Great video... After watching this, I think that big 3.2 with that lovely sound suits the MK4 better! Alex has kept that old car in really good condition 💪🏼
Just bought a MK5 R32 #3890 of 5000 here in the states. I looked for an MK4 but there selling for 18-30k for mint condition. I’m in love with this car already. My mechanic just tuned the DSG so I can’t wait to see the difference. Also throwing in high flow cats and a borla exhaust 🤙🏻🤙🏻
@@CarNitty The mk4 had two versions of the 2.8 The US market only 2.8 12v (basically same as mk3) and the 2.8 24v with 204hp wich is a lot more similar to the 3.2 The mk3 also came with a 2.9 in the synchro variant
Historical Notes of interest on the Mk4 R32: It was greenlighted during the reign of Ferdinand Piech at VW, grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, and the engineer responsible for developement of the mid-engined racecars of Porsche in the '60's including the 917, the Audi Quattro and the iconoclast VW's, Phaeton and Touareg. The M4 R32 was built in Bratislava Slovakia along side the Touareg after the Berlin Wall came down and VW wanted to take advantage of newly freed talent that had previously been walled off behind the Iron Curtain. They were highly motivated to build a quality vehicle. It was a parts bin special with the 3.2 from the base Phaeton and that 5000lb+ vehicle's big brakes. It had the steering rack, the Haldex system and the independent rear suspension system from the Audi TT (both built on the same platform). And that's what makes it special, and a blast to drive.
I had a Mk4 in 2016, one of the best cars I've ever had. It put a smile on my face every time I got in it! sold it for a profit 2 years later! If I ever bought a Mk5, I'd always be sad that it's not a Mk4
Ive owned both. MK4 is a very unique car. Though i prefer daily driving my current MK5. Its much more modern and friendlier for daily use. Its very noticeable when comparing them. If we're talking dream car garage, MK4 all day long!
Great comparison vid, and opinions. I own a mk4 r32 in dbp. So I am biased I prefer the MK4 over the 5 but both cool Not a fan of the pops n bangs though 😊
Making all the right sounds 🎶 MK4 is still my preferred choice here the boxy analogue experience is what its about The flared arches on the 4 is also another thing that does it for me. Having said that the DSG is still better lol but if given the choice manual is the way for me 😎
Brilliant video love the mk4 mk5 comparison The R32 is just a unique car I love my manual but the DSG is superb and back then everyone wanted auto because of the quality of the box. I went DSG on my 15 plate Gti and loved its seem less change. In the mk5 r32 they did the old man spec Quite rare. Full cream leather with wood effect steering wheel, gear knob, radio surround & trim inserts :) In my opinion the R32s are the best hot hatch made for the drama & sound and you can pop to the shops and pick the kids up. These cars will go up in value and are very sort after for any petrol head Great episode thank you
What a great comparison vid. I got mk5 cos its cheaper and needed auto, but mk4 would have been better for raw factor. I hate the dsg flappy switches, they are useless on any road that isnt straight. I just use the ' tiptronic' system.
@@CarNitty Yes, and although strange at first, after a week or two it becomes second nature. But, the truth is, who needs it when the DSG in Sport mode does the job well enough 🤣
Got to say from outside the DSG gearbox really doesn't sound like it shifts any better than a regular torque converter auto, sounds a bit disappointing tbh.
The DSG has a slur-like noise as the revs drop and the next gear engages. Personally the DSG sounds better and the manual sounds like the cars taking a big gulp of air
I prefer the look of the mk4 but like the fact the mk5 will be newer, I'm looking to be buying a mk4 or 5 and the end of the year. How did ut get the pops on the mk5 as I love when cars do that
Not necessarily. Pops and bangs are also bad for the catalytic converter but mine wasn't removed as the overrun isn't aggressive. It comes down to driving style and how often you push the car as the crackles will put more wear on the car but you need to be mindful of this when abusing the car
Is it true that VW went from a hydraulic steering assist in MK4 to an electronic in MK5? Did you feel the difference? I know that Mk4 R32 steering rack is faster than the rest of the MK4s, but I never drove MK5s to compare.

Love the comparison! It’s taken me this long to finally sit down and enjoy this great comparison! I’ve always loved the Mk4 R32, it’s what got me into fast Golfs. For me, to make it perfect. Would be a DSG version, which they only made for Europe. 😅 I would daily it, maybe even start a turbo or supercharge build to make it comparable to the modern day versions 😊 Thanks for the shoutout! And keep up the good work on the channel!
Taking the MK4 all day over the MK5. Never really liked how the mk5 looked. Especially the interior. But Unfortunately, getting a mk4 here in the states is near impossible unless you want to pay a pretty penny for it. MK5s are still reasonably priced though
Ive owned my MK4 R32 SINCE 2015 absolutely love it.. its a 3DR DPB with alloys in gloss black. Looks special and lots of guys have praised it gets looks everywhere. I just have never understood the love for the MK4... they looked dated even when they first appeared, lingered longer than in other version, and have almost no rigidity compared to the MK5... and, yes, I own a MK5. Happy motoring!
