Pretty much all the late SNES JRPGs didn't get translated for the reasons mentioned here. Came out too late on the SNES's life cycle when the N64 was either already out or about to come out in Japan, at a time when localization took several months and printing cartridges took several more leading to a 9-12 month lead time to get to market on a port, which, when a company projected forward to see if they'd get a decent ROI quickly realized they wouldn't due to the competition from the next-gen console. The result is a BUNCH of the best JRPGs on the system never made it over: Tactics Ogre, Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia (thouge ToP and TO at least got PSX ports) and also this game.
It's even tougher when you think of the absolute drought the N64 had during it's run. The SNES was the last time you saw JRPG's of the quality and quantity on a Nintendo console until probably the Wii and the switch. It was all Saturn and PSX during that time.
@@moonrazk The PSX was the console if you were anywhere outside of Japan. It got all the good stuff. The N64 was entirely about platformers and GoldenEye and party games.

Never even heard of this one before, but man it looks like we missed out big time on it! I have absolutely no time to track it down and play it now, but back in the day this would have been one of my favourite games, I can tell.

Never would have given this game a thought after only seeing the title and thumbnail. The gameplay captures look really good though like it's probably a solid game. Thanks for covering this one
Dang its always so bittersweet to find out about these games that were never US localized, you can always tell how much tlc goes into them- the graphics look so good and the battles are surprisingly unique (for the time) with behind the back (Dragonview?!) style and great animations, these are truly potential gems lost to the sands of time, I always think the translators that make it possible can't be thanked enough and to you for giving these types of games a new audience and awareness @SNESdrunk your doing the lord's work (or dare I say G.O.D.'s job ;P ) Also, speaking of did Maka Maka ever get the english treatment?!!
Nope, neither Maka Maka nor its spiritual sequel, Idea no Hi, were ever translated. And I don't know if it's better this way. Maka Maka was rushed and riddled with bugs, and Idea no Hi, while much more polished and having a pretty good story, had some bad design ideas that would putt many people off. Maybe if those flaws were fixed via romhack, it would be a game deserving of a fantranslation someday, but it would be quite complicated.
Another RPG in a modern day setting was "Idea no Hi" ( Day of Idea). I thought it was pretty good, at some point in the future an English patch may become available.
Yeah, I played Idea no Hi a few years ago with the help of online translators, and its plot is the strongest point in the game. It's also quite similar to G•O•D in which some characters also have psychic powers, and every party member has a dedicated intro, ressembling Live a Live a little. It's a pity that it has some flaws gameplay wise, such as losing HP while you run (to make it more difficult running from visible enemies in dungeons) or the cumbersome clothing system you're forced to use in order to avoid getting damage while you walk through too hot or too cold areas. Maybe a romhack could get rid of it, that would improve the game by a lot.
I’m getting strong Lufia 2 vibes with it. The main character reminds me of maxim and the over the shoulder style battle system is also reminiscent of Lufia 2
Ever since Terranigma I've really tried to seek out rpgs that never got localization. I'd never even heard of this game before this channel. Also those old school (and yes tedious) rpg mechanics still don't bother me, buuuut the "easy mode" improvement patch sounds like the way to go. This channel is awesome. For nostalgic SNES gems it doesn't get better. This game really feels like it was influenced by Quartet creations (illusion of Gaia, Soul Blazer, etc), probably the 2nd best rpg developer for Nintendo. Definitely gotta check this one out. God bless emulation.
Don't beat yourself over it, with well over 100 RPGs it's easy to miss something... especially very late games like this one. Nintendo's/Sony's consoles have always had loads of such games, most being fairly obscure too.
What you said about Earthbound being more than just wacky dialogue and crazy characters, but that it actually tackles some heavy themes shows you understand it better than almost every developer who ever made a game "inspired" by it.
Finally found a way to start playing all these English patches for snes i have watched your channel for so long but now I finally get to play all the games can’t wait to add this to the list thx drunk
3:00 another snes rpg that had a diary is Glory of Herakles IV, which was translated by Transcorp by the end of 2016, I think. One of the members, Plato, was in charge of writing new pages of it as you progressed through the game.
