/her best day and if you live in a place like NY, Chicago or here Southern Cali and consistently stuck in traffic an automatic becomes more ideal for a daily and the pdk then shines and the manual moves to a Sunday driver. Love the content brother keep doing what you are doing.
