Coming from turbo hot hatches , I got a R32 for a laugh, I think the misconception is people think it’s a hot hatch, but to me it feels more of a GT hatch back , comfortable doing long journeys quickly
I've just bought a 2006 R32 down here in NZ. I love it! Fast enough for me, and that sound is magnificent (and quite addictive). As an aside, we don't get 2-doors down here, so they always look a bit 'odd' to me! Cheers, Dave
My wife has a couple of Golf's, she daily's a Mk5 GTI (country syncro mk2 for the bad weather) and I absolutely love it. Unfortunately where we live anything over a 2.0litre is expensive to tax so its out of our running costs. In '98 I test drove a Mk3 VR6 and outpaced my mates dad in his 740i. You can have plenty of fun below 2.0 litres but you just dont get the smoothness, sound torque delivery.
What you said at 14:20 is so true. I have a Golf R mk7.5 DSG, and its such a Jekyll and Hyde car. Can drive it subtle as much as you want, but it's like an angry tiger in race mode over 4000rpm but that's where the fun lives.
That's a really nice example of the R32 No V you have there. Brings back many happy memories of my 2009 Mk V , which was red & had five doors. I also had it supercharged by ABT, & that really did improve the performance & was still great to drive! Keep up the good work & good luck with the TVR!
Great car Dean, VW don't build Golf's like this anymore look at the cheapness in the MK8. This R32 is the last of the golden era of VW. Thank you for sharing 👌🤗
We sold the wife's r32 after 12 years of ownership. It needed front wings and a respray but we still got decent money for it. Great car. Never let us down. We now run an up for tottling about in and I've still got my r36 passat for when I need to do a longer run. These havent become as valuable as the golfs. I hope they do pick up, although I'm not planning to sell. I got it because I liked thr r32 so much and its been brilliant. Totally reliable. Reasonable handling. Fairly quick. Quick enough for me anyway, wouldn't keep up with a new golf r. I think it'll need new wings in a couple of years as well. This time I might do it and keep it tho. We shall see.

I had a MK5 R32 as a stop gap car before I got an M240i and I've missed it ever since. No, it's not as fast as modern turbo charger hothatches, but that's not what the R32 is about. It oozes character from the 3.2 VR6 and puts a massive smile on your face every time you turn the key. That car could do with the resonator being chopped though to really make the VR6 sing.
I’m with Phil. Had one in DSG guise and they’re not fast cars. 0-60 is flattered by the AWD traction. Contemporary GTI was quicker. All bark and no bite…but what a bark. Loved mine.
They aren’t fast cars but to say they are slow and make your other statement isn’t true. The r32 was the fastest mk4 and mk5 golf you could buy at the time
@@stevesje71 as I said, possibly off the line, but once rolling the mk5 GTI was as quick if not quicker. I had a mate with an ED30 and it had the legs over my R32. 20bhp down on paper but considerably lighter without the haldex system.
I’ll take it none the less, I did actually think about it when I was editing as I was like oh no wheel spin usually means haldex is gone, but then the rear squats and it kicked in so all good 😂
At the time, this car sat proudly above your average Focus ST and Astra VXR driver. Once tuning became a thing, it was sadly cast into the shadows and known for its slowness. All the badge snobs who'd invested 5k more to have it were feeling a little silly as they were being obliterated by tuned Focus and Astras. That said, that example looks and sounds glorious. I'm glad it was an easy fix.
Really nice car , and I wish you can keep the car and but some more videos of it later on this channel but too bad you had to sell it , I think this car is one of the best cars of all time , I wish you best of luck.

Great stuff on videos and repairs , been repairing a few similar vehicles that were involved in flood damage here in OZ , hey when checking the under carriage I think it did show the passenger leer engine mount looked split ? ,
I so wish I had the money.. if I get my payout in the next couple of weeks then definitely have this of you. What a car..❤❤❤ r32's❤❤ great video as always
More interested in the diag machine mate, i paid £1000 for an Autel and it couldn't even do a forced regen on a high soot content VW and readaptation of the injectors after I recoded them as it was a bit lumpy, just looking for a decent all rounder machine for approx £1000 for most car models
Wouldn't a careful dab of brake cleaner on a rag be better for cleaning off that yellow ID paint off the windscreen compared to scratching it off with a blade? 2:12
Who cares about the fuel economy (unless it’s your daily, but still). I own one of these and a B7 RS4. Get 25mpg out of the Golf and 17mpg from the RS4 but both cars are leagues above any of the new boring 4 pot turbo vag cars. They sound better, look better and have leagues of character. The involvement and engagement driving manuals that love to be revved to the redline is something that the modern hatches just can’t compete with. S3 isn’t even in the same league as an R32 for enjoyment, even if the R32 is slower, but each to their own I guess.
I’ve looked and there’s currently no better MK5 R32 advertised on autotrader, even the ones at 17.5k 👀
Thanks for demo of the TopDon.
I'll look into that
Golfs look too easy to break into the bonnet though 🤔
It’s amazing how expensive these are. There must be an element of VAG scene tax keeping the values high.