Thank you. I really appreciate your videos. The lists and structures and overall genuiness of your thoughts and opinions of your content helps me a lot when deciding if a game is worth my time or not. I know with technology we can play a lot of these games "any way we can," but not all of us have hundreds of hours we can dedicate to gaming (anymore). I was always so disappointed that I never got a chance to play some of the games that were never translated and I had no idea how to patch files or any of that crap. Now that I know how, I have a LOT of games I always wanted to play but are now in my backlog. Thanks to your videos, I can make more informed decisions about what to play and what to avoid so I can maximize the couple of hours I have free to indulge in my love of Super Nintendo and other classic gaming consoles I grew up with. Have you ever considered doing a "GBA Drunk?" That was another console that had some amazing gems (and some incredible stinkers LOL).
Kids randomly walking into people's houses without knocking. The nerve! At least the kid in Robotrek had the decency to ring the doorbell before walking to somebody's house.
This game is a good one. The story is both quirky and serious. There are some truly light and humorous points, but there are also some extremely dark moments which really tug at the emotions of the player. Drunk is right; you should play this game if you are a fan of JRPGS.
Ive played through it around a year ago, having a soft spot for snes games this really took me back to that era. Its a very charming and a soulfull rpg, comfy would be the right word to use here. Exploring the world and seeing whats happened to it and the people was always something to look forward too. It has a huge world map and a lot of exploration, a bunch of weird sidequests that leaves you confused but is sure to leave a giggle. Story is good, it has its twists and it moments but as I mentioned before charm is the thing here it captures that charm many rpgs seems to fail to do. Combat is great with a lot of areas to uprade and mix it up to your style. Unfortunately some work better than others and it will be a one sided choice. Its a great snes rpg, one of my top 5 on the snes, writing this brought happy memories and it was definietly a satisfying playtrough a must play for rpg and any gaming fans if youre looking for a unique yet familiar experience . The only gripe I have in the version Ive played was a unique sequence in Las Vegas where you have to say yes to everything, if you dont the game wont progress any further , I wish I knew that before because I had start the whole game again from scratch again. And those extra boss fights at the end, it was unique and never seen a other rpg do that.
Great review! There is just something charming about many 16-bit JRPGs. I'm glad the hacking community has been able to give us an opportunity to play many games that were originally Japanese exclusives. I'm definitely checking this one out! It looks like a fun adventure!
Oh man, this sounds amazing. I think the game would test my patience though with all the text-heavy help files. It is nice that the game remembers what you did regardless.
Definitely checking this one out, thanks for making us all discover it! Any other SNES RPGs like these that haven't been ported to the west would be appreciated too, you do a great job of snuffing these out! :D (Can't remember if you did a video about Rudra No Hihou? Could be a nice one!)
When i got bored a few years back i looked through the list of translated snes games i never heard of, ended up finding this. I was shocked i never heard a single thing about it.
Safe to say that the name of the game would have been changed for a US release. "Final Fantasy: The Alien Chronicles," or "The Secret of Aliens," or something.
I've been debating for sometime to add this one to my Super Famicom collection, but I didn't know enough about it to make any informed decision. This really helped give me the proper context about the game without spoiling it I've been curious about. I also have to add, just saying this personally speaking, I appreciate you saying no this isn't Final Fantasy 6 or Chrono Trigger but it doesn't have to be. I love those games, don't get me wrong, but I'm glad not every game is like them. I like variety in my old school rpgs so I can play something depending on my mood. I mean, one of my personal favorite rpgs of all time is Albert Odyssey on Sega Saturn which a lot of people find nearly unplayable. It's a very slow paced game, and it has these very quirky, Looney Tunes humor moments that for some takes them out of the game, but I find gives it it's charm. I find it a relaxing rpg, the kind you'd play on a rainy weekend or something (except for the end dungeon area. F**k that part full stop). If it had to be super serious the whole time, and have time travel, and Operas, and crazy combo attack systems, and was fast paced I'd find it exhausting to be quite frank and honest about it. If I want that, I'll play FF6/Chrono Trigger. If I don't want that, I'll play something else. If I want to play something that's a bit out there, long, but at it's core is a simple old school rpg I'll play something like this. It's nice to have options.
The thumbnail made me think for a second that there was some Golden Boy SNES game I had never heard of. It looks like the artists/author for Golden Boy, Tatsuya Egawa, must have been the artist for this game, and that journal system may have been an influence of his.
I don't know anything else about this game other than what I've heard you say about it. But I will say that the music sound incredible and I'm going to look up the soundtrack right now
Fun fact: this game is quite popular in japan, has a remaster? Remake? On psx, additionally it has a cafe event even to this day, and has some expensive merch and plushies sold at that cafe event
I've been playing this game on and off on my phone for the last couple months, and it's pretty fun. The grinding hasn't really been an issue for me. There were only like 2 times so far that I felt I actually needed to grind to be able to do a dungeon. Haven't finished it yet, but it's been fun
This game does seem pretty neat looking. One of these days i'll own something that can allow me to play games "any way i can". Once that happens this channel will be invaluable for the reminders of what other games and patches to get. 😄👍
@@duffman18 really? I always figured you needed something a bit more powerful to run some of the stuff. Now i'm gonna see what my 2in1 tablet can do, do you know any good sites to get emulators and ROMs from? Kinda excited now😄👍
Just finished the game, it was quite an adventure, and good one ! the patch really helped with the random encouters and to keep the story flow smoothly. The ps1 ( remake ) version looks gorgeous too, and with some differences with the snes. too bad it is not translated though.. maybe one day ! i'll def go back to it.
I hope the PSX rerelease gets translated some day, it's apparently a huge step up from the original SNES version. Also, Gen's victory dance is forever seared into my brain.
That is an interesting looking game, I would have loved it as a kid had it come out over here. I may have to give it a try with the enhancement patch as I have a hard time playing those old grind heavy RPG's these days, there is not enough time in the day anymore lol.
If you want a kusoge RPG to review, there's Maka Maka. It never got localized, it doesn't have a fan translation, it's very buggy due to being a prototype, and it caused the publisher to go out of business. It has homosexual ant men.
Heya snes drunk. Have you ever heard of or played air strike patrol aka desert fighter. It's a game in the same vein of desert strike / jungle strike etc. Only released in japan and eu. Just found out about while looking for games that are similar to the strike series, which unfortunately there doesn't seem to be many.
There's one massive caveat to this game for people who want to play this on original hardware... The game constantly shifts from 240p to 480i whenever text is displayed onscreen. You can actually see the image in this very video shift ever so slightly every time a text box appears. In an emulator, it doesn't matter, but if you play this on an actual SNES on anything other than a CRT, you might not have such a good time. The constant resolution shifting is exactly like Chrono Cross.
The cover art is clearly the guy who created Golden Boy. I figured this would be some sort of harem genre, as that's what he specializes in. But it doesn't seem like it.
Not a bad one. The PS1 remake/remaster is quite similar all things considered, with some small changes here and there. I like how they have loads of stereotypes in this game; mayor of Moscow is the most corrupt human on Earth, and Brits/the French hate each other. :v Overall, fun times, and the serious themes are quite interesting too for sure.
This actually looks excellent. It's like our childhood gets a second chance to play these games.

Yeah, you finally tried it. I believe the creator of G.O.D. was inspired by earthbound aka mother series with a hint of megaten. It's an awesome game.
The thumbnail made me think for a second that there was some Golden Boy SNES game I had never heard of. It looks like the artists/author for Golden Boy, Tatsuya Egawa, must have been the artist for this game, and that journal system may have been an influence of his.
Gotta give it a shot, thanks for the recomendation Drunk!
Gonna try it out, thx for the tip!
looking for that improvement patch you mention, but can't seem to find it anywhere. Link???
This is awesome! A new old-school rpg I know nothing about.
Ohhh man, this game was part of my childhood, I remember playing it on an emulator... The translation patch wasn't done at the time.
I used to play this back in 2018 and I got stuck and don't where to go next and I forgot about this. Thank you for reminding me.
I've made this comment before, but I can't believe that it's 2022 and I'm STILL discovering these lost SNES gems!
If Earthbound, Phantasy Star 2, and Chrono Trigger got put into a blender, you'd get this
A game to use the fast forward button on. Got it.
Been subscribed for a while and I love your stuff man. Do Shounen Ninja Sasuke next!
SNES Drunk is a quality TH-cam channel about retro video games!
Looks pretty good actually.
snesdrunk rn, thnx for the review
The reason why it wasn't localized is in the title... "You visit the Vatican of all places!" :3
Currently playing thru and really digging Earthbound (first time) maybe this should be my next game. Great review
This game does seem pretty neat looking. One of these days i'll own something that can allow me to play games "any way i can". Once that happens this channel will be invaluable for the reminders of what other games and patches to get.
😄👍
If you have a phone, a tablet, or any kind of computer, then you already own something that allows you to play it any way you can
@@duffman18 really? I always figured you needed something a bit more powerful to run some of the stuff. Now i'm gonna see what my 2in1 tablet can do, do you know any good sites to get emulators and ROMs from?
Kinda excited now😄👍
Just finished the game, it was quite an adventure, and good one !
the patch really helped with the random encouters and to keep the story flow smoothly.
The ps1 ( remake ) version looks gorgeous too, and with some differences with the snes. too bad it is not translated though.. maybe one day ! i'll def go back to it.
Liked that game mate, the ending boss shocked me a bit though, solid enough to me👍
Thank you for discovering another hidden gem!
This looks great. Gonna have to check it out.
I've played this one. It gets real dark real fast.
It's rare for me to find something I missed on super famicom. I'll definitely have to pick this one up "Any way I can."
Nice, thanks buddy!
You always find the most interesting games
well the cover looks like the creator from golden boy, is that same artist?
I hope the PSX rerelease gets translated some day, it's apparently a huge step up from the original SNES version.
Also, Gen's victory dance is forever seared into my brain.
Flawless Fawlty Towers reference 👌
That thumbnail art was absolutely done by Tatsuya Egawa. I'd recognize those women anywhere.
This game is fantastic.
I forgort how tanked I was yesterday! Good Review g!
That is an interesting looking game, I would have loved it as a kid had it come out over here. I may have to give it a try with the enhancement patch as I have a hard time playing those old grind heavy RPG's these days, there is not enough time in the day anymore lol.
I actually played this this year. I enjoyed it. It was clunky, but enjoyable. was hungry for more Earthbound-like rpgs
What did you use for video capture? It didn't look as clean as your usual SNES capture.
Illustration matches the Manga Golden Boy!
I appreciate the Basil Fawlty reference thank you!
If you want a kusoge RPG to review, there's Maka Maka. It never got localized, it doesn't have a fan translation, it's very buggy due to being a prototype, and it caused the publisher to go out of business. It has homosexual ant men.
Seems like the character designer for this game was by Tatsuya Egawa known for his Golden Boy manga.
I thought I was feeding my dog a Cheetos Puff, but it turned out it was this game. Not going to miss it.
I hope YOU have a great rest of your day
The game review goat has blessed us again, thank you snes drunk could you look at the lemmings series ?
The cover art is clearly the guy who created Golden Boy. I figured this would be some sort of harem genre, as that's what he specializes in. But it doesn't seem like it.
Definitely will be playing this soon
Not a bad one. The PS1 remake/remaster is quite similar all things considered, with some small changes here and there. I like how they have loads of stereotypes in this game; mayor of Moscow is the most corrupt human on Earth, and Brits/the French hate each other. :v Overall, fun times, and the serious themes are quite interesting too for sure.
